The Theme Park History of The Haunted Mansion (Disneyland/Magic Kingdom/Tokyo Disneyland)

- The Haunted Mansion is a dark ride that opened at Disneyland on August 9th, 1969, at Magic Kingdom on October 1st, 1971, and at Tokyo Disneyland on April 15th, 1983. Taking a gloomy Doom Buggy for an eerie tour through a haunted estate full of 999 happy haunts, the attraction is considered by many fans to be one of the most outstanding theme park rides ever created due to its atmosphere, story, score, audio-animatronics, and special effects.

Grim Grinning Ghosts from this ride is still a yearly banger for Halloween season

Absolutely
It's sad Disney doesn't still employ talent like this. Disney relies so much on IP's today, it just feels like a cold corporate showcase instead of the mesmerizing and unique rides they once thought up. I doubt many people today could come up with some of these timeless attractions like Haunted Mansion, Horizons, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Carousel of Progress
I remeber when Disney refurbished the californian Hollywood Tower of Terror into a generic Guardians of the Galaxy ride, like wtf 💀💀
Wasn't tower of terror twilight zone ip?
Yea, it was
Welcome to life in the 21st century.
I reckon there are still talented imagineers working at Disney. I bet some of them are frustrated as well.
I hope Jack is brave enough to review an even scarier attraction, "Superstar Limo."
ha ha that attraction scarier than it is stupid.
now that gives me nightmares
When I was six years old, I rode the Disneyworld haunted mansion. It began a fascination with ghosts, cryptids, and the paranormal in general that lasts to this day. Nine years later, at fifteen, I conducted my first paranormal investigation, and forty years later, I still chase ghosts whenever I get the chance. I've seen quite a lot of things in that time, and I won't stop until I'm a ghost myself.
It's looks like talking about galya peeva she was 6 or 10 year old girl galya peeva she feels like almost top of her own life story ture life movie made in USA today TV series finale season start show hollywood story life look back at movie ever seen in movie theater in new ride Disney world and Disneyland before New year would have been there since flash back past life look back at
I can't remember how old I was but when I was a kid my uncle used to watch tales from the crypt and I'd always watch the intro. And when I first went to Disneyland we probably did the haunted mansion like 20 times just because it reminded me of the tales from the crypt lol

I miss you, Jack.
I'll never forget going on this ride with some friends as a kid. Once we were seated in our Doom Buggy, one of my friends instantly grabbed the safety bar and forced it down. Then the "Ghost Host" says "Do not pull down on the safety bar, please! I will lower it for you!" My friend then panicked and forced it back up. Then it wouldn't come back down, so he grabbed it but it was stuck. A ride host dressed as a butler then came along, pushed the bar down, and completely in character drones *DON'T DO THAT AGAIN* sounding like Lurch from The Addams Family! Great memories!
Its been a while. I hoped that your channel didn't permanently become one happy haunt. Glad to have you back!
Hey happy Halloween day to Disney 100th birthday party anniversary celebration party years ago New happy haunts
It's looks convenient for context for conjuring movie same place looks Joey King she was Chrisne parrey she was hosting Halloween costume haunted concert in California with conjuring movie part in
I still believe Walt's greatest mistake was not allowing the outside to be themed like a real haunted house.
I feel, like the Haunted mansion is errie with it's unrealistic perfection!

I always made time for the Haunted Mansion when I went to Disney World. It's not scary to me, but I love the atmosphere. Never did see the Jack Skellington version.
That’s Jack Skellington, not Jack Skeleton.
Really?
@@stephenkostiak3929 Thanks for the correction.
Does anyone know how I can find the full version of what was in the beginning of the video (the two kids and tree things) or what that vhs was called?
They did make plans for it. After the huge success of the overlay over in Disneyland, they decided on planning for the overlay for the Disney World version. But unfortunately it never happened at all, because fans of the ride weren't too happy that they were going to close it down while they were going to decorate for the holiday overlay for Halloween and Christmas. Because they already made the overlay décor for it, they decided to ship it over seas to Tokyo Disneyland and use it there...
The Haunted Mansion has been my favorite ride since my first Disneyland trip at 5 years old. It made me laugh to learn that my husband did not feel the same about it on his first trip at the age of 9. 😂
This is my favorite ride (despite being terrified of it as a kid xD), it has the most interesting storyline of all the attractions (Guillermo del Toro was going to be involved in the 2023 movie and I know he and only he would have made the story justice, now I just hope this film is going to be at least a fun watch).
ANYHOW IT'S GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK THIS IS ONE OF MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE CHANNELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do hope you cover Phantom Manor, because that one's story is so good, I love how it's connected to the land
OH SO GOOD.
Does anyone know how I can find the full version of what was in the beginning of the video (the two kids and tree things) or what that vhs was called?
I hated this one as a kid. I love it now though
@poopee5102 I don't know if anyone has answered this but search "Sing along songs, Disneyland Fun". Have fun!
I'm very interested by the advertisement's explanation that "Walt was worried that the ghosts from the old houses torn down for the freeways would disappear if they didn't have a place to haunt." Like, such a weird backstory the buildings theming.
I had the VHS tape that first clip was part of when I was a kid. I believe it was made to advertise the parks. The Haunted Mansion section was my favorite part and I'd watch it on repeat. Totally forgot about it until seeing that clip wow.
Please....how I can find the full version of what you are talking about. I had the same vhs and I also watched it countless times and that haunted mansion part was also my favorite. I must watch it again. I know I can more than likely find it on RUclips just don't remember of what this one was called ( the two kids exploring the park )
@@poopee5102 Disney Sing Along Songs Disneyland Fun in HD! (title on youtube uploaded 4 years ago)
So cool. I never noticed so many of the details because there is so much to look at! There is history for Madame Leota too. She was an imagineer. I can't recall her full history but it was interesting connecting the graveyard and trying to replace the head
Leota Toombs was an Imagineer who worked on rides such as Country Bear Jamboree and Splash Mountain. She provided the face for Leota while Eleanor Audley was the voice. However, Ms. Toombs did provide her own face and vocals for Little Leota, the figure at the end of the ride who tells us to "bring our death certificates"
My aunt was an employee hired as an artist at WDW decades ago who's main job was to draw caricatures..
They took those numerous artists around the park to help add to the addition of the expanding work 4
Welcome foolish mortals to Theme Park History! The channel with everything to do with theme parks! Love this Jack. Waiting on the Buzz Lightyear rides and Midway Mania.
Midway Mania would be really cool
@@epicindustries1939 i love those rides

