Hi there! I'm with the scanlation team who currently translates Gash Bell 2 and the revamped version of Gash Bell 1 (vol. 4 is currently making great progress :D) and I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for not only incorporating our scans into a retrospective PSA about Gash Bell, but for also making such a PEAK video about the series, with production quality that blew my mind! The research that went into this is completely on point, the mastery of the material that you demonstrated was superb, and your eloquent explanations pertaining to just how unique and ahead of its time this franchise is... were all done to perfection! Once again, we acknowledge how you've helped raise awareness for both Gash Bell's sequel AND our current retranslation of the original series in one stellar move, and Zatch Bell Makai greatly appreciates it! :) Stay golden, my friend... and LONG LIVE KONJIKI NO GASH!!!
Yoooo!! Thank YOU for all the work you guys are doing, especially re-doing the early chapters recently!! It’s a special series and helping people experience it in any way is true king shit 🫡
@@SlimeFancypants Always happy to do it! :D And it's extremely cathartic to see those scans being put to such stellar use! This series is just so godly that it's easy to eat sleep and breathe Konjiki no Gash! But clearly I don't need to tell you that. ;) You've already proven and shared with everyone just how incredible Gash Bell truly is!
I loved the original. It hit me in a way that other popular series today generally can't. They way they can even make the filler content chapters actually feel organic and likable was different. But for the sequel, I'm a little worried about the whole Kiyomaru's seemingly missing answer talker. Need my boi Defaux to let him know he's pretty stupid. Becomes an archeologist in a similar fashion to how he used the answer talker in a non combat situation for the first time (when he was reading a textbook and fact checking the history to see where historians went wrong).
Us Gash fans must never stop talking about this series. We might not be that many anymore but we are DEDICATED. The fact that a series that uses the traditional shounen tropes as perfectly as this has faded into obscurity over the years is simply criminal. I will shill for this manga for the rest of my life until we get the anime remake that we deserve.
Yea I hate that most people who are into anine or trying to get into anime don't know about it or care to give it a chance it's definitely a classic. I wish they continued the story but all good things must come to an end.
As a huge advocate for the series, thanks for shining a spotlight on the franchise! It's an amazing manga that deserves way more attention! You touched on a lot of what makes it great, but I want to further clarify on what you said and bring up some brand new points. Firstly, as you say, the contrast between the goofy and serious is ABSOLUTELY the manga's biggest strength, both in it's artwork (where it goes from the silly reaction faces and visual gags, to the sketchy, cross-hatch shading and pitch black expansive shadows) and it's tone and narrative (from corny power of friendship moments, slice of life chapters, and absurdist comedy; to the absolute heart wrenching dark emotional moments). Gash Bell does a lot of things that, in other shonen, may come off as overly generic or cheesey, or as too tryhard or edgy, but that works in the series BECAUSE of that contrast: The darker moments help the otherwise corny stuff seem genuine and earned, and the lightier moments help the dark ones hit that much harder. The fact that the series can go from it's absurd humor to kids trying to end their life due to an absuive home life in the span of a few pages, and the tonal whiplash never takes you out of it is also a testament to Raiku's writing skills: It never feels unnatural or forced. I've only read a bit of One Piece, but that's the only other manga i've seen that comes close to Gash's use of both comedy and emotional moments. Secondly, as you say, the fact that the series never suffers from the pacing getting drawn out/the plot getting bloated, side characters getting sidelined (seriously, EVERY side character feels well utilized and stays relevant for as long as their book stays unburnt!), or over the top power escalation that makes the series lose sight of where it started is also a huge deal: Those are problems so many battle shonen suffer from, and it's just, like, not an issue in Gash: It only ever gets better the further in you get. I do think that this is at the cost of Gash's earlier volumes before it switches from the Weekly-Villain format to full arcs being not as good as the first 1-2 arcs of a lot of other shonen, but it's well worth it if you can get past that initial hump. I'd even disagree with you and argue that the Clear Note arc is still just as good as the Faudo arc: Clear may be a less interesting villain then Zeon (but a thematically apt one: What's a better final villain for a series with the theme of growth through friendship then a character who rejects all companionship?), but the arc itself is amazing, between everything with Kanchome, the choreography of Brago's fight vs Clear, the Golden book, etc,. Now, some stuff you didn't touch on much: I also think Gash Bell's power system and fights are pretty amazing. You note that every demon has cool spells and there's tactical fights, but I those were sort of throwaway lines, when I think they deserve more elaboration then that: Like most good shonen, characters in Gash don't