    Today Ben dives into the world of Pixar to discuss why Woody in Toy Story has holster but, not gun. Did Andy just lose it? Did Al not know Woody was supposed to have it? Does it stand for something more?

    I love this theory because it fits the character of Woody so well. It proves that he is a non-violent, responsible and confident who tries to keep the peace any way he can. And no, Ben, Woody didn't intentionally knock Buzz out the window. He tried to trap him behind Andy's desk. And even Woody does some not-so-nice things in Toy Story 1, he definitely comes of age in the film. He puts Buzz's needs before his own and he teaches Sid a lesson in a non-violent (albeit childhood-mauling) way.

    So basically, Woody is a character who enforces the law without the use of a gun... but Woody _the toy,_ who knew nothing of the original Woody from the show, gets played with like a stereotypical cowboy which inevitably means using a gun. He adopted that from Andy's playstyle.
    The "Reach for the sky" thing is probably his catchphrase specifically _because_ he doesn't use a gun.

  • @SgtSupaman
    @SgtSupaman Год назад +135

    If this is like the short, I have to reiterate that Woody is pretty violently angry in the first movie and never seems to intentionally choose a less-violent path. He just tends to use stealth and tricks to achieve his ends. Though that may only be due to the fact that his opponents are pretty much always either humans or bigger/stronger toys.

    • @SgtSupaman
      @SgtSupaman Год назад +11

      Yep, this video did come to the same basic conclusion as the short, though y'all did address Woody's obvious lack of hesitance toward violence in the first movie. I don't think he really changed all that much over the course of the rest of the movies, though. As I said, his opponents were ones that he couldn't win against in a violent confrontation, so he used his smarts to beat them. There's nothing particularly noble about adjusting strategies to beat someone in a different way when you already know violence will fail.

      Sure thats true but the woody we know isn’t the same person as the woody from woody’s round up and because he had never come into contact with the show as a toy before the second film it could be possible that wood didn’t end up with the same personality as he has in the show

    • @SgtSupaman
      @SgtSupaman Год назад +8

      @@IceBot360G , that's a good point, but it seems like the personality they are based on (if one exists) is biologically(?) programmed into them. Buzz didn't know about any shows or movies about him, but he, and every other Buzz toy, already know all about Star Command and Zurg, and they all act the same way. Perhaps this Woody, having been in Andy's family so long, simply diverged far enough from his original personality by accepting his job as a toy (like how Andy's Buzz differs from the other Buzz toys).

  • @blakdeth

    If this theory is true, the reason that a gun toy exists in the line up at all is because it's a 60s franchise. Before the 80s a lot of toy designs were repurposed for various things. There was a tin star trek toy gun that was the same design as other older toy guns, just with a layer of paint to look spacey. Whatever toy company had the license for woody's roundup probably knew the very basics of the show and said "he's a cowboy, use one of our gun toys and put his name on the box"

    • @DJofSparta

    Reason I think Woody's hostler is empty is because
    A: toy story is meant for kids and for older people but they thought if guns were present inside the movie it would possibly give kids the wrong and potentially harmful idea,

    I'm going to speculate that the gun belonged to another planned character that was going to be in the show before it was cancelled. If you look at the gun right before Jessie shoots it there's the word cowboy on it. So there's a missing cowboy probably turned gunslinger character from the Woody's Roundup show that they at least made a prototype gun for. Maybe they planned to make him Woody's brother or someone that was the town's unofficial law keeper before he went bad? Woody didn't want to have the townsfolk afraid of him so he practices law without a gun but wears a holster to remind the bad guys that he doesn't wear a gun by choice. He could but he chooses not and instead uses his wit against them. 🤷🏾‍♀️

    (I also watched the earlier video, unsure I commented at the time.) Carrying an empty holster wouldn't be very smart. I think Andy Taylor didn't carry one, though he let Barney carry an empty gun, which is even worse.
    My first thought when I began watching the earlier video was that the Woody doll would have been sold with a kid-sized toy gun -- the kid would have Woody's gun; Woody wouldn't. But the footage of the marionettes goes against that idea.
    I think Jessie is a trick shooter (like Annie Oakley), so she _should_ have a gun. And Bullseye is Jessie's horse, isn't he, hence the name? Would the Jessie and Bullseye dolls have been sold together?

    Woody not carrying a gun may also be an homage to the Jimmy Stewart movie "Destry Rides Again" in which the title character, Tom Destry Jr. played by Jimmy Stewart, refuses to carry a gun as sheriff. O-O

    I feel like showing only the feet of the humans was an artistic choice because it gives a better perspective of what it’s like through the eyes of the toys. It wasn’t a limitation.

    • @JosephDavies

      It's an artistic choice that was made from a very specific limitation.
      Many aspects of the film work really well in tandem due to the choices made. That's a big part of why it's held up.

    As you have said... Woody comes from the 1950s, and the makers may have omitted the gun for reasons like: it's a small chokeable object that can be easily be lost. And it's a long time ago, so accessories like that would be impossible to locate.
    Maybe Andy's father has it???

    Just writing this up because it's the first time I noticed it. In the shot in Toy Story 2 at around 2:55, you can see from the Life magazine cover that Woody, on the show, didn't have a gun in his holster either. This might have been an in-universe decision since it was a show made in the 50s for kids. Just a guess, I haven't finished watching the video yet.

    My first thought was that the original network of the Woody show in-universe did not want to feature a good guy with a gun (or maybe no guns at all) due to strict moral rules in children's entertainment show production of the time.
    My headcanon is that that still applies, but the makers of the tv show made a virtue out of a production restriction and gave Woody the "does not like guns" character trait.

    2:05 So did I. My little brother has a BIN FULL OF TOYS! I had a bin of a similar size, but used it mostly for toy wooden/plastic train tracks(was a big fan of Thomas back then, had costumes and everything)
    7:05 Happened to Leonardo Da Vinci. Funny story, guy was working on a clay mould for casting it into a giant bronze statue of a horse. He had the clay figure done(with many hours of horse anatomy studies) and he had the bronze to do it. What happened? Some army invaded that part of Italy, the Duke of something-or-other used Leo's bronze for cannons, foreign army took over, used Leo's clay horse for, you guessed it: Target Practice. Only remains were rubble that's impossible to recover now...

    My original theory is that he used to but left it behind in the "show" in an older episode that we don't see (we're only shown the final episode, and it was cancelled on a cliffhanger in universe).
    Although maybe it's both. He could have left it behind right before the time depicted in the Gunless Law card.
