The Theme Park History of Splash Mountain (Disneyland/Tokyo Disneyland/Magic Kingdom)

- Splash Mountain is a log flume dark ride that opened at Disneyland on July 17th, 1989, Tokyo Disneyland on October 2nd, 1992, and October 3rd, 1993. Based on the characters, stories and songs from the 1946 Disney film Song of the South, the attraction costed 75 million dollars, making it one of the most expensive attraction ever built by Disney at the time. In this episode we take a look at how Tony Baxter came up with the for the attraction and its construction, the ride itself, and the differences between all three attractions.

I am a day after it shut down. Very sad, one of my favorite rides at Disney. Tbh it's one of the rides you instantly associate with Magic Kingdom. Hopefully the retheme is good, unfortunately Disney hasn't had the best track record for new stuff recently. They better have Beignets at magic kingdom now to make it a zip-a-dee do da day.

Eisner was truly Walt's Successor, he was still business, but he had that same childlike charm that Walt had and he gave us some of the great Disney classics...I can't say the same for Iger.

Man, I will never not enjoy how they tried to sell Splash Mountain as a badass thrill ride.
I thought the same thing! I know the ending is pretty thrilling but everything else about the ride says otherwise.
@@ThemeParkHistory Not gonna lie, before I went on it, I was convinced that it was entirely a lift hill and then the big drop because that was the only thing ever shown. I wasn't expecting the storytelling and music.

That shits terrifying dude, but then again rides give me bad almost panic attack like experiences so literally everything scares me.
Tbf, at the time this was the tallest and fastest drop for a water ride ever built.
It's such a zip-a-dee-doo-dah coincidence that this just came out! I just rode this in Florida yesterday and verbally told one of my friends that I didn't know much about Splash's history besides the re-purposing of the animatronics from America Sings! Two Corrections:
14:01 - The castle on the right is not Tokyo Disneyland, it is Disneyland Paris. We mixed up our castles.
16:34 - The soundtrack for Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland are the same, not Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland.
Another great video! The Disneyland Splash Mountain is so brilliantly designed as it so perfectly told in a 3-act structure using the drops as a means to get into the next part of the story...but ALSO that every time you float outside by the big, finale, drop...you see a log plummet down...perfectly building anticipation to the climax! It's sooo good!!

My favorite ride from both Magic Kingdom and Disneyland. Many fond memories. Thanks for putting up the Ernest special about the ride. I forgotten all about that one. I also have another ride you could do. Darkcasltle of Busch Gardens. Keep up the good work.

I thought the Ernest special was weird but when you compare it to the rest of the Disney specials done over the years its not that bad. Darth Syphilis i completely agree that pocahontas is due for a ride and actually fits in critter country better than what would seem like an awkward extension to new orleans square. Plus, if they did do a ride they couldve gave pocahontas story some other form of justice and counter the dated depictions of native americans in the jungle cruise/railroad and tiger lily in peter pan. Come on. Lets get that done right first before doing any other cultures.
Darth Syphilis Exactly. I think that Disney finds it good to close splash mountain because of the BLM movement, which I wish didn’t have to exist. The ride doesn’t talk about any part of the controversial sections of song of the south, plus, now they either have to pull ANOTHER mission breakout and throw a ride in a random section (for now), or make New Orleans square a mega land.

I'd would have loved to see Star Tours or Tomorrow land when I used to live in Asia, but sadly, by the time I moved to the U.S., it's already been changed to more newer and exciting rides
@@keichishoshuko I mean, the story of Splash Mountain and theming is great for younger audiences, hence why it's so popular (alongside being a classic). Besides, Disney usually cherishes these kinds of classic attractions and wants them to stick around as they are; they wouldn't think of retheming Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain, Peter Pan, or Small World, but Splash Mountain is the one to get the boot. The controversial song could have been changed while keeping the ride intact, but instead it's being rethemed to one of the least popular animated films in the grand scheme of things.
Ngl, this is one of THE best Theme Park channels out there.
This is my favorite ride at Disney World. Is a great combination or classic dark ride, water ride, some thrills, and a good ride length.

We were way too far into production of this video to cancel or postpone it, as if we did we wouldn't have another video out until the end of the month. I don't think it will be that big of a deal, as Defunctland's video focuses more on Tales of the Okefenokee.

Its pretty weird that animatronic animals were so charming 20 to 30 years ago and now they are seen as creepy and horrifying. I blame Five Nights at Freddy's for that.

great video btw! this brings me back to my childhood going on the florida version and being terrified at the last drop only because I was 5 years old. Now that I'm much much older I can handle this one no problem since I've gone on way bigger log flume drops like Jurassic Park.
