I love the Gantz manga, I wholeheartedly believe Hiroya Oku is one of the most under appreciated mangaka in the west. I’m one of the few who enjoys Gigant and Inuyashiki is a straight up masterpiece
Well half of the excellent mangaka are under appreciated in the west. Look at Kurumada Masami who pretty much created battle Shonen with Ring ni Kakero, and developed it with Fuuma no Kojirou and Saint Seiya, but it’s always credited to Akira Toriyama or Buronson/Hara Tetsuo with their series. And the first two series haven’t even translated past the first third despite establishing the battle Shonen genre before Fist of the North Star had even been released. Edit: at least Saint Seiya is popular in the west, but with the Spanish and Portuguese populations, and not the English fanbase. I’m not sure about French or Italian tho where manga is popular as well.
You ain’t wrong, i will admit there are crazy amounts of mangaka that have no notoriety over here in the west, though that’s also because it’s a niche in Japan and a niche niche in the west lol beauty of art, there’s so much to explore in different mediums
I think the amount of unnecessary nudity in his manga is what makes people not going to recommend his work. Something like Berserk, at least there is meaning in the amount of sexuality scenes in the manga while in Gantz, hiroya is just horny lol. At least Gantz is successful enough in Japan, I seen him tweet that he doesn't need to make a new manga because Gantz still sells well.
There's certain parts of Inuyashiki that are great, I'd rather someone else do the same idea, but Gigant is awful. Where he's not tracing, basically every background, he's copying from himself. The heart from Inuyashiki is gone and the originality of Gantz is reversed.
best part of Gantz was how you were expecting there to be some profound meaning behind the "Gantz", the mysterious ball, the whole game. Is this Samsara? A cycle of death, rebirth, and suffering? and then at the end they straight up ask the God aliens "yo if you gave us all this tech to fight the aliens wtf was up with that Gantz shit?!" and the God aliens are like "IDK LOL that weirdo scientist made all that shit up lmao"
Basically, they didn't care at all and it was like a coin flip: should we prep this planet for an impending invasion or nah? Oh, ok, give em guns, supersuits and shit, i guess.
@@Scoring57 It's just kind of a flat ending, completely spells out the theme of cosmic insignificance and it's a bit too cruel even for Gantz's standard. After everything Kurono has done there's just straight up god that toys with life how it wants.
Thing is I found that explanation great and even realistic. Lol People with power don’t care about others and they absolutely would and do come up with crazy shit like that all the time.
@@night1952 "even for Gantz?" Dude, that ending is _essentially_ Gantz. When you read through the whole thing, you see all of existence as we understand it on display. The most striking to me wasn't the gang rape of the 40-ft alien women... it was the alien grandmother and grandson in the park who were kindly feeding the "animals," only to be be murdered in cold blood when one of those animals had the power to do so. But who was to blame? Those two weren't doing any harm... as far as we saw. It's entirely possible the next day they would have gone to an eatery serving human corpses in pasta like anchovies. We are ALL to blame, because not only do we forget who we are, but we ignore the parts about ourselves that we hate, and just go along with our own lives believing we're better than something or someone else. Like Kurono did. Like the "gods" did. The only true hero of the story is Kato, who agonizes over the weight of every decision to take the lives of creatures he knows nothing about. The entire series was only kicked into gear because HE was the one person in a sea of disgusting, mad individuals who believed the life of a drunken homeless man was worth saving. The LESSON is that none of it matters to anyone but yourself as an individual, but we can change that when we do our absolute best to take care of each other. -end
The quality of this video is insane and I can actually see your channel getting big in the future. Gantz holds a special place in my heart because I started reading it when i was 14 years old and since then every other manga seemed mediocre in comparison
I’ve been obsessed with Gantz since I was a kid and it feels me with joy when people give it a try despite its reputation. It really is one of the best mangas I’ve read action and character development wise, and you really put it in such a coherent way that I think anyone who feels compelled to read it after watching this video could still get an enjoyable and surprising experience. Great video, man! Looking forward to more videos of yours.