share generic abilities, but have distinct powers that do different things, leading to different fighting styles and strategy needed to win. But it goes beyond that, since spells only every do 1 specific action each, characters cannot just say "well I have lighting powers so I can asspull my way into doing anything related to electricity". Rather, Zakeru can ONLY EVER be an electrical blast, Jikerudo can ONLY EVER be a magnetizing spell, and so on, which forces creative thinking and planning, especially so since there's a "mana" system meaning spells cost energy, so even late into the series, weaker spells have usage as a low cost option. Finally, once you get to volume 8 or so, almost every fight in the series becomes a team battle, with multiple human-demon pairs working together and mix-and matching their spell aresneals, which also helps tactics. (And of course, since every fighting has a human book master, they, too, can join the fight: Imagine a Pokemon battle where the trainer can throw down!) Perhaps even more important then the Jojo levels of battle tactics some fights can get is how spells are obtained: Demons get new spells when they grow as characters and their relationship with their human partner develops. What the spell is even ties into that development: Gash got Jikerudo after he resolved to be a kind king and not hurt others, and it's a non-offensive disabling spell. He got Rauzaruku, a spell that buffs his body, when he realized the power of new spells wasn't determined by the book but his own growth and HE had the power to protect others and grow stronger. You menti9oned that the characters are all likeable, and that Gash helps Kiyo open up to other people and make friends, but I think this bears expanding on: As much as Gash helped Kiyo become less jaded, Kiyo grounds Gash and his emotional maturity rubs off on him, and over the course of the series we see Gash, while always idealistic, become more mature and thotughtful as he learns from Kiyo and has to grapple with what being a king means. (I love the moment in the Faudo arc where we get a typical "Pick between two impossible choices, the protag picks a third choice" only for Gash to get told "no you naive fool, you have to actually pick", forcing him to actually logically come up with a concrete plan for that third option before Ashie and Riya agree to help him). It's not just Gash and Kiyo, but SO many other Demon-Human pairs have a variety of relationships, either akin to sibling, parent and child, or lovers, and personabilities and motivations that force each other to grow: Kanchome and Folgore are both total losers but they want the best for each other, so they step up and become brave and strong to help one another. Brago sees humans as an obstacle to him becoming king, as either things that get in the way in fights or his partner as something holding him back (The moment where he admits to her he never would have made it as far as he did without her being his partner is just perfection) while his partner Sherry sees demons as evil creatures destroying the world and people around them, and only gradually do we see Sherry win Brago's respect through her utter determination to win the tournament and not be a physical burden to him, and in turn Sherry recognizing Brago's emotional growth and belief in others. You compared them to Sasuke, but man, Sasuke WISHES he was even a quarter as consistently cool and likeable as either Brago or Sherry alone, let alone both. I could go on and on, but the last main point I'll bring up is I think you're underselling how terrible an adaptation the anime is. Yes, it has good music (both the main soundtrack and the song sequences with ChiChi wo Moge, Very Melon, Pattie's Song, Coral Q's song, etc), and some specific moments like Belegium EO vs Kid (actually better then the manga version) or the latter half of the Vincent Barry/Bari fight (which actually has the Manga's pitch black shadows, a shame the whole anime doesn't look like that), but in every other respect it drops the ball hard, from filler (Did you know it changes the Zofis fight so it's not just Sherry and Brago alone vs him, but it shoves Gash and go in the fight too? Disgraceful! Also, it's SO COOL in the manga Raiku allows that final fight of the arc to go to Sherry since it's her vendetta, without the protag) to poor art and animation and not handling the dark moments well... but it diverging from the manga's plot entirely in the middle of the Faudo Arc and never adapting the Clear arc is just unacceptable. Barry never shows up again! Wonlei vs Unko Tin Tin never happens! Zeon never gets his development! etc. Hopefully one day we get an anime adaptation that does the manga justice! To wrap things up, XZatchBellGamerX already said it, but it's super cool you used the Makai scans for this video. I also think it's really cool you got into the series due to a random post online; I spend so much time pushing the series, and while I'm not sure if the post you saw was from me (actually, I think I followed your readthrough before I got suspended! ) it's cool to know that it can make a difference and get people to check it out!
As a big fan of this series as well, I can't help but agree. Zatch Bell is many things a Shonen manga should aim to be, for all the reasons you said right there. The contrast between the humor and darker moments help each other, and never feel out of place with one another. It's what many manga writers should aim to have their series embody, if they're writing a series for a demographic and genre like this.
