The main plot of the movie is fantastic ofc.. but I’ve always loved the smaller things like you mentioned. All the little background details that give you even the tiniest amount of info about how the monster world works are just the best
@@orange_turtle3412good question where does Ted work, I didn't realize how much I wanted that question answered, or is he like Tommy from Martin he somehow has money and nobody knows where he works
Another interesting thing is the writers taking the idea of "that thing you're scared of is more scared of you than you are of it", something I'm sure most people have heard their parents tell them, and working that into the actual plot of the movie by having the monsters literally be more scared of the human children than the children are of them.
Can confirm, we parents tell our children this a lot. Its how I taught my children to not only ignore the spiders living in our house and garden but to be kind to them.
@@RykerJones28That's how my mom helped me and my brother with our fears of the rats. My brother saw one and became really scared of them, and I texted my mom, asking for advice for his fear. She said "that thing you're scared of is more scared than you are of it," and it helped him sooo much.
I absolutely adore the detail that the Abominable snowman was banished. What a natural way of saying Big Foot, the Loch Ness Monster and the Kraken are all real monsters, living with humans after being banished
Of course, you have to wonder WHY they were banished. I mean banishment is for criminals so they would have to have done something? For all we know Big Foot could have been a serial killer in the monster world.
Funny thing I noticed- in Monster’s University, the dean tells Sully that a boy afraid of snakes wouldn’t scream at a roar, they would cry. And in Monsters Inc, Boo is afraid of Randall (a reptile) which is why she cries instead of screams at Sully’s roar
One of the funniest scenes to me is the one where Sully thinks Boo is going through the trash cube compactor and he keeps fainting at every step of the process. The way he faints will always send meee
What's interesting when you consider Mike's arc in Monsters University is that Mike was essentially rejected socially for not being scary but with the new laugh-centric energy model his skills must definitely be valued and appreciated more than ever before, especially since he's a hard worker and studies/cultivates proper technique (could apply that to being funny).
@@YouKnowImOnMyPeriodYah The story in MU is so good!!! I think the weakest part of the movie was the architecture/ environmental design. Monsters Inc was so creative and wacky, but MU mostly just put spikes on things and called it a day, so it wasn't nearly as visually stunning. I love it for the script and acting, but I wish we could get a remake with the same attention to detail that the original had.
Y'all definitely won't know this beforehand, but during the trash compactor scene, there were two agents searching for traces of human with something that clicks like a geiger counter. When these two saw Sully, they instantly abandoned their jobs to ask for his autograph. What you might not realize is the fact that the geiger counter were clicking wildly when it was directed as Sully, but the agents were too lost in their fangirling that they didn't even notice it (they even turned it off!). I rewatched the movie not too long ago, years after I last rewatched it, and the only reason I noticed this was because I'm studying nuclear engineering, so geiger counter clicks pretty much incites a pavlovian response from me. I wouldn't've been able to discern it otherwise.
Considering that we find out that the CDA knew all along that humans weren't dangerous but they still have geiger counters to detect human stuff, it is entirely possible that all scarers would trip them do to their time in the human world so these agents were actually not worried about it to begin with.
That is so awesome! btw not a nuclear engineer myself but I just recently became aware of the Palo Verde Generating Station in Arizona and now I'm the biggest fan of nuclear ever.
One brilliant part about the movie often understated is how it disarms the idea of monsters. If you were of the age where you actually believed monsters might be in your closet (like I was when I saw this movie for the first time), seeing that monsters are actually scared of kids and will go away if you no longer get scared is a really encouraging and comforting thought for imaginative kids.
I was 1 when this movie came out, so growing up obsessively watching and rewatching this movie completely recontextualized any fear of monsters in the closet I might have grown up with otherwise. Instead I grew up afraid a T Rex or velociraptor would break through my window because I equally obsessively watched Jurassic Park. A problem replaced with another problem 🤣
For monsters university they were gonna make it that their rival starts all the way in elementary school but decided not to do that and go for what you said
In argentina we have that phrase to say something we should had learned in the past, because everything gets teached at 4th grade (9-10 yo) here aparently.
22:37 One of my favourites is when he goes: “that thing is a killing machine!” And it cuts to boo twirling around like: “La La La La” It cracks me up 😁
Why didn’t you mentioned how Waternoose’s design works perfectly as both “friendly grandfather” and “spider beast” for when his true nature is revealed and he’s chasing Boo
And it also somewhat hints that Waternoose is seriously experienced with children that at this point, he didn't flinch, let alone outwardly scared when handling her. It's like he had once been a scare worker as well, or maybe him being the one that gotten first contact, where the entire scaring concept first grew as an idea.