Been obsessed with it since I met a Puerto Rican girl in a chatroom back in '06 who was obsessed with it . I guess it was my first foray into gore. It put me off at first but the visuals haunted me for a few years. That cover where kei is being transported and you can see into her head. At the time my friend said she was getting 2 episodes a DVD for 25$ which it thought was mad
After all this time, and multiple rereads, I still hold Gantz as my all time favorite manga. It’s stupid, over the top, and insanely edgy, but I love it for that reason. You can feel the heart and passion that Hiroya Oku has put into each panel. Kei Kurono remains one of my favorite characters in manga because of his character development and arc throughout the series. It has not aged well, but I still love it all the same.
Edgy it's not good or Bad per se, and the "it hasnt afed well" commenr doesnt make any sense, Gantz wasnt beloved in their time either, inwould Say the weird Nature of the manga/anime Suits current times more than before, i mean things like chainsaw man become world wide popular, and it has a Lot of edgy, Percy and weird shit that wouldnt landed well at the time Gantz aired either
Honestly I think it's aged very well in a lot of respects, you rarely see stuff as original as Gantz anymore The rapey horniness? Yeah that part hasn't aged so well, but at the risk of sounding like too much of an apologist it really makes the "nasty parts of humanity" themes in Gantz feel more visceral and real, it feels so desperately horny and hormonal in a way that really feels like life and death lmao
Started to read in 2006 when I was in a very dark place of mind so I kind of vibed with the "this is human nature, no one cares about anyone" kind of thing. Ironically, as I progressed through the stor, I realized how this is more about life and protecting what's important to you. The manga isn't made for you to question all those things but it did for me and showed some new perspectives to me, it was pretty neat. I definitely agreed with everything including the ending and I hope someday we can see a proper anime adaptation, even though I doubt it wouldn't be censored to no ends. Great video.
I think it hits a soft space in most people, but especially men via Kei (MC). When we were kids, we did crazy shit that could get us grievously injured all the time, but we did them with confidence and young bodies. We can still do a lot of that up to a point, but that depends on how often we keep up with ourselves and keep using our bodies and minds that way. I'm 41, and incredibly flexible compared to many my age because I never stopped moving my body like it was the best thing ever (with some learning involved between more and less physically demanding jobs). And even now, I feel like i'm going insane having to worry about the horrible, defective, mind-killing shit adults are expected to. I want my OLD body back, so i took up practicing nunchaku in public, and running in places i'm not supposed to at work, and am looking into getting toe-shoes for jogging. It's not because i want to be fit, per-se, but because I want to be the ultimate version of myself, comfortable in my flesh-prison which needs not be a prison at all. Kei's journey from an apathetic, beat-down loser to the person he _was_ when he learned how to actualize is pretty fucking compelling, even when he banged Sei in a hallway because why not? And in the end, he still acknowledged her person, which I always thought was cool of him. He basically had a wife by that endpoint, and he wasn't afraid to be himself and wistful/fret/cry over seeing her again in the whims of the closest thing "God" has to explaining the abject pointlessness of our existence.
Finally a RUclipsr who discusses Gantz & Oku properly, knows their stuff, & doesn't straight-up hate either. I have a tattoo of Kei Kurono. Gantz is my favorite manga. I love it because of all its flaws; a passion project that celebrates exploitation whilst reflecting this complex human experience.
Gantz not being perfect actually fits, I remember reading it because the anime ended without doing the other arcs. Damn the arc after the anime ended went hard, gantz is goofy, dark, and emotional.
I love how his taste in film is film bro: basic edition. Like he likes awesome movies, but they are all movies that dude bros like, but is an absolute nerd with how many he’s seen.
I came from Reddit as well and must say you done Gantz justice. This series has become an obsession of mine since i read it for the first time a year and a half ago. It's what helped me get into manga. But even now Gantz and Oku are still my favorite manga and mangaka. Inuyashiki is 10/10 as well while Gigant.....has entertainment value. If you do make a video talking about those two series, then I earnestly await them 😁
Weekly Young Jump is literally the Shonen Jump of Seinen. It has most the biggest and most popular Seinen out there I believe. It has Kingdom, which is pretty much the One Piece of Seinen.
