The best unintentional joke in the series I that of Crona's gender being forgotten by Ohkubo.
I love the progression of crona from disturbed teenager to straight up sleep, paralysis demon, like it gets pretty visceral at times and I eat that shit up.
I love the way this creator draws black characters especially there hairstyles which can be very hard to get right. His ability to tap into. Hip hop and graffiti style in general is also amazing and feels authentic
As much as I'm glad to see characters like Kilik and Noah, there is one part of the manga and anime where background characters are drawn in racist minstrel style. During the party where everyone gets trapped in the cube, the musicians...
Another gripe is, at least in the dub, when Crona joins the school, Maka refers to Sid looking scary like "a big blue gorilla" which doesn't sit well since he's also a black character. Not sure if that's what the manga said.
@@TurnipsThe manga says "A big blue hoodlum gorilla" which is arguably worse (And at least twice as funny). Japanese people generally aren't known for their racial sensitivity and most never even see a black person face to face.

For fans of fire force and soul eater I would highly recommend Gachiakuta, the debut manga series from Kei Urana. It's a fairly new ongoing series by the former assistant of Ohkubo during the run of Fire Force and it has some of the same vibes as his work with the art and power system as she said she has taken lots of inspiration from him. Might not be for everyone but it's pretty enjoyable so far and with time will only improve. Ohkubo himself called Urana his successor if that gives any merit to the quality you can expect out of it.
Also I'm pretty sure fire force is a prequel to soul eater

It's definitely goes a way when the mangaka themselves says it..insted of it being "applied "to the work by fans. Then it will get lumped in with "rip off " or "unoriginal " the unoriginal argument for any work make me laugh at em.
I've been grappling with why I have so much more fondness and think so much about Soul Eater as compared with other Shounen, because "art style good" didn't quite seem to cover it. You've got the most relatable and eloquent breakdown I've seen.

Growing up, nightmare before Christmas was more important. Having grown up, soul eater is way more emotion invoking and I love the aesthetic so much more.
Those 3 introduction episodes are among my favorite episodes of anything I've ever watched. Despite being disappointed with the latter part, there is just some exceptional spice going on on the beginning of Soul Eater. And the comedy, oh my god.

Soul Eater was my first anime ever, and my first manga when i finally moved into reading that. The whole thing is pretty close to the heart from story to aesthetic. And despite all the various cool panels my favourite page remains the title page of Chapter 87"Just a Simple Story About Killing People"

Never did I think you'd cover Soul Eater but MAAAAAAAAAAN, this hit home. Soul Eater was definitely the first anime Ive ever watched that made me want to keep getting into it. It influences so much of my art in ways I can't explain honestly. Great video as always man, its always a blast hearing your retrospectives
I love that I could watch the show as a teen and now as a man in my 30s, my daughter loves Soul Eater just as much and just the first three episodes sending her into a spiral of doing her own art, animations, and the like. I'm so proud and Soul Eater is what initially unlocked it. Even my toddler has apparently become super into the "spooky aesthetic" (She absolutely loves zombies, Halloween, etc) and while she might be too young to actually watch the series, she still loves all of the art and design of the show.

Thanks for the shout out. I had a very similar experience with Soul Eater. I watched the first 15 episodes ish, then dropped it, even though it checks a lot of boxes for me.
This video certainly makes me want to pick up the series again cause I feel like what happened when I revisited One Piece will happen again with Soul Eater.

This was a great break down of a series that found a place in my heart just like Dragon ball and sailor moon did. I was very disappointed that a anime that I could re watch ended with filler, it just killed the vibe that was produced through the series. Thanks for the great video.
Justin Law is probably my favorite character in Soul Eater, even if he serves mostly to contrast with characters such as Crona, his desing, combat scenes and even his fall to madness is just so fucking cool.

Blackstar is probably my favorite anime character of all time. His arc and growth throughout the manga is great. He even matures.
I’m 27 and if I was a Mangaka I’d literally be self published with producing a story that’s half Shounen action half porn. Looks like his love for Fan-Service hasn’t changed in the almost two decades since Soul Eater and Fire Force.
Lol man the fan service in fire force made it hard for me to take it serious, however I watched soul eater a looong time ago an forgot that it was even associated with fan service at all.

I'm bad at words so the only way I can describe Soul Eater (particularly the art style) is that it pours cold water on my brain.
Not a night goes by where I don't thank this series for fucking up my fashion sense in the best way possible. Something in my brain flips a switch when I wear the most punkass Urban Goth style I can get my dry little claws on.
ANYWAY. I think my best shitty Soul Eater related fact is that since Death City is in Nevada, it's entirely possible for almost any given character in the series to have been to the Clown Motel.
Fuuuuuckin' beautiful video, my man! I got into anime pretty late and this was one of the few I started off with. Watching this video not only did I learn a lot about Soul Eater itself and Atsushi Ohkubo, but more importantly you reminded me of why I loved it so much - especially aesthetically.

