the ride only moving at 1 mile per hour is one of the funniest things i've ever heard and it genuinely sounds like it could be a gag in a sitcom or something
21:24 the muted audio as the lifeless puppet of Wags slowly descending from the shadows until the silence is broken by yet another Toot Toot Chugga Chugga Big Red Car is pure gold
As an Aussie and born in 1994, I grew up in the peak Wiggles era. They did an 18+ (aus drinking age) tour in Syd a few years back and toured all the local RSLs. Tickets sold out in 30 secs. Literally a bunch of grown adults a bit drunk singing ‘toot toot chugga chugga big red car’ at the top of our lungs. Iconic.
There was a Wiggles cover band that did this in London, I think. They would play sets at bars and do pub crawls, all while singing songs from both the Wiggles and The Smiths. I believe they were called The Giggles? (I'm an American who saw it on the Internet like 10+ years ago)
I mean, after reading dozens of E-mails of people graphically describing their sexual encounters mere feet away from Garfield the cat I think nothing can shake you.
As an American who had the yellow or purple wiggle dude as a sort of rag doll but also came with a voice box, i wish I still had it to see what it’s value is.
I'm going to start a wiki just so that next time someone starts talking to me about Lovecraft or Dark Souls lore I can go on a 38 minute rant about Wiggles lore and link them to it
I had just presumed the wiggles were just a bunch of random actors that were hired for a childrens tv show. Mad respect that these guys started this because they wanted too and not because they were forced to for a paycheck.
I'm just imagining the opposite version where Greg Page wound up dying at some point during the Emma/Lachy/Simon tenure, but the videos were still using Greg.
Kevin's overuse of _Toot toot, chugga chugga, Big Red Car_ is always funny. It gives us a little peek into the maddening lives of the park attendants who have to sit outside and listen to it every three minutes, day after day after day. You could not pitch me a more convincing Hell.
That song is the Australian equivalent to the It's a Small World song. How many people have been driven to madness by it? How many have killed because of it, because I am 100% sure it is a non-zero amount.
@@thesalvager3020 I mean, unless if you were mentally ill and see it as an evil way to torture your victims, then yeah, it would be hell for those who have mentally sane brains. For me, seeing how this can be torture, well, no different from what I've seen with the SAW franchise, and horror movies that repeat the same line as if you're being brainwashed and indoctrinated by the franchise's theme song itself.
Let me say as someone who has worked with Greg (original yellow wiggle) who speaks openly about his recent heart attack, I can say that that The Wiggles are genuinely some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. They have only ever wanted to create content and educate children with their needs in mind. They genuinely care .
Because if there’s any song to associate with the slow decline of the attraction or even a decent horror experience, it’s that old song “Toot Toot Chugga Chugga Big Red Car”.
The wiggles origin story is actually surprisingly sweet, dudes just wanted to make some good kids content. I'd always heard about the wiggles band members leaving in passing and assumed that they'd gotten laid off for being too old or something, but the fact that they performed for kids for so many years and eventually had to leave because of health issues is something I did not expect, good for them.
Jeff (purple og wiggle) has the best origin story. The others were childhood teaching students and for their final assignment did children's songs. They needed more band members and I think it was Anthony and Jeff were in a band prior. They called Jeff up and asked if he fancied a short gig, and Jeff replied sure how long do you need me for ... and that was something like 15 years he did it for.
Man, even in recent footage of Anthony with all the new wiggles members, you can just see in his eyes how much fun he’s having, how much he enjoys what he does. I’m glad at least one of them has been able to stay on to instill the band’s original energy to the next generation of cast members.
@@bagofgroceriesI'm very curious what percent of the company each of the OG Wiggles have control of, and then the new members, and like Anthony's daughter for example.
The original wiggles lineup still tours occasionally, hilariously doing mostly 18+ pub shows for adults who grew up with the wiggles. Murray is also still very present in the Australian music scene, and does a lot of TV and radio and even occasionally pops up at music festivals to play guitar with popular rock and punk bands. They actually topped a countdown a few years ago that one of our very popular major radio station does where listeners vote for the best song of the year for covering a Tame Impala song. It cannot be understated how massive the wiggles were and still are in Australia, they’re basically royalty, and I think a big part of that is the fact that they all just seem to be really nice people who love music and care about kids. I think it’s that passion and sincerity that’s always kept them so beloved, in the same way we loved Steve Irwin. I’m not a patriotic person, but I’ll be patriotic about the wiggles god damnit.
@@WAMMO678 excellent comment!!!! I stopped watching many years ago when my kids "aged out", but now I'm enjoying going back and watching every video I can find.