Alright!
Does anyone know how I can find the full version of what was in the beginning of the video (the two kids and tree things) or what that vhs was called?
We need him back :(
Great video! I had a great-great-grandmother named Leota and a lot of people in her town believed she was a witch, so the fact that the Haunted Mansion has a Madam Leota is always amusing to me.
Where’d you go man I miss these
I always go back to Harper Goff's original sketch.
And I've honestly felt that the storyline really works. You have the creepy atmospheric chilling beginning and then once all the ghosts are summoned you have the big ol crazy party
It's great to hear a video from you because I'm guessing you put a lot of time and effort into these videos. Making sure that we have all the facts. And I know how hard it probably is to try and make these videos when it's hard to talk about rides that haven't already been talked about
Does anyone know how I can find the full version of what was in the beginning of the video (the two kids and tree things) or what that vhs was called? Maybe a RUclips link...
Yesssss I’ve been waiting years for that theme park history video even my comment is shown, it’s one of my favorite rides ever at Disneyland, good timing before the new film adaptation
As someone who grew up with the Eddie Murphy film before becoming a fan of the ride and of the Disney parks, I still really enjoy it and it makes me sad that more fans of the ride do not. It's such a prolific film in my life and it's one of the ones I can turn to for comfort. Like-- it's good and y'all are just mad because it doesn't follow the ride to a T.
Thank you! These are my thoughts on the film too. It was one of my favorite movies to watch growing up and it was also what introduced me to the haunted mansion ride as well. It’ll always have a place in my heart.

I’m gonna say it: the haunted mansion movie was pretty good. The set design and special effects were great (the mausoleum scene is a highlight.) I think that if Eddie Murphy had toned down how silly his performance was, it would have been a much better movie (if he was more serious, and less over-the-top, it would enhance the scary elements and make the silly bits contrast better.)
Honestly, give it another shot and you might like it more than you expect!
Oh man that opening was mega nostalgia lol! Those dancing trees creeped me out so much as a kid 😂

“Nopeing the hell out of the attic,…” is the best thing I’ve heard today.

Yeah, March 23.LOVED that Museum of the Weird (I still believe the floating candles are his idea!)
I kinda consider myself an expert on Disney’s Haunted Mansion but you’ve included some photos and footage I haven’t seen before. Thanks!
Welcome back and amazing video on the Haunted Mansion. It's too bad that Disney never got to see this iconic attraction come to fruition, but here's to hoping it continues on its legacy.
As for the next Theme Park History video, I'd like to see one of the Tokyo DisneySea version of Tower of Terror since, unless the ones from the other parks, that has nothing to do with the Twilight Zone TV series.
yeah. the japanese people have never heard of The Twilight zone tv show before so they have to make a completely new and original storyline.
Glad to see you back! One of the best content creators on this platform

