Oiled pine will continue to darken over the years, becoming more orange or yellow. If you like how the pine looks now, use a stain with a sheer hint of white in it.
You're the first person I've ever seen do a skim coat on new drywall. I've done a lot of drywall in US and Canada and never seen it done. The only time was to fix imperfections in old homes with plaster and lathe walls. What you're doing is called rendering in Europe. It seems your method is faster than theirs. Excellent job!
It’s fairly compulsory in the U.K. (but don’t ask me why John)..
The Petherick's channel on their chateau and convent showed a lot of the skim coats or rendering on their walls. I love watching them work!

Cannot wait until the cabin is moved into place and done both of you are workaholics 😊❤
My husband and I did a lot of building in the southeastern United States in the 60&70’s. We quite regularly did skim coat on the walls.
You know what I like about your channel? You all are so down to earth and totally enjoyable and not fake. The container camper is looking so good.
We just had a kitchen reno done and I asked my contractor about the skim coat and he looked at me like I had three heads. You really do some seriously top tier work Spencer!
I agree with you. Every time he does those little details I know my contractor I am paying would never🤣 Perks of doing it yourself
We removed popcorn ceiling and instead of texture we chose to do skim coating and it turned out amazing. Will do that moving forward. I like the look better than texture
Skim coat for a container " home " is just a stretcher for content, no need if you know how to do drywall properly
@@col2560well according to others that have done drywall for years say otherwise. Apparently, they do the skim coat in Europe. Knowing Spencer, he does it because hes a perfectionist not to stretch out content. Ive been watching for years, with a new baby i hardly doubt thats what it is. Hes builing his home for his family, for their babies and wants to make sure everything is perfect.
@@yolandawilson9852
Have you ever noticed how little they do in 7 days ?
It's just a money grab
my experience with putting oil on unfinished pine is that it will turn orange, gold over time, so you may want to consider that. It won't stay the same as what it is new with a few oil coats on it
I absolutely love seeing the kids playing outside & using their imagination, & not stuck indoors playing on gaming devices.
❤ the Mommy & Sissy hugs.
I'm starting to see kids outside more and more. I'm so glad. Maybe the devices are getting boring.
@@soniasias6226We can only hope 👍
Kenzie, you look AMAZING! Its hard to believe that you just had a baby.
I came here to post this. Amazing work, Guys!
I've turned my 20 year old daughter onto your channel. You seem to be an inspiration. ✌️
Several more layers of awesome added! FWIW, I think you have dispelled any ideas about how "simple" it is to convert a container to a finished home- with style, grace and patience; all the qualities of enduring marriages. Can't wait to see it up on the mountain! Wishing all five of your tremendous tomorrow!
Every time the container gets more stuff done in it. Looks good
Can you please let us know where IO is or what has happened to him? Thanks
Can't wait to see what it looks like when you are done ❤.
Spencer and Kenzie make beautiful babies💜💜💜 room for one more handsome boy!!!!1🙏🙏🙏💜💜💜
Just a cautionary note, the pine is gonna turn orange over time due to exposure to sunlight. I might suggest a stain that will neutralize that, maybe with grey or taupe tones.
You can stain your wood white. When you wipe it off, all the grain is still there, lightened and muted. Then spray sealer /shellack to seal it. Look at DIYfferent's ceilings to see what they did. Either way will be great I'm sure!
I've been searching for how to do a skim coat, and HERE YOU ARE!!! Thank you for showing me exactly what/how to do it!!! You guys keep rockin' it!!! 🥰🥰
Hahaha the baby crying right when you said she looked like Spencer is hilarious.Awww bear is getting to be an old man
Was funny🤣😂
What happened to the little dog???
The child was born with perfect comedic timing!
@richardw5375 I've seen people asking for it before. I gu ess it passed away or something, but it seems like they don't want to talk about it. It hasn't been on the videos for a long time.
@@nancypatricio9972I had been wandering as well. Thanks for the explanation.
I’m so panicked about the moving of the cabin after you guys have done so much work. Praying for no mishaps!
Your container home is looking great! Spencer should be proud of the work that he’s done. The baby is so sweet but I didn’t see Cam, just Beau! Moving the container should be a real challenge! Looking forward to watching you guys as you continue your journey! My favorite RUclips channel and family!
You can water down normal paint 50:50 as the first coat. The peeling happens because the plaster sucks all the moisture out of the paint so you need to give it a good drink first. Then you can do normal coats of paint afterwards. Container is really coming to life now! Your plastering is really neat Spencer!