I really appreciate how much Kevin is risking demonetization for using that "Big Red Car" song so much just to drive home how funny it is that the ride just bluntly clobbers you over the head with it at every opportunity.
I'm not sure if Kevin's motivation was "I must accurately convey the experience of this ride" as he goes back to his research notes or "you will ache as I have ached" as his lower eyelid twitches
hearing the phrase “wiggles lore” over and over and realising every single time that I do in fact know the wiggles lore was kind of a humbling experience
Learned more about the Wiggles than I care to admit. I mean, I know of the group and the show. Yet, well, when they came around. I was a teen and actively tried to avoid such childish stuff as if it were a plague. In hindsight, thank God I did. @.@ I have the Caillou song burned into my brain. Alongside PJ Masks theme. And does Baby Shark count? No? Fair enough. And this is as an "old" ass adult, lol. Then, again, I did watch a lot of Blue's Clues, but that show was fire back in the day.
For some reason I got really cracked up when he said ""The attraction received no big send off, no final rides, not even a true goodbye. Which is a shame, because the Wiggles have four different songs about saying goodbye."
"Nothing makes a man face his own mortality like being a Wiggle" is the kind of unusual and powerful sentence that keeps me coming back to Defunctland for all these years.
The line "This level of Wiggling was simply not sustainable, but Wiggle Mania was showing no signs of stopping." Delivered in the serious documentarian voice really just exemplifies why this channel is so good
Just imagine how creepy it would be to explore an abandoned Big Red Car ride and you go to the kitchen and all the drawers and cabinets and doors start opening and closing by themselves.
As someone who grew up watching The Wiggles in the 2000’s, hearing they once had a dark ride is both surprising and on brand for The Wiggles at that time.
I don't know how it would be "on brand" but okay. It is a children's show I know, but what are you getting at? Is there a darker side to The Wiggles than what is on the surface? Could this be something worth investigating like say a channel called, Blameitonjorge, or say Night Mind even? That'd be interesting and I would watch it too. I saw the Wiggles in the same era, I remember when they replaced some of the crew, I stopped watching it after that and also, I was well passed moving on then as I was a bit older anyways. I remember the songs but only one comes to mind every time I think back, Fruit Salad, Yummy Yummy. That was also a backmasking era as well, "Stairway to Heaven", "Fruit Salad" and many many more like "Another one Bites the Dust" and Ozzy's "Iron Man." I was but a wee lad back then I am a fully grown adult now exploring the AOL internet at the time what a waste of time that was, Dial up. Jeeze was it utter trash. I know I say "lad" and Bri'ish terms at times THAT is just to keep things vague and ambiguous. Remember anyone can be anyone on the internet or over the phone like in the movie, "Boiler Room."
I like how midway through the ride explanation you just stopped mentioning that they start playing "Big Red Car" but play 2 seconds of it. It really adds comedic value to the whole thing, despite this probably being super annoying to have "Big Red Car" play everytime you trasition to another room.
Everyone laughed at me for taking my two year old to see the wiggles concert 16 years ago, saying he’d never remember it. Well I still do as one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. High energy, fun and as a stay at home mom back then, I knew every song.😂❤
I respect the fact they were open about replacing a member, and why it was he was leaving. They could have just replaced him but they treat their child audience with enough respect to be honest with them. Children are not idiots. They notice things.
Fun fact: a couple years later when Emma (the third yellow wiggle and the first girl wiggle) had to sit out on of their tours due to her endometriosis they played this video at the beginning of every show letting the kids know she wasn’t going to be there cause she wasn’t feeling well and she even when on the news to talk about her endometriosis and spread awareness about it. The wiggle are just really fucking great.
Probably more for the parents than the kids. The Wiggles were _big_ in Aus. My Mum even reported that there were multiple times when I was a kid that she'd find herself accidentally still listening to the Wiggle's cassette tape after she'd already dropped me off at daycare. And she wasn't the only one! If there'd been no comment, the parents would have been at a loss, particularly as to what to say to their kids when their favourite band changed members!
@@Respectable_Username as an Australian who used to watch the wiggles as a little itty baby I'm still listening to fruit salad while I'm in my last year of highschool!
