One thing about Ariel’s character that I’ve realized is that she’s a “regular old fish out of water” as she says to her daughter Melody in Return to the Sea but she’s not really insecure about what makes her different from her family and people. Yes her father disapproves of her adventuring and fascination with the human world and her sisters are also like “oh why can’t she be like the rest of us” but other than that Ariel’s not ostracized or insecure about herself. She’s never like “oh is there something wrong with me?” Even in the Little Mermaid TV series we see that Ariel is so unapologetically herself. She’s like yeah I like this stuff and I’m not gonna apologize for liking it I just want others most notably My father to understand me. Sorta like Luz in The Owl House.
ehh beg to differ to a degree, in the beginning of “Part of Your World” was her contemplating if something was wrong with her so even though she wasn’t phased much by their opinions it was kind of clear that her not fitting in was something she thought about
@@oliviarogers2808 Well then, let’s go off what you originally said with it being “a secret,” especially with Triton’s eventual prejudice against humans. He would DEFINITELY want to keep Athena’s human heritage a secret after her death.
It's not. Ariel's mom was a mermaid. It's canon that Ariel looks just like her, and that she was killed saving one of Ariel's sisters from being crushed by a human ship.
Ariel's mom being killed by a ship was kind of integral for Triton's change of heart towards humans in the first film, since it was a ship that killed Ursela in the same way. He saw they can be bad or good.
I would watch the prequel, if only there was a voiceover of Ben belting out of Pirates of the Caribbean music during the dramatic moments. It would be hilarious.
I noticed that the area that Triton and Athena and the other Mermaids are hanging out in Ariel's beginnings is very similar to the Mermaid Lagoon from Peter Pan. And when you said Athena was killed by pirates, my first thought was: Did Captain Hook's crew kill Athena?

I saw Ariel’s Beginning only once, years ago, and my main takeaways were the distinct personalities given to each of Ariel’s sisters and the beginning part with Ariel’s mom, everything else is a bit of a blur
Considering Triton is from Greek Mythology as the son of Poseidon (and cousin to Disney’s other Greek protagonist Hercules), it’s likely that Athena is actually the Greek goddess Athena. This would actually make some sense in the mythology, after Athena is born from Zeus’s forehead Zeus gives her to Triton to raise (probably so Hera won’t murder her, let’s be honest here Hera is not nice), which he does as a foster sister to his first three daughters who he had with his first wife Libya. It seems like in The Little Mermaid universe he and Athena eventually fall in love, marry and have 4 more daughters.
And in another universe, Athena isn't killed by humans, but sacrifices herself to save Zeus from one of his sons, Kratos. I wonder how Triton would feel about that. Would he be mad at? Kratos, because he killed her, or Zeus, because he should've been killed.

I don't know if you're just not counting the sequels or what, but there's a prequel that it literally tells you exactly what happened to Ariel's mum. So for the live action they could just take parts from that film and combine them with the original and it would make for a more in-depth story and more heartbreaking one, if you don't remember what happened in the prequel, it was land people who killed Ariel's mum, possibly pirates and that's why Tridon is so harsh on his kids about going up to land especially around boats.
Great theory - but I'm going to gues that Eric will still be a Prince in his own right; wouldn't it be simpler if his original mother passed away and his father, the King found and fell in love with a mysterious women he met..on a beach? with a foggy memory? it would be a great nod to the original little mermaid to make the love story; Eric wouldn't be related to Ariel by blood, would still be a prince, and Ariel would still be a princess by birth.
@@lenayahoti Thank you thats very kind! To be fair, I loved Ben's theory on what the movie adaption will include, especially giving ursula more context and backstory, it just got a bit more complex and convoluted there at the end for my taste.
If they are going down the Greek mythological route, the parents should be Poseidon and Amphitrite (If you want them to be the grandparents then Ariel’s mother still wouldn’t be Athena as his consort was called Libya)
@@PhilBagels I would assume so but it seems like an odd choice given that people will assume it means the goddess or at the very least a different kind of goddess. Ariel would be related to the gods anyway so it seems like it is too easy for her mother to be a god to not clear that up.
