    What's the best way to overcome a terrible canalboat accident? On this 3 day adventure we travel the English River Great Ouse in search of some answers.
    Not only do we come up with a grand plan of action but also have an incredibly rare and spectacular wildlife sighting in the form of an 1.5 meter long snake! Chris was of course terrified whilst Becks was in her element!
    Hang with us as we navigate the realities of narrowboat ownership and restoration and edge ever so closer to a fully fledged off grid narrowboat life.

Eberspacher comes with a water pump you can also use with the back boiler setup, and I have a pipe stat that kicks it in! Also use a Google nest with a smart diverts valve so I can have hot water or radiators or both. And as it’s a nest, I can turn the heating on / off from anywhere with a phone signal! And further valued information was on how to make cord. Those bits of advice will stay with me forever. I did not like the look of that Spider, yikes! great to hear the Dramatic music at this point. If you are keeping a log/coal burner you might as well have a back boiler which will heat the radiators at the same time. Also get a calorifier which will heat the water when you run the engine. you can also forage for wood for the log burner which is free!

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Год назад +3

      thats a great idea Geoff, weve been told the back boilers do have alot of problems so have always heard off a bit, a clarifier is the next big thing on the list, then we just have to work out the way we want to heat it when were not cruising , thanks

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Год назад +1

      We have played around with this idea as we have a back boiler for our stove. The only thing is that we were thinking more for days when it's not quite warm enough for the stove but wanting some heat to take the edge off. It's such a tricky decision to figure out what's best! As for the calorifier we are in the midst of looking for one at the moment so hopefully we will get that installed soon 😊 Yay for foraging too 😊

    • @greeneye3907
      @greeneye3907 Год назад +1

      @@TheNomadicCrobotwanting some heat to take the edge off, use the stove anyway and then open the windows and doors if need be. We have an eberspacher or whatever they are called to heat the radiators and water but we never use it. The radiators just don't do enough and it uses the same amount of diesel as running the engine so we do that if need be as it chargers the batteries also.

      We hardly ever use our wabasto, maybe twice a year, if that 😂 I’d say the most important thing would be a calorifier and just use the engine for hot water until you get another heating method. Gas is cleaner & has little smell compared to diesel smoke & spills - Second suggest tankless instant heater at 6Ltrs or more - Oh costs start at 150 for a beginner test model then too infinity - buy local for any warranty problems or trade - use quick/easy connections for pipes - in case handicapped Chis does the install - he he

    I was about to message you guys to make sure you’re alright, I’m sure I haven’t missed an episode, maybe I should check back but every morning I check specifically looking fir your vlog. So nice to just get out on the water. Whatever you decide to use for your hot water, with the exception of your Aldi is going to cost a pretty penny, I imagine even the Aldi will need new wiring and maybe a few parts. We had the diesel Wabasco (my spelling)put in the caravan and that was $3200 but it was for heating, brilliant though. Good luck with the decision. Great seeing you. 💕

      Thank you so much for the love Pauline, we had a week off after our silly crash, but back ready to go again, The Aldi does seam like it could cost alot more in the long run, its a minefield, alot of great comments to hopefully help point us in the right direction, the Wabasto seams the direction were looking if we can fit it ourselves, but there not cheap especially if you get someone to fit it for you, take care

    Quick fix when you notice a vibration from the prop or rather just bring the bring the lever to neutral and then a quick burst a stone and look over the sound of the vessel and if you see a load of weed you’ve won and you don’t need to go down to the inspection hatch.

  • @WifeofJim
    @WifeofJim Год назад

    Personally, I’d use a calorifier for your hot water, especially if you’re going to be cruising most days. If it’s a toss up between gas or diesel, then you’ll probably find that diesel is marginally cheaper and more readily available than LPG. For top up heating where you only need an hour or so’s heat, like on chilly early spring mornings that are followed by warm sunny days, then you might consider the sort of diesel heater that are used in HGV vehicles and which can be run from your main diesel tank and which will send a nice blast of warm air into your boat.
    Becky, you could probably earn some money by teaching others your awesome bushcraft skills as you travel around the system. Lots of places have local Facebook pages that you could use to let people know when you’re going to be there and invite folks to come along and make some string or whatever for a small fee. It’s not difficult to get going, you need a business plan (nothing complicated), suitable 3rd party insurance (prob get that through your boat insurer) and a traders licence from the Canal and River Trust. Just a thought.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Год назад +1

      yes the clarifier is actually our next thing on the endless list of things to do, were measuring up today and hopefully ordering her up fingers crossed. The diesel boiler seams to be the best option...were just worried were opening up a whole new tin of worms with it. Id love to see Becca use some of her special skills in the future...im sure there way she could make a living from it all shes so crafty and great with these sort of things, we had heard about the trade licence thanks for your insight Sheila

