Same here. The magic of the Disney parks seems to be fading: Price gouging, overcrowding, new attractions being built on the cheap or underperforming and an end to guest experiences that so many people enjoyed just because they weren't making Disney enough money.
It's amazing how much of this ride depended on the cast members--I can't believe ride operators had to memorize a 60-page script and then deliver it with high-quality acting....on top of keeping track of the ride vehicle, timing, and scene changes! I really hope they got paid well because they certainly deserved it.
I was on the opening crew of this ride. We worked for months with the ride before it opened. The script went through MANY changes, right up to opening day. And some scenes changed entirely. For instance, Mickey's FANTASIA scene was originally a tornado for the WIZARD OF OZ segment. But Disney could not get the segment short enough to satisfy copyright permissions. The scene, however, could only go so fast, and eventually the tornado (which never really worked as intended) had to be cut entirely. I was on set the day Cagney's wife and daughters came by to approve his scene. And ALIENS originally had strobe effects and was darker, but got tamed a bit after a test rider was triggered with an epileptic seizure. A shame, as that scene was originally quite intense. And for those curious, I only ever saw the FOOTLIGHT PARADE scene working as intended maybe once or twice. But the rotating tiers and (especially) bubbles effect was great when it did.

The main thing that annoys me about Great Movie Ride's closure is that Hollywood Studios needs a ride like this. Anytime you go to Hollywood Studios now, 5-6 rides have an hour or longer wait (and there are only 9 rides in the park!). The park is busy pretty much all day, every day. The Great Movie Ride can hold a lot of guests and because it's a longer attraction, it keeps people off other lines for a longer period of time. I understand it was in need of an update (in all honesty, Disney owns so much IP now they could have revamped the attraction to only feature their movies) and I fully believe that it needed one. However, Hollywood Studios is a small park and cannot currently comfortably accommodate the amount of guests that come everyday. The park needs more rides, not more ride replacements. I'm also not thrilled that my nearly half hour, air-conditioned break has been replaced with a ride that lasts 5 minutes tops.
This will forever be my favorite ride, it hurts every day that it closed, I don’t think I’ll ever get over it 😢 sometimes I forget it’s gone but then I remember. Disney really really messed up with this one 💔

Not gonna lie with the changes made to mgm and universal I really really miss the whole behind the scenes stuff that made them special. The tours the boneyards the idea you were so close to blockbusters. Plus I never ever got my damn photo of the alien :(
I was lucky enough to see Mary’s carousel horse in person here at this ride when I was a little girl. That was when I realized I could actually see, in person, things I’d only previously seen in film. That epiphany sent me into a life with the desire to see as many of those things in person as possible. Unfortunately, neither my family’s or my own wallets seem to be able to accommodate that dream as much as I’d like. :(
The history of this attraction is amazing. I will forever love the Eisner/Wells era of the Disney Parks and I would do anything to ride this one more time! The story of Audrey Hepburn's hand prints only being at the Disney Chinese Theatre is incredible.
Fun Fact: the hijacking scenes are known as scene A and scene B. Scene A (gangster scene) would always be featured in the ride day-to-day, but scene B (western scene) only operated on busier days when park capacity was higher. This allowed GMR to move larger crowds through the attraction quicker so as to make the queue line not feel longer. You could tell that both scenes were running, as well as tell which scene you'd be seeing, based on if there were two ride vehicles and which one you were sat in. The first vehicle would roll through the gangster scene with no interruption or show sequence, not stopping until the western. So the scenes were happening simultaneously for the guests. If you wanted to see the western scene but were going to be placed into the second vehicle, you were allowed to ask cast members if you could go for Scene B. They would ask you to stand off to the side while they loaded the current vehicles. Typically this would mean you getting a front row seat and sitting next to the vehicle operator / being close to the Host and then to Mugsy / Bank Robber respectively. It was a really cool experience!
Close but flipped. Western was the A show and Gangster was the B show. The letter names came from the designations of the guide wires in the floor. There are four radio wires. A takes the western show and parks on the left in the finale theater. B is the gangster show and takes the right side spot in finale. C leads vehicles into the storage track of the maintenance bay. D leads into the repair area of the maintence bay.
I don’t think I’ll ever get over this ride being closed. I loved it so much, especially the part in the Egyptian tomb with the guy “dying”, the effect was so cool! And not to mention the Wicked Witch animatronic was just mesmerizing to watch! I’m glad me and my mom were able to ride it on our last visit to Disney, so I was at least able to say goodbye without knowing it. 😭
My favorite ride of the park. It’s sad that it’s gone now and replaced with a new attraction. Even though I’m glad Mickey Mouse finally has his own attraction after so many years. I personally think the money they put in the new ride to fully refurbish and update The Great Movie Ride to feature other genres and newer movies. That way it’ll stay relevant and the updated AAs will keep it going. But, much like Universal, Disney is now banking on trends than nostalgia. Though, you’d should’ve mentioned more on the grand finale movie montage. That montage has made at least five changes before the TCM version. Other movies were added in some of the parts along the years. The montage was the best part of it. Wish there’s a way to watch them all.

so interesting little crossover story, I worked at tgmr in the early oughts and the cast would routinely go to universal city walk's city jazz club (now the karaoke club) for their swing dancing nights, a lot of us even dressed in period clothing (fedoras, zoot suits, flapper dresses and hats). so at least for a few months there was a legit chance to run into the gangster who hijacked your tour group at Disney while they were having drinks and dancing at universal 😂
Yes, nice after a while! 😀👍🏽 I think I've been on this ride back in 2002 (back when Disney's Hollywood Studios was then known at the time as Disney-MGM Studios).
this was my favorite ride in all of Disney up to it's death in 2017. I am convinced this ride had a Subconscious effect on why I decided acting was the path I needed to go in.
This ride was so much fun. I miss it. I'm fortunate that I was able to ride it a few times before its closing. Side note: You used the theme for "The Movies" game. I loved that game and got hit with a wave of nostalgia when the theme played. Thank you for that.
Glad I got to experience Disney World/Disneyland and Universal Studios in California Florida before everything was changed in the last 15 years… all the old school classic attractions are gone.