@standard-carrier-wo-chan , it's even more telling considering that monsters in this universe believe children to be toxic. One would think that he'd be afraid to touch them, or at least skeptical even after Mike explains everything to him. But no, he's calm and understanding with it.
One of my favorite things about this movie is how all of the character designs are multipurpose. Sully and Waternoose genuinely look friendly and comforting when they’re just hanging out or being normal, but get genuinely terrifying when they are trying to be. Randall can be pretty intimidating with his unique set of powers, but his slick and calculated movements also shows his calculating and sleazy side. Mike and a few other “helper” monsters are designed to be otherworldly, but “normal” enough to for us to be able to contrast them with the “scarers”, to show what ordinary monsters look like. Even Celia, who was obviously just designed to make a more feminine looking monster, has the ability to crank up her intimidation factor during her “woman spurned” scene due to her Medusa hair. When I was younger, I was more scared of her in that scene than Randall.
This makes me feel a little sad, because Disney and Pixar seem like they have lost that magic they had. I hope they can regain the gift of a magical experience
I think so much of it has been from the seeming obsession with sequels upon sequels all to milk popular IPs for toy revenue. Like as much as I crave more monsters inc content, MI was so well rounded and fleshed out that it really doesnt need a sequel. They tried to do something with monsters at work, but I feel that it just takes away from the original movie and thus try my best to forget it exists. I truely wish that the industry as a whole could move back more to producing complete stories in single movies instead of relying on sequels to sell interest.
This movie is so good that Pixar has desperately tried and failed to recapture it. Unfortunately for them, they’re no longer the creative and daring studio they were when they made this film and they can make the mediocre MU and forgettable monsters at work. But they will never recreate what Monsters Inc was able to make again.
I agree! I used to watch this movie all the time, as a kid. Everything about it works from the humour, to the characters, to the world-building, to the villains! *Chef’s kiss!* 👌
Same I remember watching this growing up and just being enamored and blown away by it. Now that I'm a proper working adult it becomes even more brilliant cuz you realize they're just like us and there's a bunch of small details you probably didn't notice on first watch and those small details and jokes just make the movie from great to absolutely amazing
I believe the "fourth grade" line was probably Mike was being boastful and exaggerated. I could easily see Sulley saying "we didn't even know each other in the fourth grade".
I've been watching Monsters University basically on repeat, and hearing you flesh out Monsters Inc. made me realize a detail I've missed. In M.U Dean Hardscrabble told Sully that his roar wouldn't make a child scream it would make them cry, and in the scene in M.I. when Sully scares the robot and Boo in the simulator, he uses the same face expression and roar, which makes Boo cries from fear and she doesn't scream. I just thought this detail was pretty cool, and that the writers for both movies had a great idea and executed it perfectly. :)
Monsters Inc’s writing is SO UNDERRATED, I’m so glad to see someone else talk about it. It seems that everyone just remembers it for being very funny and the emotional scenes (which are valid as those parts are amazing as well) but the writing itself and the characters are so, so solid. Everything makes sense and all partes intertwine with each other, it’s so clever. Waternoose is a perfect example of how to do a realistic twist villain! And Sully and Mike’s friendship feels so real that their dialogue doesn’t even feel like it’s from a family movie sometimes.
Also love that Waternoose could shift from being such a warm and fatherly figure to such an intimidating person without changing his appearance or anything
Idk I would still trust him if randel was the only villain in the movie and the laughing energy was still used well. Like I sorta feel bad for him, he really had the world in his hands due to his family's energy revolution 🙁
Thats a good explanation, they saw each other in fourth grade and realized Sully looked at Mike in a jealous way, but then went to different schools and kind of forgot about each other, but later re-remembered that they already saw each other in fourth grade.
I always got the feeling between his MI personality and being constantly overlooked or nearly forgotten in MU, he probably moved a lot as a kid. That's why he seemed closer with the adults than the kids his own age even in college. Sure you could say it's because he was a nerd, but I feel like part of the reason the factory caught his attention so strongly was the team aspect of it. And if he was moving a lot as a kid, that one goal of becoming a scarer being like the big leagues in their world (they even had trading cards) was what drove him to study so hard. So I like to think he did meet Sully at one point and was excited to see him again only to realize the guy doesn't remember him and he only thought Sully was cool because his dad was, but they learned after moving in together that Sully was jealous of him because he did so much better in school back then. And he still did here in college.
