The simple "Ok" at the end from Joel always gives me chills. She just told him all the things that may go wrong if he dates her, he heard both tapes and how unhappy things got between them and he just goes "Ok", meaning, "I know how wrong this could be but I still want to be with you". Such a strong emotional yet romantic response. I love it!
Yes! It's the realization that if you want all the good stuff, you have to put up with the bad stuff. This world isn't perfect, and people aren't perfect. It's about loving someone regardless of their imperfections.
@@randall-king More than that. It's that, even if things go wrong, you still have the memories of when things were right, and they are and will remain an important part of you.
The whole movie culminates in that "Ok". All of the rest, everything we've seen and learned about Joel and Clementine up until that point was to give that "Ok" as much weight as possible. And it totally pays off.
@@flatline8580 Enternal Sunshine hits close to home for me cuz about a year before l saw it for the 1st time, l had a very similar experience to Joel. Strikingly similar. I was always a shy, quiet guy just like him, and then one day at school this brash, talkative girl just sat down next to me in class and started up a convo, just like Clem did to him on that train. Mere hours later we were on our first "date", again just like Joel and Clem. Things were just happening so damn fast. She even asked me to come home with her, but while Joel reluctantly agreed, l didnt. I mean...l couldn't. I had to draw the line somewhere, because l just didn't DO things like that, so l declined and we went our separate ways. All l could think about was "l dont even know this girl. What if things go bad?", so l didnt take the leap with her. Years later l heard she married an old friend of mines and started a family with him. In fact, he was in the same class as us. I still wonder how my life would have been different had l saw Spotless Mind a year before l met her instead of a year after. Maybe l would have had the same attitude as Joel did at the end of it, and just thought if things go bad with her, then..."ok" 🙄
Exactly my thoughts. I was skeptical when I saw it in the theaters and left really eating crow. While some of his comedies are fantastic, this is probably the best movie he ever did, tbh.
Comedic actors rarely get their chance to shine like this. Its so awesome he was lucky enough to portray his true ability as an actor. Sandler got that chance too with Punch Drunk Love and Uncut Gems and stuff. I prefer those movies one million percent more than the comedies. Including this with Jim, this is my favorite movie ever.
He actually said that the role from his movies that was the most similar to his actual real life self was in this one, I so wish he could've done more movies like this, my favorite movie from him
Outside of the opening and ending scenes, and the people doing the the actual procedure, everything you see is Joel already getting his memories wiped in reverse order, from newest to oldest memory. That's why all of the first memories you see are of a toxic relationship and with each memory everything becomes nicer, until it ends with them first meeting.
@@pnut3844able except it's not a "take" is it smartarse, it's actually what happened, sounds like you never actually realised yourself and are trying to convince yourself otherwise.......
@@ringod123 I've seen this movie plenty, and got that part on the first watch lmao. The doctor LITERALLY says they'll work in reverse order, starting with the most recent memory. So again, what you said was the most obvious thing ever. Yet your arrogance thinking that you discovered something that no one has is hilarious. Dunning-Kreuger effect posterboy
Agreed. Episode 4x22 ("Restless") of Buffy the Vampire Slayer does an excellent job of portraying dreams. I particularly like how the character will exit a door in their vehicle and be in their bedroom immediately, so the way it presents movement between environments is so much like dreams occur.
I had the unfortunate timing of seeing this for the first time while going through a bad breakup. It was the single most emotionally and mentally impactful movie viewing of my life
I totally hear you on this one. I myself was in the same boat as you when first watching this movie. Near the end when the house was falling apart that whole scene grabbed my attention.
