I wouldn't consider what you're describing is the "comfort zone" but rather your "happy place" and "simple pleasures".
"Comfort Zone" is the limited range in which you can enjoy something without the anxiety that comes from fear.
Are you afraid to not watch RUclips videos? Are you afraid to leave the house? Probably not.
Comfort Zone is what limits your behavior.
Are you afraid to ask for a raise, even though your productivity and last quarter are no longer fairly compensated? Are you afraid to interview for new jobs, even though you're dissatisfied in your work place? Are you afraid to tell a loved one about something that bothers you in your relationship? Are you afraid of moving, even though you're unhappy in your current location and know you can afford a new apartment in a different location with similar cost of living.
That's the Comfort Zone. The area which continues your behavior from ingrained habits that prevents you from changing due to underlying limiting beliefs; feelings of inadequacy, fearing rejection, intimacy, failure, abandonment. The idea that you're "not good enough" or "happy enough".
It's the place that keeps you where you are and stops you from where you want to go because stepping out of it means challenging how you view yourself, and that causes immense discomfort.

Thank you, I was going to comment this. The moment I saw the thumbnail I knew he wasnt reeally talking about the actual comfort zone. People in comfort zones might be in a bad relationship, addicted to drugs, in a job they don't like... it would be more comfortable to keep the bad behavior or environment, but they shouldn't. Happy places or being grateful for what you have is great, but it's not really the comfort zone we talk about getting out of.

I think it is important not to depend on your external comfort zone for inner peace. For example, hardships are an inevitability of life which lie outside of our "comfort zone," yet it is still possible to find happiness and peace within oneself during times of hardship. This is the true comfort zone we should not try to break out of.

I love the comfort zone too. I like to see it as expanding the comfort zone, instead of completely leaving it. Like having one feet in the comfort zone, and the other in the unknown. by taking little steps the comfort zone expands, and more options will be available. When I completely leave my comfort zone, the chances are high I will get stress and fears which may prevent further growth.

Very good video Einzelgänger, I have discovered not long ago what you are explaining: the comfort zone is the best place to feel real happiness. Until that time I have been traveling without fixed goals and this had created a lot of anxiety in the past. Now I am a much more relaxed person and I can really work in what I like thanks to my everyday routine. This had shown me that life is not about reaching out to unknown territory but to build your own reality with the things that you truly love, and this is only achieved by full dedication.

Fact: Many of life's challenges and tribulations come at you daily even when you do not invite them. Therefore it is good to have some degree of comfort zone to go to when you need that peace and balance. This my philosophy at age 70. I am happy to have my comfort zone (faith in God, peaceful home, healthy simple food, quiet activities I enjoy, beauty around me, a fairly intact loving family when we need each other, and a spirit of gratitude for all these things. We have worked hard and been out of our comfort zone and expanded thousands of times which cannot be avoided. And extreme strife is to be avoided. But then always circle back to that desired place of contentment and some degree of peace.

I can see that there are some that seek to enjoy a calmer, more comfortable life, that do not wish to join the populist view that outwards achievement has more value and should, therefore, inspire more respected. Sadly, some that feel comfortable can sometimes feel unappreciated because their achievements are not truly valued by current standards. They can even made to feel as failures simply because they have a different definition of success. I enjoy my comfort zone and all the quietness that it offers. Although I do not feel alone in it or seek validation in my beliefs, it is rather nice to feel I am not the only one with such views and I do have company. Thank you all for showing up

Interesting thought, it really gives the term comfort zone some shade. What I would like to add is that introverted people require solitude to recharge. Especially in today's age where external stimuli can be immense. To cope with this demand, the comfort zone might just be completely necessary for some.

When I was in my 20s, I persistently moved out of my comfort zone to become the best version of myself. I experienced episodes of anxiety and stress due to uncertainty. During those years, I became sickly, depressed, and exhausted. Consequently, I decided to move back to an easier and more controlled life. Although there were times when it felt boring, I could see that it significantly improved my overall well-being. I agree with other comments: increase your comfort zone gradually, taking baby steps at a time. There's no need to rush.

    Hi Einzelgänger,
Thank you for this video. I have been moving around for the last 2 years (1 year backpacking solo overseas) and since returning back to Australia 8 months ago to a new state (I chose not to return to my last place of living before I left aus), I’ve continued to be on the move here too. I have felt challenged by the decision of where to live, where to start over. It’s like my whole life is starting from scratch and I actually have been thinking I could of stretched myself so far and snapped many times however kept pushing on and not settling in a new place at least no longer than 3 months at a time. I am always torn between to keep travelling or to stop and build a “nest” so to speak which I would love, I’d love a cozy home and regular circle of friends, connection. I have wondered if travelling like this has now become my Comfort zone hence why I find it hard to stop. Starting my life from scratch with lots of options and opportunity is great but overwhelming. I have a plan but I would love some feedback from you :)

Perhaps it is more about the question of why you leave your comfort zone.
If you do this from an internal drive (intrinsic motivation), it's a good thing.
However, if you do this to please others or to achieve other people's goals, then it is bad.

I concur. It is counter to the popular consensus that to grow u need to have appropriate stress. I even suspect it is a dogma that corporate shovel onto its employee to accept whatever hardship coming. I think the best way to learn, to succeed, is to feel no anxiety,no stress, to get into the flow zone that we feel we are at out most productive state. Just look at Warren buffett, he got no stress from doing his best work, and he never change his principle in his work. Compare this to the prevailing dogma that we need to constantly change, to adapt. I think people need to understand the difference between change and learning. Never stop learning, but never change your principles once you found the right ones.

All advice must be viewed from the context in which it was intended to be received. Regardless of the subject matter one approach is not going to be appropriate for all situations. In many cases this is exactly the type of mindset that can bring any group endeavour to a screeching halt. If everyone involved in such group undertakings took a omnipotent approach to their tasks many more of them would turn out successful. Thanks again for your presentation.

I think comfort is a wonderful place but not one we should linger in too long.
Comfort can help with rest and re-energising.
One cannot simply endlessly seek novelty or they will exist as a self-indulgent tumbleweed.
I get inspired by new experiences and concepts but only in a place of comfort can I ruminate on their uses and development into my skill set or worldview

My only problem with all the "get out of your comfort zone" advice is that it's literally telling you to throw yourself in the deep end. It often doesn't consider gradually working your way into something. I prefer that rather than just swan diving out of your comfort zone, expand it.