You didn't mention it, but the power system is also one of the best in manga. Not the powers themselves necessarily, but that the characters gain new powers due to character growth. The narrative in stories is the core to the story, with everything else just being how the narrative is expressed, so having a power system that is directly tied to the narrative is great. It's one of the reasons why Umineko is so good.
Zatch Bell is not only the only shonen manga I find myself re-reading but also my favorite shonen manga ever made, and it warms my heart every day to see it's being talked about by more and more people.
Zatch Bell was a HUGE part of my preteen years. I'm so happy that it's just started being published here in Brazil and, even thought we had tons of problems with the publication process, it's clear that the Brazilian editors are also fans of the manga and probably grew up watching the anime as well, so there's a ton of love in their work.
My head canon for Zatch’s name change, was to make his name sound closer to Zaker… That way in episode one, when Kiyo mispronounces Zatch’s name by saying “Zack or whatever…”, the spell goes off
Makes sense, because in Japanese he says fuzakeruna which is like stop f**king around and the spell is zakeru so that is what causes the spell to go off in the Japanese Manga. I grew up in Japan with this manga and it’s one of my all time favorites.
Thank god I’m not the only one who remembers this masterpiece fondly. Made a Reddit post talking about how much I loved it and how underrated it was even! Umagon deserves the world
@@SlimeFancypants BTW the editing in this video was really great, this was really enjoyable even as someone who has never read/watched Zatch Bell beyond a few episodes here and there.
I remember starting reading Gash Bell and thinking that Kiyo (mostly in the first chapter) felt very similar to Light Yagami. Both of them are extremely intelligent boys that are bored with their lives and think they're above everybody else... it's interesting to think about their parallels and the what-could-have-been's. While Light got the Death Note and Ryuk (which enabled his god complex and made his arrogance even worse, ultimately leading him to his demise), Kiyo got the spell book and Gash (which made him mature, make friends, and overall become a better person)
This is a great comparison, one that I see only a few times. Both are very smart but arrogant and have a pessimistic view of society. And both received a powerful book from a "demon realm". But Gash's presence and friendship is the main factor that changed everything. It's pretty interesting.
Thank you for making a Zatch Bell video, this manga has a big place in my hearth cause its what got me into manga in the first place but not just that, the story it tells can be both emotionally charging and very funny.
I don't think people discuss this too often, but I love how power levels are done in the series. Everyone starts off weak, kinda, but the writing makes it clear that there's a level of strategic use to spells. That makes battles a lot more dynamic and exciting, and as the the characters grow, so does the weight of the tension in the battles. By the end of the series when you see these huge spells that cover the entire horizon, you can almost feel it because you watched how carefully each of those characters grew. The good guys have this unbreakable resolve to beat the bad guy, and they trained HARD to match that resolve. The same could be said about Animal Land too, if I recall.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I absolutely CANNOT thank you enough. I loved this series as a kid and teen and even as a young adult. Learning Japanese has always been a goal of mine, but I told myself when I was 15 that if I ever became fluent in it, the first things I would do would be playing Chibi Robo Happy Richie Okaeri, and reading the last few volumes of the Manga that never got an English version. I have up to Volume 24, and was always told they only translated up to 25 and that there were 30 in total. So knowing they actually got 28 volumes translated and there are 33 was a big shock to me already. But finding out that it GOT A SEQUEL?! Oh my God, you have NO idea how much joy that brought me. I almost tore my stitches in my mouth from smiling so large and gleefully, (got all my wisdom teeth out), seriously thank you for making this video. Not only for telling me about that astounding revelation, but also just thank you for loving this series and putting it into the light for others who may not know it to see. As soon as I finished your video I checked out the sequel and it's SO good, immediately hooks you, thank GOD. Not like Boruto at all. Raiku is a true master at work, and you are a true hero to all of us fans that have been following this series since we were young. Thanks again.
So great vid but a couple things: 1. You were actually correct initially with the US volume count. While the Zatch Bell manga did have up to volume 29 scheduled for release, only up to volume 25 has ever been released in America, nothing beyond that ever actually got printed. 2. Zatch Bell's dub was not a 4Kids dub by any stretch, firstly it was not produced by the company of 4Kids it was actually commissioned by Viz Media who handled Naruto and Bleach's US distribution, secondly outside of some name and terminology changes, the dub was actually rather faithful, 4Kids dubs were infamous for essentially changing anime into seeming more like American cartoons and Zatch Bell's dub didn't do that 3. Since you mentioned Zatch's Japanese voice I think it should've been worth noting his English VA is also prolific in the industry voicing Jimmy Neutron, one of the most iconic Nickelodeon characters of the 2000s.