Always saw it as the Japanese jj Abrams 'lost' version. It wasn't about conclusive and satisfying writing. It was about a constant mystery box that moves so fast opening one right after the other It moves so fast you're still asking questions without being able to think about the answers. Its spectacle, it's fun some of the time and I totally understand why people loved it so much.
Great work Love this video in particular your're getting better with each series Also I have a suggestion for another video namely the OG Surreal Action COmedy manga Yoshio Sawai's Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
There was no need for post ending resolution as if you think about it, the manga literally ends where it started: just two dudes. Nothing grandiose like Kei being proclaimed as the champion of humanity. None of the messy politics of Gantz post-war, or the remaining players basically ending up being asshole saviors to the rest of humanity and subsequent world war utilizing the remaining alien tech as a mad scramble (if we all read the same manga, we all know that's the aftermath). Oku never really intended the people to have a happy ending as we traditionally know it, as the act of surviving itself has always been as best of an ending in of itself. With all that said, the ending feels as if it's finally the first time in a long time wherein one can have a moment to finally catch one's breath-- that longing for that moment of respite. Sure there's alot of messy loose ends in terms of world building, but it's really nice how it dials back to Kei and Kato's interpersonal relationships-- and that their characters' growth bears fruit in how they're both hugged by the people most important (and most pivotal) in their said growth. ------------------------------ We all know that the vampires were just added as a plot device / deus ex machina to kill Kei and usher forth a pivotal shift in the story (it's also the chapter wherein Oku went on hiatus). The fact that during the final battle they were just watching from the teleprompters tells us that they themselves realize just how insignificant they are (despite being vampires). ------------------------------ As for the limited rules.... most likely that's basically humans being assholes again. No matter how good or benign an intended project may seem in thought, it is still human nature that tends to pervert it to their own means. Also, limitation of resources (weapons / revives) tend to push people beyond their limit... plus even Gantz himself told Reika that there are things that are quite beyond his control to grant / give.
I went into gantz completely blind as a teen and tho i never finished it, i still enjoy it to this day and have fond memories of it. It’s just so. Insane.
What a great video ... I even recognized all the music haha it was a real joy revisiting this incredible series. A rollercoaster of human emotion like very few can hope to be, and a real inspiration to my own creative efforts. Thank you, definitely earned that subscription ! (also, the Trudeau joke had me laughing like a crazy person in the middle of the subway)
I read almost all of Gantz and I had NO IDEA that CGI was used in it... where as whenever I see CG in anime, I can always tell if it's bad or okay (with some expectations) I guess Gantz really is that great. Being able to blend in CG in the early 2000s
@@SlimeFancypants The closest thing to Gantz are dorohedoro by q hayashida and tatsuki Fujimoto works like fire punch and chainsaw man, which is weirdly pretty mainstream.
@@frog6054All those mangas are weird and insanely good, Dorohedoro and Fire Punch are also chaotic, but Gantz vibrates a different energy probably the genre
@@SlimeFancypants I just read the first volume a few weeks back, and it’s just awesome stuff. They are almost done with pre-time skip arc for the English release, and that where I wanna stop, because I heard that it gets too wacky after that with them treading old ground. I also personally like to end series where the author originally intends to end it, as it almost always feels more complete. I just wanna see more people talk about it, as I am getting into classic 80s battle manga like Ring ni Kakero, Kinnikuman and Dragon Ball as well and I think that era deserves more attention.
Found this on a vod on anime network and was instantly hooked, read the manga after watching the anime and was blown away! Kurono is one of my favorite protagonists so seeing him grow from being a lowly guy into a respectable hero was very satisfying. Given i enjoyed the anime for what it was but the manga was way better. Thank you for making this video!
