  • Sony is one of the most iconic electronics companies of all time. From the Walkman to their modern TVs, Sony has been one of the longest-living electronics companies in the world, but more recently, Sony hasn’t been doing all that well. You see, ever since the turn of the decade, Sony has been slowly losing industry after industry, and during the worst of it, they were actually posting losses for several years. Much of this was due to stiff competition in all of their core industries from players like Apple, Samsung, and LG. But, much of this was also due to questionable leadership that didn’t quite understand the value proposition of Sony. Despite all these headwinds though, it seems that Sony has actually started to make a turnaround. They’re by no means close to their peak but they are in a sustainable profitable position which is a lot better than many of their Japanese peers. This video explains the rise and fall of Sony and what happened to Sony.

Sony is killing it in the Camera industry. I am a professional photographer who shoots Canon but nearly everyone I know in the industry is on Sony it is considering switching to them. I know it’s not a huge market compared to TV, mobile or gaming but it is definitely a strength for them right now.

Sony has some of the best optics in the industry even their semi-pro mirrorless cameras are starting to eat into canon and nikons business. Also, he points out samsung being number one in the tv industry but that industry is now extremely low margin and samsung is basically the main panel maker which every brand slaps their logo on including Sony.

Lets not forget anime. At the end of last year Sony finished up buying up the majority of anime streaming sites in the west paying many billions each for sites like Crunchyroll, Funimation, VRV, Anime Lab, Madman just to name a few. Add that that the money they have invested in it in Japan it'sself & they are now the most influential anime company in the world & even own percent share in all their competitor in China as well. While it might not sound like it but anime is huge at the the moment with paid subscription looking more like Netflix that an anime only site. I'm in my late 50's & love anime the variety & types of things long forgotten in new woke world can still be found in anime stories that I find are as good as anything Hollywood has to offer. The Japenease pump it out like it's a mass production line, producing more than 300 new titles every year with at least a dozen episodes for each title & are now dubbing them in up to 10 different languages to boot. All I'm saying is Sony is far from dead & have unfathomable amounts of capital on hand & are expanding into many upcoming area's that are not on most peoples watch list. Their wiki page lists of only a small fraction of what they own but it's still a huge list on it's own & contains many of the who's who of companies of the world. AKA: Sony's doing pretty darn well if you ask me.

What is Sony doing better than the big names like Canon/Nikon in the pro-camera industry?

  • @agirlmagazine

"In 2021, Sony was the top-ranked photography company in the world with $8.44 billion in revenue. Canon was second with $5.11 billion, and Fujifilm was third with $1.71 billion. "
In fact Sony's dominance chased Samsung out of this market. In 2014 Samsung introduced the NX1, which was years ahead of the competition at the time. Just about a year later, Samsung exited the digital camera market completely. Sony's profits in this area show that you can make money from it. Sony concentrates on making equipment that costs thousands and tens of thousands of dollars for professionals, industry, broadcast, and content creator markets all over the planet. There was a simular shift with the in-home VCR market. Once it became a commodity like TVs are today, Sony left it and went for supplying the higher margin, higher profit, higher technology broadcast and professional technology product sector. I was shocked when I was watching this video because you actually showed one of Sony's most popular and profitable cameras in your video montage while you were saying at the same time that Sony has lost that market. I read also in the comment section that you said that making parts such as image sensors proves your point but on the other hand all TSMC does is "make parts". When the parts that you make (because Sony image sensors are used in the iPhone) are used in hundreds of millions of products all over the planet and are considered to be the best on the planet, I can't call that a failure. There is a difference between commodity parts such as home TFT screens and image sensors and digital imaging processors which are highly advanced technologies that you may not see on the store shelves of a local electronic store in the form that you are used to thinking is a symbol of success.

This makes sense. I grew up recognizing Sony as a quality manufacturer, and, especially by the early 2000s, the rest of them as junk. A TV should last AT LEAST twenty years, but consumers don't bat an eye at their LG or Samsung TV pooping out after 3-4 years. My own Sony TV has ten years behind it now and continues to work as well as the day I bought it. I hope Sony does not stray from the philosophy of building high quality long lasting products.

In the last 20 years display tech has changed blazingly fast. Consumers don't care about really cheap LCD tvs pooping out after 3-4 years because they are so cheap and are constantly getting much better.

