I don’t know how you manage to make me nostalgic for rides I’ve never even been on, but god do these videos bring a smile to my face.
Glad you enjoy them! thanks
Kingdom of the Dinosaurs was tons of fun. I'm sad it's gone.
It was especially useful during Scary Farm each year, as cast members would stalk ride vehicles.
I was so scared as a kid I remember the big bugs
I feel the same watching all these videos haha! I've been to very few theme parks IRL but I get strong notsalgia vibes from this stuff ragrdless.
I rode this ride a lot as a kid. From 87 to 93 it was groundbreaking… then Jurassic Park came out and outdated the ride instantly. Last time I went to Knotts I was sad to see it was gone.
Hey man, I really appreciate how you tell the stories from theme parks that aren't just Disney or Universal. I never really thought that videos on Knott's or Alton Towers or others could be as interesting as the "big two," but your videos really changed my mind. Keep doing what you're doing!
Knott's has a very interesting history! It goes back a little bit farther than Disneyland. Not sure about Universal.
Knotts is the BIG 2 where im from‼️
I adored Kingdom of the Dinosaurs! It was AMAZING and deserved better.
Me too. Bring it back!
Hearing the sounds of the dinosaurs again after so many years sent a chill up my spine in the best way. My parents got us Knotts passes every year and I LOVED this ride. While I was young and had no idea what was going on behind the scenes, I very much remember the change of the ride suddenly having to stop for long periods and the boring narration coming over. I was heartbroken when the ride was taken out. I am so glad to have found this video so I can relive some of the nostalgia of this ride. To this day, my family and I will reference that wacky voice of the scientist on the ride saying "Turn back! Turn back!"
You could easily get off the ride and walk around but there were employees that would sit on the ride to catch people doing that. They were always in the same places though so once you knew where they were you could get on and off and not get caught or so I hear. I also know someone that did get caught and pretended they were German and did not know any better and the CM let them off with a warning in slow loud English. Totally miss this ride and Berry Tales.
Soooo true. This ride was legendary. I can still remember the exact spots where the workers would hide.
Beaty Tales is back for a ride that is similar to Toy Story Midway Mania in DCA. Looks charming, and it’ll be good to see Knotts utilize original characters
Why would u want to get off tho?
@@booboo4ever24 To pet dinosaurs I suppose. Would have to ask my friends who did.
Bob Gurr! Leota Toombs! "I love steggies!" "Brontosaurus forever" (oh the irony!)
How did dinosaurs go extinct? Mystery solved.... COASTERS! Great episode!
Did you have this saved in notes? Thanksss
@@ExpeditionThemePark Gmail draft! What do I look like, a noob? ;) ...DON'T ANSWER THAT! 😜
Brontosaurus IS forever! It's back, as it's own genus apart from Apatosaurus!
Mystic Mind Analysis MIND BLOWN!
This was a great ride at one point, but it slowly fell into decay. Perhaps with Knott's stepping up its game well someday see a new version of this ride, but hopefully not just a 4D attraction. I have high Hope's fod Knott's here lately, and I would love to see more themed and animatronic attractions. That would be something.
Dinosaur: Am I a joke to you
Kingdom of the Dinosaurs: Yes
Haha
Yes!!!! I’ve been waiting for this video. This ride was my childhood favorite (I was obsessed with dinosaurs). It would be great to see a video on Knott’s Beary Tales and the Timber Log ride at Knott’s.
Thank you for watching. We will cover them in the future!
Krista Motta I just wrote a similar comment. I loved this ride so much as a kid and have always missed it. I’ve also missed the Soap Box racers and the Sideways Shack. So happy for a video about this rides history, as I’ve only been able to find short videos here and there as an adult. 😊
Krista Motta Ninol
This attraction is one of my favorite things that has ever existed on the planet! 🦖🦕 I shared your video with the producer of Son of Dinosaurs (the special with Gary Owens and Eric Boardman) and the co-author of Knott’s Preserved as I’m sure they’ll appreciate it. Great retrospective! 👍🏻
They should have just revamped this and called it Return to the Kingdom of the Dinosaurs instead of the ill-conceived Iron Reef.
TheMonsterGroovy Apparently Iron Reef is closing down.
Well, Bear-y Tales coming back. But it would be fantastic if Kingdom comes back as another ride. I think having both Kingdom of The Dinosaurs and Bear-y Tales together would be a win-win situation. Maybe one day...
I honestly think there’s a market for it now after the Jurassic World redesign at Universal.
I know I’d love to see an older, grungier dinosaur based ride that doesn’t look like an Apple store and makes use of screens. I don’t hate the new Jurassic ride, but I vastly prefer the Jurassic Park aesthetic over the Jurassic World one.
