Ok, hear me out. Toy Story is actually just a retelling of the 1963 Doctor Who Story "An Unearthly Child".
Both feature characters who dislike each other but must reluctantly come together to escape from a terrible situation they accidentally ended up in while becoming friends by the end.

Whew.... watching this, it puts the line Woody gives Buzz as he's about to lose his grip on the moving truck strap and likely be torn to shreds but Sid's dog has CRAZY extra weight.
"Take care of Andy for me."
That's the line showing how far Woody has come. He thinks his life is over now, this is it, last thing he wants Buzz to do for him is take care of his kid. The scene doesn't last long enough on that to imply that emotional weight, but that just came to me.
And I REALLY HATE how that line works as a mirror in 4, which shouldn't exist!

Despite the fact that Woody’s personality is a lot different in this movie, compared to the sequels. Being more stubborn, immature, wimpy, arrogant, irritable, and paranoid, I still think this is the best incarnation of him, since he’s just so freaking hilarious! Tom Hanks was at the top of his game in this movie. The way he delivers Woody’s sarcastic remarks and frustrated tantrums is just top notch!

I mean the original version of Woody was an insufferable asshole with no redeeming qualities.
As opposed to the Woody we all love who is a petty asshole but it's also completely understandable why he is. He's never really had to be humbled before in his role as the leader of the toys. He's never had to feel insecurity before or see what limitations he has as a toy and as a person. The first movie really gives Woody a wonderful arc as he realizes that there are things he can't do that Buzz can but that's okay.

I really love the scene where Woody admits to Buzz that he’s jealous of him. Considering how he constantly kept hurling insults and threats at Buzz, seeing him witness Buzz admitting the fact that Woody was right about Buzz being a toy the whole time and then telling Buzz that being a toy is a whole lot better than being a space ranger is really sweet. He also reminds Buzz of his special features, like his wings, being able to glow in the dark, his voice box, and his helmet doing “that thing whoosh thing.” He even goes as far to say that he’s the one that should be strapped to Sid’s rocket. That just shows how much he’s grown and finally realises the error of his ways.

I wonder what if in an alternate timeline, the Toy Story version with villainous Woody is the one that's released. In which Woody gets consumed by spite and become the antagonist after being abandoned by Andy in favor of Buzz Lightyear, and instead of befriending Buzz, Woody spends the movie along with the sequels trying to take down the Space Ranger he was replaced with, as he becomes much like Lotso from the third film. Speaking of which,
Do you know that Lotso was originally planned to be in the first Toy Story film, but Pixar had trouble properly animating his fur. So they have to wait for the third film as CGI technology became more advanced.

That is what I loved about Lotso as a villain: He was what Woody could've become. His dark reflection.
So when they came into conflict in TS3, it was almost like Batman having a philosophical debate with Joker.

Also to be fair to the other toys, they were all ready to help Woody aside from Potatohead. Until they saw Buzz’s arm. If my friend was carrying someone else’s body part, I dunno, I’d at least want an explanation. Slinky’s horrified face, while pretty hilarious, is also a little relatable in that situation.
That being said, Toy Story 2 throwing shade at Potatohead for being a jerk in this movie was pretty funny and warranted

They were among the many movies that taught me the power of friendship in love with my dysfunctional childhood, the third one especially teaching me the power of moving on & acceptance about things happening. My childhood was traumatic with many people around me besides my grandmother and uncle, but without these movies I fear I wouldn't have eventually learn what is right and wrong, nor let people in as I do today.