Can you imagine if The Little Mermaid live-action opens up with the following lines: "Wasn't It his sister who went psycho and cold-blooded murerlated a bunch of people? No that was just something people made up to make themselves feel better I think."
Yeah they probably will have Ariel saving Eric which would make more sense anyway given Ariel knows about both the trident and Ursula's lair/magic, etc and this is Eric's first time being exposed to both of those things. Very interesting theory and source material! Ursula having dealings on land also begs the question if she trapped souls of humans somewhere too?

Yeah, there’s a second Ariel movie the talked about it. There’s also a prequel Ariel movie that is official Disney the talks about her mom and what happened I’m pretty sure she was killed by humans which is why triton heats human so much.
Ariel's Beginning was my FAVORITE Little Mermaid movie! I am the second oldest of seven children, aged 20 to 46, so I was watching children's movies well into my 20s with my youngest siblings. I have seen all the Disney animated movies up to 2011, even the straight to video sequels. Most of them we had in the dvd player of the van and played on repeat until the kids got tired of them. Then we could FINALLY switch to a new movie that I would eventually be able to quote word for word because I would hear it so often. For some reason Ariel's Beginning was one of the few movies that didn't drive me crazy. I don't know if it had a different type of music or a different flow to the story, but I never got tired of it and still really enjoy it today.
Ariel’s mom got killed by pirates (possibly Captain Hook’s) ship. She was saving her kids, then went back to the sea shell gift, but got hit in the process and died. This is shown in Ariel’s Beginning
As an avid watcher of the TV series as a kid, not every version has them as siblings!!! And there are more major magic beings. ALSO MORGANA!!! Morgana and Ursula shared a mother and Ursula was the favorite.
And yes I did, loved it and actually found it in a bargain bin at one of the last Rogers Video stores circa '09, which is also how I found the prequel actually existed.. I love the lullaby.
Don't forget that in the actual original Anderson fairy tale, the "sea witch" is actually the mermaid's grandmother. So them being related has long been a part of the story.
Request: Can we have a theory about how Hagrid was purposely leaking information to the golden trio for Dumbledore every time he says “shouldn’t have have said that” and that’s why Dumbledore trusts him so much. Otherwise it doesn’t make sense to trust Hagrid so much because he is seemingly so careless. Also, everything he says to Harry, Ron, and Hermione is useful. He probably purposefully leaked that Buckbeak was going to be killed, knowing that Hermione had a time turner.
In the new book from the new film, Ariel’s mother and Ursula were friends and she’s the one who brought the peace with her brother the king, but Ursula wanted to destroy the humans and Ariel’s mother was killed helping Ursula escape from their net and Triton banished her to the far depths of the sea
I mean, I always assumed Ursula *was* Ariel's Mom, but that was sorta just slapped together because she has magic powers and also knows Ariel is an important part of the royal family even though Ariel skipped on her introduction song.
Edit: I liked the video. I've also watched every movie and the entire series so guilty If we're only talking in terms of the 1st movie then yea we can claim we don't know what happened to Ariel's mom. But it's canon that Queen Athena got killed by a human ship saving one of her daughters while the family was spending time together on the surface. Athena loved music and so Triton banned all music from Atlantica due to how it reminded him of his late wife. The only reason he was willing to have a concert in the 1st movie was because Ariel pretty much brought music back to Atlantica
Watching this, after the live action remake came out, this makes a lot of sense. The only exception being that Ariel beginning tells us her mom’s name is Athena not Selena
i can only hope Disney put this much thought into possibly fleshing out the original animated plot... though not holding my breath to inevitably be drowned.
But if Eric's mom is Ariel's technical mom in this theory... sweet home Alabama. Even if Eric isn't technically related to Ariel's mom... still feels weird ngl.