Where did the other dog go? I see bear but where is IO?
Does anyone else get a little sad when you hear the ending music start to play? I love their videos soooo much! =)
I really dislike the ending song, I seriously get a very depressed feeling😢 I can't place the reason for it though.
I love the ending song.
Getting sad every time I hear it.
Want these videos go on forever!
You do one of the best skim coats I've ever seen. I was wondering about that roller technique, but now I realize that you waste MUCH less much by applying it that way. I love that we can be entertained AND informed by watching your videos, and you're just doin' you. Good stuff!! Also, the baby is so precious and I knew that sister was going to kiss her when she asked to hug her. Children are such a joyous gift!! I see little man sneakin' in there, too with a little drive. Such an adorable family. Love seeing people tackling things together and making progress. Way to go you guys!! Definitely living your lives "uncontained." ;)
Do you guys still have two dogs, I always just see one .🐾🐾
Same. I was wondering about that too.
I’m guessing there was a mishap, and it may be too painful for them to discuss at the moment.
They never said what happened to IO
Beautiful lighting of sky scenery~! Precious baby and adorable big sister and brother! Good Luck with decisions on the cabin, a big project.! Excited to see it on the mountain with all your ideas to add to it💚
So my wife and I have been following you guys since the beginning. You take us on a journey every week However you no long mention IO (little blue heeler). Obviously something has happened to him but some of us would like you to address the situation.
We have lost 3 of our dogs over the last 30 years and it’s not easy to talk about it but talking helps ease the pain of their absence.Trust me.❤❤
Awwwww, where is IO? ❤🐶 He's been gone for ages, is he ok? Always nice to see handsome Bear...but where is little IO?? Please update that hes ok 🙏🐶
I have asked so many times for months now but never get an answer. It would be nice if they had the decency to let their viewers know what's going on because of course we're all on board with everything that they do and we've become attached to what they have.
No doubt many many others would be wondering what's happened to the dog?
@@Jentalks380 IO, I have also asked, nothing
I looked ad the last time to see IO in a video was just after they got back from the Mountain area they are going to have the cabin moved. No video has IO in it after that, and that was in Jan. losing a dog, even a young one like IO, happens. I know they very focused on a ton of content and the new baby, so at some point we get told what's up.
The cabin is looking so beautiful, the kids are so sweet!
You guys continue to amaze in what you have been able to accomplish!
On raw Sheetrock an individual primer is always best for good adhesion. Note, your primer can also be tinted to a shade of the topcoat to insure total color coverage!
Bless you for this comment. Paint & Primer in 1 is not what people think it is.🤦🏾♀️
After your done we need a complete house tour
I love the look of the cabin you are chugging along beautifully.
What happened to the other dog? Any one know?
IO has been missing for several episodes, my wife and I always look at the floor and landscape shots for him but no sightings. I really with they would address what happened to him.
he's been missing longer than 7 videos. i think the last time he was seen was when the whole family was in the mountains. I think something happened to him up there. I remember people commented in their videos they weren't careful enough around the bears up there. I dont think it would hurt of they just said he's no longer here and we dont want to talk about it instead of ignoring it and ignoring all the comments about IO. He was in every video up untill then its just weird to not say something about it.
I agree. Would like to know. I pray his absence isn't due to bears etc. 🥹
Hi Spencer and family good progress with the container home. Beautiful new baby, 10 daye old already. Good to see Bear but havnt seen your other dog for ages is he ok. Take care.😊😊
This is probably my top #1 channel on U-Tube. Day 1 follower. 0 missed episodes. I have never seen them answer a question, have a post longer then 27 min or tell us where did the other dog go. We r alone Commenters. Our own little world inside theirs. 13 to 18 min's at a time if we r lucky before the deeded tune come on in the background.
I think they decided from the beginning not to comment in the comment section. That can take a lot of time away from your children and husband. She already has enough on her plate with editing the videos, taking care of the children.
Great timing for this refresher video, I am getting ready to skim coat a bathroom in our house. I was trying to decide how I should do it. I really wish I could just borrow Spenser for a couple days :)
e wood panelling stains, the semi gloss finish will be easier to clean if the kids create a mess on it with food, crayons etc, The matt would be harder to clean
Another beautiful baby. I'm 72 years old and was never blessed with a child. I have really enjoyed watching yours grow. Thank you for sharing your videos with us.