The formula of taking things that children think about but seem silly to adults seriously, is a great way to come up with original stories. You're harnessing the raw unbounded creativity of children's minds and giving it a rational structure and depth that appeals to all ages. Genius really.
14:12 it is also the same exact room where Water noose is revealed to be the villain! A very subtle thing in this movie. EVERY major scene with water noose is in that room. Play just those three scenes of waternoose in that room and you will get his entire motivation, appreciation of Sulley, betrayal of Sulley, and his ultimate comeuppance.
Monster Inc is just pure comedy gold! To be fair with the fart gun joke in Despicable Me, at least it sets up that Dr Nefario sometimes doesn’t hear well given instructions, like with the Cooky robots joke later in the movie.
There are toilets shown in this movie, but there are no crude jokes about it for example, the writing was really well written to keep it appropriate for everyone.
@@adamcuneo7189 Sure there was no fart jokes but Mike had an ball busting joke and a burping joke in the movie and a lot of people consider those type of jokes lowbrow too just like fart jokes.
@@mjangelvortex I get your opinion on the ball-busting joke, but the burp joke is pretty clever via being both a traditional "haha burp funny", and simultaneously making fun of "haha burp funny" via having Mike's highly well rehersed and clever comedy routine completely fly over the kid's head, before he just goes "screw it" and makes a low-brow burp joke to get the laughter energy
@@EthanFazel I think that joke also worked because the microphone is established to have an echo within the room, so he isn't just burping, but actually using the reverb to power up the burp's noise to an unprecedented (but more importantly unexpected) level.
As someone said in the making of documentary, they had the concept of monsters in the closet scaring kids but weren’t sure how to make that into a feature film. But the writers were all having there own kids at that time and they realised that the essence of the story should be about a man becoming a father.
Something that I’m a bit upset by you not mentioning is how similar Mike was to Randal and Waternoose in the beginning. By that, I mean the fact that all 3 of them are trying to take shortcuts in order to solve their problem. However, unlike Randal or Waternoose, Mike comes to the realization that shortcuts aren’t always the best way to go about things
I literally screamed "YES! FINALLY!" when you mentioned the walk to work is the best scene. I've been stewing on that for like a year thinking about how beautifully and diegetically it exposits and exposes us to the characters and world. And you said everything I wanted to spread and more! You're doing the lord's work, keep it up!
The opening sequence with the doors also serves to set the tone of the movie. Originally, it just opened with the beginning of the movie, the scare stimulator, but Pixar felt it was too dark. Colorful drawings of doors bouncing around to an upbeat instrumental song does a lot to soften how scary the scare simulator starts out.
So... How did Mike get down the mountain again if Scully used all the stuff in the cave to build a sled? I personally choose to believe that Mike make himself the center of a literal snowball.
There's a game called Monsters Inc: Scare Island 2001) whereby Mike would turn himself into a ball so it really wouldn't put it past anyone to imagine that he just rolled all the way down. Especially also within the film he discusses how he "was the ball"
He didnt use them all. You can see as Sully is pushing his sleigh out of the cave, he used hardly any of the supplies. I like to think for multiple reasons. 1. He knows Mike couldnt cope with being banished and after he calms down, realises he is going back to monster world and will want to go back too. 2. Doesnt want to take everything from the snowman as he was very helpful, giving shelter and food. 3 He knows how truly capable Mike is on his own.
I grew up with the VHS version with the bloopers during the end credits. It actually takes up 95% of the credits, and is one of the few movies I watched all the way to the end of the credits back in the day.
Holy crap. A 50-minute video essay on what was my favorite film of all time before I was 11. I definitely need to watch this. School bites. But, nonetheless, well-done sir! Looking like high-quality content as always! Keep it up! First edit: I will definitely edit this comment once I finish watching this
Also a nice detail I didn't notice until several watches is that Roz is so up tight about Mike filing his paperwork because she's handling it all. It's a funny bit when Roz slams the shutter on Mike's hands, but it also subtly hints that when Mike asks for a door Randall was using, Roz is checking her records (which are probably very strictly detailed) right then and there to find out why Randall had a door when he shouldn't even be using it, especially in the off-hours. It also explains the running joke about her asking if Mike filed his paperwork on time or correctly: she needs him to do his job right so she can do hers right. It barely adds to anything, but it's a great detail that I just wanted to share.
