      That’s not the point, because EVs were too expensive to begin with. Now they are beginning to have a reasonable price. (Remember when the first cell phones were released, only rich idiots bought them. Now everybody can afford one.)

      I very much is in part “the point”,
      Resell value, has tanked, used EV prices have tanked, insurance rates have skyrocketed, why because that low maintenance idea? Ya that was a lie, the estimated mpg the government told you? Also a lie, and they got caught!
      The clear lack of infrastructure to run this whole mess? Is not in place, all of this is exactly the point and it doesn’t matter how cheep they are.

      Unfortunately we still have to Elect Politicians to change these Policies because the FACT is they knew it would take decades to FORCE a transition & they weren't in it for the MONEY. They are pushing EVs because they believe its profitable so we must Elect better Politicians & America needs to start with Trump in 2024. Trump is the only President i've heard call this climate change movement a HOAX. We need people like that to push back. Too many politicians talk about meeting the Left halfway which is exactly what the Left's goal is when they go to extremes. It's great that so many people are rejecting EVs but it's gonna take more.

      Joliet Illinois dud not allow a commercial truck charging station because it could consume more electricity that the local market supports for all uses

      NJ just passed a law that registration of an EV has a 4yr surcharge of $250 a year for 4 years up front, so they collect $1000 surcharge on every EV sale. The stupid aspect is that they also give a sales tax exemption on EV’s. That’s a $3,300 discount on a $50k sale. Why give a $3,000 tax discount but then add $1,000 to registration fees?

      don't worry, they are going to start taxing by mileage..which will require getting a module installed in your vehicle to spy on you. This will also apply to ICE vehicles. Planned to start in 2026. This means ICE will pay road taxes by the mile AND at the pump. Funny how that works out. It will of course also report other data, but that won't be disclosed, just like onstar is doing, amongst others. Oh, and it will also include the vehicle disabling off switch, just in case they decided you've been bad.

      If you want a small car for around town, and can charge at home, but NOT in your attached garage, and you live where electricity is made from renewables, and you are rich enough to deal with higher initial price and massive first year depreciation, and you are rich enough to pay for more expensive tires every year or so, and you live where it never gets below zero, and you never drive on potholed or dirt roads where the battery can be damaged, and you are rich enough that you don't mind paying massive insurance payments because minor accidents can cause the car to be totaled due to battery or frame (gigapress) damage, and you never plan going a long distance, the an EV is for you. You are a rich city dwelling virtue signaler who needs to spend more time in nature, instead of showing your devotion to the "planet".

    I havn't bought an EV because I can't afford one. I bought my Hyundai Elantra used for $13,000 with 14,000 miles on it a few years ago. I can't find an EV in that price range.

      Until EVs support field servicable batteries there won't be a strong resale market for electric vehicles. The future batteries will improve, but at what cost? Military grade hardware? It took years and years for LED lightbulbs to replace incandescent. EV batteries won't be economical for $25,000 cars by 2030 - unless they come from China, and that will destroy the U.S. auto industry.

    And it is just not possible to charge a 350 mile battery in a "desired" 20 minutes ,like you well said; required is a 95Kwh battery; at 220 Volts you need 95000/220, or 430 Ah; that is in 1 hour; in 20 minutes, you'd need 430 x 3. or 1290 AMPERES !!! at 5 Amps per mm2 of copper wire, you'd need 258 mm2 of copper wire, that is a diameter of 2 x sqrt(258/3.14), or 18 mm ,almost the diameter of a man's thumb,and you'd need 3 conductors for that, live, neutral and earth; that is next to impossible to handle and connect to the car, and if you'd want to charge up a few cars at the same time you'd need an incoming line as thick as a person's arm; on top of that, there exists no conector that handles that current without special bolts and tools,so, not practical at all.
    And here is another: Lithium batteries, at present, only hold roughly ~200 to 265Watts per Kg of their total weight; 95000 W/265W is 358 Kg, or 790 pounds, a hefty payload to haul around all the time;
    Diesel or gasoline are just hugely better in their energy content, in the order of roughly ~10000 Wh per Kg , or 35 times better, and you can refill the tank is 5 minutes,almost anywhere; so, i am not interested in BCs,Battery Cars,or Elecos, at all.