41:45 the panel of Tae poking Kei's Noise, is that in the manga? Because I cant remember that happening... unless it's in the last arc. I was more invested in the clone Kei than the OG Kei.
you showed takeshi at 56:50 when saying something about not seeing how characters end up, and while that may be true takeshi is shown on muscle riders shoulders in the last panel
Absolutely fantastic video as always Slime, you're fantastic at expressing your opinions in an engaging way and your editing is mwa chefs kiss. I haven't seen much Gantz other than just people going "Hey here's a badass scene" or "Look at this edgey scene." So seeing the heart of Gantz has finally made me consider giving it a chance. Also loved seeing you go through Oku's older work to explain how he got to where Gantz is!
+SlimeFancypants Another great video Slime. I remember reading a series called Psyren; it was like a shonen version of Gantz, but without the batsh*t insantiy of Gantz was. Highly recommend Psyren if you want a solid manga to read.
I agree with most stuff you said in this video, I just want to bring forth some points of view from the perspective from a fan from very early in the manga's run. I got to know Gantz through the anime. Most people don't remember or know, but it was released in 2 parts, so to speak. At first, they only released 11 episodes (heavily censored, no explicit nudity nor mutilation and white fluid instead of blood) that later would be the first 13 episodes, that's how much it was being censored, so that's why the studio went to look for a different broadcasting network, and this seraph took a while, about 6 months in between, I think, after which, they re-launched from episode 1, all the way until episode 26, but ably 13 of those episodes being actual new plot. So, about midway through the first 11 episodes I looked it up and read all the manga chapters and stayed up to date all the way until the end. So while I do understand that you find funny the sudden stop ending, what you apparently are not considering, is the fact that a lot of us had spent a decade or more reading, talking, discussing and more, to just be done dirty like that. I won't say shit like that makes it bad or thrash or something like that, I just wanna point out why that is the biggest sticking point of the manga. About the blackface shooting. I do realize that nowadays that is a big deal, but back in 2005 when that went down, shootings weren't as common in USA as they are now, and the fact that he went with the blackface was because Izumi knew that he was going to revive and that he was going to appear in the room with many of his victims, so that's why he did everything in his power to hide his identity utilizing the only part of his body that he couldn't hide, his height, that's why he went as a black tall man! You can be as snowflake as you like, but from a writing perspective, it made all the sense in the world, at that time. Besides you do know that Japan (and specially Oku Hiroya) don't care much for PC culture. I did actually buy the game back in the day, and finished it, even though I can't read a lick of Japanese, I at least could somewhat understand spoken lines. But yeah, it's very simplistic and monotonous, but at the very least it had the actual fourth hunt (chibi alien) but since the the dino hunt was just wrapping up, we had barely seen the vampires, so the fifth hunt was changed to a vs vampires mission, which made it somewhat interesting. I also seem to recall the game having multiple endings, ranging from lone survivor to team leader if you managed to keep a lot of characters alive through dialogue, which was a thing. But yeah, I bought that and the Berserk game for PS2, and honestly, Berserk was the far superior game. Finally, while I do agree that if you try to watch the anime nowadays, it looks choppy and stilted, that was not so much the case back in 04 and 05, again, you are spoiled by the great levels of animation reached in the last 20 years by studios, but back then, while there were certainly some massive productions with impeccable animation like Evangelion, Cowboy Beebop and FMA, most production were not of those levels, and Gantz, specially on its second half (network) had a better animation than most at that time, go watch stuff like Chrno Crusade, Kiddy Grade or Vandread, all of them were pretty popular back in the day and had inferior animation to that of Gantz. All this to say, yeah, hindsight is 20/20 but things weren't as crystal clear back then. But yeah, as a big fan of Gantz, I would love an anime reboot, this time following the manga all the way to it's conclusion, could be in Gantz:O or in it's original style, don't care, I just want it. But I doubt it would be a possibility nowadays because of the shooting, the Osaka team, and the Cherry and Nishi arcs in Catastrophe, just to name a few, unless it gets somewhat censored in those instances.