My favorite scene is when Mike and Sulley are hiding from Randall in the bathroom, and Randall starts punching open the stalls. The music in that scene was my favorite too.
Wow, now I feel pretty stupid knowing I am 31 years old and just realizing that Randall and Waternoose weren't as oblivious as I thought in the two scenes (Randall walking out of scare floor sneezing and Waternoose with the "bring your obscure relative to work day"). Both going with the situation to not blow their cover. Well played there man - first RUclipsr I have seen to actually point that out.
Pete Doctor, the director of this would go on to direct Up, Inside Out, and Soul. Dude’s criminally underrated as a figure in animation. We know his work, but I feel his name should be up there with Brad Bird
One thing I loved about the george scene where he just throws his friend into the human door, is that he and everyone else is still under the impression that humans are toxic, so he was so unwilling to have another 2319 incident that he just sent his friend to die in the monster world equivalent of a toxic wasteland
i was so obsessed with this movie as a kid!!! i literally memorized the script and forced my parents listen to me talk about it for hours. i'm so glad someone else understands how good it is lol
Monsters Incorporated is a timeless masterpiece. One thing that always stuck with me was the soundtrack, it is perfect. It's impressive that Monsters Incorporated was Pixar's first big hit, and the following year in 2004 they released Finding Nemo, which is debatably better. From 1999 to 2005 Pixar was killing it with classic after classic. I feel very lucky to have grown up as a kid watching Pixar movies and even enjoy them as an adult. I never understood all the adult aspects and themes that are apart of Pixar films, and that is why Pixar movies are so special because children, teens & adults can all appreciate each movie in their own way.
Even when I was 5 years old I would watch this movie everyday and cry when sully left boo. It’s like kids somehow sense the beauty of the art without understanding it.
I’ve always believed children understand more than we expect them to-it was certainly my experience, at least. I still remember the frustration of being underestimated by adults at a very young age. So, a 5-year-old following along with something like this doesn’t surprise me at all.
@@azuroslazuli6948I have 3 kids. I treat then like they are very smart because they are. They understand so much and treating them like they are smart makes them even more brilliant
I always did feel it was the best. I love Monsters University too, because it has the amazing message that disabled people can achieve their potential even if their potential isn't exactly what they always dreamed of doing
Using Randall to make Mr. Waternoose's twist more shocking is one of Pixar's most genius moves and I'm surprised they didn't do it in other movies. Also, another clue of his villainy is that his name is spelled "noose" even though it's pronounced "news".
47:23 I love how Celia uses the scare record against Randall. What was once his main motivation becomes a mere inconvenience to him now that the truth is all revealed. Contrast that with the scene where he overtakes Sulley for a few seconds, it's like night and day. 37:09 And my mind is blown after all these years about Mr Waternoose knowing that was Boo in that costume all along! He brought up the scare demonstration in that moment, because he WANTED Mike and Sulley to bring Boo straight to him, and it worked like a charm! He ignored what Sully was trying to tell him in that scene because he WANTED Sulley's roar to scare Boo and get her to reveal herself in a way that wouldn't imply he already knew she was there, which would ruin the plan! Why else would Randall have been there, ready to open the banishment door?! He set the trap in plain sight using an organic conversation with Sulley from earlier that was genuine, and was also set up organically by the terrible recruits at the beginning! He switched intentions right in front of us and we had no idea! Then Mike and Sulley trap him in the same place that he trapped them! That's genius storytelling!!!🤯🤯🤯
What amazed me a lot was realizing the foreshadowing to the laughter energy, when mike wazowski got hurt when Boo Sully and Mike were hiding her in their house. Where when she cried the lights flickered and such, but when she giggled it overloaded the system so much every single apartment in the complex surged and power went dead
One thing I appreciate about this movie more than any other media that has "the human world but "insert property" is different" is how grounded the story was. Too many movies like that make a world where your supposed to feel immersed into it, but throw you into wonderland because they need to bash over your head that it's animated in a world that's clearly different. Waternoose is a businessman, and he sees children as a resource. He recognizes the growing population and the limits of his workers doing one-off scares, but finds out that he could abuse that resource artificially to produce more in a day than his best of the best could make in a month. He's a businessman down to the fact that he disassociates feelings and pain over profit and helping the modern world, even to the point of getting rid of anything that will stop or slow him down. Don't even get me started on why the rest of the plot is so good in that regard.
