    Gotta say your choice in gear is beyond impeccable. Your studio must run a great biz to get that kind of gear on hand. That VHT cost more than my car. I even see a triaxis and very spiff parametric eq favored by dime bag. The FISH is just legendary and not easy to come by so super congrats there, score!!! Never seen one in the wild in 10 years.

    Regardless of the poweramp used you absolutely nailed Jerry's chainsaw buzzing, earth shattering, moving the Alpes mid heavy crushing tone! Always wanted a Bogner Extacy, maybe one day. Maybe a Bogner Red Pedal with my old 5150 combo would do well. Anyhow, thanks again for this vid. Sound quality is perfect, visuals looks great and are nice and cheeky! ;) Loved The Great Beardo Trooch! Spit my coffee out when Rhenhold said hello! lmao. Content keeps getting better and I'm always salvating for more. Truly my fav subscription. Also really admire your versatile chops! You can shred and keep the rhythm tight!

And the other on the G string (second fret) is not bad either !!! What gauge do you use Michael ? You nailed it !

    With any solid state amp, i had to use the BBE rack mounted sonic maximizer to get the tone close to a tube sound. I was using an ADA MP-1 and a B200S ADA power amp in my rack. Miss the sounds I could have but always found myself sticking close to a favorite clean and a favorite dirty and did not like programming a huge rack into banks to what I thought I would need in a show. I went back to floor pedals and 2 tube amps....much happier and loose when I play and can duplicate any recorded sound live much easier.

    Great video!
    I own an original fish pre with a shark channel modded by Reinhold. I highly recommend having the shark channel modded to have a pot instead of the switch.
    I've used it with the 2150, Mosvalve 500, and Mesa simul 290. Each of these amps sounded great in their own right. I prefer the 290 for the diversity with the different modes. I spoke to Chris Poland about his preference since he is a fish user. He prefers the Mosvalve live but, if I remember correctly, he used the 290 with the fish on the "system has failed". My personal experience is modded shark channel+290 = mass quantities of heaviness.

    A comparison video between the Triple Giant and Bogner Fish preamp through the VHT would be super neat-o.

  • @johngerson7335

    Had (have. it's for sale) the Triple Giant, had the IE-4, had the CAA 3+, hell, I even had Hughes & Kettner's 3 channel whatever-the-heck it was. Power was Marshall 9000 50/50 an' Boogie Simul - 395. Still have both of those, although the Boogie definitely needs some serious TLC.
    Never had the pleasure of owning a Fish or the Groove Tubes Trio. Ah well...you can't have everything. Oh wait... I forgot who's site I was commenting on lol!
    Love your uploads man, lotta fun, lotta great info, lotta real darned fine picking too!
    Just for giggles, the VHT seemed to have the best characteristics of the Boogie (tubular grunt) and the Jackson (chainsaw articulation) for applying to that AIC thang. Just my goofy opinion, thanks for the upload.

    When Jerry was using the Fish as his main line tone it had the Bogner "anthrax" mod to add gain. I know I read the reason he switched to the Mosvalve 500 poweramps was because it was way too dark.

    Hi Michael, it seems that you like switching pickups in your Les Pauls, what do you consider to be the best fit to get the big hairy guitar sound ? Stock Gibson pickup ? Thank you very much, and thank you for your channel !