The Gantz's opening is so cool. I remember I discovered the story through the anime and I personally loved the concept although I was very disappointed with the anime's ending and weird theme by the last few chapters. Over 5 years later, when the pandemic started I decided to read my first manga (not Gantz, it was Fuuka which is about music and stuff) I came across the Gantz's manga and read it in less than a week. It instantly became my favorite manga until now, having read A LOT of manga since then. I haven't taken the time to read both spin-offs, probably mainly bc I was uncertain as to whether they would live up to the original work and now I am definitely reading Gantz: E. The CGI movie is THE BEST ADAPTATION to a movie I have ever seen and I doubt there'll be anything close to it for a long time. Gantz rules 👊🏻
i watched the anime and the movie before reading the manga and I still remember the whole maga fully animated in my head I still hear Tae yelling Kay kun or something over and over again.
GANTZ one of my favorite manga it reminds me why I love reading manga its just this hilarious and fun sci fi series that knows what it is and doesn't have to be this big brain fake intellectual series. People also overlook its surprisingly optimistic message in the end with how Kei Kurono overcomes his own blackpilled and nihilistic mindset after being around so many new people.
I am a new yorker..ive been in the subways and there are in dent in the walls FOR the reason if a person feel they could be safe....ish. when they ran i was pissed and said "the WALL DENT!! WTFA
Thank you so much for this! Gantz is one of the first manga that I fully acommpanied as it was coming out, and is forever one of my favorites, crude stuff and all. Glad to see its still getting some love after all this time. Really great work on the video!
Watched your Ajin video, thought it was excellent. Saw a recommendation for your Gantz manga video and subscribed. Keep up the good work, and continue enjoying these human arts
Best or 2nd best Gantz Video on this site in my opinion. I wish that Gantz would have a bigger fanbase because I think the premise is so interesting and it could be taken on from so many different perspectives. Just writing it off as Edgy for appealing to young grown ups is a big miss in my opinion. I too read it when I was 18 and while also thought then that Kurono was massive scumbag at the beginning I could kinda relate to his struggle. Thank you for also drawing that out I think Kurono is a great Mc. One thing you as a fellow gamer should recognize though is how amazing a modern day Gantz game based on an original or the one from the manga would be. I mean imagine having like this gameplay style from the battle sections from the ps2 game but improved upon and then having a persona like out of mission slice of live. I think it could be amazing and Iam sad it is never going to happen.
I searched for a Gantz retrospective because I read it all back in the day and just started a novel series called Undying Mercenaries and the series really reminded me of Gantz. I had forgotten alot about Gantz and after watching this video I realised Undying Mercenaries was even more similar to Gants than I first thought. It's got revival machines, alien weapons, battles with dinosaurs, people being "revived" while still alive resulting in a clone, a galactic empire that thinks humans are trash but still wants to keep "order" and even the same level of horniness. It's a lot more political and hard scifi but I'm now 100 percent confident the author took inspection form Gantz.
Thanks for the info about Thunder 3!!! This is definitely his work. About Deluxe Edition: Oku showed the look of Japanese Deluxe Edition. English version probably will look the same way
RUclips is reading my mind. I haven't interacted with any gantz media for years but ot came to my mind recently and here i am. The crazy thing i just realized is that Kei's self worth was so low in the real world that he grew to like putting his life on the line to feel useful i can relate to that feeling and to anyone that can profit from it you're worth more than you know and you're stronger than you or anyone else knows.
When I decided to begin to read Manga's, thing like 15 years ago (and never stopped since then) I chose randomly 2 manga in the new releases part of the store: I chose Berserk and Gantz (Yeah, the Force was with me that day). I really love Gantz for one reason: I give to his reader somethings all manga should give: a unknown, original experience. Do you know any story who looks like Gantz? I read a lot of mangas and saw more animes, but no one I have seen looks like Gantz, and just for that, It was a good reason to read it
I’ll never forget the highs and lows that came with reading Gantz as it came out. Vampires! Psychics! DINOSAURS! FIGHTING PANDAS! You just had to go along with the fuckery, especially when it came with hiatuses.