      Edit needed: "only hold roughly ~200 to 265Watts per Kg of their total weight" Watts should be Watt-Hours or wH for short. Also, "of their total weight" is redundant when units are "per kG". But good job on pointing out how ridiculous it is for EVangelists to claim technology advancements can reduce charging times - like I've put out in my own posts, when EV batteries are the size of a dog turd, you still have to supply the kWh to charge them up. NOTHING can change that! Good day! : )

      Well, you obviously haven't done any research on how EV's are charged, their architecture etc, or you are deliberately putting out false information.
      EV's do not fast change at home, they trickle change, because like you acknowledge the power to supply that rate of charge isn't there. Luckily they don't need to change that fast, because they charge while the owner is home.
      Fast charging obviously can't be done at low voltages for the reasons you have mentioned. The amps needed would require massively thick cables. This is why high voltages of around 800v are used. ICE cars are at best around 25-30% efficient. While an EV is around 90% efficient.
      EV's are faster, cleaner, quieter. They require far less maintenance and don't poison the air we breath in towns and cities, which cause many respiratory health issues and increased deaths.
      It is human nature to resist change, as we can look back in history and witness. I'm sure most people on this blog will disagree with what I have written, but that's ok, because better technologies always win out in the end.
      P.S. I'm old, I love ICE cars, but I know they will be replaced by EV'S.
      That is an undeniable fact!

      @@grycripps- you haven’t grasped the fact EVs use massive amounts of electricity. 800V is the total voltage of the whole connected battery pack. When such a pack is fast charged; it still needs to charge off grid 220V. To charge fast that requires very large currents and thick expensive cables. The truth is ; batteries are an inefficient way to store energy compared to the high energy density of a tank of fuel. So you’ll say that since an EV is so efficient at using that limited supply it’s still great? Wrong. When the EV has to carry around its ton / fraction of ton battery - that’s not efficient. The only form of EV that makes any sense is the PHEV, which allows an ICE to be shut down in cities to help keep the air clean. Otherwise EVs are just a way to restrict freedom.

    If you are a tradesman what point is an Electric Pickup used to charge your tool batteries if at the end of the day you cannot drive home from the loss of charge.
    FFS Electric vehicles are NOT the answer to transport needs, reduce the emissions form the major producers; of which CARS are nowhere near a major part.

      The emissions thing you mentioned is the ONE thing that nobody talks about. Car pollution is small potatoes compared to UNREGULATED DIRTY THIRD WORLD INDUSTRIAL POLLUTION and it makes no sense to complain about car emissions which are far less than industrial pollution which no one talks about. Why doesn't anyone want to talk about the massive elephant in the room? Even if cars didn't exist, china and india would still be polluting the shit out the world environment and no one seems to notice or care.

    It's just my opinion of course, but less EV's being sold might also speed-up disinterest in them. Customers may feel like 'why should I be the guinea pig, let someone else take the financial hit'. Just my theory of course & it's sort of like the opposite of the Macy's rush, where people jump in and buy crap because they don't want to miss out. Price, Range, Recharging & Battery hours are just some of the hurdles before the public will be interested. Then you'll have issue with insurance, etc. This'll be fun to watch!

      @@josepeixoto3384 Yep , thought the same thing myself , we had a nice period where we could buy good cheap reliable vehicles that lasted a long time( ford laser was another , toyota corrola , and a bunch more ) , where cheap to service , and had just what the average person needs and not filled up with gimmicky shit , they even had jacks and spare tyres , and oh my gawd , .... a dash binnacle right in front of the driver , and knobs and buttons in convenient places so you did not have to look down at the stupid touch screen on the centre of the dash ( cough ... tesla :) ) , and asshole politicians tell us these useless forking EV things are the future ! :) :) not sure if serious !

    IIRC, should not count Rivian for anything, as their pick-up is the base frame for Amazon EV delivery trucks and Amazon owns half(all)of Rivian. Rivian doesn't need to sell one truck as they are basically in house to Amazon for their trucks

      The unspeakable powers that should not be own the governments and corporations are pushing the EVs. The market for EVs wasn't there to begin with, because EVs can't do what ICE vehicles do or replace ICE vehicles.

    Current EV's are stupid. They are way larger than they should be. Pure Electric Vehicles should be street legal Golf Carts made for going for groceries and big box retailers where the maximum range could be 40 miles and a maximum speed of 45 mph. This could be done with deep cycle lead acid batteries instead of the massive and expensive batteries currently being used. You should be able to replace the batteries at a Walmart automotive service shop while you are shopping. I guarantee those would sell very well because currently nothing like that is available. Currently our DOT standards simply do not allow those types of vehicles to be used on even low speed roads or around town where they would fit in perfectly. Instead the only choice is a very expensive and heavy vehicle that can travel at 70 plus MPH.

      exactly. a little two seater for old adies to drive to church or the rifle range or whatever it is old ladies do now... leave it on charge for a week, go to the shops. then back again.
      go to see old pearl or mabel that live too far away for any sane person to drive (15km..., lol)? well, can pull up to one of those places that does them battery things, two small boxes that some attendant pulls out, puts on a trolley, swaps them for something else... pay a small fee... service, charge... batteries get inspected, placed back on a charging rack... gets back home, leaves on charger for the next week...
      works on scooters...
      wanna drive an f150 lightning? you get twenty of those boxes, and you gotta swap em over every ten km...