This was, by far, my most favorite ride at Knotts as a kid. Thank you so much for doing this video!
This attraction is right up my alley. I miss this attraction
This was the ride of my life. I can still hear "you're going too far back" anytime I want to.
Always wanted to ride it + Knott's Beary Tales. Yes! Knott's is a (special park) You can't "cookie cutter" it like the other properties. It's like the original Six Flags Over Texas (Arlington, TX) While I love roller coaster, there has to be a balance to make the themed park experience work. Your video had the best "in ride" footage I've ever seen. Thanks so much!
An Expedition Extinct all about a Dinosaur Themed Ride.......I see what you did there!!!
I've been on this ride before, and I still miss it to this day (I enjoy dinosaur-themed dark rides).
Cedar Fair had no idea how omnimovers worked (the fact that they're designed to make lines move faster).
I’m glad someone was brought in to stop the complete dismantling of Knott’s.
They were late, so many good ones GONE!
This is the video I’ve been waiting for!! Please please please do more Expedition Knotts-especially this Halloween with Scary Farm history! ❤️
My mum and I used to love this, was about the only ride she would go on in the park.
Really glad you made a video about this! Could you make a video about Pacific Ocean Park in Venice California? I find it fascinating that it had more visitors than Disneyland one year.
I loved this ride.
90s kids and Dino’s just went together perfectly.
Now you need to go further back in time and do a video on Knott's Beary Tales.
:D
This is the best video you have done! This was my favorite ride at Knott’s and I was always so excited for this ride when I was a kid. I saw the finesse and deterioration of this ride, but it will always live on in my heart and my memory as one of the best rides that has ever lived. Tbh, this video made me cry as I remember this being a ride my entire family went on every year.
I rode this once in my lifetime... but I loved it as a kid!
Such a great attraction!
Late to the party on this video. Wow. I was 5 years old in 1988. I've only been to this park once, since I live on the East Coast. I remember waiting what seemed like forever to get on this ride, and being board and generally a pain. I was 5, what do you expect? I very vividly remember the lightning tunnel entrance for the time machine. I also think the scientist had a German accent and said "Ve are going back und time" but could be totally wrong. Yes, I purposely spelled it that way. Again, I was very young. Then I remember being completely terrified of the dinosaurs. I remember having horrible nightmares about dinosaurs for months afterwards. I've even had those nightmares reoccur in my adult years. I wouldn't say I'm scared of dinosaurs, but I certainly don't seek out dinosaur themed rides or movies. Seeing this video, the on ride footage, totally brought me back. It's amazing how the mind of a child is so much sharper and memory so much more vivid than that of an adult. Thanks for the video, and thanks to anyone who's cared to read this far!
This is my Boysenberry jam. I remember thinking the new ride had to do with Disneyland renovating Fantasyland around the same time. In a parallel to today, Disney's big move caused ripples throughout the other theme parks.
The strongest memory of the attraction was the Hollywoodland on the mural and a caveman half frozen in the Ice Age night. It must've freaked me out as a kid, but not the sharpest thing I remember. I also suspected the ADA helped hasten the decision to close the attraction. Many attractions built for fully able patrons were inaccessible. That and increase cost of maintaining older had a hand in shutter KoD, the Skyway and Submarine Voyage.
One question: how was Cedar Fair a novice? hadn't it been running Cedar Point and King's Island for years up until that point?
Grate video
The old LA Mural is underneath the new iron reef background. The iron reef background is made of vinyl like a billboard. It has been glued over the old Los Angeles mural with a water based adhesive for removal at a later date. The art work is more protected than covered.
If you would like a video of the vinyl peeling away I can shoot that for you as there is a small spot where the Miral has been revealed.
Knotts berry tales heck yes, post that peeling vinyl pic!
You got it
That mural was a piece of art. I always liked looking at it
KOTD was one of my favorite KBF rides (second only to the Calico Mine Train) and by far my wife's favorite. Thanks so much for this behind-the-scenes look at a Knotts classic attraction.
Oh this made my heart sad 😔
I miss this ride so much. Thanks for the lovely memories 💚
Love your work. I stumbled on this chanel when I was getting ready for a trip to Carowinds. When I when there this.year its was sad to see my all time favorite rollercoaser Thunderoad gone. Hopefully you will cover that history.😊
I gotta applaud Knott's on probably the best, most accurate dinosaur-ride ever made! But that being said; I hope they keep bringing in more cool Steampunk-themed rides like this and 'Iron Reef'! What they lack in scale, they always make up for in quality! =)
I remember always getting on this ride every week because My family lived down the street from Knots!!
