  • Halloween Horror Nights is an annual special event that occurs at Universal Studios theme parks in Florida, California, Singapore, and Japan. The Halloween-themed event occurs during the fall season and features haunted houses, scare zones, and live entertainment. In this video, we look at the event’s beginnings as Fright Nights in 1991, its growth and change to Halloween Horror Nights during the 1990s, the introduction of icons and changing homes to Islands of Adventure in the early 2000s, the event’s sweet sixteen and focus on intellectual properties during the late 2000s, the event’s 20th and 25th anniversary in 2010 and 2016, and this year’s event.

      Exactly. I remember attending V. $145+ was the least you could pay to go this year with an express pass (which is mandatory if you want to comfortably experience the whole thing). And that price was only available for a handful of the dates. It's gotten so expensive. An express pass on a Thursday night did not used to be over $130. That's just stupid.

      Pro tip: Do Stay and Scream, they let you in an hour early and you don't even need a Fast Pass. Then make sure you get the Half Night Fast Pass. It starts at 11PM (in 2017 it started at 10PM) when the event is at it's busiest and you pay only half the price of the full Fast Pass. I went to all 10 houses in 2018, spent an hour in Diagon Alley and got out an hour before the event ended.

    UO Front Entrance employee here. If you're wondering why tickets are like $120/night when it was $12 thirty years ago, it's because of the houses they keep adding. The $12 ticket adjusted for inflation is $25, *BUT*, there were only like two houses in those days. The biggest reason for the price hikes is not only the number of houses (each house staffs between 25-75 team members/scare actors at any given time), but for licenses.
    In the video, you see that for most of HHN's history, there have been original houses/stories. *BUT*, we live in the "IP-era" of theme parks. So, having a Stranger Things house (rights owned by Netflix) is expensive because it's popular. Want a Gremlins or Beetlejuice house (rights owned by Warner Bros.)? Again, expensive license. To keep merchandise at the same price (basically all T-shirts being like $28 or whatever) Universal takes a hit because of royalties paid. But Universal brings things like Stranger Things or GhostBusters, neither of which are Universal properties, but are things that guests demand, so Universal brings them in. Since merch is one of two ways theme parks make money (the other being food/alcohol), they have to raise ticket prices to cover overhead.
    *TL;DR: Universal raises ticket prices so much because bringing in IP based properties Uni. doesn't own costs more money, so the ticket prices raise to cover the overhead. Theme parks DON'T make money from ticket sales. It all comes from merch and food/alcohol.*

    I went in either 91 or 92 and it was terrifying. I was 9 years old, and the characters were allowed to physically grab you at the time! Like grab you by the waist when your back was to them. As a little girl with a wild imagination and shrill scream... Every single line I waited in I got a 'scare' from a cast member. It was really frightening as a kid, but looking back, it was a super fun Halloween celebration, and I'll definitely never forget it.

  • @TheTrueMac
    @TheTrueMac 11 месяцев назад +16

    As a 90's kid from So Cal, I can attest to the fact that this was awesome to experience growing up. It got lamer over the years and people also changed. Everyone trying to act hard all the time, not letting themselves get scared or trying to act tough, sometimes even assaulting or disrespecting employees they're there to experience. Like anything else, people ruined it over time.

      It seems like the event itself was terrible, it was competing against a much more established event with Knott's Scary Farm. • @ThemeParkHistory
    @ThemeParkHistory  5 лет назад +514

    Hey everyone! Just as a heads up: just because we've made a video on Halloween Horror Nights doesn't mean we're done with the event just yet. We have future plans to cover the other parks (Hollywood/Japan/Singapore), specific storylines of haunted houses over the years, Bill and Ted's Excellent Halloween Adventure and more!
    We wanted to go into more detail with this video but doing so would have made the runtime closer to an hour and most likely wouldn't have been out till November, obviously missing the point of Halloween. We apologize if the video is a bit lackluster at points but with so much history it was hard deciding what to include and what not to. We also didn't want to use that much POV footage inside the houses due to the copyright strike we received for Universal's House of Horrors, we weren't willing to test our luck for a second time and jeopardize the future of the channel.

