A lot of people don't feel comfortable with the idea of slow living because they see it as being lazy which they'll feel guilty for and their peers will reinforce that.

It's because corporations and oligarchs only benefit from a fast-paced, hyper-consumerist, tired, unsatisfied, unhappy populace. So they do everything they can to maintain the status quo and gaslight us into thinking a slow life is wrong.

As an autistic person I absolutely relate to that, most of my life whether it be education or just dealing with adult responsibilities my 100% is half of whatever the standard is for everyone else. So when I slowed down and started taking care of my mental health and limited how much I do in a day even if people weren’t saying it I constantly get this gut feeling of “you’re lazy and not doing enough”

I agree with Thoreau, but it is worth mentioning that his mother did much of his laundry and meal-making for him while he was doing this Walden Pond experiment. That doesn't invalidate his philosophy, but it does mean, to me, that if we are to promote it, we need to be concerned with wider socioeconomic issues that impact all of us and marginalized people especially so that all of us may be able to live our lives fully, slowly, and meaningfully.

I spent years before the pandemic craving a slower, more contemplative life. Now I am closer to that than ever after practicing mindfulness, focusing on healing from burnout, depression & anxiety after loosing my job & my dad in the same year (pre-2020) AND thanks to the immense changes (& opportunities) that the global pandemic created!! I was sooooo grateful when the world shutdown, despite the tragic circumstances!! I had longed for the world to “just stop” so I could “catch up.” Now I know there is no point in running around and that there is no where to run to! I am here. I am now. I am doing what today requires first and then preparing for whatever comes next. I stop & smell the roses - literally. I pay attention to the breeze in my hair & the sun on my skin. I remind myself that a noisy, messy household is the joy of this life right now; someday it will be all gone and the echoes of the laughter & arguments just a memory of “the good old days” seen from the distance of my future empty nester self. ❤😊

As i got older, i noticed that i cared less about taking the pictures and more about the experience of just being there, enjoying what i loved. I believe saving memories is important for remembering but, no picture will ever replicate the feeling of the appreciation you gain from living in that one moment in time that you never get back, ever. the pictures were not perfect and they look old now.... but, the feeling i get in my heart when i think back to those days as a memory is immortally perfect, as if it were yesterday. i love your videos man, thank you for bringing insightfulness to the meanings of life for the few of us who truly understand it. I arrived at this realisation in my late ‘60s and am now an active participant in slow living. I’ve prioritised living in the slow lane allowing me time to think, to appreciate the small things in life and not feel the need to take part in the race of life. I now have as much time as I want to do satisfying and enriching activities often from the comfort of my bed. I think lots of people think that I’m simply lazy not realising that I am actively living my best life. Get off the treadmill folks it frees up energy for critical thought and prioritising what is important to you.

Idk if it is just me but I think as adult, there's unwritten pressure that we put ourselves in and that steals the joy of our living. As a child to young adulthood, I used to enjoy listening to a dripping water from a faucet in a silent and sunny afternoon. Years ago when I was in college, my cousin & her friend came to the city where I was for summer holidays, one day we decided to visit a famous historical place with ancient building, both of them is super excited they were bubbling with joy, I thought they were really excited about the place so I'm happy along, even with the super hot sun (being in tropical country) they both insisted on wearing their 'beautiful clothes' & spending hours on dressing up & do make up, by mid morning almost noon the temperature already very high but again we take public bus, I'm still going along😅 with idea that they're really excited to experience.
Long story short despite some unpleasant things along the way, it was fine for me no big deal.
We rushed to the place after
bought tickets (it's not cheap but not expensive either) I've visited before so after enter the garden area even though there are lots of tourists it was quiet & peaceful with some corner there's calm traditional music is being played. Also I don't like going out on hot days but at that time being in the garden I feel everything slow down & enjoying it, but I still bring the 2 new people to the main attraction area, my mind already prepared being a guide & ready to tell them the story, but in the end we just rushed there taking pictures here & there - both update on the social media, it's just several minutes in front but both of them already lost interest & doesn't want to continue looking inside or around, they said "it was just like that & it's all similar", so we rushed again to shopping area outside & food area too cooling down bcz they don't want to holding anything heavy except the camera not even hat, ☂️, drinks etc only me bring it. But they lost interest soon .. again!
So just like that we're rushing back, after back at home, they're complained about the hot weather & too lazy to cook/walking 100s meter to eat out, so we order online delivery for lunch, after that while eating both continue spending hours looking through all the pictures- edit some for social media etc, the expensive' & delicious food is nothing anymore. 🤐
At that time I said both of you are crazy girls, my cousin just laughing & said this is reality nowdays being in fast paced society, after that I don't care about them anymore when they're interested in new attractive place even though I'm interested I decided to not go & just help them with everything else then leave them to go on their own as long as they sent safe message 😶😅
I was just teen then still enjoying life, my adult life doesn't really start yet, I thought being an adult is really unpleasant. My cousin spending money 🛫 far away for the supposed relaxing holidays, spending again here & there during holidays but doesn't want/even bother to look at the place & enjoying it, spending money for everything instant & quick.
In the end of the day, only 4 or 5 pictures remain from that holidays - posted online but not happy about it either, and then back to work again rushing to make money... 💆
What are we rushing for, like can we slow down on some things, aren't all the technologies meant for make our life easier - saving lives etc? We rushed on every things which makes almost every aspects of our life getting easier but our mental health is decline.

