  • Countdown to Extinction is a dark-ride attraction that opened at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on April 22nd, 1998, and closed on May 1st, 2000. The attractions features a turbulent journey through the Cretaceous period, featuring scenes populated with dinosaur animatronics. In this video we take a look at the history of Animal Kingdom, the reasons why Dinoland was built over the Beastly Kingdom, the history of the attractions, its eventual change to the Disney movie Dinosaur to promote the animated film of the same name, and the attractions’ future.

    DINOSAUR received a major refurbishment in 2016. Repairs to the animatronics, sound, lighting, and paint touch ups were made. New fossil exhibits were put in the queue. Also, some new effects were added. The comsognathus that were jumping over the vehicle (in 2000 their movements were stopped and they were lit with strobe lights) were replaced with carefully placed screens showing CGI compsognathus fleeing the meteor shower. They also brought back an effect that was turned off in 2000, a green laser net capturing the iguanadon.

      I remember my last time at WDW in 2012 that some of the exhibits were very inaccurate even at that time so I'm glad they changed and refurbished the attraction. I wish Disney kept the fears in the ride bc that was the point of WDW, to appeal to adults, teens, and kids. I feel that the corporation has lost that goal now.....

Didn't see any jumping comsognathus, and the 3rd appearance of the Carnotaurus animatronic which starts running after your car wasn't working and just sat there instead... Quite disappointing...

      I mean, he wasn't technically wrong. It (somehow) grossed more worldwide than any Eisner-era 2000s Walt Disney Animation movie, and that includes Lilo and Stitch which sparked a massive franchise that to this day is still milked at the parks. Plus, at the time, it got better reviews than certain other ambitious pet projects that Eisner hoped would start a franchise (namingly Atlantis). It's probably just that making a TV show or a direct-to-DVD Dinosaur sequel (like the other animated Disney sequels at the time) was out of the cards because DIsney wasn't equipped with the technology or skilled employees required to make a lower-budget CGI project yet. They had Disneytoon for cheap 2D, but nothing for cheap 3D that was meant to look as realistic as possible.

    I rode it recently and you not only have to narrowly avoid getting blasted away by the meteor, but also get a face full of the Carnotaurus as you return to the present. One thing I enjoyed about the ride is that it is one of the few Disney World rides still remaining that you could describe as "frightening" and it is nice to ride something at Disney World that is a little more intense.

    I hadn't realized that the original finale was animation of the asteroid coming down to hit you. Story-wise, that actually makes more sense--on the other hand, that last appearance by the Carnotaurus is more visually impressive.

    One small correction: the Pepper's Ghost effect featuring the iguanadon on the back of your vehicle WAS active for a very short time, during the soft opening that was only accessible to Annual Passholders. I was there and I remember quite vividly seeing the iguanadon on the back of the car--it was a neat effect. I also found a thread of several other people who were at the soft opening and also remember it (I had to go look it up while watching this video, to make sure I wasn't crazy, because I KNEW I remembered it operating!).

    I went to Dinosaur earlier this year due to me not only loving Dinosaurs but also because I've loved Disney's Dinosaur since it first came out when I was young. Needless to say I loved the ride and was impressed even with Dinoland's showing age and it's neighbor being Pandora (which I also went and loved, the long lines were worth it imo). I really do want Dinosaur to stay though since it's the only memory Disney currently has tying to the film and I don't want it to be forgotten like Treasure Planet was (another movie from Disney that I always loved).

      I for one think that it is great that they got rid of the poachers. It kind of gave guests the message that if we don't do something, and protect these magnificent creatures, these wonderful animals that we were seeing might become endangered or even extinct. Without that message, I feel that I can now go on a real hunting safari without feeling any guilt. Thanks Disney.

    • @antifagoat6591
      @antifagoat6591 5 лет назад +3

      Lol. I wasn't sure if you were being serious there.
      I honestly think they could have had it both ways -a story about poaching and a fun look at real-life animals - if they'd thought it through a little better. Make the ride have two tracks, or a track that diverges into a fork. One track is for the story about the elephants with less live animals but more thrills and the other is a breeze through a synthetic savannah with all the real animals you could dream of. That way you can cry your eyes out on one attraction without the animals messing up the story and then go re-ride the other as many times as you want and see all the different living animals.

    • @UmmYeahOk
      @UmmYeahOk 5 лет назад +3

      Sinister Sweet yeah I was being sarcastic. The park is all about conservation, so for them to take away such a powerful message seems pretty odd.
      The poacher version is actually the same route, just with a one or two minute detour. The safari radio would occasionally interrupt and inform the driver of poachers being spotted nearby while watching real animals, then being told that they need our help, so we detour a little ways but the baby elephant (fake) had already been rescued, so the driver goes back to almost where we left off. It’s pretty short, but I guess does add 2 minutes to a busy ride.
      I remembered the scene being pretty boring, but I am pretty spoiled, so having seen it several times before, I had no interest in fake shenanigans. But most people still treat WDW as a once in a lifetime trip, so its new and exciting for people who’ve never been.

