- Power amp comparison using a guitar with a Lollar Blackface pickup (clean) and a Bare knuckle Black Dog pickup (Dirty):
-Rocktron Velocity 300
-Matrix GT1000FX
-Phonic 740 Powerpod Plus
-Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, solo head
The preamp is a Fractal Axe FX 2 and the cab is a 2x12 Mesa Stiletto with Celestion V30

Hey, thanks for this kind of videos...I mean, I'm fed up of cab simulations. While everyone going straight to the sound interface, you make a good job with things that have to do with real guitarist enviroment. Thanks
Happy to help ! I was thinking the same thing !!
Interesting. Thanks for the shootout. Differences are subtle, but definitely there especially on the high gain. They all sound very usable, not sure which one I like the most. I probably like the Mesa the least, strange enough.
You're welcome !!
B Rocktron Velocity 300
A Matrix GT1000FX
C Phonic 740 Powerpod Plus
D Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, solo head
Im looking at getting a power amp like this, do you still have any of these amps? Would you still recommend any of them? Im running 2x12 and 4x12 cabs with vintage 30s, i have tried a crown solid state power amp and found it too be way too muffled/lacking top end, and i also have a marshall el 34 50/50 power amp which sounds great, nice presence etc, but it weighs a ton and im hoping i can get something solid state that will do a close approximation.
any recommendations would be appreciated, thanks
the cleans were way more subtle and chimey on the mesa for sure. on the gain i didnt notice much at all tbh...except some more harmonics on the mesa on the long chord if i really listened closely
I like B and D for dirty. They sound more open instead of compressed. Not much differences between the two in my ears.
I found the 100 watt version of the rocktron barely used for $84.
I'm curious, where was the master volume set on the Matrix? I've heard they sound muffled and thin until the MV is set to 2-3 o'clock.
I believe it was at 1 o'clock but I'm not sure, I recorded these a while ago !
Rocktron wins, no surprise either as they have been doing rack power amps forever. The Mesa sounds marginally better, the Matrix is decent but a little thin.
Hey, I've got a similar setup - what settings do you prefer on the velocity300? I keep my reactance around 2oclock and definition around noon
Hey ! I sold it and I don't remember... sorry !!
So which is which?
Can't really tell a difference, all sound good

Great test! Which one you felt accurate to the Axe's line sound?
Hmmm, tough question. I guess I would say the matrix since it seems to me like it has the less noticeable imprint.
Thank you for your opinion! Your test is very useful for those who use amplifier simulators.
B-D-C-A
I liked the Matrix by far.
They all sound pretty much the same. My conclusion: expend more money in the preamp. My only concern is if the rocktron 300 would have enough volume to play with a loud band.
It is very loud !! I would not have any concerns about that
Matrix by far
Matrix is really the worst. Rocktron and Mesa are winners.
I agree (listening with MDR-7506 phones).
Rocktron wins, boogie 2nd, other 2 pile of crap
I agree (listening with MDR-7506 phones).