This is the kind of film that is really worth a rewatch. When Joel meets Clementine for the *first* time at the start of the movie she says "Don't make any jokes about my name" and he says that he doesn't know any. She mentions "the song" and "Huckleberry Hound" but those don't mean anything to him. Then you realize this takes place *after* Joel has had the procedure done. Then we see the first time they *actually* meet and he makes a joke about her name, sings a bit of the "Oh my darling, Clementine" song, etc. This means that when he had the procedure done it not only erased Clementine but any knowledge he had with that song and Huckleberry Hound. When Clementine comes to see Joel at the end when he's listening to his tape and he offers her some whisky he apologizes because he thought he had some but he only has a little bit. That's because Ruffalo and Dundst drank all of it when they were at his place doing the procedure the night before.
@@p.n.h.8461 Yes, but I think it's more to do with that the first time you're watching it you're trying to figure out what's going on. At first you think it's a normal rom-com movie, then the sci-fi element is introduced as something normal, then things start disappearing and you're trying to make sense of what's going on.
I completely agree when you said, " it makes you wanna give people the benefit of the doubt and forgive." I think thats the point. We focus on all these bad things that happened and cant appreciate the good we have in a relationship.
Yea! We’re all at different points in our lives. I always tell people, unless you lost complete contact with someone there’s never a reason not* to talk to them again some day. 🙌
I absolutely love this movie and feel that it is Jim Carrey’s strongest acting. The best way I’ve heard this described as a love story told in reverse. You start with the bad, but later see the good that caused it all to happen. And I love how open the ending is left. Joel, knowing that it all may go bad again is willing to try because it might just be worth it.
He had just broken up with Renee Zellweger in real life and the director Michael Gondry hired a woman who was the spitting image of Zellwegger to play "Naomi" his former girlfriend before Clementine just to fuck with him and elicit an emotional response. You don't see much of Naomi, but it really did a number on Carrey. Fucked him up.
There was supposed to be a scene at the end of the movie showing an elderly Clementine asking for the procedure and the computer shows she has erased Joel several times within the last 50 years. Meaning they keep going back to each other over and over again.
I love how open ended the ending is. Joel and Clementine clearly still love each other, but know that there's a chance that their second attempt at a relationship could end just as badly as before. However, they seem willing to take that gamble all the same.
Their inner core speaks to each other, but their neuroses cause the conflict. If they didn't think themselves into a corner, they would probably be fine. But who's that well adjusted?
I love it to. I'd say it's a positive ending either way, because even if they do break up again at least they'll have a chance to grow and maybe be better in their next (non-Frodo) relationship.
Michel Gondry is a genius. Almost always uses practical effects, to create big or small effects where you immediately wonder how they did it.. Also made lots of music videos, back when MTV was still something worth watching. Did a lot of work for Bjork.
I love how Clementine's hair colours symbolises the stages of her and Joel's relationship at that point. It's green, colour of growth, when they first meet, red when they get more passionate, orange when they start growing more distant, and blue when they have spent time apart and Clem has erased Joel from her memories.
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” shows us how the characteristics we love about our partner, the things that attracted us to them in the first place, also have shadow sides. Joel’s quiet, easy-going nature is what attracts Clementine to Joel. However, it also means he can sometimes be uncommunicative and passive-aggressive. Clementine’s loud, out-going nature is what attracts Joel to Clementine. However, it also means she can sometimes be erratic and inconsiderate. This film beautifully illustrates the importance of acceptance in relationships. The only way to get to the good is to accept the not-so-good side of your partner. If you expect a perfect partner, you’ll end up alone.
As I said in other comments psychologists use Clementine as an example of Borderline Personality Disorder in film. You can't accept someone who is that mentally ill. Not unless you are very strong yourself and Joel is not, he is a Co-Dependent.
Uncommunicative and passive-aggressive and erratic and inconsiderate are not merely quirky personality traits, they are toxic and destructive to a relationship. While I’m sure most people don’t expect a perfect partner they also don’t want to be with one whose negative personal issues are going to sabotage it.