      I haven't been to HHN since they had Bloody Mary but I have been watching coverage of the haunts and scare zones here on RUclips and it seems like there are three main problems. Overreliance on existing IPs, lower quality makeup/effects and an increase in actors seemingly phoning it in. Now, the first one isn't too big of an issue because Universal owns these properties and thus they can use them as they see fit. But when you have The Walking Dead and AHS for four plus years in a row it gets a bit old. Secondly the makeup and effects thing is also an issue. Now, as someone who also works at a Halloween attraction I know that sometimes the mask you're wearing comes loose or makeup starts to smudge as you sweat but if you're working for a multimillion dollar attraction then the mask you're wearing shouldn't look like something you fished out of the bargain bin at Spirit Halloween. I was watching a video from HHN 2014 I believe and this one girl was wearing a mask that looked like someone took a Xenomorph mask, painted it flesh tone and glued a wig to it. Also in that same video there was this scare zone revolving around post apocalyptic cannibals and you could tell that they were wearing some kind of headpiece to make them look bald save for a top knot. Lastly and most damning of all is actors that phone it in. Now, this is understandable in some cases; hell even I'm guilty of it. But it should only be done towards the end of the night and as a last resort. I've lost track of the times I've seen actors walk up to patrons and just growl/scream and walk away. The worst offender of this however was in an AHS house I saw coverage of a couple years back. In one scene themed after the Hotel season this blonde girl walked up to the patrons, went "bleh" and walked away; and if that's not bad enough as she was walking away she threw her hand over her shoulder as if to say "I don't care, go away." *Sigh* rant over, I'm passionate about scare acting and to see these kind of things time and time again is just disappointing.

    • @ThomasKyleVideos
      @ThomasKyleVideos 5 лет назад +21

      Crow the mad i totally agree. It just seems like the passion is gone. I worked at a haunted house and I remember getting so excited and trying different skits to scare people. I really wanna continue to love this event but it just seems like such a cash grab.

    • @MysteriumArcanum
      @MysteriumArcanum 5 лет назад +14

      @@ThomasKyleVideos Yeah, it's a shame really because I had quite a bit of fun when I went. I'm similar to you in that whenever haunting season starts I go all out and I try to get a feel for the room I get put in to see what kind of props are available to me and how many dark corners and crevices I can hide in. I've been doing this for seven years and I honestly feel I'll be doing it until I'm old and gray. If you're ever in south Florida around October look up Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds. Not to brag or anything but in the past we've had people who work at HHN come though and say we're better; both because we tend to divide lines into manageable groups and we give it our all even minutes before closing time.

    Awesome video. I went to HHN every year through 2006 (Sweet 16). I still have a shirt from each year in a box. There was another big change that happened with HHN after 9/11 that you didn't mention. Starting that year in 2001, the actors were no longer allowed to touch you. Before that, they would jump out and grab you and chase you down the street with a chainsaw.
    Another thing they had was when they started having them themed around a character, the night would start with a story and you had to try and guess where the main character would appear next and if you got it right the main character would be there then they'd give you a clue where they would appear next and you could spend the night trying to 'solve' the story.
    One cool thing they used to do was use existing rides in a new way. For example, at one of the early HHNs they converted the King Kong ride so instead of like normal when you'd be up in the air riding in the cable car, you were instead down on the ground in a burned out city. The haunted houses were also awesome, like the alien research facility, asylum, decent into Hell, and the haunted ship.
    They also used to serve a drink at HHN called The Lobotomy which was five different types of rum and pineapple juice. I still make them myself.
    I'd love to go back one more time!

    Universal missed an opportunity there when they didn't name the Caretaker Dr. Rigor Mortis.

    Do you think you can do a Halloween horror nights video that is more focused on the Hollywood event?

      We have plans on covering the Hollywood event in a separate video, we didn't go into more detail due to time constraints.

      @@sammylane21 yes and no. Yes they are at the same time but no it's not always same thing. From what I understand they do it differently so it makes people want to visit both parks.

      No, in my day, we did not. USH set up was entirely different than Florida. USH actually had Haunted Houses in their parking garages. We did share information and I did use their creative for the Psycho Path, one of our houses from the early days in Florida