Mystery stories always get kind of disappointing once the puzzle is solved. I am fine with a lot of questions staying unanswered. I was fine with the ending :) Nice video! Gants is just fun :D
I also don't get the "blackface" criticism. Was the story endorsing what Izumi did? Or was is portraying something a person could actually do? It's not like people haven't dressed up as black people and committed crimes before. It feels disingenuous when people react so strongly to that and keep bringing it up, but we have a whole bunch of real world racism that people endorse and give a pass on a consistent basis. The point was clearly Izumi was using a disguise that would make him completely disassociated from the crime. A disguise that would mean he wouldn't be a major suspect (maybe due to his height). At least that's how i saw it. Also, at least Izumi made himself look like an actual black person, a real disguise, not a racist caricature with exaggerated unrealistic features
Just came across your channel and immediately clicked because Gantz is one of my all time favorite, your retrospective videos are insane man please never stop making content the quality is fucking nuts
The Gantz manga is one of the only body of works that had me nervous to skip to the next page because I was afraid of who might die. Super intense and you feel the desperation to survive. Gantz-O was great but the manga is so raw and politically incorrect that there is no way to capture it faithfully in any other medium. It's one of those things that you keep thinking about long after you read it. As far as the story, it's one of those stories like Lost or Prometheus that's built on an amazing and out of this world concept but leaves you wanting more.
Gantz is perfect and has no flaws, shut up, the end. I don't know how some people make claims like it's violent for no reason or edgy when it's one of the most realistic mangas i've ever read. Either people don't know how real life works and how selfish and violent people can be, or they or they assume any extremely violent story is just is violent for the sake of gore. Human bodies aren't the most durable thing
Clicked on the video for Gantz, and commented due to the PPPPPP getting its flowers. Shueisha did that manga DIRTY. It was getting better every chapter yet (putting my hater cap on) a manga like blue box that has a meandering plot for over 90 chapters is still ongoing because *cute girls*
Gantz:0 Is the closest to a faithful adaptation we will ever get. It's sad because the potential showed in that movie just goes to waste w/no follow up.
There's no need to defend Izumi posing as a black man to commit a massacre, he's a bad guy. And there's good reason to do it like that, it's easy to pin an act of terrorism to a minority and since he's tall he can easily pass off as an stereotypical black man.
The “one piece” dinosaur character, the vampires, men in black rip off aspect, the kill bill references… it seems rushed and cheep at times but it is still great.
57:39 FYI Osaka arc was support to end it all but due to how much profit the manga popularity and Gantz merchandise were at the time the the company that own that stuff demand Oku to write more Gantz (that just the darkside of Manga during pre 2010 shit happen with Tokyo Revenger too it was suppost to end after chapter 194) and as we all know shit turn to worst and they let him where to end it after like 30s ish chapter in
Look, maybe next year there will really be some news about GANTZ, here in Brazil the publisher that launched Gantz's mangas has now announced at the end of the year that at the beginning of next year they will relaunch the mangas, that is, they will reprint all the volumes and relaunch monthly

Something like Berserk, at least there is meaning in the amount of sexuality scenes in the manga while in Gantz, hiroya is just horny lol. At least Gantz is successful enough in Japan, I seen him tweet that he doesn't need to make a new manga because Gantz still sells well.
Nah, I don't like his art. The pictures might look good, but the almost never felt alive.
A cycle of death, rebirth, and suffering?
and then at the end they straight up ask the God aliens "yo if you gave us all this tech to fight the aliens wtf was up with that Gantz shit?!"
and the God aliens are like "IDK LOL that weirdo scientist made all that shit up lmao"
Basically, they didn't care at all and it was like a coin flip: should we prep this planet for an impending invasion or nah? Oh, ok, give em guns, supersuits and shit, i guess.
@@Scoring57word
@@Scoring57 It's just kind of a flat ending, completely spells out the theme of cosmic insignificance and it's a bit too cruel even for Gantz's standard. After everything Kurono has done there's just straight up god that toys with life how it wants.
Thing is I found that explanation great and even realistic. Lol
People with power don’t care about others and they absolutely would and do come up with crazy shit like that all the time.

Why people say edgy like a bad thing. Berserker is edgy as fkk, thats what make those mangas unique
It’s a buzzword people love using nowadays
Honestly I think it's aged very well in a lot of respects, you rarely see stuff as original as Gantz anymore
The rapey horniness?