Great video. One thing I have always found fascinating about this movie since watching it in my adulthood is the fact that Woody and Buzz become so close to getting back home on numerous occasions throughout the movie but then things go wrong. Earlier on in the movie, this is due to different views and motives from Woody and Buzz. They have a clear way to get back home which is easily accessible but because one character (typically Buzz) is not in the headspace, they don't take it and they end up in a worse scenario. Woody and Buzz end up in Sid's house because Buzz wanted to go in the rocket (the claw game) and he accepted his fate when Sid successfully grabbed him. Even though the two of them were essentially right next to their owners before this happened and Woody later on tried to pull Buzz out of the rocket (although the aliens interfered with that). Scenarios like this continue to happen as the movie progresses. Buzz would do something that was against Woody's goals but Woody went along with Buzz because he thought that bringing Buzz back was the only way he would be accepted by the other toys. He didn't do it because he cared for Buzz, he did it to try and save face for the mistake he made.
After Woody and Buzz become friends however this changes. There are scenarios where Woody can easily get back home but every time, he sacrifices that in order to save Buzz, which always closes their easy ticket out. Woody for example could have easily just got in the car before it left but he stops to help Buzz, which costs him the car right. Scenarios like this continue for the rest of the climax. Woody is essentially safe to go home, Buzz gets into trouble, Woody goes to help Buzz and then sacrifices his chance to get home. This then ultimately concludes with Woody and Buzz working together to light the rocket and fly into the car, successfully getting them both home safely. Woody could have easily gotten home much more easily while leaving Buzz behind but he instead risked his life to save Buzz, which got them both home in the end. It just goes to show how much Woody had grown throughout the movie. Earlier on, he saw Buzz more as a nuisance, only staying with Buzz because he thought that he couldn't return without Buzz or all the other toys would no longer respect him. By the end however, Woody willingly put himself in danger and gave up his easy road home to save Buzz because he truly befriended Buzz at that point and it paid off for both of them.
I tried to explain this as well as I could and I'm not sure how well I succeeded but I do find it to be a fascinating thing in the movie. There are so many points where the movie could have just ended then and there but because the character's made certain decisions, that does not happen. If you are not familiar with the movie, you never truly know when it is going to end because so many opportunities for Woody and Buzz to get back present themselves but then Woody and Buzz never take them for one reason or another. The way the movie is structured like this really helps to illustrate Woody and Buzz's relationship and how it changes and grows throughout the movie. They both start off as flawed people who do not get along but after a long and dangerous journey, they ultimately become very good friends and better people. It is an excellent tale of how unlikely friendships can form and the movie as a whole holds up extremely well in my opinion.

Wouldn't you do the same after seeing(presumably) that the guy literally tore apart the new guy out of jealousy? Would you still let that psycho in after what he did? What they did there made perfect sense, seeing how that looked like, even if they were his friends before, seeing what kinda monster he'd become\always was inside it makes perfect sense they let the rope go and wouldn't let him in again.

Close enough, but yes, Toy Story 1 is still a classic despite its rough spots and of course shortcomings that came with the time, but that’s ok, cause it’s iconic for a reason, plus I gotta say, if there’s one thing about the original the others discontinued, it’s the dynamic between our heroes, in all the sequels Woody and Buzz get split up for the respective A and B plots, but this is the only one where they actually stick together the whole way through leading to the most iconic moments of the franchise between them.

Toy Story is one of my favorite works of fiction ever precisely because neither party is completely wrong or completely right, they have to trully compromise, understand their faults and the other's viewpoint. So many stories (even today) have a clear bad guy, and even those that don't have a bad guy don't manage to represent their characters in a balanced way, as in an important character might not have bad intentions, but their actions and worldviews are so damaging to what happens in the plot, that you can't say they're as forgivable as Woody.
If anyone noticed, yes, I'm mostly using the grandmother in Encanto as an example. I don't care about her tragic backstory, she has caused so much damage to the others in the family and she realized her mistakes too late in the film for the viewer to believe she really understands her mistakes.

Thank you Rockator for another interesting video. Toy Story will always have a special place in my heart. During the golden era of Disney, I could torture my family with the Lion King up to 3 times a day (according to my grandmother and mother's stories), And I can understand why. My childhood was during a beautiful period where there was no artificial political correctness and the creators simply created beautiful stories (besides the obvious desire to make money xd). Of course, I'm aware that they were based on old fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm, for example, but they were able to include a certain magic in their adaptations that still delights today. Pixar definitely fit into this concept and started using this magic to create wonderful content. Toy Story is not only a graphic miracle created by the animators but also a wonderful story written by the screenwriters, which has been a great delight to this day.
Thank you again for reminding me of this magic in your film. At the time I saw it simply as a good cinematic production, and today I am searching for the deeper messages it carried with it. Greetings to you, from your loyal fan from Poland (I mention this because I wonder how many of your subscribers are also of my nationality :D).