    A great vlog once again.
    Talk to other Boaters about the good and the bad regarding your boiler,don’t go down the route of the cheap Chinese knock off Webasco type heaters though !. At least with Webasco you get a lifetime warranty and you won’t have any problems with insurance of your boat with those fitted ( been a few incidents with the cheap Chinese ones and insurers are tending to do surveys of the boat and the heater unit placement etc before they will insure you ).
    If you are going to be having fires,couple of things you can do for safety and keeping other people happy about the mess left behind :-
    1 : Old 25gallon steel drum,cut the bottom off and use that as your fire base/pit/ash collector ( it keeps the fire contained within the Steel and has a raised edge to rest a grill ( wire rack on ),when you are finished and it’s Cooled down you can pick the whole thing up and store it away and just tip your ashes out of the Base.
    2 : Dig out a fire pit and when you are finished, use the soil to put on top of the ashes.
    You should when mooring,not have the rope tied off on the Bank pin !.
    You want the pins that have a Ring on them and then you have one end tied off on the boat,go to the pin through the ring and back to the cleats on your boat. ( If you are tied on the boat you will feel if someone climbs aboard to undo your lines )
    If you are tied up on the Bank,anyone can walk past,undo your lines and you won’t know anything about it until you realise that you are drifting off down the Canal ! It’s kid’s favourite trick/prank during the summer months 🤷‍♂️.
    Oh dear Chris ? Scared of a Grass Snake ?….. Dude they eat frogs and take small eggs , they wouldn’t try to eat a Swans Egg because they are too big and Swans are dangerous when something goes a bit too close to their Nest.
    You should get yourself a Rod Licence and when you are moored up,do a spot of fishing,it’s quite relaxing and you can even eat some of the Fish ( I’m more catch and release ) but each to their own and quite a lot of people eat Carp and Pike these days,not something I would personally entertain myself though with the Sh1t that is sometimes in the Canals !( literally Sh1t 😳🤢 ).
    I’m just down the Road from where you are At your Marina and you never know I may pop by there one day ?!! Bearing Gifts of the Liquids variety of course 😁

    The alde boiler will be cheaper to run if you get refillable safefill bottles. Expensive to buy but pay for themselves in no time. LPG autogas is about 70 pence per litre so works out miles cheaper than propane bottle swaps. It's what we have in our caravan. Get a calorifier fitted too, which gives you hot water when the engine runs by circulating your water in a heating coil using engine heat to warm it. That way you have 2 ways of heating.
    Those were mirror carp I think, not koi.

    Oh I recognise this mindset. Go off into nature to consider the weightier matters in life that need attention.... and then 'oh sod it, it's all too difficult, this is giving me a headache, let's relax!' When feeling like this I resort to a line in Max Ehrman's poem Deciderata. .... 'And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.' It'll all work out in its own good time! A very successful and interesting trip even without a conclusion!

    1. Go massive on solar with a good battery bank and look to cook using electric during the summer months and coal/wood during the winter months
    OR
    2. Webasto option gives you hot water and heating as well as an alternative means of heating the boat. One big advantage of the Webasto during the winter is you can programme it to come on early before you get up so you don’t have to wander around in the freezing cold trying to light a fire.

    PRIORITIES? There are only FOUR: 1. Listen to Bex, and learn! 2 Get a PROFESSIONAL engine service - including changing oil and filters (talk to James of The Narrowboat that James Built for advice on that). 3. Make sure your batteries are healthy, and charging. 4.Make sure you've got a working loo. THAT'S IT, then just GO. You can attend to the luxuries later, e.g. hot water and cooked food. And forget about that leak, all boats leak; get a bilge pump.
