The Theme Park History of Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (Islands of Adventure/USJ/USH)

- Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey is a motion based dark ride attraction that opened at Universal’s Islands of Adventure on June 18th, 2010, Universal Studios Japan on July 15th, 2014, and Universal Studios Hollywood on April 7th, 2016. In this episode we explore the rise in the popularity of the Harry Potter books and films, Universal and Disney attempting to bring the franchise to their parks in the early 2000's, Universal finally securing the theme park rights in 2007, the construction of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and it's flagship attraction at Islands of Adventure, the ride and it's success, and the eventual construction of the same areas at both Universal Studios Japan and Universal Studios Hollywood.

I remember going through the Dementors scene, and one of the animatronics touched the bottom of my shoe and I tell ya, that scared the daylights out of me lol. Great video as always TPH!
The same thing happened to me when I was younger!!! I thought I was the only one who experienced that.
Gummi Goomi my foot knocked into one of the giant bones right before you see them and I thought I died haha! Glad to know I’m not the only one who’s had my foot run into something accidentally!

Same! And with the animatronic right in my face I was scarred for life I’d always close my eyes from the part of the pitch to when they get back
The first time I went on it I balled my eyes out at that scene, ahhhh good times

The immersion on this ride is insane. I remember it being so realistic that it's literally scary at certain points.
The dementors get extremely close and look crazy huge . I literally understood why Harry was so horrified of them . When I watched the movie I’m like that ain’t even scary but in person is a different type of thing 😂
The spider scene 🫢🫢🫢 let’s say I didn’t expect them to add it and boy did I jump in my scene yelling what the fuck…. My friends still bring it up joking about it to this day.
I've never screamed so loud on a ride like I did being face to face with that dementor.

As a huge Harry Potter fan I just couldn't believe how insanely detailed the Wizarding World in Orlando is. I visited before Diagon Alley was built and it was amazing, then after Diagon Alley was built... walking through the entrance... it was like a religious experience, it's really hard not to get tears in your eyes. And now with the addition of Hagrid's, the Wizarding World in Orlando is just absolutely incredible. If you're a Potter fan, or hell, even if you aren't, it's an absolute MUST!
when this ride stalled out and I got to look around I was amazed at just how complicated the ride was. The giant arms moving the way they do is absolutely incredible. this ride is way better without 3d btw

That was my favorite ride out of both parks. Really really loved the atphomsphere not only on the outside but also the line
Forbidden Journey is a much better ride, Gringotts should’ve been more like the Mummy, an actual coaster. But as is, it has one decent drop and waaaaAAAaaaAAAYYyyy too many screens that break constantly. The queue is incredible though, but so is Forbidden Journey’s.
Been rewatching these during quarantine. Man, one of my best memories was being able to attend on opening day, waiting in line since before the park opened, surrounded by fellow HP nerds. One of the best theme park experiences I've ever had.
I’m a Disney girl through and through, and I wasn’t ever especially interested in Harry Potter, but I’d seen the movies. BUT when I went on this ride, I was BLOWN AWAY. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is incredible and the way the ride works is amazing.
As much as I love this ride and especially just walking through the castle, I can't ride it anymore it makes me feel nauseous AF. Definitely one of the best themed lines and rides ever made. Great video

Yeah, it made a lot of people feel like that. Did you also try riding it after they got rid of the 3D glasses? It was supposed to help some people but don't know if it made much of a difference.

I rode the one in Florida a few years ago and the one in California just a few days ago and both times I got really sick after. It’s a great ride but wow does it make me nauseous

Good for JK having the theme park done her way, down to a T. It’s just been growing the last 9 years, including the new Hagrid ride. My wife and I visited the Osaka Universal, so that was our first Wizarding World experience!

Visited Universal Hollywood for the first time this week, I was completely blown away by the Wizarding World. As a huge potter head, Everything including the ride was one of the greatest things I’ve ever experienced.
Probably my favorite theme park ride ever.
The entire attraction was beautifully realized. Thank goodness Ms. Rowling has scruples and protects her characters, creations, and the world of Harry Potter. Now, if George R.R. Martin was offered a Game of Thrones theme park, he would simply take the money and run, no questions asked.
I feel like a whole episode of TPH could be done just on the history of how a Wizarding World came to be- I found the parts about how both Disney and Universal came to JK Rowling and how she wanted to retain creative control and disliked the weak theming of Disney's plan to be the most interesting part of the whole thing. Her iron-fisted control over the park is why it's as good as it is. I think if Disney were allowed to take HP and run with it, we'd get unscary dementors and a serious lack of Death Eaters, and butterbeer-flavored Dole Whip (ok, that might not be a bad thing).

As someone who knows NOTHING about Harry Potter, I have to really admire the amount of detail and theming this ride has, it looks incredible!! I’m sure fans of the franchise must be in heaven.
I was part of the Harry Potter convention that happened there that opening year. They opened the park for us after hours and it was great. Only problem was that they hadn't expected that so many adults would want to go on the Forbidden Journey ride. The seat tester at the gate did not fit anyone tall or large or, in my case, women who were rather well endowed. The head harness wouldn't lock down far enough. This was in June of that year. Apparently by September they'd changed the seats to be more accommodating.
Probably still too early for Hagrids motorbike but Gringotts for sure!!

14:32 That part of the ride scared the daylights out of me. I screamed so loud, and was clinging to my fiance's hand for dear life. I'm a huge arachnophobic, and did NOT see that coming. The ride was undoubtedly amazing, but I was not a fan of having a giant spider in my face. Then again, I could've been stuck in front of it when the ride broke down briefly, but I luckily wasn't. XD

I wish I could have enjoyed this ride when I went. I NEVER get motion sickness from rides. But I had to close my eyes about halfway through this one. When it was over, I had to sit down for about an hour afterward before I felt okay again. I’ve never had anything like that happen before or since from a ride.

I remember watching Disney Channel and hearing about that train. The Disney lady with the mic got to see the train up close.
I don't know my feelings about JK Rowling anymore but thank god she was insistent on the Wizarding world being immersive. It just wouldn't be the same if there were just a couple harry potter themed rides.
No matter your feelings on her, she ushered in a new era of incredibly immersive theme park lands, changing theme park history forever.
I agree, I’m glad she didn’t sign it over to Disney because then we wouldn’t have what we have now. Universal was a better deal and I’m glad they let her have creative freedom as they should have.

There is no question of it, this theme park is something I wish to see and just experience everything! I love the Harry Potter series and I even did a project once long ago in school explaining the various parks in Orlando FL and at the time, This was being made and I included it. My brother got lost on the ride(The workers fault not his) and I know almost everything about Island of Adventures, new rides, bts of the rides, when Celebs will be at the park etc. and we got free wands and fast passes to Hagrid's ride. the reason they did all of this for us is because they did not want my family to sue them lmao

Absolutely right, but someone who doesn't know about the industry would never know what to look up if they heard "eye-app-uh" and wanted to know more. "I-A-A-P-A" sounds really weird to ears that have been around the themed entertainment industry, but it's more helpful for casual viewers.
Went to the Hollywood Hogwarts a month before it’s grand opening for a soft opening. It is the same as the Florida one but it was basically empty because no one knew it was open to go into