Like he likes awesome movies, but they are all movies that dude bros like, but is an absolute nerd with how many he’s seen.
what aere some of his favorite movies?
I came from Reddit as well and must say you done Gantz justice. This series has become an obsession of mine since i read it for the first time a year and a half ago. It's what helped me get into manga. But even now Gantz and Oku are still my favorite manga and mangaka.
Inuyashiki is 10/10 as well while Gigant.....has entertainment value.
If you do make a video talking about those two series, then I earnestly await them 😁
another banger video idk how youre still so underrated
Big same tbh, thanks!!
Weekly Young Jump is literally the Shonen Jump of Seinen. It has most the biggest and most popular Seinen out there I believe. It has Kingdom, which is pretty much the One Piece of Seinen.
Don’t ever compare kingdom to that garbage ever again

Have you ever read dorohedoro? I would love a big video essay on that series from your perspective
Dorohedoro is a personal 10/10 and for sure will happen here one day!

I’m always excited for new videos from you, keep it up man!!
Great work Love this video in particular your're getting better with each series Also I have a suggestion for another video namely the OG Surreal Action COmedy manga Yoshio Sawai's Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
My god this series is just heartbreaking but awesome. Also the Persona 2 duology is better than 3, 4, and 5. Yea I said it!
I RESPECT IT!!!
That is a pure fact
Also shinigami tensei>>>persona 3 4 and especially 5
Want that when it was basically just Shin Megami 3 before Shin Megami 3?
@@sonofsparta3858I still love the other 3 but that duology is so damn good
"Judith" sounding in the background as you said "A perfect circle". Exquisite
------------------------------
We all know that the vampires were just added as a plot device / deus ex machina to kill Kei and usher forth a pivotal shift in the story (it's also the chapter wherein Oku went on hiatus). The fact that during the final battle they were just watching from the teleprompters tells us that they themselves realize just how insignificant they are (despite being vampires).
------------------------------
As for the limited rules.... most likely that's basically humans being assholes again.
Insane.
I really need to get in to GANTZ
Hey, I didn’t know you watch Slime Fancypants.
It’s kinda bad, but in a really good way lol!!
Yes😊
What a great video ... I even recognized all the music haha it was a real joy revisiting this incredible series. A rollercoaster of human emotion like very few can hope to be, and a real inspiration to my own creative efforts. Thank you, definitely earned that subscription ! (also, the Trudeau joke had me laughing like a crazy person in the middle of the subway)
Just found this channel and I already feel your underrated keep up the good work man.
I read almost all of Gantz and I had NO IDEA that CGI was used in it... where as whenever I see CG in anime, I can always tell if it's bad or okay (with some expectations)
I guess Gantz really is that great. Being able to blend in CG in the early 2000s
I just finished reading it, this video dropped at the perfect time thanks man🙏🔥
The plans all coming together 🫡
hell yeah slime Gantz is one of my favorite manga!!!
Gantz was truly fun to read.
Nothing else like it tbh

The closest thing to Gantz are dorohedoro by q hayashida and tatsuki Fujimoto works like fire punch and chainsaw man, which is weirdly pretty mainstream.
@@frog6054All those mangas are weird and insanely good, Dorohedoro and Fire Punch are also chaotic, but Gantz vibrates a different energy probably the genre
Hey, when the final volume for Fist of the North will you review it? You know in like 2026.
I do love FOTNS so you never know 👀👀👀
@@SlimeFancypants I just read the first volume a few weeks back, and it’s just awesome stuff.
GANTZ is so good!

The algorithm brought me here. Awesome video. Liked and subscribed
41:45 the panel of Tae poking Kei's Noise, is that in the manga? Because I cant remember that happening... unless it's in the last arc. I was more invested in the clone Kei than the OG Kei.