9:53- what makes this manga unique is that it doesn’t do just one major protagonist intro chapter- it does three back to back to understand who they are fundamentally and their dynamics. And it’s about these potential main characters bouncing off each other for the rest of the series- with each having a major focus without downplaying the other- sure Maka is at the top, but the other two are never treated like sidekicks

He was one of my first cosplay, back in 2010 (ouch), and I've always felt a deep connection to him.
Yanno it's interesting, I remember enjoying Maka's japanese VA bc compared to any other young teenage girl I'd heard in anime up until that point she was the first to actually sound her age, which in retrospect probably had to do with the VA being so inexperienced at the time.
She just came off as very authentic to me, and it probably helped that I was still kinda new to the japanese language so I had very little point of reference to what made for good convincing voice acting (as long as it didn't sound way too wooden it was all good)

I hear the argument a lot that you can't expect POC characters in manga because they're Japanese, so to hear an actual Japanese artist state that there are not enough black characters is refreshing. and on the topic notice how this argument never extends to white presenting characters, why are there so many British, French, American, and Italian anime characters in manga if Japanese people are so limited by their own culture?

I will say this, this video's release was extremely convenient because, i finished the first volume of soul eater a couple of days ago, and i ended up enjoying it a lot! Now that I've seen your video about the series, i'm even more motivated to experience this series through to the end! And for that, i thank you!
OK IMPORTANT UPDATE! After two months of reading, I've finally finished the series and gotta say, it greatly surpassed my expectations! Despite not expecting it, soul eater has all of the makings of a great manga for me! From the world, the characters, the art, the story and themes, all "resonated" with PERFECTLY! It's as if this manga was kind of made for me, and to top it all of with an extremely filling finale, made this series go from a 8.5/10 to a 9/10. Also here are some small side notes. Black star is PEAK! Soul and Maka are easily in my top ten protagonists of all time, I love the resolution between the DWMA and the witches and I love the way Stein's and Marie's relationship evolved. Most importantly however, I gotta thank you @SlimeFancypants for motivating me even further to finish this! I've been a regular viewer ever since the trigun video, (I love that series too btw), and I love everything about your videos. Keep at it man!
Resonance and Papermoon were and still are my emo anthems lol. I just watched the series again a few years ago and honestly after watching this I might have to again; tho I am still waiting for either a new adaptation or a continuation of the story from where the og series left off since I've heard there's a ton more to the manga story than the anime got to cover.
Also I absolutely need one of those art books, I might have to sell my plasma to afford it, but it's 100% worth it to me. The different artworks you've shown throughout are just beyond impressive in every way to me, and I've always enjoyed the art style and aesthetic surrounding Soul Eater ❤
I got into the anime when I was 7 in 2014 and basically fell in love, crona was my first fictional crush and I wanted to mimick the art soooo bad. But also learning it took place in Nevada was hilariously fitting for me. TikTok reignited my fixation on the series and I’ve decided to start collecting the manga, just ordered the first 2 volumes I’m so excited

I'm glad I found this video in my recommended list for one of my favorite manga/anime of all time. I've been praying for a remake and hope its anounced this year. I'm so fond of Soul Eater not just because of the 2000s astetics becuase I remember when it was on Netflix it's one of my first anime's I watched with my Elder Brother. When I read the manga it made me fall head over heels for the series. Me watching this video is just a another justification and why I love this series so much. It also justifes me creating my Crossover fic with Toaru and Soul Eater on my channel.

I needed a long form soul eater video, this was perfect it's still one of my top series Fire Force following after, awesome video. As a gen z i never really grown up with the things you mentioned but am aware of their relevance to teens of the prior generation and it was a lot of fun hearing it from someone who was, this series bleach and kingdom hearts feeding into my inspirations for both stories and art (and air gear is slowly creeping up there) the vibes of all of these are great but Soul Eater's especially are my the ones that make me feel at ease despite madness, seeing the cast do their thing always hits

Something that always stood out to me about Soul Eater was how realistic the main cast’s friendship felt. Feel free to disagree but the interaction felt way more genuine than anything out of Naruto, One Piece, Fairy Tail or any other series of the time whose core concept was friendship

The manga chapter with Chrona's picture book is a single manga chapter that I think works as a perfect self contained story. I wish I could get it like a comic book issue and get it bagged, framed and put it on my shelf.

Such a good vid. Soul Eater really does deserve the FMA treatment, a remake with the manga ending would go hard specially now that the late 90s early 00s aesthetic is its own subculture.
Also seeing Chrona now still makes me feel weird, like she/him being the most ambigous when it comes to gender ticks a box for some reason.
this anime is like my comfort anime of all time. its so obvious that not a single second of the show is wasted (even the filler episodes!!) and having only watched the anime i do have to say that in my opinion the ending was so satisfactory. i understand wanting to see more of the final fight but like in the anime its so perfectly crafted and makas final punch sooo good. its pure silence and the feeling of "it is done" which i appreciate so much. i disagree on your point about the voiceactor for maka, cuz i dont think if its not her voice.. no other voice would fit for her. i truly cant imagine any other voiceactress who could have portrayed her "nerdy" origin or whatever.
