I'm Syrian, I left my country due to the Civil war that's going on. Left my family and my friends, the ones who haven't died yet.
I lived in Africa for two years and saw what means to be truly poor. I've seen children going through trash and eat half rotten food. I've seen old people sleeping in the dirt. I've seen the most ugliest side of life.
I felt sorry for myself until I saw people who are going through stuff I couldn't imagine possible.
Always be thankful for what you have. Always imagine yourself in others places. This way you'll feel less sorry for your self and will appreciate your life more.

@@bernhardvonbarret1729 you messed my point. I would love to become rich and live peacefully with my family till I die. My point was if you focus on your misfortune you will be seeing half the picture.
What I learned is that I have to appreciate what I have while trying to make it better.
I learned not to throw out food. To talk to my loved every chance I get. To remember my dead friends and try to live my life fully for them.
I don't know what's the future is hiding for me and I wish that I'll see better days but I will not deregard what I already have for the sake of the unknown or spend my days grieving over thing I don't have control over.

The society we live in today is so money dependant that you can't really do anything without it. I tend to always forget and take fro granted the basic needs (food, shelter) and worry that I cannot afford to buy a house or to buy new clothes or to have a car, etc. Because that's the way we are raised in the modern culture, to have more, to walk over everything for money and wealth.

The video is a gem. Here's a summary - but, by no means it replaces the watch-experience of this content.
    1) Be thankful for the basics that you have, because that's all that you really need
    2) Focus on what you can influence , don't overthink events that are out of our control ( e.g. CoVid)
    3) Ask for help. We are all in this together. By helping each other out, we do better as a whole
    4) You are not alone in your current scenario. There are millions of others undergoing the same situation
    5) Put your tranquility first. Your peace of mind is more important than outside affairs
    6) Remember what you DO HAVE. And Ignore what you don't
The most important resource we all have in hand is TIME.
Here's wishing love, luck and mental calm as prepare for a brave new world.

My wife and I make excellent money. We are empty nesters, and being home (net) nearly twice as much money as many people who raise an entire family with. That being said, I constantly worry about our finances. I think this comes from being in a pretty dire situation about 12 years ago. We had no control over our finances and often had more going out than we did coming in. We spent 3 years cleaning up that mess and now have no debt other than our house. When your gross combine salaries are nearly $155K and you owe only on a monthly mortgage of $1100, you should feel like you hit the lottery. I certainly need to start subscribing to a lot of the guidance this author gives. In the end, money comes, and money goes. True friends and family are really what provide value and satisfaction.

It all comes down to accepting the fact that we don't control events that are outside our mind. The sooner a person accepts that the ONLY thing you have and control are your thoughts and your virtues the sooner you will have peace of mind and greater ability to make correct decisions.

  • @fmayer1507
    @fmayer1507 4 года назад +1

Good video! The key to useful stoicism is to apply the rational parts of this philosophy such as asking for help, much less ego, not being so focused on accumulating more junk and more focus on doing what you can control to achieve virtue that drives to the greatest good. Taking stoicism to an extreme is in itself turning it into a passion of pride and that defeats tranquility itself. This is the paradox!
People who get so focused on a problem that they cannot act and get sick due to being consumed with the passion of pride that will not accept that certain situations are out of our ability to control. What good is there with doing that? These stoic virtues: Wisdom, Courage, Temperance, and Justice are very useful and they are what will bring mankind to a much better world then the modern imperatives of "everyone for themselves," "if it feels good do it" and "accumulation of more useless toys" libertine passions ever will.
The people who have known real poverty that I see in many of the comments below are forced to be stoic and are more likely to be resilient than spoiled and childish first world people who are consumed with having to "have it all" beyond any rational control of nonsensical passions.
Like everything else in the real world, the good life is achieving balance and striving for virtue in doing good for others for the sake of just doing good without going to extremes or expecting rewards. The striving for a utopia that will never exist has brought about the existence of most tyrannical governments that ever existed. These "populist" movements have often committed genocide and other horrific injustices on a scale that has reached the heights of depravity and misery. If we had more stoicism focused on virtue in our world leaders, we would avoid most of the poverty, destruction of the environment and injustice that we see increasing every day.

Question, I have always been attracted to aestheticism. Not the philosophical current, but aesthetics in an artistic way. Thing is, aestheticism often derives me from my goals. I do not seek money, but I seek beauty in art, architecture, nature, poetry, etc. What would stoics say about this? Is art a form of distraction that could lead someone to work in order to obtain aesthetically pleasing things.

the sad thing is many people realize that they haven't lived until they have no time left in this world, that's when people really acknowledge the fact that money is just a piece of paper and time is everything.