@@beetlehorn Oh yeah I understand, I'm not denying Zatch Bell's dub had censorship I just meant it was still ultimately an accurate representation of the show even with it as opposed to 4Kids who would for the most part turn the shows into something they weren't
It is crazy to me that your channel is this small!! The quality of your essays, the topics you pick, and the way structure and edit them are just 🤌🏼. Keep up this work my guy. You'll definitely blow up!!!
I would actually never complain about anything ever again if this series ever got a reprint. My delusions on that hope have kept me from collecting any of the Viz prints, but just yesterday actually I finally got my first 4 volumes of the series, with more to come. I probably won’t ever own all 25 English volumes, but any I can own as a piece of history will still be great. I watched the anime when it aired in the states when I was around 9-11 years old so it gives me so much nostalgia. This series just deserves so much more love and attention than it gets. Because of that, this video is highly appreciated 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Hey there, great video! Thanks for the mention of our article on the Raiku/Shogakukan lawsuit, his issues with editors and the larger context of the editor/artist/publisher relationship was something that always fascinated me. You've made a wonderful video giving attention to a series that really deserves a lot of love. Gash Bell is a series I used to read in Japan in Shonen Sunday alongside Inuyasha, and I was so excited when it began to gain ground in the US and was so disappointed when the manga release was dropped due to the lawsuit. Thanks for your great work and great channel!
One of my favorite streamers was talking about Zatch Bell 2 and since I was completely unfamiliar with it, I sought out a video to explain the plot. Needless to say, I'm sold. This sounds AMAZING. Thank you for all the work you put into this video, I can feel the passion you have for the series, and it's infected me too!
1:14 Seeing this video gave me SUCH instant ptsd, like my parents didnt have cable or wifi so when I got my first phone and saw that amv on youtube, it was my first ever experience with both rock music and anime. It had me in a total hook as well and I'm SO glad my first ever anime was something as funny and heartwarming as Inuyasha.
Recently finished my re-read of this series after loving it soncerely in my teenage years. Was so happy to see that it held up spectacularly. I cried at multiple points (no more than the final few pages which i disiticntly remember being the first time growing up that a piece of literature made me cry), I laughed, I would vocalize the spells out loud (especially during the more badass scenes). So glad to see more people picking up this amazing series. And grateful for the scantalators who are working to unarchive its past release/clean it up for new audiences.
Slime, it's thanks to this video that inspired me to read Zatch Bell and oh my god! It's a amazing series! I'm really thankful for the support and love this manga has and been given by it's community! So thanks you Slime for showing off a UNDERRATED manga!
@@SlimeFancypants Thanks! I'm also watching Trigun [1998's Anime too] I haven't read the manga yet since I'm in a period of my life where I'm stupidly busy! I do have a question? Any suggestions for amazing games with lovingly story? Since I'm a guy that love story-telling and peace! [Like Vash, I'm not someone that enjoy with violence but there is a few game for the expection like Ultrakill or Devil May Cry!] I'm curious?
it always feels good to see Zatchbell being talked about,it should be well regarded as the big shonens out there and i hope a new well made anime adaptation could make it shine as much as it can. Great job.
My #1. Cherish and Momon a best supporting cast - shoutouts to Barry, The fights incorporate an IMMENSE amount of physicality to them. Absolutely insane amounts. Grapples, throws(so many people forget humans are MADE TO THROW THINGS. We are GODLY at it.), clever positioning all around. A lot of it is generic here and there(not bad,) and a lot of the side reveal(Gash Cafe) stuff doesn't jibe perfectly with me, but it's absolutely incredible. Humor is heavily Japanese-slapstick based so some of it is just... out there and not for everyone. There's a lot of moments where you step back and remember that these Demon Children are just that - children. Zaruchimu is one I like. Like Bari/Barry, he takes a breath and realizes his bitterness, that he was way out of line, and apologizes to his partner(a hardened criminal that threatened to kill a child, though considering his expression at the time I don't think Raushin Mo was really gonna kill Alishie's younger brother) and you can see him obviously pining for Riou's friendship. He wanted to do something great AND found a kindred spirit in that aspiration. Absolutely SOLID stuff for an antagonist linked to a tertiary. Rodeaux is also an interesting case, because it's the stoic Chita/Cheeda that gives him a verbal jab that makes him second guess and ultimately fight against Godufa. Solid cast, great fight choreography, incredible spell designs(Dioga Raguryuu is one of the most incredibly drawn spells in the entire manga) and juicy, JUICY character development. 9/10 I reread it every couple of years. Special Notice: The Kido/Kyanchome/Belugimu EO fight is outright SUPERIOR in the anime. The music, the visuals(Mikoruo Ma Zegaruga) and Daria's voice... *mwah*
yo its awesome to see this how getting some love. no idea why youtube randomly recommeneded me an anime commentary channel, but I remember watching this show as a kid and LOVED IT! great content tyvm
Great video!. Gash Bell is probably my favorite show from when I was a kid, and it makes me really happy to know that now, in my country, the manga is currently being officialy released!