I love the tone of the video. You openly drag how terrible the ride was, while successfully illustrating how it was still endearing and beloved by the fans. Its very apparent how much you enjoy these outliers of culture, relics that have their time and then go away. There are a lot of great rides, a ton of rides that are OK, but only a few can be truly, spectacularly, memorably bad, and this is what you love to highlight. Seeing your passion makes the videos enjoyable for us as well.
i just couldn't believe that they would decide to light a permanent attraction like that with festoon light strings, like it was the old school maze of mirrors tent at the show
From the gentleman that brought you the midlife crisis of a Disney CEO, the sandwich of the future, a bear talking about stranger danger, and a powerful rat named Charles Entertainment Cheese.
the tone of this piece is absolutely singular. there are plenty of niche documentaries, and plenty of mockumentaries, but this concept of being devotedly factual while also hitting humor beats that are so dry they're nearly entirely implied by the editing is something completely its own. Defunctland is inventing a new genre and i cannot get enough.
My favorite defunctland series is the Jim Henson mini documentaries. They are so well put together and just so good. I couldn’t get enough when I watched them last year. I cried so much at the end😭
Kevin lamenting the glacial pace of Big Red Car before immediately cutting to Formula Rossa going 150 miles an hour had me in stitches. The man is a comedic genius.
To be fair if you're moving 1 mph on a coaster that's probably bad. If you're going a buck fifty at any point during a dark ride that's definitely bad.
I completely lost it at the dark ride section. The constant stressing that the ride is slow, with a perfectly cut edit of the same song everytime the car moves to the next crappy section, and the deadpan narration. It's perfect!
Believe it or not most people from the Goldie use Gods suggestion as their main form of decision making. Our Mayor even has a tax payer funded religious advisor 😂.
I’m a 30 year old American and I can honestly say that I had no idea The Wiggles were THIS popular. Hell, the first time I actually sat down and watched The Wiggles on television was when I was babysitting my nieces and nephews when I was in college. They all seem like genuine dudes who just wanted to entertain kids for a living. Very admirable.
Oh good gracious. At the height of Wigglemania, their concerts were respectable-budget affairs even by the standards of adult rock concerts. They had a supporting cast of a couple dozen backup dancers, acrobats, and aerialists ... Murray was rigged to wires that lifted him up into the air during "Play Your Guitar With Murray", others flew during "Eagle Rock", and they had an entire aerial rig that supported at least 4, maybe more, acrobats above the stage. They've played Madison Square Garden and sold it out. It was a great time to be a Wiggles fan, because it was just crazy that a kids' musical group was that successful. When I moved to Australia, I got to learn that they're kind of embedded in the national consciousness because they've been around for like TWO generations of kids now, and most people think they're cool. When they had the big line-up change after the 3 originals retired, the new crew played small venues like a local shopping mall, a tiny pavilion at the state fair, and a city Apple Store to get used to performing. Their cover of a pop song actually was the number 1 voted song of the "Top 100" one year recently.
@@randomcommenterfromdownund8949 The best thing is that the original Wiggles are still performing and packing out arenas and festivals for audiences that grew up with them.
Yeah, I was never really into them as a kid, but I used to love Bananas in Pajamas and I had a plushie of one of them that would play their theme song when you squeezed his hand.
yeah mate they're huge. im a 24 year old Aussie. went to two shows of theirs as a tiny child according to my mum, and last year went their adult only og wiggle tour. it was for people that would have been children when they first started.
I appreciate how all of us seem to appreciate The Wiggles in this video. They were great fun for all ages, and they've even done adult only tours. I remember them fondly, because even my Mom would sit down to watch the wiggles with my brother when he was a child.
Did anyone else gain a new respect for The Wiggles through this video? They were extremely productive for their entire career and their origin sounds very respectable
As someone who missed their popularity boom in the US, this video made me go look up their history, and I have a lot of respect for them now. They seem like a very wholesome, talented, hardworking, passionate group. Not just the founders either, but all of the newer members too.
@@carly7522 I thought by the end of this video the original Wiggles had all gone, which would be understandable. This video didn't really go over all the new Wiggles and I'm not too familiar with them. Considering that they're still going strong I'm sure the new ones are just as hardworking and passionate about teaching kids as the old ones.
As an Australian it's fascinating hearing you explain The Wiggles in such a methodical and external perspective. It's great. It makes sense. I've just never had someone explain The Wiggles back to me before in such a matter of fact way because everyone here just automatically knows about them from birth before they even learn to recognise their own parents.
Hey, some of us Yanks also grew up with them (like me). However, not everyone knows their story, and I had forgotten some of the side characters and big hits until seeing this video. I wonder if Australians are reminded of them more often as they get older.