Not if you’re good looking. People will forgive a lot if they’re physically attracted to someone. That’s how people end up in abusive relationships. Or a relationship can end if one person is more attractive than the other and has options. That’s part of what happened to me. She was a beautiful Italian girl and I was a 4 eyed gimp with very little to offer. Once a real man, a Catholic with a 6 pack came along, I was history. Having money and good looks can save you a lot of grief. Sometimes it doesn’t matter how you treat the other person. If they “feel different,” it’s over. And that can happen at the drop of a hat. I was Joel and she was Clem. Exact same personalities. I now know why some guys want prostitution to be legal. I don’t trust anybody.
I cry every time, saw this movie when I was 14, and now with age at being 31 and having experienced multiple breakups. You feel this existential pain over every past relationship and wonder what could have been.
Love this film. The story is told very much like a brain malfunction - scattered, distorted, falling apart. But Joel and Clem are so much like a real couple. Exactly the type of opposites who’d fall for eachother.
This film is so amazing in every way. The concept is great, it’s brilliantly shot and the acting is absolutely first class. Possibly the best work of both Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet and that’s saying something.
This is one of the most beautiful philosophical explorations of relationships, the unmistakable chemistry that exists between people, and the magic that can happen when you allow yourself to go with what you know is right in your heart and in your gut. The performances from both Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are outstanding. I rank this one right up there as one of my top 5 relationship movies of all time (#1 is Before Sunset).
Love love love the ending when they just say 'ok' and laugh...and they cry a little. Like they know it's going to get messy and f'd up...but it's alright.
I absolutely LOVE this film. One of my all-time favorites. I especially love how the scene on the beach at the end keeps repeating. To me, this signifies that they keep finding each other. I miss films that make you think. The 90's and early 2000's had some of the best movies ever.
Of all Jim Carrey's ventures into serious acting, this is by far his best. And in a time of sequels, remakes, adaptations, and more sequels, we need more original stories like this. As for the ending, I'm sure it's open to many interpretations, but I always thought Joel and Clementine understood that the relationship, if they tried again, would still end badly, but life isn't about only the good memories. Our experiences, good and, bad, make us who we are, which also explains why Joel felt so empty when he woke up after the erasing.. sure, that might not be the typical storybook ending, but what an amazing message!
@@nsasupporter7557 thank you! As someone who has had things told to me and then found out they weren't the truth when I was younger. That movie hit me both in a psychological and emotional way very hard while I was watching it. Still even to this day I cannot watch that without it setting me off crying. The line at the end, Was NOTHING real and Kristoff says YOU were real. THAT'S the line in that movie that really blows me away each time. I have had arguments in my life with people over the phone about my ACTUAL EXISTENCE as a person. They refused to acknowledge that I existed OR who I was. I remember yelling at this woman how could you sit there and say that you deny who I AM? I KNOW who I am AND I'm on the phone with you right now! I AM AN ADULT ADOPTEE & THIS IS HOW ARE YOU'RE TREATED WHEN IT COMES TO THE STATE AND IFHAS RECORDS THAT PROTECT YOUR BIOLOGICAL PARENTS. THEY FLAT OUT REFUSE TO ANY WAY PROTECT YOUR RIGHTS TO EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR EXISTENCE.... EVEN AS AN ADULT. WE SUPPOSEDLY DON'T EXIST IN SOCIETY. WHEN IT COMES TO THESE AGENCIES THAT DO GET FUNDING FROM THIS DAY. YET~FROM WHENEVER WE BEGIN TO WORK WITHIN OUR STATE? WE ARE EXPECTED PAY TAXES AS THE HUMAN BEINGS WE EXIST AS~RIGHT? So now you see why this affected me so much in this movie when he said YOU WERE REAL. #NewYorkGenXBikerLady #ALMOST10YrsNYFosterCare
I think two of your quotes really nail home the point of this movie. First you asked " Can they really do this sort of thing in real life?" regarding wiping memories. Then you mentioned that "maybe they don't have such a dysfunctional relationship. Combining these two things sort of answers your first question, because we as humans do "wipe" our memories as they fade and we forget them. You can see in the movie the first things Joel is forgetting is all the bad times, the arguments, the fights, the being treated poorly. These would be the first things he would naturally forget anyways. It then moves to small details of cute things, again those would fade after time. And he ends with his most cherished memories of the relationship. Things that he would naturally hold on to the longest in memory. So while in the movie there is this magic procedure being done the movie itself is a bigger statement on how moving on from relationships happens. It explains how people can get back together so easily when the can only remember the good parts. Despite the scifi parts of this movie its very human in concept.