Kingdom of the Dinosaurs was awesome. I spent many Saturdays at Knott's as a child and this was easily one of my top 3 rides. If you started your day in Calico ghost town by the afternoon you'd be headed into the roaring 20s and Fiesta village. I never had to wait in a line and the relaxed atmosphere of the ride was the perfect way to close out a day of rides before heading over to Mrs. Knotts for chicken dinner and boysenberry juice. These videos make me nostalgic for my childhood spent at Knott's Berry Farm. I wish Cedar Faire would bring back the old charm of this wonderful park.
Just so you know, snippets of this tour were pulled from a old 80's Dinosaur Doco titled, "Son of Dinosaurs" hosted by actors Eric Boardman and the late Gary Owens (Voice Actor for Space Ghost, Blue Falcon, and other cartoons shows). That show has since been released on DVD if anyone wants to see the full tour in completion. DVD is titled "Dinosaurs Dinosaurs Dinosaurs" and distributed by Midwich Ent.
I still remember the music, atmosphere, and dinosaurs. It was a great ride, and great memories.
You were a legend if you managed to make-out with someone on this ride while on a school trip to Knotts.
This was my favorite theme park ride. Thanks for the awesome video.
I loved this ride, it always reminded me of the movie Clifford when he went to dinosaur world
Thank you so much for this episode. Right back to my childhood!
Omg “Spill the Beans” is what used to be said before “spoilers”
Also, I still remember that blast of refreshingly cold air on that dinosaur ride as a relief from the harsh Orange County summer sun
Aww! I didn’t know that ride was gone. I remember it was my favorite ride when I was little. I wouldn’t leave unless I went on that ride. I’m so sad to hear it is gone and I’ll never be able to take my kids on it. The last time I went on it the carts were still separated. I remember thinking it needed an update because some of the figures stopped moving.
Can you do a video on The Timber mountain log ride next on expedition Knottsberry farm.
Can't give away all the secrets of what's coming!
I honestly hope one of the higher ups from Cedar fair watches this video. Knott's has really been slacking with their dark rides over the past couple of decades. It would be nice to get a brand new dark ride with animatronics. Either a Snoopy/Peanuts theme or a ride similar to Pirates of the Caribbean but retheme with Cowboys and the old west!
i loved this ride more than anything, thank you for this video. so many special memories. i really hope they bring it back
Wow this video was awesome Sam! It was very informational and interesting! Keep up the incredible work!
as a kid that music got to me, it sounded scary among everything else but as an adult, the music is such a classic.
Another great episode! REALLY loving the Knott's stuff in particular. Keep it up!
Listen, I’ve watched all your videos and have liked every single one... but before I even watch the rest of this video, you literally have earned the subscribe button and bell! Not only that, but you went up to the top of my list as favorites! I wondered if anybody even remembered this ride! I rode it a lot when I was a little kid and remember it fondly! Thank you x 100
Ahh yes,I definitely miss this ride.♥️ And now do an episode on Knott’s Beary Tales!
This was favorite ride at Knott's when I was a kid!
I remember the ride stopping for extended periods in the scene with animatronic wolves. Imagine being 6 years old on this rude, bring stuck for what seemed like forever in front of animatronic wolves with red eyes. That was my childhood. Despite being terrified, I loved this ride.
My brother was the last rider on it. He misses it. I now work at the park. Some people remember it others remember berry tails
thank you so much for i been asking others youtubers to do but no onewas paying attention to me. as a kid this ride scared me so much.
I miss this ride so much!! I used to ride it everytime I went to Knotts berry with my parents! The dinosaurs scared me a lot as a kid and I was looking forward to seeing it again as an adult but it was already closed :’( this ride will forever be remembered in my heart!
God, I loved this ride as a kid. The story element fascinated me--there weren't many Knotts rides with a narrative and characters. And even so, it was a bit janky even before the reworking with the trains; I got stuck on that ride plenty of times. Oddly, my fondest memory is getting stuck in front of the dimetrodon with an older sibling. We ended up doing Muppet voices to match its mouth movements for 10 minutes or so until things got moving again.
I recall going on this ride during its last days and let me tell you, it was falling apart. literally, dilapidated sets , broken figures in the dark best describes it visually. but, it wasnt the only ride in that state, the mine ride and log rides were also in shit shape. the elk from KOD was moved into Timber mountain log ride I recall, it just looked like it was tossed in there. lol
This was always my favorite ride at Knotts when I was a kid
I remember in that insect infested lift hill- they had little strings hanging that would ticlkle the passing guests
Really well done video! I loved this ride as a kid and was sad when they closed her down and added the terrible iron headache. I wish they would bring it back but..