I’m from California, growing up in the late 90s early 2000s and to this day still get full wiggles songs stuck in my head randomly. Specifically the swimming at the pool one “na na, na na na na na na, nANANANANA NA NA”. I remember seeing them perform at universal studios in hollywood, and getting my vhs signed by Murray who i had a huge crush on as a child lmao
"why she lookin at me like that" caught me so extremely off guard. I've been watching this show for five years and that's just....... not a tone of voice I would typically associate with Mr. Perjurer. Incredible, 10/10.
@@shen-qf9mc Been watching too much analog horror, thought for a moment it was going to start looking at me when this came up, also i laughed at the tone of voice.
Even in reading this ahead of time I was absolutely *not* prepared for that sound to come out of his mouth. Damn near spit out my tea all over my computer
Something that’s so heartwarming to me about the Wiggles is that these guys just loved doing it. When they were past the point where they could retire (being damn near 60+) and be comfortable off The Wiggles money for the rest of their lives, they kept making music and gushing about how this was, is, and will always be a project from the heart. It’s great, and a huge reason I think they did so well.
Absolutely deceased when the quote "Somebody's got to do something about this" from John Langhurst came on the screen. Even my Australian husband agrees; quintessential Aussie attitude.
Mad shoutout to the Wiggles for regearing from a 90's post-punk band and then becoming like the most renowned children's music band of the 2000's. Hell of a turnaround.
I feel like it's a surprisingly common theme for punk bands! The Aquabats are the people who made Yo Gabba Gabba, which had bands including JImmy Eat World and My Chemical Romance as guests. They Might Be Giants doesn't *really* count as punk but they only just separated their spotify profiles so you don't have them on shuffle going from the FLOOD album to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse themesong LOL
Though it does feel a touch ironic that a band that followed in the steps of Midnight Oil, a band who had a song about the destruction of SE Queensland heritage in a song titled "Dreamworld", went on to have a ride there.
For as much as I've always been impressed by Kevin's consistent focus on objectivity and serious tone as a documentarian, I for one am LIVING these subtle comedic beats he's been throwing in lately. _stares back into Flora Door's soul_
I would say hes been doing it for longer than people realize lol. Everytime I rewatch the Nick Hotel video I giggle the whole time. I think it’s definitely coming out more in newer videos like this and the Garfield ones, though.
God I'm gonna have that "Toot Toot Chugga Chugga Big Red Car" line stuck in my head for a week just from watching the video. I can't imagine what it was like for parents having their children drag them on the ride over and over lol
It was daily, cold, dark, routine, morning hell before driving them 25 miles in -5 F and snow to their pre-school each morning. They are now both finishing college and I still have a love/hate relationship with, ‘The Wiggles.’
I wonder how my father felt when I decided to loop Fruit Salad Yummy Yummy a lot as a kid XDD (Im from the US and surprisingly despite being a kid when the New England Wiggles World was put in, never went there lol)
I like how kevin sounds more and more disappointed as he describes the ride. Its so funny. When he shows wags sliding down and completely cuts all the audio to show how slow hes really going, henry not moving his arms when he is told to and the saxophone playing fish moves back and forth, which kevin gives his approval by saying in a monotone voice that it is “great”, to returning to the loading area extremely slowly. I love how informative he is and how funny he is at the same time. Also that zoom on flora door looking very unsettling at the beginning was great. Keep it up kevin! Edit: lol i kept calling him patrick. My brain kept turning on and off. I didnt know i did that until i saw the replies lmao
Have any trackless ride every thought of making it a high speed car chase so the tire tracks make sense, like you the rider are the chaser and you must chase a sometimes seen chasie
@@nickrustyson8124 At the start they were probably a bit too slow for that, nowadays that's probably a bit more feasible with better positioning and less chance of surprise bumper cars.
Got kicked out of a wiggles concert for crowd killing, told those kids if they couldn’t handle some slam dancing while fruit salad was playing they need to get out the pit still a 10/10 concert Wiggles for life
I owned a day care for 17 years. The Wiggles were a big part of my play time for my kiddos. We sang and danced and laughed. My kids loved it. Yes, I also danced. Good exercise. One day one of my kids looked at me as we were dancing and he informed me I don’t dance as good as Greg Wiggle. Funny kids. ❤❤
I went on this ride during a school trip. Mid way through the ride stopped and the lights turned off while we were in front of henry and for the next 30 minutes it was just henry making mechanical clicking sounds swaying back and forth until we decided to walk out of the ride as the attendants went on their lunch break. 10/10
ngl that sounds like some Five Nights at Freddy's creepypasta. Or whatever that newer thing is, the one with the tall blue guy. Fuzzy Wuzzy or something? IDK I haven't played any of these games.