Such an underrated movie. More people should be aware of it. I absolutely LOVE this movie. This movie was recommended to me by a friend when it first came out by a self-destructive, suicidal friend. He said it made him think and change his view on life. I watched the movie because I wanted to see what movie could make such a huge impact on a friend who was so depressed about life that most of us almost gave up on trying to help him. One of the most romantic words in the movie is Joel's "Ok" at the end. He and Clementine know that the relationship may end horribly and even worst than the last breakup but he was willing to try again. Knowing how much hurt they could go through and yet it was worth it for him to simply accept that chance and say "ok". Thanks, Cassie. Take care & stay safe!
Saw this right after a huge breakup w/ my college girlfriend of 2 years. This film concept, of wanting to erase a part of yourself, but lamenting it, always stayed with me. Personally, I feel like it's a pretty deep film.
Same, the only girl I ever felt a connection with acted just like Clementine, even down to the hair. Psychologists point to Clem as an example of someone with Borderline Personality Disorder in film. Their life is defined by unstable relationships, impulsivity, substance abuse, etc. Joel is a huge Co-Dependent. It is not a good love story, this is a movie about a toxic relationship. Unhealthy attachment is not love.
It's annoying because people view it as just another "they were meant to be together" romantic movie. Kaufman specifically wrote it as an anti-thesis to that trope, to touch on more real behaviours like mental illness, codependency, trauma, cycles of abuse and toxicity.
I'm so glad you watched it. My favourite film. Everything about it just works. The story, the pairing, the music (so beautiful and fitting for each scene). You caught on to the hair colour thing as well....the key to the timeline. And the "meet me in Montauk" moment. Great reaction to a great film.
Thanks for doing this one Cassie. It's a great film. This came out right as I was graduating high school and I was definitely not ready for how fast things were changing, and how much my equilibrium was disrupted. It really resonates when friends have moved away, or changed priorities, or moved on, or your routine gets muffed up. Getting ghosted, or ghosting someone yourself, can definitely feel like losing a piece of yourself. And even the bad memories are a comfort, in a way. This movie hits you right square in the loneliness and angst...but in a good way. It's like therapy. All Charlie Kaufman movies are like that. You give people the benefit of the doubt because, at the end of the day, we ALL need that. No relationship or growth or goodness is possible without it. Other times you have to walk away. Pain is always part of the equation, though.
I recommend Kate Winslet first movie "Heavenly Creatures", a love story between two teenage girls in the 50's that turn into drama. It's based on a true story well known in New Zealand and to me it's Peter Jackson best movie (I'm not a "Lord of the ring" guy).... I've never seen a reaction on RUclips yet, and it's a shame it's a beautiful film..
He is an amazing writer. His movies are haunting and sad and thought provoking. I am Thinking of Ending Things was crazy. It too me two watches to sort of understand it. After reading about it on Google, I finally understood and it blew my mind.
This movie is the most clever and brilliant take on love being worth it, even if the love is ultimately lost. To live without pain or grief is to live without love.
Most comedians make fantastic dramatic actors. I love watching Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler and our late great Robin Williams. They all surprise you on how talented they truly are. Oh and how can you forget that Kate Winslet is in a Rom-com The Holiday?
Although I recognized his talent I was never a big Jim Carrey fan so I skipped this film when it came out. It just happen to be playing at my favorite arthouse/independent movie theater last year. I was aware that this film made a big splash in our culture and it was my opportunity to see it on the big screen so I decided to check it out. To say that I was impressed is a major understatement. What an incredibly rich tapestry of deep emotion, incredible acting, brilliant storytelling, clever dialogue, and outstanding editing and special effects. Truly a landmark film.