The intro was so nostalgic omg. I used to watch that tape almost everyday of my life as a child 😭
Oh MAN, DID I EVER need THIS TODAY!! You helped make a Terrible day a Little bit better! Thanks so much!
I've watched many videos about the Haunted Mansion and every time, I learn something new. This is a nice dive into the development of this attraction. It's my all-time favorite at the parks. I've been on the Disneyland and Magic Kingdom versions, and I hope one day to ride all the others!
Those high prices are making Walt turn in his ghostly grave!!
I love how this never gets old, no matter how many times you hear how it became.👍
15:12 this make sense, because the 5 freeway is right next to Disneyland. You can't hear during operating hours...our unless your on the train and keep an ear out for it (which Disney did very well covering up). 👏👏👏👏
Wait, the Hatbox Ghost is going to be in my state's Haunted Mansion? How ghoulishly delightful.
THE THEME PARK LEGEND IS BACK
0:22 jfc that vhs was such a staple of my childhood, you just unlocked a CORE memory
He's back! Let's goooo
I LOST it a "noping the hell out of the attic!" GREAT video!
Okay, I heard the tune of Luigi's Mansion playing in this. My day has been made. Thank you, Theme Park History
Oh God that intro of the kids staring at the haunted mansion. It makes me feel old😂i remember watching it on vhs almost daily and I would always cover my eyes since I found that segment scary.
When I went to Hong Kong, I made a point to ride Mystic Manor as many times as possible, around 8 times when I went there :) it really was a worthy tribute to the Haunted Mansion without the ghostly theme. There are many easter eggs and homages to the Haunted Mansion in the ride but it truly does stand out as one of the best Disney rides, sadly far less better known than the Haunted Mansions and Phantom Manor.
Oh no, did this channel die? It's been 11 months since we got an upload
anyone know if he is done done, i went to look him up on x and he's not on there anymore, his content is the best
Could you cover Pirates of the Caribbean?! I love that ride about much as the movies!! Makes me want to say that it is a pirate's life for me!!!🏴☠️🏴☠️
He's - he's alive! 😮 The prodigal son has returned!
This was 1 of those rides that terrified me as a kid, but quickly became 1 of my favorites as an adult. I hope this ride never changes.
w wa q
It's barely ever changed since opening. All that they did was update some effects and bring in a different bride.
The mention of old homes being destroyed to build highways (a terrible act of government they named Urban Renewal) in a video by Disney was eye opening to me. I know that was just part of a script, but it’s a terrible part of our country’s history. Related, I’ve always thought Main Street was included as a shady response to urban renewal.
That opening takes me back to my childhood, watching the disney sing along vhs with that haunted mansion bit.
Does anyone know how I can find the full version of what was in the beginning of the video (the two kids and tree things) or what that vhs was called? Maybe a RUclips link...
Lol, for some reason, I had looked over the channel today, seeing when the last video was and behold, 2 hours later after that, the legend returns with another amazing video! Welcome HOME!
Hi man, i hope that everything is alright.
I just want to say THANK YOU
Respect for how long he takes to put these videos out.
FINALLY A HISTORY VIDEO ON HAUNTED MANSION!
I remember as a young lad in 1969 I listened to the LP record with Ronny Howard as the scared teenager thinking this was just another Halloween record, I never realized this was Disneyland theme park!
Could you do an episode on the Pirates of the Caribbean? I think it'd be interesting because of how it was Walt Disney's last attraction and how much the ride changed over time because of the movies
So happy you're back! Omg that sing-along is a staple of my childhood
I love the little jokes and/or comments made during this video! "Noping the hell out of the attic" and the thing about the passes both made me chuckle, LOL
Also, I liked the Eddie Murphy "Haunted Mansion" movie
Welcome Back! And also covering one of the undisputed greatest rides ever made. Awesome!
The legend! This is my fave channel. Thanks so much for your work on these videos.
He’s back. The GradeAUnderA of theme parks is back.
When I was 5 years old I was an extra in a Disney movie called Happy Hauntings. The movie was filmed at The Haunted Mansion.
So the attraction was closed for several weeks while filming took place.
That is awesome!
You're a back!!! Welcome Back! :)

Great to have you back. I was having a bad day and then I saw your new video pop up and it changed my whole day so thank you
just another great video!! thank you for it! ...part of me was hoping you'd go through all the changes in the attic through the years and the subtle changes to the storyline as it evolved, but i also know that would be an INSANE amount of work lol well done as always :)
I wonder how he is doing I hope he is ok
One thing I think is pretty neat is that The Haunted Mansion opened the same year Scooby-Doo first premiered

Bravo man bravo. You've made my weekend! Welcome back
It’s great to have you back! I’ve always loved your videos and so happy to see another one uploaded!
I recall the terrible monorail death as well. To their credit Disney World tries very hard to keep everyone safe at great expense. Each of their characters have one or more dedicated staff watching over them and they appear to go the extra mile to prevent any accidents. They also make a huge effort to ensure people who have food allergies are safe as well. Not just the common shellfish and peanut allergies but any type of food allergy. As money gets tight in the next few months they may be tempted to cut corners. Lets hope not.
My bad lowkey forgot about this! Day 5 of commenting until jack comes back 😂
99% sure bros gone for good
I’m so happy you are back!
Welcome back man! So awesome to see you again!
So wonderful, I've seen a bunch of videos on this ride before but found a bunch of new things. Well done. Glad you're back
I’ll always remember one particular night at the Haunted Mansion. Adorned with a ‘Happy Birthday’ button, I stood alone in front of the eerily lit Mansion, devoid of any other living soul ... or so I thought. As I gazed at the spooky facade, a mansion Butler emerged, his stare menacing. Still in character, he pointed at my birthday button and droned, ‘Happy Birthday.’ I didn't plan on experiencing the Haunted Mansion that night, but this unexpected interaction changed my mind.