@@PenguinLord10 I think it’s called poppy playtime but I really relate to the tone of this comment, honestly I am surprised I even remembered what it was called
This ride (and especially the lightning issues) just shows how weirdly close together is the boundary between whimsical kid fun and an ominous look into an unlit abyss
35:08 life lesson: if a park cannot be trusted to even upkeep simple lights in a dark ride, you cannot trust them to keep you safe in more potentially dangerous rides
Well, it was the timing of the lights that was the problem, not the maintenance of the lights themselves. Still, the accident would have been prevented with better maintenance of the ride and/or investment into a system to automatically monitor the ride and shut it down if the water level dropped too much.
Shoot, I forgot about that! What year did the accident happen again? Edit: Whoops, didn't realise it was mentioned in the video. I could have sworn it was 3rd quarter of 2016 as I remember seeing a big ride closed during that time, but I could be confusing Dreamworld with Seaworld.
Ok this aside, no disrespect to the victims, this is truly an awful tragedy but only 1 fatal accident in multiple decades is like... really good numbers compared to like, almost everything in the world. It reminds me of how we are so terrified of sharks who only kill 5 humans per year on the planet, meanwhile humans kill hundreds of thousands of humans.
Well I work at a huge themepark. And lights is not something they care about. They rather focus on keeping the big rides up to date. And if the small ones work okeyish and are safe they see that as enough. Lights, broken speakers, needing a repaint, small disfunctions on the show elements are not something they care about.
As a little kid who went on this ride over 50 times, I never seemed to notice how run down this ride was. It was still a magic experience to ride and was always the highlight of the day.
Kevin Perjurer might be the only person who could make me care about a dark ride for children based on a band I don't listen to in a country where I've never been. Hats off.
21:53 "In response, Henry rocks from side to side. Not technically moving his arms at all, but the saxophone fish does move back and forth, which is great" probably one of my favorite lines

Can you explain to me how this video is in any way an abnormal upload for the channel? Isn't literally every Defunctland video about obscure, somewhat bizarre, theme park history? How is this video any different?
Jokes are supposed to have some basis in reality such as to critique or satirize it. This joke does neither. The punchline is just silly lyrics in a silly font. Maybe you could call it a absurdist humor as it juxtaposes the idea of a "normal episode" with silly children's song lyrics. I assert that this kind of humor is already par for the course for Defunctland making this indeed already a normal episode and the joke baseless.
The juxtaposition between the dry delivery and names of the Wiggles' songs is exquisite, and left me in hysterics. As someone who grew up with this group, this had me smiling the whole way. Thank you, Mr. Perjurer, this is another banger.
The bassline in "big red car" takes legitimate skill to play and only a genuinely talented person could've written it. It's more sonically complex than a significant number of basslines written in the last 10 years.
the complete silence at 21:24 killed me, like how underwhelming the sliding sequence is coupled with the fact a ride themed after a very musical show felt the need to make it completely silent here has me DYING
Honestly, as an Aussie who grew up on The Wiggles, that explanation of their origin was *incredibly* interesting, and really made me appreciate them that much more lmao. Feels weird to recognise that this massive part of my childhood was, in fact, a passion project by four average dudes. Admittedly the same could be said about Dreamworld. I actually didn't even know it was founded in Australia!
Yeah, the original Dreamworld founder story is surprisingly wholesome. The fact that it was successful by the time he sold it and paid off for him is nice to hear.
I didn't know they were Australian, but knew they were really popular here in the US when my friends first started having kids about twenty years ago. I also didn't really know what their act was like (I thought it was just high-energy goofy crap), but it looks like a fun and positive show, and it was impressive to find out their motivation was about being educational.
@@jamescarter3196I'm from the US and grew up in part on The Wiggles. A lot of it was high-energy, but the music was actually really well-composed, and quite the ear worm. Yeah, it was kids stuff, but it felt like they didn't use that as an excuse to make the songs sound kiddy. Honestly fitting since they originated from a proper band. I was 6-7 when my sister was going through her Barney phase, and it drove me nuts. It all felt really generic and kiddy. The Wiggles was a lot more tolerable, as the harmony, instrumentation, and melodies made for great music in general, even if the lyrics were kiddy. Or maybe I'm just a bass/organ fanatic that could listen to Fruit Salad far longer than most healthy adults.
Can we just take a moment to sincerely appreciate Kevin's understated comedic edge? He's said that he likes to leave any more direct criticism in podcasts and out of the main documentary, but you can still feel what he was thinking from subtle hints that just make the sass even more effective. Like, "I'm just going to let this cursed footage speak for itself."