Glad I found this video. I loved Zatch Bell as a kid but never forgot it. This video gave me the push to read the series and I want to thank you for that.
Gash Bell deserves a remake for the anime that goes straight into Gash Bell 2. So happy to hear about the sequel! I thought that was a fan project when I first heard about it, I didn't know it was legit. So glad to learn about this. Can't wait to see Folgore kick some shit again. His final battle from the original where he proved why he was called the Invincible Iron Man Folgore with Kanchome might just be my favorite spread in a manga. Gash Bell easily has some of my favorite art in manga, especially those serious spreads and the fine level of detail put into each banger moment. I truly love this series
Great video! Gash bell is one of my favorite shonen of all time you should review or live react the new chapters, i really want this manga to get a remake anime like samurai X right now
I remember playing the Zatch Bell video games as a kid. I loved them to death, and Im now going through the manga. Its made me cry multiple times and im just getting started. Anyway, banger video! Keep it up!

Zatch Bell was my favorite cartoon from my childhood and it made me so sad that no one talked about it. I'm always the only one who remembers it at any group conversation. Having this video recommended by the algorithm was by far the best thing that happened to me this month I loved iiiiiittttttt
Awesome video, so glad to see this series getting more love lately. Need to make a video about it myself, eventually (bought the whole bunko set after all, lmao).
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for making a Zatch Bell video! This series is NOT talked about enough, and it will forever break my heart that the Anime adaptation was canceled. This is a tiny aside, but if anyone wants to check out a damn great Zatch Bell game, Zatch Bell Mamodo Fury is SO freaking good! Thank God for emulation!
I just watched this vid today and the way you described it especially the ending and how Gash and his bro are just two best friends is so great. Im for sure going to read this now!!!!!
First of all, insta-sub. THANK YOU for putting some Respect on Zatch Bell! It needs all the praise it can get for being so fuckin gud. I never cry when it comes to alot of shows but this had one or two episodes that actually made me shed a tear (as an adult, mind you). Having this as my 4th fav out of 30 means alot to me, and it breaks me every time that ppl are willfully missing out on it. Amazing cast, spells, dynamics, ideas, music and battles. If only the series had more games cuz it really deserves it
Glad to see another retrospective on this, I was a big fan of it growing up and the sequel was done REALLY well, no lame handovers, the spotlight was properly retained, each chapter always making me go "OHHHHHH, THEY'RE HERE!!". Hope it gets a proper anime remake faithful to the manga. The short stories at the Gash Cafe is actually such a good epilogue too. Kinda like post-release cast interviews where they talk about their experiences.
I feel like if the anime ever got a reboot/remake (like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood for example) we would see a lot of videos going over the fight scenes. Mark my words. "Zatch Bell VS Zeno Bell is Peak (Battle) Fiction" would be a common video if this series was more popular.
@blksmagma I was worried to. Then Zatch Bell II happened and the popularity of the fan made translations shows audiences would definitely enjoy a remake. Now all there is is convincing the author.
Ngl, I much prefer Zatch to Gash for two reasons: 1. It just sounds cooler, and it suits the character far better because 2. Zatch sounds a lot like zap, which is something lightning does and the element Zatch wields. :)
Konjiki no gash is peak shonen and literally my favourites of all time and in also criminally underwatched. Good video, imagine how emotional is this manga that this video made me cry remembering things from it. I need to re-read it
OK you got a new subscriber I learn so much about the author and the backround I read the manga years ago on a site that no longer exist Spectrum Nexus and loved it thought I don't remember it veryu well and did not know about part 2 so thanks a bunch!