I worked at Hollywood Studios in the fall of 2019 and at least once a week I'd get up to be at AK right at opening and I'd run over to Dinoland and ride it 10x in a row with absolutely no wait and then head over to Studios for work.. such a gem of a ride, thanks for this video!

      Honestly, I'm pretty sad in general about the idea of bringing Indiana Jones stuff to AK. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love the franchise (a lot) - but it doesn't tie into the concept of "Animal" Kingdom...at all. The guy's an archeologist. He literally studies *human* history. Also I love dinosaurs because I suppose I'm still an 8 year old at heart. :p

    Are we SURE that the pepper's ghost effect was never used in the ride? This has always bothered me because I have a very vivid memory about this effect. Kinda. See, when I went to Disney in 2001, my mother and I were in line for this ride but I oped out of riding at the last minute as I was young and a chicken on rides and I got freaked out a bit in the cue line. So I did not ride, my mother rode alone. When she got off the ride, I asked her about it and she talked about how you find the dino and you then at the end you "see the dinosaur in the car with you." I distinctively remember her describing the effect as that cus she thought it was neat.

    Whoa, hang on, you missed a few different refurbishments. I consider there to be three main iterations of this attraction. The first two you covered, but with the refurb from 2016, a number of effects were updated such as the projected compys instead of physical ones, as well as new projected asteroid debris throughout the attraction. New lighting effects also created a different sense of atmosphere while also showing you new backgrounds. The second encounter with the Carnotaurus also had the updated strobes, creating a much scarier and intense encounter. It's a shame that they didn't reactivate the flying pterodactyl though.

    • @yeemcgee8149
      @yeemcgee8149 5 лет назад +4

      Yeah it seems like they brought back a few of the old effects fog, the laser field on the iguanodon, moving compys, carnotaurus chase sounds, the Star field at the beginning, strobes, and asteroid debris I think it makes it a much more intense ride

    • @GrimlanderMG
      @GrimlanderMG 5 лет назад

      The flying pteranodon will never be reactivated unless Disney changes policy. No rides will have active show elements above guests heads unless they are secured a certain way. That's why the meteors don't move on primeval whirl either, they were deactivated.

      @@kevinpauly6342 Alright, time for me to NOT say ur wrong. But instead explain why not only do I think JP is better, but why it us the best ride ever made. 1. The jungle and river landscape is beautiful. Compare that to a dark jungle that's indoors at Animal kingdom. 2. The animatronics are some of the biggest you will ever see. The t Rex at Tue end is more impressive than the 3 carnotaur Disney animatronics. 3. JP has a simple, straightforward story. Extinction has a wild find this specific dinosaur story that's fine, but JP simply puts u in the situation of the movie. A calm tour goes horribly wrong. I don't need anything else. And 5, there is no finale drop on a ride that is more thrilling and adrenaline pumping, than JP's. Extinctions drop is wimpy, and you don't get wet.(though i suppose getting wet is a personal preference) But, again, I respect your opinion, and I'm just here to explain my view.

      Instead of the Indiana Jones land, they should rip out Primeval Whirl and the Dino-Rama stuff and remake it as what it was originally intended to be, a whole land themed around a paleontological dig. There was going to be a roller coaster called "Excavator" with weird junk-sculpture dinosaurs. All that got nixed by the budget cuts when they were building the land.

      Paul Echols That honestly makes it worse. It’s such a lazy land compared to the rest of the park. Primeval Whirl is laughably bad and should be replaced.

      Primeval Whirl makes me sick, and the theming is just so un-Disney and boring. It's a real step down from what we've come to expect from Disney imagineering.

    “Remember those locked co-ordinates...were in”. One of my fave rides and so many quotes

    What’s funny is that you can see dragons in the parking lot

      They still had dragons around the park for a while, including a dragon head statue at the entrance of the park and a dragon shaped rock formation from the now closed Discovery River Boats.

    Even if I don´t like the Dinoland-Area, but DINOSAUR is an awesome experience!
    In my opinion it uses the best ride system Disney has in it´s portfolio. Indiana Jones is still my favorite Disney-ride. Thanks for this very informational video. Love your channel!

    Easily one of my favorite rides at Disney. Not only are the dinosaurs awesome and frightening, but the ride is super dark and very bumpy. A lot of fun!!

    I know you mainly do Disney and universal videos, but I’d LOVE a video on Journey to Atlantis Sea World Orlando. Especially because I have vivid childhood memories of this ride being terrifying but awesome and I recently saw it’s current state in a video and it’s...pretty disappointing.

    I loved Disney's Dinosaur though! Really wish they had made a franchise out of it, even incorporating the Time Rover and stuff into its sequels. I mean that would make for some awesome stories!

    I really think they should get rid of the rest of dinoland and keep Dinosaur. Dinosaur is a great ride but the rest of the land is kinda cheap. They can do a much better job

      I agree, the other attractions in the area are not that appealing and really doesn't make the overall Dinoland USA a appealing place.

    I hope the rumors about Dinoland and the Dinosaur ride being transformed into Indiana Jones are not true, cause they're unique and makes sense in terms of Animal Kingdom's overall theme. They don't deserve to be replaced by an IP that has barely anything to do with animals! Indiana Jones is just an action and adventure franchise!