As an Aussie under 25, you have just unlocked so many core memories with this video. The degree of reflexive passion with which I screamed 'WAKE UP JEFF' surprised me, terrified my cat and probably woke up everyone in my house to boot 💀
I love how Kevin both dogs on these poorly made dark rides and also memorializes them. We can all agree that this ride is pretty below average (if we're being generous) to the point where it's funny/fascinating. But at the same time, it has to have been a memorable experience for at least a few kids out there and that is worth remembering. These sorts of Defunctland videos capture this duality so well.
It's like the opposite approach to a lot of nostalgia based media we see these days. Instead of sugar coating it and trying to see it through rose-tinted glasses, or turning it into low effort creepy-pasta, we get to see that, yeah half the stuff that entertained us as kids was weird and janky but to us it was magic ahaha
The intentional placement of the “chugga chugga big red” lyric throughout this piece is pure art. The LAYERS Kevin puts in these videos are just epic. ❤
I watched this with my mum and she recounted to me how when I was 5 we did this ride 30+ times in a row. She described the experience as truly painful. My favourite part was apparently wags :’)))
24:15 has to be one of my favorite "background gags" in the past year of videos. Just smoothly transitioning into an explanation of how trackless dark rides work and the unique hurdles they run into, the whole time silently zooming in on the most excited dad ever to grace a theme park promo picture.
I’ve heard of people being struck with an idea so amazing they had to make it a reality, but I’ve never heard of someone seeing someone’s else’s idea and, with the same passion, saying “I have GOT to rip that off”
I mean someone in another country being like: WOAH why can't we get something like this? Makes some amount of sense. Also that's fairly similar to how Alton Tower's Nemasis coaster basically came from the Batman ride being huge inspiration for exactly what Alton needed with the hight limits. Stuff like that basically happens. In this case though it was funny that his inspiration was: zoos smell bad and then I was served by someone who was really itchy.
The most impressive thing about the Wiggles, they went some 30 or so years without a major scandal other than the replacement of band members. Seriously there is something wrong with most the people who get into Children's Entertainment. So many child shows turn out to be deeply dirty.
@@18haylo More of a bump in the road then a game changer. Watching it back, it was probably the softest divorce someone could've gone through. Very remarkable and respectable for both of them.
real i remember being like 5 and going to a wiggles show and being super pissed that it was some random guy and not greg bc the American episodes still featured greg
ngl as an american who never heard of the wiggles before, I was waiting for the ball to drop that one of them turned out to be a pedophile. Idk if it reflects poorly on me or society. I just...dunno. Fuck, man. Why's it gotta be like that? I'm gonna go lay down and cry.
My Fiancé has POTS (the illness that Greg Page suffers from) and we both grew up watching the wiggles and never knew this! It can be such a debilitating illness and one that is invisible, so awareness is huge and seeing what Page has done for the dysautonomia community is really amazing. Thanks for talking about it in this video, and I hope the folks watching can learn that even though someone with POTS looks perfectly normal, they are always fighting very hard to stay up and wiggling…
We were thrilled as a family to find out Greg had these issues ... kidlets were huge wiggle-ites and son at age five developed fainting fits when he stood up. And they lasted till he was 14 or so .. several times a day at their peak, so to have this idol like figure be open about it genuinely made it less scary for son and more normal and manageable. As a grown adult woman the love felt for the wiggles as a parent of young fans is huge. Cannot actually think of any other "celeb" that have more gratitude for what they've put into the ethos ... except maybe Bowie ... but hey its Bowie.
I have had type 1 diabetes for 40 years. You'd never know it. In fact, when I tell people of all my complications, they downplay it. They just can't believe that I have so much to go through, yet look so normal, even more healthy than many guys my age (48). Well, that's because I try. I hear you, the invisible illnesses are hard to convey to people.
I also have orthostatic hypotension and hearing about Paige struggling with it gives me some odd sense of solidarity even though I am too old to have ever been a 'wiggles' fan. They did often babysit my young sister when we were growing up and always seemed like very nice and talented dudes.
Not content to simply pay homage to all the best parts of Disneyworld, evidently Australia also decided they needed their own version of Superstar Limo. Mad respect to the Wiggles, however. All this lore was new to me as a person that had long aged out of their target demo by the time they made it big in America, and it's always heartwarming to see people that genuinely believe in and are passionate about children's entertainment be rewarded with success.