I admire the passion put into this video in every single segment. Kept my ADHD butt engaged the entire time somehow through your in-depth takes and the soul put into the video itself
I have another fix for the fourth grade line: What if it was just a joke from Mike meaning his good looks were so superior to his, Sully has been jealous longer than he knew him? Basically a roast, is what I’m saying. (Sorry for the poor explanation, not great with words even though English is my only language)
could also be like a reference to a show/some form of popular media in the monster world, just like we quote contextually appropriate lines for comedic effect
That's the excuse the directors came up with after university came out. They know that for the first movie, they wanted to be that they knew each other for that long, but has since been changed after many rewrites for university where they decided that they met in college, even with that comment in the first movie. The excuse is the best excuse you can come up with to save it and make the continuity make sence. (Though there is a graduation photo in their living room. And we know for sure that they didn't graduate from college as they were expelled)
One thing I really love about the old Pixar Films is that they would take the time to make bloopers for the end just for the benefit of the audience. It literally just screams "we love what we're doing and we will put in the extra work to make an extremely enjoyable experience".
One more thing about the credit song: while being it's own, its melody is the same as the opening theme. It gives a great sense of closure and cohesion
Fun Fact: Boo is most likely non-human, for the cereal that Sully gives her contains multiple dangerous ingredients that no normal human can digest safely.
43:30 the best part is that HE’S THE MONSTER ASSIGNED TO BOO. So he’s probably scared her before, and this makes that part a cathartic moment of revenge and character development for Boo herself.
I think what sets the burp joke apart from anything seen in the Despicable Me or Shrek movies is that the burp joke is cathartic. It's not setting up the character at the beginning of the movie or thrown in to get the kiddies to giggle every 15 mins. It comes at the end of the movie as a mirror of how the movie started. Not only are we happy that the monsters don't have to scare the kids anymore, Mike now gets the spotlight (literally! ) and is able to show his skills off in the best way possible. I think there is also something even funnier about it since he tries his best to get the kid to laugh with slightly higher-brow stand-up but in the end has to resort to amplified burps.😂 The joke has layers! Like ogres!
would like to point out that on the scene where waternoose pretends not to recognize boo as a human in disguise, he's also surrounded by the kid cleanup agency. if he were to bring attention to the human being there, it could ruin his company's image and possibly even get it shut down due to health concerns - not to mention that with such a close eye kept on the company he wouldn't have been able to continue his real plan. in that moment it was in his best interest to feign ignorance until the safety check up was over in order to solve the problem later on himself.
I remember watching this movie when I was like..8yo? It's great to see people appreciating it and "studying" it (or telling how great it is) even after such time! Keep up the good work! And small request, if it's allowed.. What about Planet of Treasure? A video from you on it would be interesting, wether it's a good movie or not in your opinion
I like monsters inc it gives you the classic Pixar feeling. it’s amazing how they took it as simple concept of a child, fearing that there are monsters in the closet. It was able to turn it into a pretty great at entertaining movie by building a world that monsters rely on the fear of children. Rockotar You chose today to put smiles on many faces the noon to help those through worst of times the night to inspire those to achieve their goals, never give up have a nice day stay safe enjoy life
I love Monsters Inc! Grew up watching it! Put that thing back where it came from is my favorite musical as well Mike Wasoki is a genius dude should get an Oscar.
Amazing review, the only thing I kinda disagree on is the thought that tons of movies ripped off the idea that "the villain being recorded about their true nature without their knowledge" is specifically from Monsters Inc. It's actually a fairly common trope that existed way before MI. Not downplaying the scene in the slightest (execution of the trope was still excellent) but it's not something MI invented and they shouldn't be fully credited for the idea itself. Another reimagining I had of the fourth grade line was that Mike essentially said "you've been jealous of me before we even met." Obviously that was not the original intention behind the line but I just thought it was an alternate, nifty solution in a retrospective meaning. Like I said, awesome review. There were things I hadn't thought of at all that you brought up that made me appreciate it even more than I already did.
One thing to consider is that Randall and Waternoose work together but dont like each other its a very very teeth clench team work with Watternoose saying Randall is only the second best scarier before Sully and Randall implied plan to backstab him. They really only work together because they have no choice Waternoose wants faster energy and Randall wants respect and the other one has it . But they have very little likiness to each other that the best they can do is tolerent each other . Kind of suprisign there downfalls wasnt from an argument
Totally agree. Waternoose was also impiled to get the CDA to also arrest Randall when he tried to frame Mike and Sully for the crime. Yes who is the mastermind and who’s idea it was is debatable by fans. What also makes Randall and Waternoose unique is despite working together they had different motives. Randall’s motives were more selfish because he only wanted to be number one in the scare records and Waternooose wanted to save the company from being bankrupt and I do think he did regret his actions when he heard of Sully’s idea of using laugher for power.