    • @tempest411

@@JakubWasikiewiczNo, I have a 10-11 year old LCD TV, and it works as good as new. I couldn't ask for a better picture. But the difference between each in terms of picture quality is similar. My favorite brand was SONY during the 80’s to late 90’s. Innovative and quality wise were top notch and were built to last. Then most electronic gadgets that I bought around 00’s onward, like camcorders, CD/DVD/Bluray/4K players, PS, mobile phones, wireless headphones, computers, 4K TV, and so on didn’t last as long as before. I think the average lifespan of each SONY product is about 5 years nowadays, whether it was made in China, SEA nations or Japan. My mobile phone lasted a month before sending back for repair (Twice), and the remaining SONY products that I have and still can be considered working not as perfect condition are my 75” 4K TV (reception of regular TV channel no longer functioning, but still good at watching Netflix), 2 4K players (both sometimes hanged half way while playing 4K discs but no such issue with Blu-ray Discs. Again I don’t have such issue with my Cambridge 4K player), and PS4. Nowadays, I still check out new SONY products, but it is no longer my top brand. Maybe “build-to-last” no longer a profitable business model like some new Japanese cars.

I disagree in regard with video games, in my opinion Sony is becoming stagnant with the ps5: their games are becoming boring imitations of the last of us and Nintendo have wiped out Sony from the Japanese market, their game budgets are becoming ridiculously high and the returns are very little to the point Nintendo is the one that has the highest net profits of the big three.
Also Sony all these past years have become complacent with just buying temporary exclusivity deals to hold their dominance, instead of building stable brands and characters, and now they’re suffering, they lose call of duty, Bethesda products, etc.

People who are buying a switch are not gonna buy a ps5, they're not the same category. Who cares what the japanese are doing, as far as I'm concerned, there are already a lot of JRPGs for the ps5. All that variety is gone and all we have now are these overrated wannabe movies, I used to have a PlayStation since the ps one in 1996 but I jumped ship because of this trend.
And it’s not about Sony has to dominate the entire console exclusive, it’s more about that they’re having noticeable problems, layoffs, etc. that’s why they have a new CEO that’s changing the way they’re making new games, the budgets are becoming ridiculous, the bungie buyout it’s a disaster because they have no idea what to do with them.

They even deliberately make items that will start giving problems within a year or so. Everyone is forced on rolling out new version of the same item with minimal improvements within a year. To amplify this effect, the consumer habit also have changed, now even people don't want to use the same item for more than a year, they have the urge to change the models for social acceptance. My parents used to have a Sony TV that lasted for more than 20 years, without any degradation of the quality, and we were quite happy with that and people too, used to value items with high quality and durability. Microsoft failed at phones and MP3 players (back in the day), LG failed at phones, Samsung's fridges are in a massive class action, Sony doesn't even make their own panels for TVs anymore but they make award winning chipsets for TVs. Companies fail and lose money all the time especially when they are willing to take risks like Sony has. Korean companies have just done better at making products cheaper and selling at volumes Sony and others cannot. It's all just a cycle, the tech sector is a cruel mistress. 🤷

I remember the Sony brand's dominance in the 90s and in 2006 when I used to work at a consumer electronics store. People don't ask much about Sony TVs and their features, they just buy them outright. Then some time in the 2010s, people buy or prefer Samsung or LG TVs. Even the Chinese brand TCL is beating Sony. Their proprietary formats like the Memory Stick and M2 card, despite being used for the Sony Ericsson brand and PSP were beaten by SD cards and micro SD. Nowadays, it's pretty much only the Playstation and their camera sensor business that keeps them alive. And it's not guaranteed they'll be on top of those segments in the next decade.

There’s a lot of comments about Sony doing great because of their cameras, but Sony used to be like a high end Yamaha…like they just made EVERYTHING (except, I think, Sony didn’t mess with motorized vehicles or musical instruments).
And whatever the product was, you got the Sony one if you had the extra cash because the brand was ubiquitous with being of higher quality.
The MDR-7506 headphones are still the best for the price, but if you told a Sony executive 25 years ago that the company would be doing great because of their video game console and their cameras, that executive would begin shitting bricks.

Yeah Sony is def doing great with cameras, but I guess I was looking at it from a more holistic perspective. Back in the day, great portable audio meant Sony. Great TVs meant Sony. Great home entertainment systems meant Sony, etc. It was akin to what Samsung or Apple is today. This, however, is no longer the case for Sony aside from the PlayStation.