The fact that that planned addition to the park filling all of that closed down space is an homage to the original creator's vision honestly hit me right in the heart. There was a lot of gain and loss in this park's history, and a lot of change, it seems, so the fact that things came full circle despite ownership being so detached is incredibly wholesome.
Just want to add for all the awesomeness of the wiggles ... have seen them live three times. (With kids although prob would happily go alone for chuckles), they ALWAYS came into the audience during their set, top and bottom circles, and didn't care if kids ran up to them and said hi and hugged them. Same when on stage. Dozens of kids would run up to the stage with a rose for Dorothy or a foil covered cardboard bone for Wags and they always interacted and said thank you. Every single kid felt seen and special. They were earning millions and still never forgot the innocence of their audience.
As a kid, my sister brought a big red bow to give the Chuck E Cheese mascot, and they turned the gift away! We were so bummed. The Wiggles characters must have created such special memories for these kids bringing them presents. Giving roses to Dorthy sounds so cute.☺
Its actually kinda nice that the Wiggles got 2 new attractions jn a new area, instead of just being phased out totally. Usually these stories end with everything being gone and forgotten.
Some of his early videos were only like 15 minutes long. He did 10k Leagues Under the Sea as a two parter because it would be 25 minutes. It was a big deal when he did a whole park in 30 minutes. Now he's spending 40 minutes on a single ride and calling it a "minisode"
I'd never heard of turtlenecks being called 'skivvies' before; I've always heard the word used to refer to underwear (e.g. "strip down to your skivvies"). So at first I was REALLY confused about this children's performance group that was performing almost nude.
In australia it was pretty normal to wear a thin turtleneck under your clothes, especially for kids in the 70's and 80's, so that's probably why the word migrated to all turtlenecks
I was a kid when Greg resigned from The Wiggles and I remember thinking how weird it would be for him to be gone. My mom had told me about it and I was like a “But he’s one of The Wiggles, they can’t just replace him” Always love these videos, I’m big into theme park history so it’s always very interesting. I’d completely forgotten about the water ride incident, now that is a grizzly story…
The seriousness of tone with which you talk about children's media never ceases to make me laugh while also knowing you sincerely appreciate the work that has gone into it. Thank you
As someone who was a kid during wigglemania who fully bought into the hype, I can't imagine I'd notice if the wiggles got replaced with park employees. as long as they had the right shirt color I would accept anyone as the True Wiggles
Right? Like I knew the host of TV shows and the characters for bigger franchises like say, Disney Channel, I would've noticed. The question is, would I care? Honestly I don't think so but it's hard to say bc in my country when I grew up the host were very consistent. One show added a young woman but that's it, the other adults just did this for ten years or more lol. I remember going to musicals or a small open air theatre near us and just assuming the actors were idk, the little mermaid or whatever or that there were just multiple of them (btw that makes the discussion about Disney's casting choices even funnier bc kids give a sh*t about looks. It's grown adults who complain about Fantasy characters. Ah, to be a child again...). (I can't make a direct comparison bc I grew up without any knowledge of the wiggles)
My youngest daughter is a blippi fan, and I had to point out that some episodes//live performances are just some random dude pretending to be blippi. Kids just see the costume and that's enough. Mall Santas anyone?
I think my favourite Wiggles fact is that whenever they posed with children, they created their signature finger gun wiggling so that they never had to physically touch children to avoid any backlash.
Not just avoiding physical contact but also so their hands were always completely visible in pictures so no one could accuse them of secretly touching outside of frame.
I honestly find it sad that anyone who is remotely famous basically has to avoid hugging or putting their arms around fans, all because so many people have either been wrongly accused of assault or have actually assaulted someone. It sucks to have that fear, both for the celeb and their fans.
My fav Wiggles story is how they were boarding a plane and the airline had printed Jeff's last name as Fart and not Fatt. When they were called up for boarding the agent read out their names "Mr Cook, Mr Page, Mr Field, Mr... Jeff." and Jeff was all "Mr what? Mr what?" and the agent couldn't say it. He apparently has the boarding pass framed in his house.
I know I wouldn't want to spend all day touching random germy children whose boundaries I'm not familiar with lol. Feels weird to frame this action as a means to "avoid backlash" when there are a host of good reasons not to put your hands on strangers that don't amount to "I need to cover my ass"
For those of you who don’t know, the bgm at the credits that starts at 38:00 is called “Sour Grapes” by Alexandra Woodward, and the one at the closing logo at 38:43 is called “A Certain Kind of Girl” by Mike Franklyn. I hope this helps all!
