  • As soon as we turn on the radio or television, or scroll through our social media feeds, a rush of tragic events scourges our minds. From pandemics to street violence, from clashes between countries to changes in climate: if we immerse ourselves in these messages long enough, the world becomes a terrible place.
When it’s all doom and gloom out there, one’s view of the outside world tends to be bleak. This video shares a couple of things that might change such bleak views by explaining why the world probably isn’t as terrible as we think, but, at the same time, it actually is.

An old political science professor of mine visited the area I live in the US during the height of the 2016 political hysteria. I took him out to lunch just at a typical burger restaurant to catch up. When we got there we ordered our food like normal and sat down and the first thing he said was "you know, it's sometimes very hard where I live to remember that people don't hate each other as much as the news says, but that girls smile and kindness really helped", it never even occurred to me, but my professor was an older white man, and the woman who took our order was a young black girl. It always stuck with me how the simple warmness and smile of that young girl moved him so much, to remind him that the world isn't always so bad as it seems when you're so hooked into the political / news world like he was.

Sure, nobody knew where it was going, but I figured the important details would find their way to me. I've noticed that many UK newspapers frequently use the word 'fear' somewhere on their front pages, but realistically, what do I have to be scared about on a day to day level? Very little.

Look at this comment field here; The original poster has cut down on social media and he's here to tell you. He also doesn't give a flying fuck if he lives or dies, total badass right here. We got the guy (sentientpower) agreeing "spot on mate!" (is he also scottish?), he needs to feel included (echochamber), he's just looking to agree with people. We got the guy (Asherah 1147) going "you know you're doing what you say not to do right", the guy letting people know they're not so smart, so he can feel smart, he also talks about not wasting his time arguing on here, yet uses his time ironically doing something (ranting about people on YT) that shows he's in too deep (in this shit), in other words he's fucked and social media has taken his soul already. Then we got Jaapst, who's commenting "go away", he's angry, bitter, and he's exemplifying letting his ego lash out by being triggered from a guy saying something remotely intelligent, a world of intelligent argument is his worst nightmare. Then we got Freddy, he's matter but doesn't matter... I'm gonna be honest here what the fuck is he even saying right? None of us know. He's the guy who randomly comments something, and we can't quite figure out, is he lonely? is he trying to say something profound? or, is he in fact...... just a lost spanish guy? Then sentient power again , intellectually correcting him, he needs to feel like he knows something and he's about to let you know he knows shit, which is that in fact, you are actually the universe itself (hey I'm not disagreeing). Who did I forget. Yes, then we got me, Dezzyx, some bored asshole with way too much time on his hands writing this.

Human life is cosmically meaningless we exist in an indifferent universe, perhaps even a “multiverse,” subjected to blind and purposeless natural forces, in the absence of cosmic meaning, only “terrestrial” meaning remains.

@@sentientpower I am not too sure if it is a mistake for man to think like you say, I am also not sure what you mean by natural (in all sense, not just instinctive, inborn?). Aside from this, with respect to questioning "Who Am I" I don't think all humans question it in the same way and what I mean by this, at a "more conscientious deeper level" like some of us do (including myself), I think sociocultural beliefs (e.i. religion) play also a big role in it. In regards to the "Oneness" you are referring I would agree with you, based on what we know I believe we are made out of the same stuff (e.i. star dust) our universe is made out of, and therefore we are connected, and interdependent at the same time. This idea plays its role in the way "I personally" find purpose and meaning in my life.