The Alpha range of Cameras I liked but the camera shutters would stop @ 200,000 clicks and finding a service centre to service them was a difficult thing.
All in all though I like Sony and still have many SONY products to this day, so they do last, I also like Technics and Denon, but as you say Samsung is the king in my household now.

The main issue like you said is the paranoia of moving into new technology, the PlayStation brand used to be the ultimate experience for me, I'm proud to live through the Ps2 era also had the ps1. these two consoles were experience behemoth, then there was the ps3, even tho they struggled with the ps3 interim of prices at the end they really driven it up via games like COD, LOF, Uncharted, GT etc, then was the ps4 it was okay but yea I felt a gradual drop in the gameplay experience, and now the PS5 don't know why they wouldn't try to bring out new games rather than developing the existing games and remastering games again that was released for the ps5 such as LOF. I guess its the bad management.

  • @Mr-Clark
    @Mr-Clark 8 дней назад

Sony dropped the ball on taking on the iPod. I was well aware of that time period.
During that time, storage size was everything during the mp3 player era. Memory chip on mp3 players were expensive. The more music you wanted, you needed more space. Sony did have something that could have rivaled the industry but chose not to. That was Mini Disc.
Problem was Sony insisted on using their own compression format instead of the industry standard of mp3. Instead of allowing mini disc players to use a standard mp3 format, they used atrac. During a time period of expensive home computer storage, users had to have 2 versions of their music files on hand. If you had 1,000 mp3s, you will have to encode them to 1,000 atrac files. Thus eating up disk space. Not only that but your computer had to encode them which took a good amount of time.
Had Sony just allowed net md to be used as conventional storage, it would have sold far better than a locked proprietary atrac format. If your iPod or mp3 player filled up, you had to delete songs to accomodate new songs you have. If your minidisc was full, you simply buy a new disc and keep the other one in your pocket.
Sony's obsession with their closed proprietary format signaled their own death.

As I understand, Sony changed from an electronics to a media company. And as a media company, they started getting into proprietary electronics media formats(Memory sticks, mini discs, etc) and DRM and all that crap. I was a fan of Sony gear, and got a F707 camera, which had a memory stick as storage. Sony was telling the world higher capacity cards were coming and yet it got stuck at 128MB in size. And some time later they dropped it when they realised that the world has moved to open standards such as CF or SD cards.
I considered the camera as a waste since I can't shoot more then a few photos before having to change my storage card every time (compared to my friends using Canon and other brands with SD and CF cards with 512mb or even 1GB capacity). Nice camera, crapped on by the stupid decision by Sony to put a proprietary memory stick as it's storage.
Didn't help that they got into the DRM rootkit scandal a few years later.
Never bought anything from Sony since the F707 around the year 2001. They have to decide if they are a media or electronics company before I relook the brand again.

I have a Sony phone (the Xperia 1 IV to be specific). The phone is so excellent that I'm genuinely sad that the Xperia line doesn't get more recognition. Even the latest iteration, the Xperia 1 V, still has a headphone jack. That alone deserves to be a front-page feature.
That's what I love about the Xperia line. Sure, they may be a tiny fragment of a subset of the market, but because Sony's money comes from other branches of business like their DSLR cameras and their media (thanks to owning both Crunchyroll and Funimation), they have the ability to tell their engineers to "just have fun with it. Design something you'd want." And that level of freedom that the engineers have is part of what makes their phones so special. They're not designed by 1-upping the competition, they're designed by taking the best they can do and putting that in their own products.

One reason why Sony has only 1% market share in mobile is they do not sell in phone shops. I asked a seller why no more Sony phones are on display, he said they didn't want to agree to the prices and margins from the Mobile provider companies. Sony Mobile phones are some of the best advanced in the world. Sony build a phone around a camera. The Sony Vaios's where so far ahead of it's time that people simply didn't know what todo with it. Vaio stands for Video Audio Input Output. Every Sony device was equipped with a I-link connector (Sony brand). You could transfer files super fast from your camera to the lap-Top and each lap-Top came with a basic Video editing software. They where faster as USB at the time. Sony is still the King when it comes to Video and Film cameras. A Bravia TV is still the Top of the range from my point of view. I still use my Sony MD, best sound ever for portable devices.