    • @BigHairyGuitars
      @BigHairyGuitars  7 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching Sepultubob (ha! Best name!) Pickup switching is a weird thing. I look at it as the 1st of many amplifiers for the guitar. Whereas many people think of them as the initial tone generator. But, I find that a great pickup can also sound crapy in a great guitar if the EQ curve doesn't match up to what the guitar and strings are giving off.
      SO, sometimes stock is best, BUT, in my LP Standard the stock pickups were good, but I felt that there was a little bit of mud and honkiness coming through. So I switched to Lollar Imperials, which are very "normal" sounding pickups. In my Standard, they are very balanced and sound like a good ol' Les Paul. My LP Custom is a '74. Neck is original and great, but the bridge was replaced ages ago, and I didn't love the sound, it was kinda woofy. So, I ended up with a Motor City Detroiter which didn't sound that great in my Luxxtone. BUT, it sounds great in my LP.
      I still LOVE the sound of EMG's in my LP standard, but I also missed that classic passive Les Paul sound, so one day I'll probably get another LP with EMG's.
      I guess, thinking about it I've changed pickups in most of my guitars. Huh. I never really though about that before. I think my Big Hairy sound is when there's just a little too much bass in the bottom. I love a tight bottom, but I prefer when there's a little blossom and bloom to the bottom end notes. And the top needs to have a little cut, like a Van Halen top with a ZZ top bottom.

      Actually, the Dirt tone was a mix of early Dual Recto, Rockman and the Bogner modded Jcm 800. Facelift was recorded entirely with that Bogner modded 800.
      Nice video nonetheless.

    • @BigHairyGuitars
      @BigHairyGuitars  8 лет назад +1

      +Grim Dawn Yeah, I've heard that was the recording setup, and that Dave Jerden (the Producer/Mixer) would blend to taste, using the Rockman as the "High's", the Recto for "Lows" and the Bogner for "Mids". To my ear, the Rockman and the Recto have a very recognizable tone, and your can hear them poke through from time to time. The early Bogner stuff also had a recognizable thing once your ear targets it. Especially if you hear on old Bogner Giant preamp and some old Bogner Marshall mods. It's something in the mids that's very "Bogner" to me. The Fish has some of that Bogner midrange. IMO the Bogner is the closest single amp to the old AIC sound. It's WAY harder to try to get a Jerry Cantrell tone with a Dual Recto... and near impossible with a Rockman! ;) Thanks for watching and chiming in Grim!

    • @SuckerFreeGear
      @SuckerFreeGear 6 лет назад +1

      Grim Dawn There were or was a Bogner Fish on the Dirt recording with the Shark mod and a VHT2150. Dan Spitz provided Jerry with one. You can even see a Bogner Fish used by Kirk Hammett recording the black album at One on One studios in LA.

    No way you have Lee Jackson SP-1000! :D I've been looking that. I've seen it pop up for years for a cheap price and wanted to see it, but just when I had the money and the need, there's none or people ask a lot.
    Gotta say I'm surprised how people tend to say power amp doesn't matter that much, but obviously all of them sounded clearly different.
    Interesting about this video is that I heard a word megadeth used Fish and VHT on rust in peace but I really didn't hear it here, maybe the solo had some of that in those bends especially. I also watched another vid with less high quality recording but it might've had more of the sound. I guess Les Paul isn't the optimal guitar for that either.

    • @BigHairyGuitars
      @BigHairyGuitars  5 лет назад

      Yeah, the Lee Jackson stuff has a cool, interesting tone. I'll do a vid on that one day (I promise). Rust wasn't a Bogner Fish. It was a Bogner Giant, or Bogner designed Hafler Triple Giant. The Fish came out in 92, a few years after Rust. For countdown, they used a Custom Audio Electronics CAE3+ preamp. I can't say that I'm aware of the Fish getting into their racks... but I'd love to see a picture or interview confirming that. IMHO, the Fish is way to squishy for Megadeth... well, maybe the Sharp channel with a BBE.

    Lee Jackson sounds "weaker", but hard to call it out for being not tube. Just got one to finally have a full rack and not to need to use tube head's power amp. VHT2150 takes the day easily. It's "fresh" in eq, breathing and open, but still has that low end punch. Mesa was a bit too dark and full to my taste. TubeWorks just worked but nothing special to say about it. I tend to come back to these rack preamp and poweramp shootouts because they're just enjoyable. I also started thinking your channel logo follows those prestigious amps, like Fish, Soldano, VHT2150. Just don't know what the red stripe would be.