I grew up with Toy Story 1 and 2. While i personally hold 2 more precious, i do agree that this film is the more perfect one as the staple of the franchise. Too bad the 4th one and the Buzz Lightyear film ruined everything

Friendship is always demonized as "the easy, safe theme to go with" from people that don't really get that doing it well is really hard. Friendship is more then just "we like each other let's hang out," it takes work and understanding to maintain, hell, I would argue that maintaining positive friendships is more important then having a romantic one.

As much as I love Don Rickles’ performance, I really can’t stand Mr Potato Head in this movie. He’s such a jerk to Woody throughout the entire movie. Even before Buzz came into the picture! He reprimands Woody for being jealous of Buzz, despite the fact it’s implied that he’s jealous of Woody, as evidenced by this line:
“Of course Woody ain’t worried. He’s been Andy’s favourite, since kindergarten.”

I like to see Woody's development in Toy Story as an older brother learning to accept he is no longer the "house king", and that he has a younger brother now with whom he has to share his stuff (when I re-watched it, it reminded me of a children’s tale I was obsessed with as a kid called «Julius, the House King», in which its main character, a little girl called Lily, had to learn to accept that she was no longer the “house queen” and she had to share with her little brother). 🧡 Also, can we collectively agree the 4th film is just bad fanfiction and not part of the Toy Story canon? :3
    (Great video. ❤)

I know it’s a little redundant the comparison between these two, but if there’s another movie that absolutely nailed the same concept of Toy Story 1, it’d be the scarier than horror animated classic, The Brave Little Toaster, and how it’s such a great tale of facing adversity with a gang of misfits who also go through dire steaks to reach their owner before they move.

I'm going to be honest. I love the first two movies. They are stand alone to me. I truly enjoy Toy Story 3, but I love the choppiness of the animation of the first two. The newer movies look good, too good. Like they're too polished visually for me.

I've always loved Toy Story! It still holds up to this day, being the first ever computer-animated feature movie! 😃 Woody is my favourite of all the characters, since he's tried to keep the toys in place, but soon learns to make a true friend in the one who he thought would replace him. Fantastic stuff! Buzz Lightyear is awesome as well.

Great analysis! I don’t really consider Toy Story 4 as canon. It’s not even following the “you gotta friend in me” like the 3 movies does. Kinda similar to Ralph breaks the internet not really something I consider canon either. I don’t care
    if the reviews are
good, since the story goes against EVERYTHING I loved about Toy Story 1,2,3!!

This movie will always be my favorite childhood favorite animated movie of all time. The message about friendship, and two people (toys per say lol) from 2 different backgrounds both challenge each other, then learning the hard way and work together as a team to escape and learn to respect and rely on each other despite their differences. 🥲
And the story about the early Black Friday Reel of Toy Story when Woody was originally an edgy mean spirited a-hole was all Jeffrey Katzenberg’s decision that it became bad so bad and was not what John Lassater and the Pixar team set out to make that Disney nearly shutdown the Toy Story production, but the Pixar refused to let it happen before their very eyes, and so Disney decided give them 2 weeks to write the story they wanted make, and that’s how we got the finished movie that we all know in love.
This was back when Pixar could take risks, releasing masterpiece after masterpiece, and also back when John Lassater was on the top of his game being a once great influence and inspiration in the animation industry by starting the birth of full length CG 3D animated movies. It saddens me to see what he became these last few years. :(
Anyway, nice video analysis on another childhood movie of mine as always! =D ^^

    @sophieamandaleitontoomey9343 8 месяцев назад +3

A very important aspect of friendship is the ability to call each other when they're wrong and push each other to be better when you need it. Woody and Buzz perfected that. Whether it was the scene where Woody finally admits that it's perfectly understandable as to why Andy would love Buzz, to the scene where Buzz gives Woody a harsh dose of reality of what a horrible life he will have when he goes to Japan, to Woody reiterating how important it is to be with Andy...the amount of moments are just too much to count. The term to infinity and beyond isn't just a catchphrase. It's a solidification of how unbreakable their friendship is and how they will hold hands in a burning incinerator as they die together.
And we don't need to talk about Toy Story 4 and how it ruined all of that. Hopefully we can get a video about the train wreck that movie is.
