How an INFAMOUS blooper CHANGED NHL history

- Everyone remembers Patrik Stefan's missed empty netter, but what's often forgotten is the context around it. If Stefan had scored the goal, the NHL could have looked very different. Could Patrick Kane have been a member of the Edmonton Oilers?
“Averaged less than 30 points per game” ? That sounds reasonable 😂
I really wish Patrick Stefan would have 30 points a game average
Nice of TSN to rip off youtube channel Hockey Psychology's "This 'Mistake' Changed NHL Hockey Forever" video from a year ago
@@big_turk , I saw that one and was thinking about it. 👍
@@Oilers1972 yeah I remember watching it last year and watching a bit into this one, the similarities are definitely there haha
Using Secret Bases’ “Rewind” format too
Hockey Psychology is an Angry Hockey Good
@@NotodayUrsidae well Secret Base no Longer Covers Hockey anymore
The puck did hop on him right at the top of the crease.
Also that's a lot of ifs in there.
This situation could apply to the Hawks now if you think about it. If Kane’s buzzer beater against Vegas counted as a goal, they would’ve had one extra point and would have had the 4th overall pick and possibly never draft Bedard
A lot of chance every year
Kane in Edmonton = no Draisaitl or McDavid in Edmonton. Butterfly effect is undefeated
I'd still rather have the later two....
Hockey Psychology did it first and way better lol
and Odd Man Rush did it before Hockey Psychology too.
WHA did it way better than NHL.
This video i find explains better
the different lottery rules that were in place back then
It all worked out for us Oilers faithful. We love Gagner and he set the record AGAINST Chicago - The very team that could have drafted him.
We also got McDavid and Draisaitl.
Plus the experiencing of the decade of darkness. 😉 If the Oilers win 3 cups with them then we can say that.
Set what record???Loosing in a play in round to a team that had no bisness in the post season?😂
@@TheChronicFiend , he’s referring to the 8pt game by Gagne
@@TheChronicFiend Yes, I was referring to the 8 point game by Gagner. Sorry, I should have clarified
That's Hockey Baby
This video is well done. I am impressed with the clips you were able to find.
More content like this please 😊
Great video, hoping more like it happen. Hockey history could be really different if certain events happened differently
I remember watching this live while playing poker with some buddies. We couldn't believe our eyes. Short term bad luck not getting Kane but, in the long term, it worked out for the Oilers in the sense that everything over the years needed to line up perfectly for us to get McDavid.
IF Kane goes to the Oilers then they might've won the cups. they wouldnt have McDavid or Nuge with the first overall picks they had
That would have meant no Connor McDavid in Edmonton.
And that really would’ve been the best possible outcome for the game of hockey
not necessarily
@@lukez990, how would they score Connor with Patrick Kane? They wouldn’t have been in the draft lottery for him.
@@NotodayUrsidae, lol the Leafs would have done what they have with this core 4 so if you’re thinking it would have been better with him going there? Forget that.
I’ll never forget where I was when I watched that Stefan mishap. 32 years of watching hockey it is top 2 of craziest goals I’ve ever seen. The other that in my eyes has tied it was Crosbys golden goal.
A tale of two Patricks
That's amazing!!! Great video!
Karma bailed us out when a crappy Oiler team pulled out a win for Ryan Smyth’s last game (where he finally got to wear the C), pushing the Oilers ahead of the Panthers in the standings. The Panthers then won the lottery, selecting Ekblad, and the Oilers had to “settle” for Draisaitl
Edmonton still would’ve been horrible with Patty Kane and he would’ve wanted out
Sort of ok….
But also
We all know the oilers
They’d have Drafted Kyle Turris as they’d just gone to the final with a bigger team and McTavish hated skill.
The Black Hawks were an amazing team - but IMO, a dynasty should include a back to back.
Lmaoo I didnt know Stefan helped chicago get Kane. Thats wild
Marc andre bergeron though. not only was the guy a turnover factory, he blew out the knee of the oilers '06 cup, probably.
was that Ray Ferraro ripping on Stefan for missing the empty net? its not like he was going through his legs or some fancy play to score.
Edmonton didn't get Patrick Kane so they decided to get the next best one, Evander Kane.
Would Kane Have beat and robbed a cab driver in Edmonton?
Now that is a good question
It was in buffalo...in the offseason...people love talking about stuff they got no clue about😂
If you are not familiar with the cab drivers in Edmonton.. Kane would have been kidnapped 😂
Stefan made history.
It looks like the Edmonton turnover was also due to janky ice (odd puck movement made the player fan on the pass)
And we're still talkin about it!
But the question remains:
If Oilers had #1, would they pick Kane?
Knowing their draft history, they could have picked Kyle Turris or Jakub Voracek.
Patrick Kane, the luckiest man on earth. 3 cups and he didn't have to play in Edmonton.
Love the line , maybe the ice was that bad ......... yet you clearly watch the puck jump over his blade on its own ..... maybe the ice was bad ? lol ... maybe eh' ?
Gagner 8 pts > Kane 2 cups
3 baby, 3!
Stefan can blame the ice but there was no reason for him to go to his backhand, and CERTAINLY NO REASON for him to pass the puck back up the ice right on the Oilers stick after he fell. THAT play was WAY dumber than missing the net. Had he just corralled the puck and kept it near the boards EDM never would've had time to score. But he made a perfect pass from his ass to start the rush.
Cool video, but someone misses the playoffs by a point or two every year. You could find something like this every season.
also meant connor mcdavid would go somewhere else
30 points per game?
C'mon TSN, you're better than that, right?
Proofreading, maybe? Editing with headphones on, perhaps?
Good Lord.
And if Edmonton had gotten Kane then they wouldn't have been in a position to get Conner McDavid.
Stupid video. It was game 40 for Oilers in that season. They had another 42 games with ot losses an shootout misses, goalie mistakes and penalties that cost wins. That Stepan's miss did not change any history.
But it's still one that's funny😂
It's nice to pretend sometimes. I'd like to think I was married to Jessica Alba in an alternate universe.
Yeah um no. This game is not why the Blackhawks got Patrick Kane. This Game was on January 4th. A ton of season came after this, this is not the reason the Blackhawks finished worse than the Oilers.
Between 2010 and 2015, oh, cover up a couple of sexual assaults.
D all AS Stars 27 Oilers 8 ate 3
Fay Mountains
Are you serious? Only 30 points per game? Of course he was a bust! Who gets only 30 points per game? Nobody gets 30 points per game. He was destined for the AHL from the start with only 15 goals and 15 assists averaged PER game over a season or two on a team like the Atlanta Trashers in the early years. Yes they were closer to resembling the Trashers than an actual NHL team. But only 30 points per game? That's ridiculous. My grandma averages 30 points easy, right now so Stephan had it coming. I can do better than 30 points per game too without trying and one hand behind my back with my eyes closed while sleeping no problem really easily. Who can't? Those are video game stats. Just video game stats.
Wow
The obnoxious video effects make this unwatchable for me. I hate this modern trend.
World War 3
Bad ice 🤣🤣🤣 Edmonton got some of best ice in the league
How did the puck hop like that on good ice?
@@diamonddog13 It’s in the blue paint and looks like late in the period a lot of snow on the ice. Pucks do weird things on good ice all the time just one of the things that make hockey so great.
what nonsense