I WATCHED ARIELS BEGINNING AND I LOVEDDDD IT!!! it was for the kids who have siblings that were 90s kids and grew up with THEIR movies but were born in the early 2000s, therefore being young enough to enjoy this movie when it first came out, and i bet we all adored this movie. thank you very much.
Hey, there. good video. Just found this video. It's interest, because the prequel doesn't address that Triton and Ursula were siblings (as we noted, it was abandoned from the original animated movie). However, unless the broadway show or the book address it(?), what of Morgana in the sequel, who was Ursula's sister. In theory, isn't she/couldn't she be Triton's sister too?
the target audience for ariel's beginning was kids who were 5 to 6 yrs old in 2008 and watching what is considered disney classics, after all disney movies are basically generational films, so yeah it was made for me ( and its better than return to the sea tbh, if you wanna argue please go watch the two back to back right now. )
I doubt anyone on land would recognize ariel as royal blood on land from the past, as the movies obviously show forgotten knowledge of mermiads apart from salors talking about it. And the fact that Melody is made fun of for even being able to talk to fish. It seems very much that they keep it a secret from the vast public. Also, I think Ursula looked like Vannessa before she was turned into an octopus. And i think something bigger happened with ursula as it seemed to effect both ursula and her mom and sister morgana. As they all seem to have been turned into octapuses and banned from the palace, in which they are VERY bitter about. Maybe something having to do with being on land. Maybe there was some sort of war where the land started it with Ursula bringing it to light. Triton was upset about his wife dying and banished music, but there didnt seem to be as much emphasis at that time frame of being afraid of the surface. Being afraid of land feels like a bigger danger than a ship hitting his wife. I think something bigger happened that included actual humans fighting or attacking, or teaming up with ursula to harm his kingdom and all the fish and merpeople along the way. Maybe ursulas love interest was a prince and they sought to rule both over the land AND sea together with Triton out of the picture. And that backfired, failed and she lost the love of her life; the only individual who understood her want for more power, or maybe even influenced her into, and thats why she tortures the rest of the sea from being happy and finding love. Coz in one sweep she lost her love, her power, and her status. That is revenge seeking, I NEED to take over the kingdom with a dark heart kind of scenario.
What if Athena was a human who would sing by the oceans shore and caught young Tritons attention and his sister gave her the gift to be part of that world but when she died she returned not remembering that life but still having the pull to the ocean because she misses Triton unconsciously taking on the name Selena and becoming royalty over time or was royalty either way
Honestly Ursula being Triton's sister would explain why her human or "normalized non octopus" look resembles Ariel so much and some of the other sisters, ignoring disney same face syndrome for pretty characters anyways-
Peter David shared a comic of his that got rejected where he was gonna write the death of Ariel’s mother. In it Ariel’s mother, who was also interested in the surface, becomes the model for a human artist. Triton always watches her from a distance still distrustful but not stopping her since she convinced him it’d be fine. A rival artist finds the artist painting the merqueen one day and knocks a bunch of rocks off a cliff to kill him. Triton’s wife pushes the artist out of the way but she gets crushed in the process. Triton saw the whole thing and kills the rival artist. Before he can kill the artist his wife said her spirit begs him to spare the human so he does, taking the unfinished painting of his wife with him. On the anniversary of the queens death everyone mourns and Triton locks himself in his study with the painting of his wife.

Ah. You're one of the ones that commented before watching 😂😂😂
That is a much better story than his theory
@@lenayahoti Thank you thats very kind! To be fair, I loved Ben's theory on what the movie adaption will include, especially giving ursula more context and backstory, it just got a bit more complex and convoluted there at the end for my taste.
If they are going down the Greek mythological route, the parents should be Poseidon and Amphitrite
(If you want them to be the grandparents then Ariel’s mother still wouldn’t be Athena as his consort was called Libya)
If her name is Athena, then I think we have to assume it's someone else named Athena, and not the actual goddess Athena.