I love your reaction! This is one of my all time favorite movies. Loved the look on your face when you realized that the beginning was the end. It does not lose any power even after multiple watches.
At the end of most relationships, the tendency is to focus on the bad memories and the hurt. We forget or ignore the wonderful beginning and the reason you fell in love with your partner in the first place. Despite the pending doom, Jim Carey is set to enjoy the ride that is their love.
@@mynineridesshotgun IMHO, I don't see how anyone could read The Orchid Thief and be satisfied with Adaptation. Though. this movie, and other writing he's done, pretty much redeems it for me.
He wrote Adaptation. as well. Those two Spike Jonze/Kaufman movies are brilliant. Adaptation is a lot more like Eternal Sunshine in its what's actually real and what's just made up.
Charlie Kaufman really hit it out of the park with this quirky film. His writing style is so deep and nuanced. Even with all the complications and layers of emotions it still comes down to the simple idea of connection. Amazing movie. So unique in concept and execution.
It is so good isn’t it. Why shouldn’t a love story make you think. Love is complex, thousands of connections and emotions it’s never just a good thing or a bad thing. You can’t judge relationships by just the bad things. And even when you move on it’s still ok to accept there were moments of joy.
30:32 "It kinda makes you wanna, like, give people the benefit of the doubt, and forgive...." I think that's your default setting, dear sweet Cassie. You are a truly nice person. This world would be a better place if more people were like you. Amid all the bad news spewing at us from every device in our lives, and all the inhumane ways we find to treat each other, there's Cassie, showing us the way we were meant to be. Thank you for being you! You are a blessing!!!
Being what seems to be hopelessly single and introverted, this movie always puts a pit in my chest. Turns out it's hard to find that perfectly flawed human to get lost with when I can't even bother to begin searching.
I never would’ve thought as a kid that my favourite performance from Jim Carrey would be a dramatic role where he and Kate Winslet both knocked it out of the park

this movie came out right at the end of a relationship for me which had... well, some features in common. As much as I love this movie I can't hardly watch it most of the time. Nothing gets me so bad as the last of the memories and Joel distilling a relationship's worth, and kind of his own life's worth, of regrets into that simple statement - "I wish I'd stayed"
Clementine is used a lot as an example of Borderline Personality Disorder in film, look it up. So yeah same, knew someone just like her. They are people in perpetual crisis.
This is one of my favorite "romance" movies, and when I saw you did it, I immediately had to come watch your reaction. I've had a lot of heartbreak in my life. I've wished I could forget things before. But at the end of the movie, the characters realize that the pain is worth it, and I can't help but agree. The good moments are worth the bad. And you really have to appreciate what you have while you have it, because it won't always be there. These are just really good lessons to explore in art like this.
I think all real relationships begin with such excitement and passion, and yet as we spend so much time with one person we tend to fall into a mundane routine and we forget the spark that brought us together. If you just stop every so often and talk about that magical beginning or actually relive it, it might be all you need to remember why you love that person so much.
This was written by Charlie Kaufman who has witten some of the most interesting and complex movies about the nature about our mind and identity. Others are, "Being John Malkovick", "Adaptation", "Confessional of a Dangerous Mind, " "Synecdoche NY," and "Anomalisa". They are all great. I'd watch them in that order as they get wierder and wierder
I love this movie! The memory where Clem and Joel see the elephants walking through New York was spontaneous. They were filming in Grand Central when the circus started to walk through, and the actors ran out to improvise that clip.
This is an absolutely BRILLIANT film. You do have to watch it twice because there were so many moving parts, twists and turns, truths and falsehoods that it continually makes you ask, "What's happening here?" Jim Carrey has done some non-comedies and this is one of his finest. Kate Winslet is fantastic! I'm glad that you finally got to watch this epic film.