Hi guys. I was looking at the plan for the cabin utility room and my suggestions are to use pieces of container cutting you already have to build it.
Tung Oil (the real thing) is just a drying oil. Danish Oil is a combination of oil, varnish and a reducer. Neither are "stains".
Oh wow! You had the baby. God's blessings on your family 🎉❤😊
Her name is Scout.
Hope you read this. For the walls in moving the trailer, get some thick plywood sheets butted upon the walls and use some 2X4s to brace the walls (from wall to Wall) so that you can minimize the damage from moving the trailer. It properly will not completely save all the walls, but at least most of them will be spared. Your hard work is excellent.
I think they are expecting quite a lot of transit damage built have saved thousands by doing 90% of the heavy construction on their home site prior to going into the bush.
When you decide to move the Container, dont hire a Cranetoo expensive, Hire a Long based Unit with a Hiab on the back, it will lift the container on to its bed then drive to youre new place and put it where you want it, Whereas with a Crane, you need a Crane and a lorry with a long bed,
A side loader would make more sense and would put less stress on the container.
That’s a BIG HIAB. 40’ container finished inside is around 20 thousand pounds-ish. Might find one from a large materials supplier, but a 40’ deck with a 20-ton HIAB is not on every rental lot. I agree that a crane is a multi-pronged hassle. Might have trouble getting a HIAB operator willing to take responsibility for such a large load in one lift.
Getting close to the mountain move? It’s looking good!
Your little cabin is looking fantastic, you both did a really nice job. The skin coat just tops it up for that professional look. Good video guys!! 👍👍❤️❤️🇨🇦
I don't think I've clicked on so fast ever. You have a very beautiful family. Thank you for sharing and GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
I’ve watched every video, and have never heard you say what happened to your other dog.
Love your channel, been following you for few years, keep it up, and greeting from Australia
Excellent work! The cabin is coming along beautifully 😊
I've been looking for instructions on how to make a skim coat, and I've found you! I appreciate you exactly explaining what to do and how to do it! You guys are still doing awesome!
Having been a hanger & finisher since 1978, and working on very expensive mansions in LA area, you unconventional methods were all made excellent by your skim coating. I was impressed with your improved skills with that 12” knife. Very smart the way you used the light. Great job!
Love watching your progress in build of your ‘cabin’. Thoughtfully, neatly done!
Wow the cabin is coming along nicely. Good Job!
Hope you double checked the container roof for severe roof damage and rust. If the roof leaks not easy to spot the problem area
I can’t imagine how busy you are with a new baby, your other two children, and this build. I love this channel and love when I get a notification of a new video. Although I and many of us might want more videos I surely understand how busy all of you must be… you need your personal life, and time with your kids and your family, we surely don’t need to see everything you do in your life. You keep doing what you’re doing and we will be here waiting for all the updates and news, God bless you all! 💞
I think you guys should use a darker stain, rather than an oil. It would still show some of the grain, but would go better with the dark cabinets...
I lime wash my pine then varnish it., absolutely love it.
Wow you two are amazing inspirational just such a beautiful family ❤❤❤❤❤🇦🇺🇦🇺💙💙👍🥰🥰🥰
You guys please never lose your banter / wit...it makes life more enjoyable and keeps relationships burning.
There is a primer sealer for new drywall must be applied before any paint
I can only repeat myself here. You are my favorite RUclips family and I look forward to every single update that you share with us. God bless you.
Hey guys looking great. For the wood opposed to oiling check out scorching the wood with a torch.
The last room "FOR NOW" those looks at 10:15 says it all 😅
They must have gotten rid of IO for some reason. If something bad had happened to him they probably would have said something about it on video
Agreed, I just wish they would mention what happened even if it is sorrowful. The not knowing is taking away from my family's enjoyment of the series.
@@happybluedogmaybe it’s just hard for them to say what happened. Let it be.
I would white wash the pine.
The "Boxcar" is coming along nicely (it reminds me of Train Cargo). Also, it's so lovely to see your Family growing. I've been a subscriber since before you had your first little girl...
I, like many others, eagerly await seeing the cabin place in the final destination. I'm sure you'll love it better than the camper trailer.
1 question.... Have you considered putting security bars over the windows to prevent bears entering your home in the mountains? I would be concerned about the bears breaking in and damaging my home and possibly family.
I think those windows are the correct (bear proof) building code already? Bars would look mighty ugly I think. (Have you lived through that scenario?)🤔
????what??? I’ve lived in grizzly country my whole life, we have bears wander through the yard and have never heard of a bear breaking into a house??
