    Just watched your video on your daughter's car. Searched and found this. As I see this the question was will zinc damage my cat. Your answer seems to be that it can if it gets there. I use high zinc and phosphorus oils often and was actually led to believe it was the phosphorus that did the damage. Video is okay but I find the answer evasive.

    Glad I found this quick info. I was just watching a 25 minute video of Mr. Vizard talking about Oil Extreme. I've seen other products as well that are zinc alternatives intended to "protect cats". There's two things I was thinking about for my built 5.0 that's still flat tappet. One the reality that it has a cat to begin with from the factory and part of what the smog pump does.. and is flat tappet from an era of higher zinc. but my concern with using something to replace zinc is the potential lubricity of an additive. I know that with flat tappet it's better to run conventional than synthetic due to the lifters needing to spin.. I was just "high flow" cat shopping and was doing the chicken dance... people talking about it getting past rings but this was a missing link to the education. I believe in running my emissions equipment.. but it's mostly for myself and my passengers too.. same reason why I wear respirators.. I think we get an unfair rep that we just want to pollute the planet and I think a lot of people will toss out cats ( for 1% power? ) or go back to carb as simple as even old EFI can be. They can use a smart phone but dont bother learning a circuit board lol and bury their head in the sand. I was even to the point where in building my exhaust where It was going to be ... Cats, X pipe, Thrush welded, that my thinking was I should clamp the cat instead of welding it depending on what oil. I did intend to stick with driven anyway so it's good to know everything is A-OK. I am breaking my 306 in with BR30 soon.

    I have been wanting to put ZDDP oil in my 02 GMC Sierra for a while but the myth has stopped me so far. My truck (5.3 L) has 317K on the engine but burns less than 1 quart in 5K miles so now I am going with the ZDDP to hopefully reach 500K in this awesome work truck! Thanks!!!!

    I remember when clogged catalytic converters we're common back in the1980s and 90s. People would buy what they called "catalytic converter test pipes, to replace their catalytic converter when it clogged up. We had to do it. The Buick we had lost so much power when it clogged, that it couldn't get up a steep hill. As soon as we replaced the cat with the so called test pipe, it had tons of power again.

    High Quality Engine oil do has high amounts of ZDDP. May be combined with fatty acids for better protection. Evaporation of oil does not relate to ZDDP - it is a status of the engine. If oil is consumed due to wear of piston rings - oil will burn as well as ZDDP in the combustion chamber and that will result in solid particles in the exhaust and poisoning your cat.

    The Porsche 993 series 911s from 1994 through 1998 had a production fill of 10W-40 Mobil 1. (yes the 993 3.6l had CATs). The M1 formulation of that day had approximately 1,700PPM ZDDP - ZINC. .. Fast forward to year 2024 what to do? .. The M1 10W-40 or the M1 15W-50 formulation has much less ZDDP,,, in the range of 1,200 PPM.. What to do?

    On the farm my dad always used the tractor diesel oil in all his in his vehicles, but when the cars started getting cat converters it would poison the cat converters in his Oldsmobile. After the second cat the dealer asked what kind of oil he was using, and then introduced us to the term ZDDP. (The dealer had actually sent the cat in for analysis) Cats are expensive, don't take chances and use oil that you're suppose to.

    Think about this too - cars have had cats since 1975. They had high zinc/phosphorous oil up until 1996 or so. So why all of a sudden after 20+ years was it an issue? Doesn't add up. I've seen more cats killed by rich running than by anything to do with zinc or phos. Even though flat tappet camshafts NEED the extra zinc, roller cams benefit too.

    I drive a 1979 Buick with 3.8 V6 and use Valvoline Racing Oil 20W50 and the car still has to pass state emission test. So I am hoping the catalytic convertor will not be ruined. The engine is not using oil as far as I can tell. Just leaks a bit. Oil is changed every 800 to 1500 miles.

    • @HiTechOilCo
      @HiTechOilCo 4 месяца назад +1

      A 1979 Buick would be better off with a 5W-30 or 10W-30 oil viscosity. This will improve fuel economy, reduce engine wear, increase power and throttle response. Racing oils are not meant for street cars. Why change the oil so frequently? That's causing dry starts after every oil change, allowing metal to metal wear to occur, robbing many miles of life from the engine. It's also tossing out good oil and that's expensive. - 30 year independent AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants Dealer.