The anime totally diverges from the plot of the manga, you need to switch to the manga if you want the actual expierence of the series. I'm not an anti-anime manga only guy, but in this case for this series, the anime just fundamentally does not tell the same story. The best place to give it a read is on mangadex
Thank you so much for this. Im so glad to see a video of someone screaming into the void about how great Gash is. Loved the anime as a kid, read the manga shortly after it ended. A series that was truly a jack of all trades, master of all.
Gash Bell needs as many videos about it as possible. I deserves recognition as one of the greats. Also, boy I hope you make a video on Animal Land. Cause that manga is a damn ride.
Arguably the most underrated manga. It truly is fantastic, and is one of those stories that while enjoyable for kids, can only be fully appreciated as an adult. It will make you FEEL things through the characters, and sometimes even makes you do so for both sides of the same fight. It is packed with moments that stick with you the rest of your life.
Very great write up video about my absolute favourite manga series. Also I legit cried reading part 2 just seeing the characters yelling their spells and shit. Just feels like seeing some super old friends and they didn’t change at all. Can’t wait for the rest of the story
I shit you not when I say gash bell is my favorite anime and manga of all time. Hell it's in my opinion the GREATEST shonen manga ever created that didn't come from JUMP. And the crazy thing is even AFTER the series has ended it's still selling like crazy, over 50 million copies in circulation if not higher. I wish this masterpiece would get a remake someday
How is that possible? I believe there was some lawsuits filed by the creator, so the ownership of the manga is now with the creator right? So is he the one printing the new copies?
It’s nice to see someone with the same start in anime! I watched the Zatch Bell anime as a kid, but didn’t pick up the manga until earlier this year. Finally wanted to know how it ended. The final attacks against Clear made this one of my favorite endings in manga.
If you're going to read modern comics I highly suggest X-Men Red. The premis is Storm and Magneto go to Mars to help lead and adjust the whole Civilization of mutants from a different realm. They were all the original mutants of Apocalypse so they have a survivor of the fittest mentality. And it just shows Storm and Magneto stepping up to lead but also to grow as well . Honestly all of the Krakoa era and House of X I really love. The mutants having their own country opened a lot of character development. characters that havent been used in decades. Plus the artwork is beautiful the fights are amazing and so many characters not grow only as people but in power.
I still remember when I first watched Zatch Bell..... I had watched countless Anime before (like Doraemon, Shinchan, Kochikame, etc.; couldn't get into DBZ back then) as well as Action oriented US cartoons; but nothing, I mean NOTHING was like Zatch Bell. At that time it completely blew away my mind; the action, the themes sprinkled with slight melodrama, the power system, the characters..... It's a show I am extremely nostalgic about; so much so I still haven't read the manga in fear it might tarnish those memories; but after watching this vid, I think I will go for it.
i love gash bell so much, a mediocre writter would have turned it into a rick a morty in n out the demon world shenanigans, but gash is about that life, the competition the journey the friends the foes the emotion the comedy pure gold

(And of course, since every fighting has a human book master, they, too, can join the fight: Imagine a Pokemon battle where the trainer can throw down!)
Perhaps even more important then the Jojo levels of battle tactics some fights can get is how spells are obtained: Demons get new spells when they grow as characters and their relationship with their human partner develops.
Sometimes the comedy can feel cringe but mostly it's ok
My head canon for Zatch’s name change, was to make his name sound closer to Zaker…
That way in episode one, when Kiyo mispronounces Zatch’s name by saying “Zack or whatever…”, the spell goes off
Makes sense, because in Japanese he says fuzakeruna which is like stop f**king around and the spell is zakeru so that is what causes the spell to go off in the Japanese Manga.
I grew up in Japan with this manga and it’s one of my all time favorites.
Thank god I’m not the only one who remembers this masterpiece fondly.
Made a Reddit post talking about how much I loved it and how underrated it was even!
Umagon deserves the world
I completely forgot this show. It was so good
The way you found Yu Yu Hakusho is so similar to me! except in my case it was one of the saint beast episodes, hooked me right away.
Toonami & Adult Swim really raised us all to be the biggest weebs possible lol
That’s such a cool comparison to make.
Especially because Light never once believed that he was wrong in anyway.
You can argue Kiyo would've ended up like Light if Zeno choose him as his partner instead.
This is a great comparison, one that I see only a few times. Both are very smart but arrogant and have a pessimistic view of society. And both received a powerful book from a "demon realm". But Gash's presence and friendship is the main factor that changed everything. It's pretty interesting.