I remember this ride. It was really cool. I was sad when they f
Got rid of it. It’s one of the best things I remember from that park as a kid. I think that dino ride was the reason my family even took a trip to Knotts instead of Disney, for once. I went more often as a teen, for Knotts Scary Farms...which is really fun. Or at least, it use to be.
My best dinosaur experience (as both a biologist and a dino-fan), was Disney's DINOSAUR. I know it's not as accurate as it should be, but to me it's a fun ride, recreating times and places that no longer exist...and I'm not just talking about the Mesozoic. It perfectly recreates the 90's and dino-mania. I mean the Dino Institute channels a lot of the exhibits and attractions I visited in my childhood and if I didn't know any better when I got back to my hotel room, I'd expect an episode of Jim Henson's Dinosaurs, Paleoworld or Denver the Last Dinosaur waiting for me.
People complain that it's not Indiana Jones and I argue that people who demand it become a temple of doom, really don't understand the point of Animal Kingdom and the ride itself. These were real animals and that extinction is a real thing. How they expect a tomb raiding archaeologist to cover those topics, I don't know. It may use similar mechanics to the Indiana Jones ride, but it's trying to create its own experience, a safari die-hard dinosaur fans like myself could never really take.
While I admit DINOSAUR and Dinoland need updates, I really hope they never go away. Especially since it seems they can do amazing things with the concept of a time traveling safari. I mean UK's "Dinosaurs in the Wild" seemed like an incredible balance of storytelling, science and technology to create something amazing.
Dude! Please keep these prehistoric theme park videos coming! :D I never went on this one, but I *definitely* learned a lot about it from this.
Thank you so much for doing this video! THIS is what I’ve been waiting for!
Thank you for watching!
Expedition Theme Park DO THE BARNEY AND TWEENIES THEATRES AND CBEEBIESLAND AT ALTON TOWERS PLEASE!
This is one of my favorite video lived for history of theme park.
Just wanted to say this was probably my favorite ride back when I was a kid, I miss it dearly and am so happy there's dark ride footage uploaded on RUclips somewhere, because it was a really enthralling experience. Thank you also for the vid with stories of how it came to be, truly fascinating!
KOD walked to Jurrasic Park The Movie and The Ride could run. Honestly, one of the bursts in fascination in dinosaurs can be attrubited to the attraction. That book/movie begun my fascination with dinos, and I'm kindof upset I won't be able to be on what was essentially a moving, theatric museum. That is an amazing attraction, and it can reside in my dreams
I thought this was a bad fever dream from my childhood!
I really think you put out the best theme park content on RUclips. I get so bloody excited when your videos come out. Can you do a big thunder mountain one and if possible one on the Steam trains at PortAventura that go around the park, I think that could be cool because they are no longer steam powered they have diesel tenders but I can’t find out why they were changed from steam to diesel.
Thank you so much. Big Thunder will for sure be in the future at some point. I will at least cover PortAventura eventually!
That Silver Bullet commercial is surprisingly really good.
1:42 Those African houses in the upper right corner almost look like progenitors of the JP Visitor Center!
Man I remember the dinosaur that ride what is dope missed that ride
I remember riding this when I was 5. I didn’t remember what the ride was, but I remember a moving sidewalk at the end leading us into the gift shop.
Bob garr still living one of Disney friends has met literally all the disneyland icons
Another great video! I am one of the few people who was saddened to see Beary Tales go back then - but KOD was very timely and well received. Especially to the younger kids, which it felt like Knotts was targeting more back at that time (read: Camp Snoopy). The highlight of that ride was definitely the T-Rex reveal.
To share a funny (and kind of stupid memory): as a teen (14?) on Beary Tales, a friend in the car dated me to reach up and grab one of the leaves hanging down on the last hill. I did grab one, though didn't break it off, and the ride was promptly stopped and we were escorted off the ride and told if we did something like that again, we'd be banned from Knotts. Stupid teens don't realize there are low light cameras on even dark rides.
Andrea Joki that’s a better reason for being booted then spitting at Timber Mountain Log Ride (don’t ask how I know).
I LOVED this ride! Especially on hot days!
It is really cool to see Bob Gerr on different projects. What a legend
I can't really give a fair comment since I only rode this while it was new and i was probably 5-8 years old ... but it was by far my favorite ride out of the entire park.
I always felt that Kingdom of the Dinosaurs was one of the few rides at Knott's that felt like it had "Disney quality" theming as opposed to just being another State Fair level ride. It was getting pretty dilapidated by the time I went, but it was still possible to see what it had once been. We didn't go to Knott's for a few years and when we went back it had been removed, which was really sad.