    Why is it most EVs look like the old Tin Plate Toy Cars! Not only crap looking but not suitable for purpose in most cases. How did Auto industry let Governments run their businesses? Think it might be several decades, or never, before E Aircraft can fly the world routes and they are huge emissions producers!

    I see a different thing happening.
    EVs are in general not sold through dealerships. More than half of US EV sales are Teslas, and Tesla does not use dealerships.
    We see manufacturers revising their contracts with dealerships so EVs can be purchased online and delivered to a dealership for pickup.
    If the dealership is only involved with handing over the car, it should not add more than a few hundred bucks to the cost.
    Avoiding the dealer represents a $3000 savings per vehicle.
    Because of this and similar factors EVs will generally be ordered online for you to pick up at a scheduled date - no opportunity for excess inventory.
    Battery prices continue to fall, allowing the major EV manufacturers to drop prices while still making profits.
    At this rate, EVs will cost less than ICE in about 2025/2026.
    That is if ICE prices remain the same - but they will not remain the same because we have an excess of 1m ICE cars in inventory - they have dropped prices to sell inventory... ICE prices must go up after they clear the inventory for those companies to survive.
    Seems inevitable to me.

    I can't imagine the founders, when writing the Constitution, thought that "interstate commerce" would allow the Federal government to stipulate the design of wagons and buggies or the breed of horse used to pull it. The 10th amendment reserves this sort of thing to the states or people. Such overreach is how we waste money and divide ourselves.

    EV's don't meet the transportation needs of 90% of drivers. That led me to make a prediction 15 years ago that EV sales would never top 10% of the market. That seems to be just where the collapse started. Once you've used up all of your fan boy customers (who will put up with the EV's shortcomings long term), you're done. The marginal sales that folks made out of curiosity dried up even faster as the word got around. They also don't meet the requirements of 99% of pickup drivers, which is why that collapsed first and fastest. Adam Smith's "invisible hand" at work again.
    I've maintained all along that the government's talk about mandating EV's, and the industry willing to bet the farm on an ICE ban, would be a major disaster. Once you've "untooled" ICE production, it's much harder to tool up again, and this is an industry that is responsible for some 20% of our GDP. The government might be able to mandate what car companies can build, but they can't mandate what consumers will buy. All an ICE ban would do is create a massive black market in gas-powered vehicles.

    A recent Gallup US survey showed that only one-sixth of people either owned or would seriously consider purchasing an EV. Another one-third would consider it, and one-half would not consider purchasing an EV. The market for EVs is nearing saturation, unless huge strides in cost and performance can be achieved very quickly.

    I had a Buick Lacrosse hybrid. Because of the many travels i do, i wanted to upgrade range. I looked at many EVs and the only one i found was the Lucid. A large full size luxury automobile is what i prefer and not provided by EVs. Range is 500 miles but they wanted over 100K for it. So i got the large luxurious Jaguar XJL. I paid 41K for 570 miles of range which is a hell of alot better than 100K for 500 miles of range. Paid off. I fuel up once a month at 3 minutes...Ok, 5 minutes because i godda run in and grab a coffee. Come out with EVs with these fine qualities and improvements, now we're talkin, I'll be the first one at the gates to buy one immediately! If china can come out with EVs that offers over 600 miles of range, so can the United States. Since long range EVs dosent exsist in the United States of America, I'll keep my jaguar XJL and leave well enough alone....

    We have to have a Smog test every two years to make sure our vehicle isn't poluting. Our air quality has improved greatly. All EV's makes no sense at all.

