Even granting the Heise call was correct, the reffing overall was pretty atrocious all game. A lot of blatant no calls being missed while small ticky tack calls were called.
Yeah, I think this is why Minnesota fans were so upset. The calling up to that point had been atrociously bad, letting all kinds of fouls go with impunity, so when the refs actually decided to do their jobs only when it was for a game winner was such an affront. Minnesota got that cup decisively tonight though. Stinks it wasn't at home, but it's coming back to where it belongs. :)
as a female hockey player from minnesota (who lives in new york and hates boston), sitting through five periods, a called back goal, celebrating a cup win, losing that win, and losing the game... good god. the reffing all game was AWFUL (though i do agree that the last goal was rightfully called back).
A better call from the ref would have been to immediately waive off the goal for interference and then go to review to overturn if necessary, but shrug, refereeing is hard and making judgement calls in real time is challenging.
It's honestly hard to say cause from where the ref is standing, they would clearly see the stick directly up against the player, whereas we can clearly see in replay that it had nothing to do with her going down. So I can see why they could've thought it she was taken down, which would've let the goal stand.

The whole game was one sequence after another of "how did they NOT call that?" followed by "wait... THAT'S a penalty now?!?" In a sick way, it was almost perfect to have the game end the way it did
I was at this game and as brutal as this moment was, it was the correct call. I just wish the NHL and PWHL put a time limit on reviews. It's either conclusive or it's not, after a few minutes if they're unsure they should just go with the call on the ice.

Unfortunately it was the right call, however the refs were letting Boston get away with holding, tackling, and other really major penalties all night. It was upsetting that when they finally decided to make a call it was on this instead. It felt very pointed all night that they were favoring dismissing calls against Boston.
The PWHL has gotten so many little details right. Case in point: the sponsor logo being on the shoulder rather than the front. Sticking it next to the crest looks tacky, forced, and awkward when you have a captaincy letter and a special occasion patch to also fight for jersey space. Sticking it on the shoulder like that I think makes it more visible and keeps the front of the sweater so much cleaner.
The funny but not funny thing is that me and my siblings were talking about this exact situation in the middle of the first OT. I guess we kind of cursed the hole thing. I think Boston wins now cus I don’t know how you get back in the right mindset after that gut punch.
I don't know, looking at the replay I can't help but wonder if the reason the Minnesota player fell was because of the "slash" by the Boston defender as she was trying to skate around said defender. You see that happen in the NHL, AHL, CHL, even in the IIHF international tournaments, where the offensive player skates around the defender, receives a tap or shove, and loses their balance before sliding into the goaltender. Now I won't argue the call, I think they had to call no goal on the play, especially if the Minnesota player was in the midst of falling by herself. But if it was the "slash" that caused her to fall, then there probably should have been a penalty against Boston. Now watch the exact same thing happen in Game 5 in Boston, but the teams switch places (Boston thinks they scored the winner, it gets called back, Minnesota scores the one that counts to win it all).
The same happened few years ago at women’s world championships final at overtime. After celebrations, goal was disallowed and penalty was called for gollie interference. And of course, the other team won at the end of the day
It's brutal and has happened before, women's worlds a few years ago Finland was against either one of the north american teams in the finals and Finland scored to celebrate their first title in womens history but it was called back for goalie interference and then they got scored on! Only difference is that in that case it was an awful mistake by the refs...
I do like the ref cams though. We will never get post game interviews with refs. So this would be awesome to have in the NHL to see from their POV to maybe rationalize their calls
Legitimately NO WAY that's not interference. Doesn't matter if the player meant to collide with the tender, the collision meant there was absolutely no chance to even try making the save.
I was freaking amazed at the claw back and Boston takes it back, should be a great game back in Bean Town. This just adds to the element of being a great final game, wow PWHL is packing punch for massive views for this final.
Right call, heartbreak for MIN who have played so well since the 3rd game of the TOR series. Glad to see the first PWHL Final go to game 5 of 5 though. The hockey may not yet be as good as the boys, but *all* of the women of the PWHL have hearts of champions.
Because it was the right call to waive the goal off. It was clear Heise’s own momentum took her into Frankel making it not possible for her to play her position and stop the puck. Pretty simple.
I agree that it was probably the right call... But man... That's ROUGH. If Mini still wins the series then it'll just be a funny footnote, but if they don't then this is going to be going to a literal nightmare for their entire lives...
I was there, Minnesota nice left after 5 minutes into the 1st period for those refs. A lady behind me shouted asking if anyone knew where they lived...for 'reasons' lol.

If the refs are going to call goalie interference there, they should have called the slash by the defender there as well.
The same happened few years ago at women’s world championships final at overtime. After celebrations, goal was disallowed and penalty was called for gollie interference. And of course, the other team won at the end of the day
Where was this for Bennet hit on Coyle???
as soon as that went in i just had a gut feeling it wouldnt count and couldnt let myself watch the celebration, especially of the fans 😬😭
If this was in the nhl especially teams like Boston Toronto Chicago and a lot of others those refs would be missing in a lake
I was there, Minnesota nice left after 5 minutes into the 1st period for those refs. A lady behind me shouted asking if anyone knew where they lived...for 'reasons' lol.
Even if the call was correct, sadly.
Honestly, as someone who's enjoyed the two PWHL Boston games I saw at the Tsongas center, I'm sad they don't at least get the chance to play the winner-take-all game 5 of the finals at TD Garden.
i like how the reffing in the women's league is better than the NHL lmao
What's with Elliote Friedman's sideburns? lol
easy call for me, but i can imagine the absolute pain for minnesota
Shades of 1999 and Dallas in the crease. It's a tough call to make, but it's the right one.
PS: Buffalo was robbed
It's the CLEAREST goalie interference call ever..... get over it
Right call but heartbreaking for the home team, and that kid in the audience crying was rough. Now it’s on MN to prove they deserve the cup.
I'm gonna say Boston wins, just because they're gritty as fuck when it counts. Also the wrestling match that happened earlier in the game had me laughing, don't get to see that often!
They have been showing too many kids crying 😂😂😂
she literally lost an edge on purpose to get the goalie off her angle n shit and then dished the puck back to the middle 😂😂😂😂😅
Im going to game 5! Hope that boston can pull it out after this game 4!
Wait, how can I watch these games? Do I have to pay on youtube or is it free?
Free. Can watch on RUclips on your TV or watch on a computer and chat.