@@Koopalingfan one thing to note when Waterernoose was defending Sully saying his twice the scarer Randall will ever be he never mentions Mike so it's possible him not wanting to band Sully was more for him being the top scarer and the only thing keeping the company a float as he didnt have an issue with Randall killing Sully a little later .
@@Koopalingfan another thing is how each gets defeated in a different way Randall is more physical with Boo hitting him with a Bat and then getting toss into a trailer where he's mistaken for a gator and hit with a shovel very Loony Tunes slapsick , Watternoose on the other hand is more outwitted as hes never physically fought and is arrested . After his famous kidnap a thousand children
@8:00 I always think the "you've been jealous since the 4th grade" line is actually an exaggeration. I say that sort of thing to people I have just recently met
That was a brilliant breakdown of the Monsters Inc. Masterpiece. When Pixar is allowed the time and effort to dedicate to their films creation, the quality always shows.
Also Mike could simply be applying a common literary device used by everyone around the world called, hyperbole. The more common term for this would be over exaggeration. He could simply be emphasizing how long Sulley's been jealous by over exaggerating. He's creating a scenario in which shows how extremely jealous Sulley is of Mike's good looks. Just a thought.
So basically he's setting up a joke and then giving the punchline all in the timeframe of around 10 secs, and for the sake of MU keeps it relatively consistent to the first film, even if it was unintentional.
Honestly k love this film so much since it’s one of my favourite from my childhood. Hearing Mike saying ‘let’s watch my favourite part again, shall we?’ Is so special because I remember hearing that on the ads on the old tapes I used to watch
only a quarter in and already you've taught me so much that I'll watch both this and your Monsters University video in their entirety as you have opened me to a new way to view these movies
My favorite part of the movie is that the monsters are ACTUALLY scary even sully who looks more cuddley then scary is HORRIFYING when he screamed (+that scene from the prequel) watternose doing ANYTHING is scary cause he is a giant crab monster Randal is sorta goofy but being invisible helps him mike is scary to some (as i have heard) a modern movie would just make them a 100% kids safe and marketable but Pixar didn't
It's really amazing how many small details you found. When I was young and I watched it there were many things that went over my head but it was two decades ago. You made me want to rewatch it to catch all of these small hints. Modern Disney/Pixar movies don't have all those small attention to details.
One of the things I love about monster's university and monsters ink is Mike's whole arc and how if you watch them in chronological order he does actually get his dream in the end, only instead of scaring he makes kids laugh. And what makes it perfect is this small detail in MU when Mike goes to the human world the kid laughs at him which at the time is devastating to him because it shows he's not cut out to scare, but he is however perfect to make kids laugh which makes that one moment perfect foreshadowing for the end of Monsters Inc and how Mike does achieve his dream in the end, it's just not exactly how he wanted it to be. Which is exactly what his entire arc, and MU as a whole, is about and I love how that theme still ties perfectly into his character even in the first movie.
i absolutely love monsters inc. creative concept, great characters, amazing music, hilarious comedy as well as some truly heartbreaking moments. it's such an iconic and timeless film and it will always be my favorite pixar movie, and honestly my favorite film in general!
The fact you made me realize how much clever depth was put into both one joke and the great ideas that seem “dumb and cheap”, actually make sense when you dive into the perspective of the characters and their rational decisions and just makes me love this movie more, plus this movie is EASILY the funniest Pixar movie it’s a goddamn RIOT! Great banger as always
I vividly remember my dad telling me "you know, monsters/ghosts are scared of you, as much as you are scared of them" well before this movie. I was never afraid of dark or imaginary monsters/ghosts after. I'm so happy I have an amazing dad.
I've always loved this movie. My parents always played it in the car whenever we went on a long trip and nearly every movie we've done that with has gotten old, but Monsters Inc never does! Such a masterpiece!
I like how Waternoose is exactly what a corrupt CEO is like. He acts friendly, and probably is when in a good mood, but once his power is threatened, he immediately changes. It's even foreshadowed in his name how he is corrupt, with the name "Waternoose". Water is essential to life and therefore good (he also is the holder of the energy needed to fuel the city), but a noose is very much not a good thing when put into a different context (like making a noose to tie someone up), exactly how Waternoose is. Friendly, until put into a different context.