@@PhilBagels Also in the animated Hercules show, we see Poseidon's son Triton and he looks like a swamp monster rather than a merman.
@@PhilBagels I would assume so but it seems like an odd choice given that people will assume it means the goddess or at the very least a different kind of goddess. Ariel would be related to the gods anyway so it seems like it is too easy for her mother to be a god to not clear that up.
"Who was the target audience for this movie?!" It was me, I watched that thing at least twice a week.
Can you imagine if The Little Mermaid live-action opens up with the following lines: "Wasn't It his sister who went psycho and cold-blooded murerlated a bunch of people? No that was just something people made up to make themselves feel better I think."
Plus, Triton is the name of the largest moon of Neptune, named for the Roman version of Poseidon. Full circle 🌕
Or the moon is named that because triton is neptunes son idk 😂
I love the jamming out to the Pirates of the Caribbean music
Yeah they probably will have Ariel saving Eric which would make more sense anyway given Ariel knows about both the trident and Ursula's lair/magic, etc and this is Eric's first time being exposed to both of those things. Very interesting theory and source material! Ursula having dealings on land also begs the question if she trapped souls of humans somewhere too?
Your theories are so entertening and varied! Love them!
Thanks so much!
The greatest cameo I could ask for would be Percy Jackson hanging out with his brother Triton… not gonna happen but it technically could 😉
Ben: “What happened to Ariel’s mom?”
Me before: Hold up- she died in The Little Mermaid Ariel’s Beginning right? Well, I’ve been watching them for 6 years and they haven’t let me down yet, I’ll let him finish.
Me immediately after I completed watching the video: Ahh good, glad I didn’t jump to conclusions.
I have both the sequels on dvd. Actually pretty sure I have watched most of the direct to dvd sequels because I loved getting my hands on continuations of beloved character’s stories and never stopped using dvd’s. Probably didn’t watch it in 2008 since I was 4. I loved the sequel with Melody as a child though and still do because I was a sucker for the idea of the princesses having families and seeing more of their happily ever afters
@10:55 “Quick, easy, and a wasted opportunity” sounds exactly like most Disney live action remakes…
Do a video covering Ariel's 7 sisters Mermaid's and also thier own personality and also own qualities and also likes and also too dislikes as well too Please Please Part 3!
As a tentacle owned person I feel very heard for the first time 😊
How are you using your phone
Original Little Mermaid animated film will only become more popular when the Trainwreck of the live action is released.
Ariel’s mom got killed by pirates (possibly Captain Hook’s) ship. She was saving her kids, then went back to the sea shell gift, but got hit in the process and died. This is shown in Ariel’s Beginning
Ariel's mom might have been one of the mermaids in Neverland. The one with red hair.
@@barbiquearea I have heard that theory too
I have a very rational fear of octopi and anyone who isn't scared of them is the irrational one
As an avid watcher of the TV series as a kid, not every version has them as siblings!!! And there are more major magic beings.
ALSO MORGANA!!! Morgana and Ursula shared a mother and Ursula was the favorite.
At 0:42 Hey Goofy. I see you right next to Donald and Mickey.
When I saw the white beard on Ben, all I heard was “DUUMBELDORE!!!!”
im glad you went into that direction I thought we were going into original fairytale territory
And yes I did, loved it and actually found it in a bargain bin at one of the last Rogers Video stores circa '09, which is also how I found the prequel actually existed.. I love the lullaby.
I think that the shell Ariel’s mom was wearing is the same one that Ursula has the take April’s voice
I was just about to comment what happened to Ariel's mother lol
I ❤️ your videos! Especially the Pixar theory!
Not Ben chanelling his inner Olaf 4:10-4:37
I hit like as soon as I heard Ben's Pirate's of the Carribean theme. Bravo Sir!
I'd like to cosplay as Queen Athena. Her red hair, blue tail and crown are just perfect for me, even though I'm dark blonde and male.
Go for it!