I missed your videos!!!!! So glad you are back! Here’s your crown king 👑
Also can you please do Muppet Vision 3D?
Love the use of the La La Land track at the end😊
Man, a classic when it opened, still miss it so much.
I saw this ride back in 2012 and I loved all the movie details and pieces. It was great.
I last rode The Great Movie Ride in May 2017 and I'm so glad I did. One of my all time favorites! Thanks for making this video!
Once again, he's back!
"Forcing Imagineers to create a ride that I only can assume was just as magical and iconic...GOOD GOD!! MOVING RIGHT ALONG!!! DON'T LOOK AT IT!!! IT CAN'T HURT YOU IF YOU'RE NOT LOOKING AT IT!!"
😂😂😂😂 I LOVE IT!!!
Love the addition of the LA Noire theme song!
The LA Noir music stirs so many emotions in me.
The Great Movie Ride was the only thing I saw in Hollywood Studios on a break neck multipark ticket day. I’m so thankful I got to see it in person.
Always a joy to hear about The Lottery, starring Bette Midler
Nice choice of DKC music for the Tarzan scene 😉
My all-time favorite ride. I miss it dearly
I’m just glad I was able to ride this attraction back in the late 90’s. Too bad I don’t remember much about the trip. Too young and too long ago.
Just as I got off of Runaway Railway! This was is for sure the superior version for sure
Heck yeah! Been waiting for the next episode. Love these so much!
We Need a History Video on Disney Quest!
Another Great Classic 👍🏻 Thank You so much. Please do “Body Wars” from Epcot/Wonders of Life Pavilion next, as I never had a Chance to experience it. Unfortunately
i don't live in the us and only know about the disney parks by consuming content on youtube but this was one of my favorite Disney rides ever. Too bad I don't have a chance of ever getting to see it in real life anymore..
Do the maelstrom ride!!!! Love your videos thanks for all the great memories!!
I had wanted to be a performer for the Great Movie Ride, but it closed before I even applied to the college program. I miss when Hollywood Studios was about filmmaking.
Thank you for this. It’s a true shame that such a fun, educational attraction is no longer around. I wish they would’ve kept it and changed it to ‘The Disney Movie Ride” or something and just dedicated it to Disney’s solid list of films.
Oh well. Sad, but glad I got to experience it a lot over the years. Great video.
Always a great day when TPH uploads!!
I miss this ride so much. Its an interesting precursor to rise of the resistance. ( and i haven't ridden mickey and minnie's runnaway railway yet. I wish it had been possible for this to not be replaced.
It was always my favorite and I rode it every single visit. I had looked forward to sharing it with my kids and husband. 😭
A ghostbuster scene would have been amazing.
I loved this ride when I went to Disney World around the time they were going to change the name of Disney MGM Studios to Hollywood Studios. This was my absolute favorite ride of all of Disney World. I really wish we could have kept it. It is such a classic for me.
I remember requesting this like 4-5 years ago and you finally came around and did it! Thank you so much lol
Please make sure you make a video about the history of The Hunchback of Notre Dame: A Musical Adventure at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World in Florida.
THANK YOU JACK!!!!
Babe wake up, Theme Park History just uploaded
I really miss your videos man. Hope you come back to us 🥺
Still can't believe it's gone, feels so weird to see it on this channel already
I loved riding this from the year it opened til we stopped going, and it's one that I feel like watching the ride footage for takes me right back to it. Some of the movies I knew, others my mom would tell me about. A great ride for the whole family and a great walk in attraction as well./
Oh this will be a good one!
The king has returned.
Love the show....Good to see you again
I miss this ride. All the set recreations were fantastic, especially the Nostromo.
so interesting little crossover story, I worked at tgmr in the early oughts and the cast would routinely go to universal city walk's city jazz club (now the karaoke club) for their swing dancing nights, a lot of us even dressed in period clothing (fedoras, zoot suits, flapper dresses and hats). so at least for a few months there was a legit chance to run into the gangster who hijacked your tour group at Disney while they were having drinks and dancing at universal 😂
I've Didn't Know L Frank Baum's The Wizard Of Oz Meets Disney's Mary Poppins. Thanks Theme Park History Mate. X
GMR Let’s gooooo and welcome back!
We miss you, hope you’re doing okay!
I remember finding this ride completely by accident when I was allowed to wander alone for a bit while I was 14, instantly became my favourite ride
Ah, Jack! I see you're a man of Yesterworld culture as well.
By the way, if your next episode is really Superstar Limo, I will scream XD
I love that you used the menu music from the game The Movies. One of my favorite games! 😭
Awesome! When I visited as a child I really loved the Alien portion of this ride (saw the movie after the ride).
This ride was so much fun. I miss it. I'm fortunate that I was able to ride it a few times before its closing.
Side note: You used the theme for "The Movies" game. I loved that game and got hit with a wave of nostalgia when the theme played. Thank you for that.
I was lucky enough to visit this park shortly after it opened in 1989. Great memories!
Glad I got to experience Disney World/Disneyland and Universal Studios in California Florida before everything was changed in the last 15 years… all the old school classic attractions are gone.