As much as I like this channel, this video doesn't agree with me.
While I agree that mass media news and social media itself cannot be trusted; there is still a massive amount of suffering out there. And that suffering is never going to change or go away. Make no mistake; terrible things are taking place as we speak.
The only silver lining is that a lot of good, love and happiness is also taking place as well. The Buddhist approach to this; is to go beyond the suffering and accept it as a part of life.
Being constantly aware of suffering will drive you insane with depression, grief and paranoia. It will not help you spread good karma, nor will it bring more good/happiness into this world. Good leads to good, happiness to happiness; its a state of mind you must learn to control at will to be the best being you can be; its hard work, and not easy.
In a nutshell; we must never ignore, shut out or shun suffering. But we must never give in to the negativity to the point we become vessels of misery, fear and hate in the world.

but most of us aren't good with controlling our emotions, so I think it's a baby step. minimize your news consumption, spend time with yourself...learn to see positive side of the world...and eventually at some point you'll be ready to accept suffering without getting distressed or hostile.

This also makes the assumption though that watching the news makes one well informed and not just well propagandized. The news is nearly always given from a bent of fear mongering, sensationalizing, exaggerating, and sometimes outright fabrication. Avoiding this doesn't necessarily mean one is turning a blind eye to suffering, it simply means you're making the choice not to view world events through the distorted lens of fear, anxiety, and delusion.

People like you just want to crawl in a hole and pretend everything is fine. When your next door neighbour dies of coronavirus; is that merely an exaggeration to you? Get real.
And yes; there is an incredible amount of suffering in this world. The fact that we ignore half of it is a psychological phenomenon; a mental trick we do because the stress of it would literally kill us. That does not mean it isn't real, or that it should be ignored.

Many good points which I agree with and have known and practiced. But....there are "bad" things that are ommitted from the news to keep people ignorant; and "bad" things that are true and so terribly horrendous that we are left with a sense of righteous anger or hopelessness, or which people may avoid or deny to avoid mental anguish. So there's a fine line to discerning truth, avoiding it, denying it, and being complicit toward injustice we feel hopeless to change, or taking action on things where our voice and action can make a difference, even if to ease our own mental anguish. Taking a walk in nature, and looking toward the good in the world will help balance and strengthen us in taking right action. It is our responsibility as good global citizens.

  • @ctc.s8945
    @ctc.s8945 2 года назад +4

It’s all about balance. This is one of the rare Einzelgänger’s videos I have critique on. He’s trying to purvey the practice of “withdrawing oneself to see the bigger picture” or “stoicism” in short, which I generally agree with and practice, but the method of presentation makes it seem that everything the media portrays is overdramatised, attention-seeking and irrelevant. While the world has a way of repeating itself, it doesn’t mean that we should not care or keep abreast of the eventualities around us. He spoke of the imminence of world war 3 for example. Of course we should not hyper focus on and worry over the rhetoric. The necessity of reporting on that would be to warn humankind of how it might come about and minimise as much suffering as possible.
It is alright to keep ourselves informed, and media coverage is necessary. The key here is to find balance and detach yourself enough from events to maintain a healthy mind whilst noting reality, regardless of how harsh it may be, and the fact that what will happen will happen. Easier said than done, however.

I don't know if I interpreted it right but if this is a suggestion to disconnect completely from the news or that most of the cases it's useless I can't agree, if they were used to show bad and good things in balance or focusing on solutions and not the problems themselves, then they would be completely useful. Also, when we face facts like climate change, with decades of studies showing what expect us, we can't simply ignore the fact, there must be at least some appeal because it affects us all and it's not just more of the same. The point raised here should go beyond “too many bad news are bad for us and our perception of the world.”
We could only look at the bad or the good, or nothing at all…we would still fail to get a realistic perception of the world.
There are plenty bad news daily, and plenty great news. They are intertwined. There are no bad news in hell nor great news in heaven. We live in a world where both coexist and we should all individually assess how much we need to know (rather than just consuming what media outlets have decided is more profitable) let go of what we cannot change (at least for now) and focus on where we can make a difference.
This is also a practice we should implement with everything we consume, whether it’s music, movies, social media, RUclips videos, food, people, etc.
Neither ignoring the news or overconsuming it is benefiting us. Both can lead to cynicism.
But managing our energy, educating ourselves on what we are truly curious about, building a healthy relationship with all content type, and learning how to best contribute to “the solutions” can fill our cup!