It’s for sure from the manga, no clue where tho lol
@@SlimeFancypants Isn't it from when the aliens first invade? Kurono is at school and tries to protect everyone there
you showed takeshi at 56:50 when saying something about not seeing how characters end up, and while that may be true takeshi is shown on muscle riders shoulders in the last panel
Who is the guy with red hair on the far right at 34:35?
The guy who taught cherry the whole esp thing
Absolutely fantastic video as always Slime, you're fantastic at expressing your opinions in an engaging way and your editing is mwa chefs kiss. I haven't seen much Gantz other than just people going "Hey here's a badass scene" or "Look at this edgey scene." So seeing the heart of Gantz has finally made me consider giving it a chance. Also loved seeing you go through Oku's older work to explain how he got to where Gantz is!
Yooo thank you!!!
Gantz rules 👊🏻
ayyyyyeeeeeeeeEEEE les GoooHHH! new Slime
i watched the anime and the movie before reading the manga and I still remember the whole maga fully animated in my head I still hear Tae yelling Kay kun or something over and over again.

Appreciate that man!!
Yeah, kurono has one of the best character development, he is the most underrated protagonist
Amazing vid man. Definitely need something like this about Terraformars (which is coming back from hiatus this month!)

Great vid

RUclips is reading my mind. I haven't interacted with any gantz media for years but ot came to my mind recently and here i am. The crazy thing i just realized is that Kei's self worth was so low in the real world that he grew to like putting his life on the line to feel useful i can relate to that feeling and to anyone that can profit from it you're worth more than you know and you're stronger than you or anyone else knows.
You definitely deserve more subs! This video is incredible!
One day the algorithm will have to notice, probably 🫡
When I decided to begin to read Manga's, thing like 15 years ago (and never stopped since then) I chose randomly 2 manga in the new releases part of the store: I chose Berserk and Gantz (Yeah, the Force was with me that day). I really love Gantz for one reason: I give to his reader somethings all manga should give: a unknown, original experience. Do you know any story who looks like Gantz? I read a lot of mangas and saw more animes, but no one I have seen looks like Gantz, and just for that, It was a good reason to read it
The saddest part for me about the end was not seeing Takeshi get reunited with Kaze 🥲
They were there in the last panel though. You can see them on the right side in the crowd.
I’ll never forget the highs and lows that came with reading Gantz as it came out. Vampires! Psychics! DINOSAURS! FIGHTING PANDAS!
You just had to go along with the fuckery, especially when it came with hiatuses.
your channel's so good, I hope it blows up
I love the hell outta Gantz man, every part of it has so much heart and passion into it
I really loved the ending - made me cry. Amazing story! 9/10
Mystery stories always get kind of disappointing once the puzzle is solved. I am fine with a lot of questions staying unanswered. I was fine with the ending :)
Nice video! Gants is just fun :D
This video is so freaking well made it’s unreal that you have so few subscribers.
Immediately subscribed after finishing your video. Your channel is criminally underrated. Keep up the amazing work 🙌
I also don't get the "blackface" criticism.
When will it get deluxe edition
Just came across your channel and immediately clicked because Gantz is one of my all time favorite, your retrospective videos are insane man please never stop making content the quality is fucking nuts
great editing of panels, loved the slow movements!!

Gantz is amazing, one of the best mangas ever made.
Anyone know the song used at 0:50 ?
1:01:08 Dude! I'm pretty sure I almost cried, but definitely screamed "Fuck yeah!", when the kid did the move. So freaking awesome.
I’m surprised you don’t have more subs, I stumbled on your videos yesterday and each one of them have been great

The manga has always been chaotic, but that’s what makes it so unique and I love it for that.
Gantz:0 Is the closest to a faithful adaptation we will ever get. It's sad because the potential showed in that movie just goes to waste w/no follow up.
Great video!
I like the FoTNS head exploding sound effects @33:34 because the X gun the Gantz members all use is a for sure FoTN homage
"When your suits gone your a human vs a hurricane"

great video
1:01:09 Yeah, Takeshi using Kaze's Tetsuzanko was the proudest I've ever felt about a character ever lmao
Yes😊😊😊
10 years later and I still love Reika and Kuron(e). They deserved better