I'm not surprised this was your follow-up. After having gone down such a deep rabbit hole to get one single name, it must have been relaxing to be able to open up the creative writing instead of the investigative work... to just give yourself a little bit of Wiggle room.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the, if you'll pardon my phrasing, gigachad energy of John Longhurst? Dude wanted his own theme park, he did the bulldozing his own damn self, and then he shamelessly and fearlessly ripped off Disney as much as he possibly could, arguably also improving much of it with the Australian stuff. I'm sure there's a milkshake duck twist to this guy somewhere cuz there's gotta be, but right now I'm just in sheer awe at this absolute unit.
Dude must have been insanely rich too, either that or really good at making connections. Kevin made it sound like he was just some dude, but there must be more to the story of how he came by the means to do this.
yeah I'm surprised Disney didn't try to get his ass over the copying but maybe the Disney of the past wasn't powerful enough or didn't care enough. I'm sure the Disney of today wouldn't let someone do that.
I grew up going to this park a lot. This ride was, to a kid, one of the most relaxing rides. We would love all the little mistakes, like watching Wags the dog going back up the slide as you moved into the next room. The lines were always insane, and in the Queensland heat it became horrific but it was worth it for us kids.
"This level of wiggling was simply not sustainable" is by far my favorite line in this video

As an Aussie and born in 1994, I grew up in the peak Wiggles era. They did an 18+ (aus drinking age) tour in Syd a few years back and toured all the local RSLs. Tickets sold out in 30 secs. @@taylorberry1735 Don’t you mean “Toot Tooot, Chu-”?
A far better ending then the three stooges
My dad used to tell me that he was the blue wiggle when I was a kid. I used to brag about it until I found out he was messing with me lol.
@@FairieSnuffy By the way, the reason Jeff had the character trait of falling asleep constantly was because he felt he was shy around children.

Man, even in recent footage of Anthony with all the new wiggles members, you can just see in his eyes how much fun he’s having, how much he enjoys what he does. I’m glad at least one of them has been able to stay on to instill the band’s original energy to the next generation of cast members.
And the blue wiggle who will more than likely replace him one day: his own daughter!

This video didn't really go over all the new Wiggles and I'm not too familiar with them. Considering that they're still going strong I'm sure the new ones are just as hardworking and passionate about teaching kids as the old ones.
Even as an adult, seeing the Wiggles outside their costumes just feels weird.

Phew. Brainwashing at its finest. 🐑
As an Aussie myself, my first words were in fact “Hot potato”.

Except Disney put Superstar Limo out of its misery immediately, Big Red Car was left slowly dying an agonizing death that no one noticed.
@Bigga Nigga Its a 40 minute long, well researched documentary; my good man.
@Bigga Nigga Gee I wonder why that could possibly be
Just want to add for all the awesomeness of the wiggles ... have seen them live three times. If his mini episodes are 40 mins then his main ones are gonna average around movie length each time
Some of his early videos were only like 15 minutes long. He did 10k Leagues Under the Sea as a two parter because it would be 25 minutes. It was a big deal when he did a whole park in 30 minutes.
Now he's spending 40 minutes on a single ride and calling it a "minisode"

It’s like how ‘fanny’ is slang for butt here in the US but means ‘vagina’ in the UK.
I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one! I was confused as well!

Pretending to be a Wiggle Ambassador has got to be better than those horrific plastic imitations.
lmao you're right
I was so faceblind I definitely wouldn’t have noticed lol
My youngest daughter is a blippi fan, and I had to point out that some episodes//live performances are just some random dude pretending to be blippi.
Kids just see the costume and that's enough.
Mall Santas anyone?
I think my favourite Wiggles fact is that whenever they posed with children, they created their signature finger gun wiggling so that they never had to physically touch children to avoid any backlash.
Not just avoiding physical contact but also so their hands were always completely visible in pictures so no one could accuse them of secretly touching outside of frame.
That's really smart of them. It apparently didn't stop people though.
Major props for editing the audio of "big red car" to be slightly shorter every time. That had me laughing.
Wasn't sure if others had noticed. That's the best part for me.
@dmspilot definitely it was part of the joke that made it work. Reminds me of a Jenny Nicholson video. Chef's kiss

I'm sure the Disney of today wouldn't let someone do that.
the milkshake duck twist is that it kept scratching itself while drinking the milkshakes. somebody’s gotta do something about this
@@stevethepocket He had other interests, such as owning (or at least being part of) a large shopping mall near Brisbane.
"Sorry Disney, but if my theme park is a rip-off of Disney World, why does my park have soul and your park is soulless?"