You raised some good points about the film I wouldn't have considered myself! It brings me further appreciation towards this film! By the way, one thing I like about Mr. Waternoose is how he still harbors a degree of respect towards Sully despite how he banished him. He even makes it clear to Randall as he notes how Sully is better at scaring children.
I look forward to seeing this. Monsters Inc is one of my favourite movies of all time (possibly my favourite Pixar movie) and it is a movie I have watched many, many, many times. This movie is absolutely wonderful in every way and I look forward to seeing this movie get the praise it deserves.
Monsters inc and Inside Out are the only animated movies that can make me cry, each for their own reasons. Monsters inc has sentimental value to me though, I never pass up watching this film.
Based asf. Masterpiece of a film. the Character Designs, the Voice Acting, the Soundtrack, the World Building, the Pacing, the Villains, the Genius Plot, The Comedy and the Emotion were all on point and it has my favourite ending of any animated film. Sulley is my personal favourite due to being the ‘scariest monster’ yet being the least monstrous character at heart but Mike is still equally awesome because you’re lead to believe that he’s quite annoying and dependent on Sulley but he just wanted to achieve what they’ve spent their lives working towards and in the last 20 minutes of the film he saves Sulley from Randall, exposes Waternoose as a villain, becomes the best employee at making kids laugh and fixes the door for Sulley to see Boo again. What a bro.
I watched it the other day and I was really amazed at how smart this film is. From its premise, to its characters, to its writing, to its music. It’s incredibly funny, very endearing, very thought provoking and one of the best films Pixar has ever done. For me it’s still Pete Docter’s best movie.
Well a lot of establishing scenes aren't able to fit as much information into such a small period of time, at least without feeling overstuffed. This movie genuinely does it better than most if not all other establishing scenes I can think of.

I love monsters U. Literally was the only movie I bought off iTunes back in my day lol.
This is proven right by that scene that shows Mike telling jokes in a boy's room at the end
Holy smokes, you're absolutely right.
The fact that people shat on MU makes me so mad. I hate the bias people have for nostalgia
Yet another great detail, good on you for catching that.
Considering that we find out that the CDA knew all along that humans weren't dangerous but they still have geiger counters to detect human stuff, it is entirely possible that all scarers would trip them do to their time in the human world so these agents were actually not worried about it to begin with.
That is so awesome!

One of my favourites is when he goes:
“that thing is a killing machine!”
And it cuts to boo twirling around like: “La La La La”
It cracks me up 😁
Why didn’t you mentioned how Waternoose’s design works perfectly as both “friendly grandfather” and “spider beast” for when his true nature is revealed and he’s chasing Boo
Good point, there is just so much to say about why this movie is great, that a few details were sure to slip past me.
Idk why but him actually being a villain always made me kinda sad. He was so sweet as an old grandpa spider dude :(
GIVE HER TO ME
One of my favorite things about this movie is how all of the character designs are multipurpose.

I believe the "fourth grade" line was probably Mike was being boastful and exaggerated. I could easily see Sulley saying "we didn't even know each other in the fourth grade".
"We've been friends since 4th grade. Remember that time we caught a pig?"
"Mike, that was-"
"Ahh, good times."
Monsters University was seriously making an emotional call back that, in prequel ways, was foreshadowing exactly that? Brilliant! 😄

Idk I would still trust him if randel was the only villain in the movie and the laughing energy was still used well. Like I sorta feel bad for him, he really had the world in his hands due to his family's energy revolution 🙁
For the 4th grade line my head canon is that they went to the same school together but just didn’t know each other much
For the early versions of MU they were gonna start their rivalry in elementary so yes you are correct :]
Thats a good explanation, they saw each other in fourth grade and realized Sully looked at Mike in a jealous way, but then went to different schools and kind of forgot about each other, but later re-remembered that they already saw each other in fourth grade.
I always just took it that Mike was just joking
Que mal que disney luego sobreexploto este concepto de mira en realidad soy malo

@@mjangelvortex That's true, lol.
@@EthanFazel
I think that joke also worked because the microphone is established to have an echo within the room, so he isn't just burping, but actually using the reverb to power up the burp's noise to an unprecedented (but more importantly unexpected) level.