Living in a city with over a million habitants it`s even crazier - I deliberately maintain my pace and observe all those people ... i see fear.. alot of anxiety and frustration in their eyes . I often ask myself if they ever live or do they just operate?
With gaining age & experience i tend to get more aware and mindful and love every step i take on a staircase - Avoid escalators and avoid lifts.
This already began in my childhood as i loved to watch the clouds of milk disolving in my tea cup and all other little attentions to details. I have organized my whole life to this now, and manage my time that don´t have the need to rush - bedtime and waking up hours - Of course this only works when you don`t have kids but i would like to know, if there are any others who can relate to my isolated perception of things in a time lapsed world.

Yes, the world is going more and more crazy. Many people (myself include) don't always take the time to live and enjoy "normalness".
It is like many of us are on run for a race which never end.

My eldest sister, after half of her life since childhood rushing in on everything- always be on top etc & being responsible as the eldest child. After our parents retired, & us the little siblings grew up, she's started to slow down & enjoy herself, even after later she's married having 1 child, she's not rushing anymore, several times already she's being recommended and asked to be promoted even being the leader but she declined all. Year changed but she's persistent.
Now her focus is life balance enough money, the family but more on herself, she's working on government agency but she doesn't want to advance too much/too quick no matter how much the money or the status bcz with that there's more responsibility, time, & her own life.
      I'm really happy for her.
Life is good but if everything is rushed no matter how much money we have it's not enjoyable anymore, so there are time we run, there are time we walk fast pace, there are time we walk slowly & there are time we rest.

I've had to figure out what deserves my spoons and let go of so much because I can't do everything I used to be able to. My mental health is much stronger. It completely threw my life plans off, but at 26 Ive learned information most people don't learn until they're old or they hopefully don't learn because of bad health problems. as a reader, i remember the times when the materials i could avail were few and far in between and ironically enough, the pleasure i got from consuming scarcely was more penetrating than what our current situation provides.
it only solidifies the fact that scarcity creates more value and meaning than hedonism. it creates a want for innovation and thus progress.
for instance, the things i bought with more intent and given much thought, those impact on me is long lasting. i could stare and admire them for far too long.
living life mindfully is a practice, a habit which cultivates the senses for deeper absorption of experiences and other various stimuli.
living slow and generating more pauses and spaces in between develops the mind for thinking and observation. you see more, feel more and think independently mord

I was so grateful and appreciative to be back in my rural tranquil haven. I just hate noise, crowds, confined spaces....I love instead tranquility, serenity, wide open spaces, hardly any people and being in nature.

There is much truth to this, thank you! In my youth I got caught up in the human rat race, living and working in NYC as a fashion illustrator and taking crowded subways to and from work everyday 24 /7 but I made sure I slowed down on the weekends by hanging out at the great art museums around me and going to gorgeous Central Park to connect with nature! Then I raised three kids while having my own small home based business and an art business later on. Now in my elder years I've embraced slow living and live near the sea! Can it be as simple as being a city mouse versus a country mouse? I often wonder in today's even faster paced lifestyle if people do take the time to smell the sweet smell of roses or to smell the salt in the air from the sea while "Earthing" and "grounding" in the sand or green grass in the Spring and Summer?? One of the sweetest things I've experienced is falling asleep for an afternoon nap while listening to the soft gentleness of a summer rain shower! Delicious!

It reminds me of when I played legos as a kid. And I was so immersed in it that time just stopped. Then I heard my mom calling me for dinner. I probably only played for 3 hours but it felt like a life time.

Such a lovely philosophy, which makes me think of Buddhism and Zen cultures. Shame how society's built around everything moving so fast and non stop, because people can miss out on a great deal by going quickly all the time. Many folks can think of loads of things which are better done quickly, but often the things which are best done slowly and thoughtfully are overlooked, neglected or underappreciated. I learned the hard and slow way, but I'm late to pretty much everything, so I have an excuse haha 😅😝😊
"Better late than never" though hey...

Less get done but more is experienced. And both getting a lot done and experiencing things that go unnoticed are just different way of living. A Buddhist could watch the sun rising all the way until it sets and see nothing but value in that time spent as Someone ells might see a waste of time. It’s all up to you what has value and what does not.

A great book to read about slow living is Tom Hodgkinson's How To Be Idle (Lof der Luiheid). He also wrote another book about slow parenting. Read them slowly :-).
I lost my first job to being too slow and my second job to being too sloppy. I didnt like the work and found a very different and better job. When I got fired from that one I took a lot of time off to pursue a creative goal: making a card game for the ipad (no longer in store, it flopped). And for the past 3 years I have had a new job and worked 3 days per week. Less is invariably more.
Once more I now have a creative project, making a video game. Right now my main goal is to be mentally less distracted and more mindful. This way I can be more productive without the exhaustion or boredom of working too long.

I do not focus on slow living, I focus on the present. That means that you learn to stop the voice in your head that is constantly making observations. Everyone thinks that that voice is me! No, no it isn’t you, it is preventing you from being present. You focus on the present moment intentionally when your mind is being a blabbermouth. It takes a long time to perfect. for me, I was able to do it when I learned to meditate, and I meditated for about five or 10 years, 20 minutes a day. It is the answer to learning this skill. If you are interested in working at it, read the power of now, for me that was the perfect instruction book.

Wish I knew slow living concept before. Lately I have been watching slow living, simplifying life videos a lot. I have lost so much because of hustle culture and hustle concept. I was taught to be on the top of everything. To be top and to be the best. That caused a lots of traumas and unwanted severe anxiety. It was always like rushing, trying to relate and belong and validated. All that did to me is losing almost my marriage because I was chasing and trying to please the world around. I feel sad. How could I not figure that out before? I couldn't, because that was ingrained in me. That's how the society functions, my parents encouraged to be best and put a lot of hard work, please others and achieve big things in life. Alas. All was in vain. I am in a better place in life but I wasted almost 49 years of my life by going after people and things.