Cedar Fair basically destroyed the Knott's of my youth, I haven't been back to the park except for a chicken dinner. And sadly, Cedar Fair just purchased our nearby world renown waterpark, and have already been toying with the idea of ruining it. Hey, Cedar Fair, sometimes simple and historical are better than anything new, unless it is done correctly...and you've proven you're no Disney in when it comes to doing things the right way. And even they get it wrong sometimes, but they usually go back and fix it.
With their rumored expansion they need to bring back this ride, I can only imagine how great it would look with the technology we have today. If they have their expansion and if they come up with a new themed land, it should be a dinosaur themed land, including this ride and maybe a themed dinosaur coaster ride. We just have to wait and find out.
It probably would not fit with the theme of the expansion but they are bringing Berry tales back
I loved this ride. When I was really little it was one of the only rides I could get on in the park. Fine with me though because I have always loved dinosaurs and those coasters seemed so intimidating and scary at the time. My dad took me on it and after it was over I got a T-Rex plush from the gift shop. I still have that plush till this day. Little did I know at the time (being like 6) that it was within the rides last years of operation and when I next came back it was gone. Thanks for this video if only for recording this rides existence and bringing me back to my youth.
This ride is easily in my Top 3 most missed attractions. KoD was hardly inferior to the Jurassic park the ride either, which I find honestly a bit barren. The real travesty is how they let this ride SBNO for what seemed like a decade.
I loved this ride so very much! It was cheesy but was So much more fun than Countdown to Extinction/Dinosaur!...
Doing great stuff here. Thanks for the entertainment. 8-)
Cedar Fair DESTROYED everything that was wonderful about Knott's Berry Farm. When the farm was owned by the Knott Family, they allowed school groups in the LA area to tour the Native American Village and cultural displays, as well as when you studied US History you had educators teaching and telling you about the history of the US at Independance hall and also around the Ghost Town area. Cedar Fair just took something that was wonderful, enriching, and unique and flushed it down the toilet. I enjoyed this ride a lot as a kid, and it disappoints me that they just destroyed it. I remember seeing how the park was destroyed in 2011 and I vowed to never go back. Knotts is not the same as what I remember now, just another wanna be Six Flags high thrills park. Knott's used to be the perfect blend of Disney Magic and Six Flags thrills.
Now they got hang time that was most recently coaster right. This is why I loved disneyland bc of dark rides.
I has a pass to Knotts from when I was maybe 9 till I was 15. This was one of my favorite rides at the park growing up. I never realized it was over 7 minutes long! So funny I always thought they ruined it by stopping the continuous motion too.
I have great memories first going on this Dark Ride in the 80's when it first came out in 1987-Such a shame it is gone now with that annoying interactve Dark Ride: Voyage to the Iron Reef-When could you do the: Extinct History for: Phantom Phantasia at Thorpe Park and/or Space Station Zero??
And what idiots Cedar Fair were to change that rides loading station cars and to stop it midway with a talk over during the story telling for: Kingdom of the Dinosaurs -STUPID-course that is going to take you out of the ride vibe
I miss this goofy ride, but I miss even more the Scary Farm overlay “Kingdom of the Lounge Lizards”. So campy, so great.
I remember this ride an loved every second of it. My parents would take me on it multiple times in a since day. In my mind I thought the ride would be at Knotts Berry Farm forever.....boy was I wrong. To the shock of me an my family we couldn't believe they would close it after decades. To this day I can still invision the track layout, sounds, smells an over all experience of the ride. If only it was possible for someone to build a updated version of this beloved attraction.
This is my fav documentary.
Cedar Fair! Do the right thing and bring this attraction back!
They are bringing Berry tails back
Another awesome video. Could you possibly do one on San Francisco's long gone PLAYLAND AT THE BEACH?
Would be awesome- Playland at the Beach wound up with Bud's first idea for the Calico Mine, a traditional ghost train!
You should do one of these about Kent Hovind's religious tax scam Dinosaur Adventure Land.
I love all the Knotts vids! They’re my favs!
I miss this attraction. I can't believe it laid dormant for over a decade.
Lesson learnt: too much down pressure isn't good
Ben Lonsdale cannot be overemphasized.
The only vivid memory I have of this ride was stopping on the uphill climb and being scared out of my mind. Cowering into my mother's side and attempting to block all sources of input.
...
...I was six ya see...
That and also the feeling like I could have just slipped out of the ride vehicle and it made me antsy already before the loud noises and scary animatronics.
i miss this ride
Never got to ride this one but will always remember it from the final shootout in Beverly hills cop 3. 😁🇺🇸🦖🦕