  • @flinch622
    @flinch622 Год назад

    I have an early tacoma. Faithful oil changes every 5k miles, and for the last ten years... add zddp to every oil change. Why? Its an overhead cam design, and bucket/shim setups also face a rsk of metal wiping metal if film thickness fails. Result? Valvetrain is noticeably quieter with it vs without. Its old enough now it might be happier with 4k mile oil changes, but the cat is still going strong, mileage like new, and power as well.
    But the motor oil market has a serious, major problem: where do we go to get actual wear resistance values instead of marketing claims? Here's some math derived from a 70's era v-8 I receantly cam swapped, which showed old lifters burnished pattern about 0.080" wide [0.050" from the edges]. For starters, what to assume for high pressure area that would make contact if oil failed? Easy answer was square 0.080 x 0.080 = 0.0064"sq. Next up, forces: as tested: [new] valve springs are 330lb at 0.500" lift. Multiply backwards using rocker numbers: 330 x 1.5 = 495 lbs force. Transfer isn't perfect so I gave a generous adjustment of 98.5%... 487 lbs force. Divide by [estimated] apply area of 0.0064" calculated earlier and oil film on my lifters are possibly putting up with 76,183 psi in operation. [Side note: does that value suggest why most "break-in" oils completely suck???]. So there's my floor. Add a 15% safety margin, and I am looking for an oil with 87,000 psi or better wear protection. I know the chemists formulating oils must at some point have this analysis done, but WHERE are the numbers? Somebody has them. The schmuck at the auto parts store sure won't know. and half have never touched the math I just showed..

    Why is diesel engine oil different formulation? Is the a absence of a gasoline type of catalytic converter allow different formulation of oil with more engine protection additives with out damage to the emission systems? I have been told that a flat tapper engine requires protection form oil additives to limit wear. Did the reformulation of oil usher in roller camshaft use on a larger scale because of premature cam wear failure? What kind of oil should my 1973 Big Block LS4 Corvette be using for the protection of the camshaft?

    Hi Lake. It's funny... I've been experimenting on some vehicles w higher zddp... Like in the 1600ppm range and so far no cat problems. If it does damage one, it will b worth the experiment to know for sure and for the extra wear protection on a motor. But here's my question.... I actually use mobil1 20/50 v twin motorcycle in a car without a cat. It has one of the best additive packages I've seen. It has the same Moly as other Mobil 1's and a lot of boron. Approaching 300 ppm. The zddp is around 1600. Aside from cat issues, this is one of the best oils I've seen on paper and can't see why it's not ok. I'm wonder what the base oils r... If they r group 4 and 5. It also has a high 20.8 viscosity and really good high temp performance and anti shear. The only thing I'm wondering, is that it has around 2200 calcium. Is that too much where it would counter the zddp and boron/moly? Or would u still expect it to b a really good anti wear and also a good cleaner. That film strength too.... Seems really good. Just that calcium question that's haunting me. And I do wonder about the base oils and what group they r. Any light u could shed on those questions and what u think of the quality of that oil, would b very appreciated. Thanks so much!

    I have an 86 dodge ram with a 318 LA engine flat tappets .
    I just got the truck and gave it its first oil change and added a quart of STP ZDDP Zinc additive with some SAE 10w-30 conventional oil.
    Is this sufficient enough to protect the lifters / cam or should I use a high zinc oil and just eliminate adding the STP additive ?

      ZDDP can also help with piston wear and ring lands, but as you stated the car is new and newer designs generally have reduced metal on metal contact and friction like reduced spring pressures and more accurate machining tolerances.

    Your assumption is based on NEW catalytic converters being the same as OLD converters. I'm guessing there have been improvements over the years, knowing that EPA standards have gotten tougher. Another issue with diesel oils is their higher detergent levels, which reportedly can "over clean" cylinder walls in a gas engine, reducing the piston ring/cylinder seal, which could cause reduced compression and blowby.

    • @wydopnthrtl
      @wydopnthrtl 4 года назад +3

      Well.... his point is valid. If its NOT getting past the rings and/or valve seal then the cats are not seeing the situation. So IMO it just depends on the engines oil consumption rate.

    • @scottwheaton9689
      @scottwheaton9689 2 года назад +1

      Zddp never clogs oil passages journals etc, it was likely oils in the past with high graphite & or moly that known to clog an oil filter when not changed on a regular basis like 3k-5k miles.