    EV is a nice idea; it just needs two things to MAJORLY improve it; internal and external infrastructure. One, give us batteries that are more stable and longer lasting, as well as improved charging and modulation electronics/software to accommodate said batteries. Two, give us a reliable external infrastructure to match that of existing gasoline and ICE cars (more numerous charging stations). Just conquering those mere two caveats would boost a more positive public reflection of EV overall…

    Legacy makers have not really tried to compete. Still making ICE vehicles mostly and just offering a few EVS as well as still maintaining a dealer network means they will likely NEVER be able to compete. Tesla makes nothing but EVs and has NO dealers so they are ALWAYS cheaper. Also their increasing manufacturing makes their vehicles cheaper as they go along. Aside from that Tesla makes a LOT more profit on EVERY sale and the more they make the cheaper they are. Legacy makers are not selling whereas Tesla does not have that problem. Sadly the legacy makers have been watching Tesla for 10yrs and are still doing things the way they did 100yrs ago.

    EVs make great sense for some people but for the other 80% of us they don’t. A free market would reflect demand not mandates. For many people they don’t have a home where they could actually charge their car slowly overnight. Who wants to spend 1.5 hrs waiting while their car charges when u can fill up an ICE in 5 minutes and there are gas stations everywhere. Fast charging is also hard on batteries. I also imagine the price of electricity will sharply rise as demand rises and I also have to imagine car insurance on EVs (which is already high) would only increase as less and less ICE vehicles exist to offset loses. Probably homeowners insurance will also go up due to the fire risk of having home charging. EVs are heavy and tire wear is much greater and they are tougher on our roads too. Some of these trucks are 3 tons!

    The problem is that the EV mandate was put in place when mass adoption was possible, but well before mass adoption was feasible.
    The two problems are charging infrastructure and battery technology. The problem with the charging infrastructure is that the charging stations do not produce enough revenue to justify investing in them. The battery technology problem is that there is not enough lithium to support an EV mandate and batteries that store their energy in a combustible electrode is a bad idea. All cells that discharge by pulling atoms from an electrode and recharge by plating atoms onto an electrode face the problem the electrode starts out smooth, but gets rougher and rougher with each discharge/recharge cycle. Better production quality delays the failure of the cell, but the cell will always fail. In a lead acid cell, this bulges out the battery case and, with one shorted out cell, the battery is no longer capable of cranking the engine to start. In a lithium cell, the result is usually a catastrophic fire. What is needed is a cell chemistry that does not store the energy in the electrodes, but in the electrolyte. The electrolyte based energy storage allows for the possibility to pump out the discharged electrolyte, pump in fully charged electrolyte, and recharge the electrolyte separately from the vehicle.

    What nobody has even mentioned is that most car buyers, probably over 90%, buy USED. And almost all of those are gas powered vehicles. A huge percentage of U.S. car buyers buy used cars in the $10,000 and under range, and those are ALL gas powered. People are hanging onto their gas powered cars much longer, with many paying way over their cars market value to keep them going. I just had the engine and transmission replaced in my 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis, which had over 400,000 miles on it. It cost way over the market value of the car. But now that car will likely last the rest of my life. The cost of the engine and transmission replacement was peanuts compared to the price of ANY new vehicle, and ALL new vehicles are absolute GARBAGE, not to mention being loaded down with spy devices and driver interference systems. People are even pulling older cars out of junkyards and rebuilding them, because there is nothing acceptable in the new car market. You couldn't GIVE me a new car, even a gas powered one.

    The bigger issue is that there has to be enough capacity in the electric grid for everyone to charge their car and there are now times when fast chargers can't fast charge so your 20minute 300kw fast charger only charge at 40kw so that 20minute charge to 80% now takes an hour and half.

    Yesterday, I saw a Tesla M3 with minor dents on multiple body panels. Beater EVs are out there. Will a how-to develop to self repair EVs? I am not aware of any mechanics shop that specializes in EVs. Thats the "infrastucture" that is missing.

    The big three auto makers could do a lot better at making EV cars and trucks, but they have been paid by the oil industry for decades to stay away from EV’s and now they’re trying to catch up with Tesla and failing miserably. Batteries will continue to get better and cheaper and solar power will continue to grow. I’d love to have a Ford Lightning truck but not until they fix their software and lower the price by at least one third to one half. There’s no reason why they should cost so much to make.

    It was crazy to focus on pick ups. What was needed was cheap commuter vehicles that people could use as second car/run about. Cut the pollution in cities and concentrate the charging network. After that the emphasis could have shifted to general purpose/rural vehicles. The hype just exceeded the current battery capability and charging network. I would envisage that current battery technology will be obsoleted in 5 years. So many better options are in the pipeline.

    for me it looks a bit like this. 43 km to work so that makes it 86 km round trip, if the car only gets 150 km range i have to charge it every day.
    compare that to say a Toyota Aygo, it drives 20~ km/l with a 35 litre fuel tank, so refuel 1 a week.
    not to mention price of the car to start with