I hear ya. I grew up my dad’s largest client was Japnese. He would bring me something SONY actually made in Japan. I would brign to school to show off. I had Vaio laptop 💻 I liked it so much, d best was screen. But decade later quick search their most premium Screen was--Made by SHARP displays. Not SONY.
At benining of LED tvs in 2010-2012 100% 💯 SONY Leds from entry to premium Bravia flagship. Were Mass ordered from SHARP Tv, slap SONO logos on it. Like they later started to make inferior LED riding the SHARP premium wave. Ppl buy it live in placebo.
They ahve never been best in tvs. Since 2010s. Ppl have had $5000 SHARP tvs think SONY is scam. My family did. Ppl kept comign to my house 3-4 yr in a row. Like :” why is MY DAD’s $2800 60” SONY look like e$800 comparing to yours?? He did 1 month research, n its on sale price its not cheap. But its the latest technology, yours is 2 yr old! Why is yours so clear. HOW??”
I honestly did now know how to answer that. It was strange.
Then the same ppl came back 3 yr in a row like”seriously all my uncles , cousisn, they all got upgraded to high end SONY. They dont buy cheap. Yours look SO MUCH more clear, theirs so mushy!! Why?? Your tv so old now. I seriously have compared to everyone’s new tV !” Its their reaction made me realize “wow like wtf is SONY tv “ then i started going back to store to check 4 yrs after i got my tv. …they looked Worse than my tv thats from 4-5 yr earlier. I am talkking about SONY flagship. 😮
NO joke 2013 Sharp Aquos Quatrum - panel flagship had 10 X dynamic contrast ratio of SONY Bravia flagship. IT had 50% MORE color capacity than Sony Bravia. N high color Density on top of Color capacity. The visual differnce GAP is like (X95L/ QD-OLED ) to a like X85L. 😮😮😮
I cant explain unless u see the difference, u wont be as confused as I was cuz NOT once i was able to answer why SONY tvs so like flat also Sever blue tined.

Thats prob why they are not selling. In marketing the NEED cant not be forced upon ppl . In the early 2000s Movies, Video GAme were dh MAIN entertainment options for young ppl. Their UPSCaling is only best for OLD uncle DVD n Blue Ray. I have never watched 1 blue ray anyting in my life. Like cant ask married couple with 2 kids 1 dog to buy supped up Sports coup when they need premium Family car.
SONY focus too much in Gamming n Movie. Most ppl play Game all day are living home parents basement. If they are in persue of Dr. Law, CPA certficicate, etc THEY HAVE NO time to like sleep never mind the dating life n other social connections. Even our Nerdy Frriends are invited to parties WEEKLY in outing years. They sill come out every week. UNLESS the 4-8% ppl anti social they spend weeks years weekends playing video game all weekend Fri Sat Sun. Most ppl at those age gap get Dopamine rush gonig out than sit home watching movie.
Selling a feature that the ppl with Money dont need, its a huge Miss. its like Selling the MOST premium Nisan 390Z or Mecedes coup to college students , they cant afford even tho THATs the group want light race car show off .
No joke most of my friends in school days Monday to Thursday Grinding school, weekend out Partying, then Sunday study. Rinse n repeat, then when go to work force, even get busier. NO one has time to play endless video game. When they are KIDS they play video game . But when ppl settle down they get mortage , car loan to pay. They really do no have time to watch 3hr/movie even once a week or play any video game.
MOST ppl want 75” -100” tv they have huge house with kids. They want Bright over all best tv. Like SONY’s even 2024 right now : x90L. 65” --88 local dimming zone. So pathetic. Its like sever blooming. On top its 😮MATTED fine grain matte screen, super frosty pale reflective any time lights on or day time if watch dark show. Its an OVER ALL -DECENT - at best . Its like Selling AUDI price CAR with VW jetta type of experience. Jetta is decent but like ppl get burned thinking where is the “wow”. Cuz if u play a DARK video game on x90L day time . If with like glass wall condo or lots window. Forget about it.
But if go up a range to go to SONY X93L x95L glossier . It has horrible rainbow 🌈 smear cause image blur, due to the Anti reflective layer inside of screen. But MOST RUclipsrs are PAID off , they do NOT show u that in the review. Ppl only “finding out” at home first time turning it on.😮
Hisense U8N just came out this week --65”. 2000 local dimming zone, incky black. Yeah 2000 vs Sony 88. Superior color tone mapping. Ppl in my household think SONY is inferior tv false marketing for decade. Sony just A okay , ppl buy it lives in Placebo like when they buy BMW X3 everything is like Honda Civic experience .