Sully saying goodbye to boo still hits me in the feels
Best running gag in history will forever be mike being covered by stickers on the covers of anything
I literally screamed "YES! FINALLY!" when you mentioned the walk to work is the best scene.
Finally. An actual documentary about a child’s film that nobody needed but everybody needed.
So... How did Mike get down the mountain again if Scully used all the stuff in the cave to build a sled?

He didnt use them all.
You can see as Sully is pushing his sleigh out of the cave, he used hardly any of the supplies.
I like to think for multiple reasons.
1. He knows Mike couldnt cope with being banished and after he calms down, realises he is going back to monster world and will want to go back too.
2. Doesnt want to take everything from the snowman as he was very helpful, giving shelter and food.
3 He knows how truly capable Mike is on his own.

It's still one of my favourite animated movies. Mike Wazowski is one of the funniest characters ever.
John Goodman and Billy Crystal make the best duo in cinematic history. They play off each other so goddamn well.

As a kid, I didn't cry at that part of the movie.
But ever since my grandpa died, I end up bawling at that very scene as an adult.
One thing I really love about the old Pixar Films is that they would take the time to make bloopers for the end just for the benefit of the audience. It literally just screams "we love what we're doing and we will put in the extra work to make an extremely enjoyable experience".

Rewatching this film is always a joy to watch, and I’ll never not tear up when Sully and Boo part ways at the end
I remember hearing Steve Buscemi mention how he felt bad for treating Frank Oz, Fungus, like he did.
43:30 the best part is that HE’S THE MONSTER ASSIGNED TO BOO. So he’s probably scared her before, and this makes that part a cathartic moment of revenge and character development for Boo herself.
This film actually does have an “immature” joke, Mike’s mega-burp after swallowing the microphone (though I laugh out loud with it)
I think what sets the burp joke apart from anything seen in the Despicable Me or Shrek movies is that the burp joke is cathartic.
I think there is also something even funnier about it since he tries his best to get the kid to laugh with slightly higher-brow stand-up but in the end has to resort to amplified burps.😂
The joke has layers! Like ogres!
"One more time!... IT WORKED!"

would like to point out that on the scene where waternoose pretends not to recognize boo as a human in disguise, he's also surrounded by the kid cleanup agency. if he were to bring attention to the human being there, it could ruin his company's image and possibly even get it shut down due to health concerns - not to mention that with such a close eye kept on the company he wouldn't have been able to continue his real plan. in that moment it was in his best interest to feign ignorance until the safety check up was over in order to solve the problem later on himself.
It's always great to see such an extended and praising essay on one (if not most) of my favorite films ever, great video!
@@nicholassims9837 Makes sense.
@@nicholassims9837 Agree. Only thing similar about Randall and Watternoose is they were both misguided.
@8:00 I always think the "you've been jealous since the 4th grade" line is actually an exaggeration. I say that sort of thing to people I have just recently met
The theme is honestly *ICONIC*
I've Loved This Movie all 14 years of my life, and I never noticed most of this little stuff. 😮
It's always the channels with 20k subs that just produce the best video you see.
Which is exactly what his entire arc, and MU as a whole, is about and I love how that theme still ties perfectly into his character even in the first movie.
i absolutely love monsters inc. creative concept, great characters, amazing music, hilarious comedy as well as some truly heartbreaking moments. it's such an iconic and timeless film and it will always be my favorite pixar movie, and honestly my favorite film in general!
there are few things than i enjoy more than watching a Rockotar video on a rainy afternoon. this movie is a childhood favorite, excited to watch!
The fact that there is a 50 minute video about how amazing monsters inc is makes me uncontrollably happy
Been waiting for this one from you. Really appreciate the work and passion you put into these Rockotar
I love the mostly Mario Galaxy music in the background :)
This channel is a hidden gem. You have earned another sub.
Monsters inc and Inside Out are the only animated movies that can make me cry, each for their own reasons. Monsters inc has sentimental value to me though, I never pass up watching this film.
Coco is the one that always gets me.
For me it’s still Pete Docter’s best movie.
estabiling scene: estabilishes characters and setting
rockotar: pure genius, the best estabilishing scene in history of all cinema
Well a lot of establishing scenes aren't able to fit as much information into such a small period of time, at least without feeling overstuffed. This movie genuinely does it better than most if not all other establishing scenes I can think of.
fun fact : the arabic dub for the movie used the egyptian accent. it fit perfectly with comedic scenes, plus mike was voiced by a very famous ccelebity which helped the movie a bit