@@YellowBear-kx1ff I'd wear her necklace and seashells too!
@RealSupercarlinbrothers I don't have that, sorry!
I have a suggestion for your what-if series "what if Tom Riddle Jr went to live with Tom Riddle SR instead of Wool's orphanage"
Did you know that Triton is also a moon? 🌛 it’s a moon of Neptune. Which, not coincidentally, is the Latin name for the god of the sea.
I like your star pillow in the background.
I mean, I always assumed Ursula *was* Ariel's Mom, but that was sorta just slapped together because she has magic powers and also knows Ariel is an important part of the royal family even though Ariel skipped on her introduction song.
That would have made it pretty dark if they made Ariel's mom Ursula because it means he was also killed by her own mother.
Ben I will have you know little mermaid 2 was a bigger deal in our house than the first one by a MILE thank you!! For a moment SLAPS
the midway disco scene is so accurate cuz kronks new groove?? hits HARD
Edit: I liked the video. I've also watched every movie and the entire series so guilty
If we're only talking in terms of the 1st movie then yea we can claim we don't know what happened to Ariel's mom.
Ben’s waited years and of course he got the fish half of this week’s series😂💚
I thought it was, “After all, dear, what is idle prattle for?”
I just love the humour you incorporated with the education. Keep it up
its been a minute since i watched your videos! missed you guys
Ariel’s beginning is SOOOOOOOOOOO good! And the best character is Benjamin! You really do need to see it!
Watching this, after the live action remake came out, this makes a lot of sense. The only exception being that Ariel beginning tells us her mom’s name is Athena not Selena
My 10 month old loves your pirate song 😂 He laughs so much
i can only hope Disney put this much thought into possibly fleshing out the original animated plot... though not holding my breath to inevitably be drowned.
I can no longer hear 'Athena' without singing that song in my head
😮 if that theory is right that would explain why Melody,Ariel’s daughter is pulled to the sea because her grandmother felt like that as well😮
2:04 Calling me out like that. Have my like already.
Mother wants to be in the sea. Ariel wants to be on land. Melody wants to be in the sea.
But if Eric's mom is Ariel's technical mom in this theory... sweet home Alabama. Even if Eric isn't technically related to Ariel's mom... still feels weird ngl.
2:38 we owned it in my house hahahaha. i LOVED it. i STILL love it
I WATCHED ARIELS BEGINNING AND I LOVEDDDD IT!!! it was for the kids who have siblings that were 90s kids and grew up with THEIR movies but were born in the early 2000s, therefore being young enough to enjoy this movie when it first came out, and i bet we all adored this movie. thank you very much.
4:46 Confirmed that music attracts pirates, as referenced in the opening scene of Pirates of the Caribbean.
Hey, there.
To add on cool little fun fact, Selena Quintanilla Perez loved The Little Mermaid. It's crazy how you said that was Ariel's mom's name.
Just calling it now, when Ben and J dress up for the Halloween episode, Ben needs to be Captain Jack Sparrow to channel the POTC soundtrack.
I literally almost left the comment he mentioned in the video! LOL awesome video
@RealSupercarlinbrothers wow! This could not look more fake
I hope they keep it that Eric and help save the day and all that. Because if he doesn't then that doesn't show Triton that there are good humans
the target audience for ariel's beginning was kids who were 5 to 6 yrs old in 2008 and watching what is considered disney classics, after all disney movies are basically generational films, so yeah it was made for me ( and its better than return to the sea tbh, if you wanna argue please go watch the two back to back right now.
“I don’t know how this made it to broadway, it’s a bloodbath”
Carrie the musical:
this man had high hopes for the live action
What if Athena was a human who would sing by the oceans shore and caught young Tritons attention and his sister gave her the gift to be part of that world but when she died she returned not remembering that life but still having the pull to the ocean because she misses Triton unconsciously taking on the name Selena and becoming royalty over time or was royalty either way
Her name is Athena, not Selina.