Been seeing Zatch bell make a resurgence from content creators and I love it
Glad to see it finally getting the praise it deserves online
Next is Bobobobobobobo lol
Thank you for making a Zatch Bell video, this manga has a big place in my hearth cause its what got me into manga in the first place but not just that, the story it tells can be both emotionally charging and very funny.
Yooo glad you enjoyed it!!
So great vid but a couple things:
1. You were actually correct initially with the US volume count. While the Zatch Bell manga did have up to volume 29 scheduled for release, only up to volume 25 has ever been released in America, nothing beyond that ever actually got printed.
2. Zatch Bell's dub was not a 4Kids dub by any stretch, firstly it was not produced by the company of 4Kids it was actually commissioned by Viz Media who handled Naruto and Bleach's US distribution, secondly outside of some name and terminology changes, the dub was actually rather faithful, 4Kids dubs were infamous for essentially changing anime into seeming more like American cartoons and Zatch Bell's dub didn't do that
3. Since you mentioned Zatch's Japanese voice I think it should've been worth noting his English VA is also prolific in the industry voicing Jimmy Neutron, one of the most iconic Nickelodeon characters of the 2000s.
I do remember the dub removing blood and guns, so I think that might be where the confusion over it being 4kids comes from.
@@beetlehorn Oh yeah I understand, I'm not denying Zatch Bell's dub had censorship I just meant it was still ultimately an accurate representation of the show even with it as opposed to 4Kids who would for the most part turn the shows into something they weren't
If there's ever a reboot, I hope she reprises her role as Zatch along with most of the cast. She was made to play him.
Respect the GOAT 4kids
the way he makes circular eyes looks sharper than the square eyes in other manga is amazing, and genius
It is crazy to me that your channel is this small!!
The quality of your essays, the topics you pick, and the way structure and edit them are just 🤌🏼.
Keep up this work my guy. You'll definitely blow up!!!
Yooo thank you!! Fingers always crossed 🫡
The underrated king is back talking about a underrated gem.
You already know 🔥
@@SlimeFancypantsdo blue dragon next
I would actually never complain about anything ever again if this series ever got a reprint. My delusions on that hope have kept me from collecting any of the Viz prints, but just yesterday actually I finally got my first 4 volumes of the series, with more to come. I probably won’t ever own all 25 English volumes, but any I can own as a piece of history will still be great. I watched the anime when it aired in the states when I was around 9-11 years old so it gives me so much nostalgia. This series just deserves so much more love and attention than it gets. Because of that, this video is highly appreciated 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Honestly, it’s very possible now that there’s a sequel series
I'll buy your 4 copies
We got a new print of all the volume in Brazil.
Here in Brasil a lot of people said it wouldn't be published and the year it finally happened, you guys have hope.
another incredible vid bro just cant stop making peak content
Love the videos man your so underrated.
So great seeing more people talking about the Gash Bell manga.
Great video on a series that's near and dear to me, you got a new subscriber. Also great soundtrack choices.
Another great video from Slime I gotta read Zatch Bell now
Slime, it's thanks to this video that inspired me to read Zatch Bell and oh my god! It's a amazing series! I'm really thankful for the support and love this manga has and been given by it's community! So thanks you Slime for showing off a UNDERRATED manga!
YOOO! Love to hear it, glad you enjoy it!!
[Like Vash, I'm not someone that enjoy with violence but there is a few game for the expection like Ultrakill or Devil May Cry!]
I'm curious?
it always feels good to see Zatchbell being talked about,it should be well regarded as the big shonens out there and i hope a new well made anime adaptation could make it shine as much as it can. Great job.
Fantastic video as always.

*mwah*
my man Slime always coming with the fire uploads
Only thing I know how to do tbh 🫡
yo its awesome to see this how getting some love. no idea why youtube randomly recommeneded me an anime commentary channel, but I remember watching this show as a kid and LOVED IT! great content tyvm
Really appreciate the phenomenal editing on these, man. Love to see the art, and even more listen to you talk about the art
thank you for this video
Great video!. Gash Bell is probably my favorite show from when I was a kid, and it makes me really happy to know that now, in my country, the manga is currently being officialy released!
I remember watching Zatch Bell on Cartoon Network. Glad you are reviewing the series.
Nice video. Im glad to have found this video and all the other people who love this series as well, seriously is one of my all time favorites.