@grandenauto3214
Do a Google search and you will see many articles on bears breaking into homes and cabins. Glad you haven't experienced this event. Blessings and Shalom Shalom.
Using a high adhesion primer, will keep any paint, down. Bullseye or Benjamin Moore Fresh Start are common ones.
When I was a teenager, we moved into a new tract house, and all the inside walls were smooth plaster. No moldings. I loved it. Mid Century Modern, but we didn't know. All this to say I love your smooth walls, modern look.
Oh, Spencer, you are so meticulous with the drywall! I pray that it will survive the trip without cracking. Having done drywalling for years you made the right decision to go with the drywall primer. The mountain cabin is really coming along. Great job! 👍
The walls look great Spencer !
I don't know if stain is like paint in this regard... but I know we always went with semi-gloss with young kids because it's easier to wipe clean.
I like Spencer's 'think outside the box' t-shirt.

I wonder about the little dog, it worries me so much i cant enjoy the watching the show 😮
This video was especially good for me to see this morning. I had a dream last night where I was in deep grief, and woke up with tears in my eyes. This video dried my tears and re-started my day! ❤
That skim coat looked great! Didn’t you do three coats of mud in the house? Just a vague memory. Anyway, it turned out awesome! I’m really praying for no cracks in the walls or the windows when you move it, which must be coming soon? 53 feet? I have to admit you probably wouldn’t have had to add the shed. Oh well, hind sight is 20/20! C’est la vie! It’s looking so good! So are all the kids and mommy & daddy. You must be getting good sleep? Love from Oregon ♥️ Jess
You both work so hard it makes me tired just watching!!
Absolutely exhausted by the time they are finished lol
We missed you guys!
A really gorgeous, adorable baby, as are the other two. I notice you call the stuff on the walls, "mud". In the UK we call it "plaster". Mud is what plants grow in. An interesting difference. You are both working so hard and look so good.
.
We call it "mud" in the U.S., and we also call wet dirt mud. 😊
Hi guys, great video again absolutely love watching, big hello from the UK, where's the 2 dogs only see Bear ,just wondering. Keep up the great work
whatever color you decide, make it a light color as the cabin is VERY small. lighter just makes the space look bigger.
Looking Good can't wait to see the finished job and how it fairs during transportation
My wife and i can always tell when y'all are a a little sleep deprived lol. Love how goofy you both get. We also are enjoying your drywall progress as we are at the same stage of our house remodel.
Are you hoping to finish the cabin this summer so you can move it to your mountain property?
Textured plaster is for the installers advantage… covers imperfections and is quicker…. For the owner and the rest of the life of the finish its just a pain to touch in, clean and paint. Just spend the time to get the clean, smooth finish right 👍
Let me say I have been a fan for a long time. I’ve watch you build the first house and as a retired building official I think you have done a fantastic job boathouse of you.
Love watching you guys. So refreshing following a family that has morals and truly family oriented. Thanks for no excess cursing also. God bless your family.
What ended up happening with your pond. Did the aeration change the composition a lot?
I use tung oil on my keepsake boxes followed by a couple of coats of poly.
God Bless New baby where is your other dog I have not seen him
I’m thinking it’s going to be pretty heavy so I hope their site approach is up to the task. I guess if a full semi is around 40 tons this cabin will weigh at least half that with all the fittings completed?. (I’m hoping they will do a technical explanation video before the actual journey day.)
I just moved a seacan full of equipment up a mountain on a small two track trail without any problems… that can is light… no issues.
❤
You can get a hi-gloss furniture finish with tongue oil. It takes a lot of coats and steel wool between coats.
Est quedando hermoso y felicidades y bendiciones por la nueva integrante dn la familia
Go with the oil that provides the best UV protection!
Spencer, what you have done is looking so good, the primer should make the drywall less absorbent, so the paint should go on easier. Mackenzie you are looking good after giving birth, and the baby is also looking good. Love hearing the children in the background.
Love from Mike. ❤
The touque oil is the hardener in varnish. You can always add another coat. Without roughing it up. Plus u can put it on with your bare hands.
Oh baby is beautiful just like your other kids....... mama your looking good to❤❤❤heart
Wow what a difference the paint makes. I admire your work ethic. Can’t wait to see the next episode of Life Uncontained. 😊😊
you had the issues on your hose of paint peeling. Get Zinser Bulls Eye primer WATER BASED. That stuff works great.