Great video that inteoduced me to my now favorite shonen action series
Another goated vid 🔥
🙏🏼 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Great video. You definitely did this series justice by going in depth with this review.
Great video! Gash bell is one of my favorite shonen of all time you should review or live react the new chapters, i really want this manga to get a remake anime like samurai X right now
Wow bro You're intro really welcome nostalgia out of me thank you. You gain a new subscriber keep up the good work!
I remember playing the Zatch Bell video games as a kid. I loved them to death, and Im now going through the manga. Its made me cry multiple times and im just getting started.
Anyway, banger video! Keep it up!
The sequel to the Zatch Bell manga is currently in production!

Love this series and video thanks for taking a deep dive it’s hard to find a good take on RUclips.
always happy to see videos on Zatch Bell, it truly doesn't receive enough credit
This video is RAW! Great stuff!
Zatch Bell and "Image of Hero" in the same video. You're really spoiling me here. Subbed!
10:13 I want you to retranslate the entire series
You know its crazy when you get recommended this after only thinking about it. Never typed in anything just remembered that I loved this growing up.
If only the series had more games cuz it really deserves it
4th favourite? What are the top 3 then?
Glad to see another retrospective on this, I was a big fan of it growing up and the sequel was done REALLY well, no lame handovers, the spotlight was properly retained, each chapter always making me go "OHHHHHH, THEY'RE HERE!!". Hope it gets a proper anime remake faithful to the manga. The short stories at the Gash Cafe is actually such a good epilogue too. Kinda like post-release cast interviews where they talk about their experiences.
Hey! Nothing was better than those running animations xD the face, the arms, it makes me laugh every time.
I'm legit worried that we won't ever see a remake of the anime.
@blksmagma I was worried to.
Another banger mah dood ! Thank you
Thanks for hitting me with this throwback. Now I'm gonna go and have a 300+ ch read.
my favorite anime essayist 🔥
Konjiki no gash is peak shonen and literally my favourites of all time and in also criminally underwatched.
Good video, imagine how emotional is this manga that this video made me cry remembering things from it.
I need to re-read it
Excelente video, mi Manga Favorito, aun no puedo creer que Raiku se mejore mes a mes con Konjiki no Gash 2!!
Welp you just earned a sub. A channel talking about this goat'ed manga? sign me up man!
Finally someone made a video of Zatch Bell you earned my respect with the Gantz video now sir I will follow you into the anime universe. o7
Zatch Bell was awesome! The creator made another manga called "Animal Land" and it is a straight banger
Tell me more.
New banger alert?
all I know how to do tbh 🫡
Your channel is fire here before 10k, it’ll be 100k before ya know it
Appreciate you 🤝
Ayyyyyyeeee its slimey time
we out here
Just found you! Great video bro, happy to see someone talking about Zatch. 😁
OK you got a new subscriber I learn so much about the author and the backround I read the manga years ago on a site that no longer exist Spectrum Nexus and loved it thought I don't remember it veryu well and did not know about part 2 so thanks a bunch!
Haven’t seen the video, only the thumbnail which made me interested so I checked out the anime. Pretty good show!
Thanks for this.
Always meant to get to this series.
Just discovered your channel! You deserve more subs bro! God bless!
Quanzhi fashi is also an amazing low key anime/ Manga definitely recommend great video man
Gash Bell needs as many videos about it as possible. I deserves recognition as one of the greats.
Also, boy I hope you make a video on Animal Land. Cause that manga is a damn ride.
Thank you for one getting eyes on this underrated gem of a manga! It follows common tropes but does them so well!
Thanks for the shout out, great video👍
Arguably the most underrated manga. It truly is fantastic, and is one of those stories that while enjoyable for kids, can only be fully appreciated as an adult. It will make you FEEL things through the characters, and sometimes even makes you do so for both sides of the same fight. It is packed with moments that stick with you the rest of your life.
Month/months long waits between videos is too long a wait for work of this high quality :/
Keep going!
One day of the algorithm & Patreon take off for me you can BET they’ll be faster and a lot higher quality lol
Zatch bell lets gooo!!! I love this manga but none of my friends have read it. So glad to see it getting love
I've been trying to find this for years!
I saw like 3 episodes as a kid and loved it!
Love your use of music especially PSO. Dig the nostalgia
Read the manga
i love gash bell so much, a mediocre writter would have turned it into a rick a morty in n out the demon world shenanigans, but gash is about that life, the competition the journey the friends the foes the emotion the comedy pure gold