The scene during the initial hang out to the phone call scene was the best “falling in love” portrayal I’ve ever seen on film. Absolutely captured the feelings and emotions brilliantly when you first fall for someone. The soundtrack as well…amazing!
A great film, and I would argue, one of the best representations of the evolution of a love affair. Jim Carrey's greatest performance. Michel Gondry is a gifted director, and Charlie Kaufman is a bone fide genius. Watch anything he writes. Synecdoche New York reduced Roger Ebert to mulling the meaning of life, and sent one of the New York film critics to a night of drinking alone in a bar after watching it. One of my most favorite films. You (Cassie) did a great job of following it. I was gob-smacked by the revelation of Howard and Mary's erased affair, even though all the clues were there. Repeat viewing is definitely warranted.
@@mikephillips1043 I think it's considered a black comedy, but if so, it's the blackest. But it is brilliant. There's a house that is constantly on fire - for years. There's a city, inside a city, inside a city . . . .don't ask me. Reality is warped. It is Philip Seymour Hoffman's greatest performance, encompassing decades of his character's life. It's amazing - and soul-crushing. Charlie Kaufman wrote and directed it, and he is a genius. But don't expect a rom-com. It's not for everyone. Look at Roger Ebert's review. . . www.rogerebert.com/reviews/synecdoche-new-york-2008
What I learned from this film was to guard what you say at all times.. even when you are angry, even when someone is bad mouthing you. In the future you can't take it back... and at the very least you won't have the memory of saying something awful and wishing you could change it and neither will that person.
The conversation in the book store with the book covers slowly changing to white is one of my all time favorite scenes in a film. Such an amazing movie.
Cassie--this is the first of my favorite movies you've featured in quite a while. I wish you'd discover unusual movies more often. This is the high point for everyone involved.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have seen this film at least 40 times. When it first came out, I saw it at the cinema weekly for ten weeks. I loved your reaction to it. My heart not only broke for the characters but for you as well.
I was also confused about how they met at first. If you notice, when they actually first met on the beach, he knew the song: "Oh my darling, Clementine" But when they meet again on the train, he doesn't know the song. This is because the memory of the song itself is wiped from his mind. I think this was because the memory of his mother bathing him in the sink, while singing that song was unintendedly erased. Or it's Just because he associates the song with Clementine.
I am a crazy film fanatic and have watched over 3700 movies in my 38 years on earth and this has been, ever since it came out, my favourite movie of all-time (with a close Mr Nobody about “making a choice is not choosing all the millions of other ways our lives could go and that is scary af”). To me this is one of the most thought provoking movie ever made and is also visually one of the best portrayal of “memories in our mind”. I had a very hard break up after 8 years and attemped suicide 2 times in a very difficult 3 years span after. But to me, this movie is the reason I would still to this day NEVER EVER wish for the memories of my ex or even that hard time to disappear. I am who I am because of my memories. And today I have an amazing girlfriend and the sweetest little daughter (6 months old, sleeping next to me right now haha) and everything that I lived, I accept entirely.
I went through a really traumatic romantic thing also, but this movie is insanely triggering for me haha. I'm glad you were able to move past it and are in a better place, I hope I am too one day.
Eternal Sunshine is one of my favorite, if not my favorite movie that I've ever seen. It's one of the most honest and relatable love stories, and after starting such a chaotic story in medias res, it really is a story of hope and humanity. Not many other films show how ugly, cruel, and stupid people can be when they're hurting, but I think Gondry just absolutely crushed it with this story.
This was the movie that taught me that Jim Carry can act. I basically see him as a buffoon, but only because that's the role he generally chooses. This however was brilliant. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Saw it with my wife in the theater.
@@nsasupporter7557 You're a very angry person, aren't you? You don't even know me, lady. "I realize I've never met you, but let me tell you something about you that you don't know!" Have fun with that.
The scene where he felt like a scarred little kid. One of my favorite scenes in any movie ever. Also she called him out with that wimpy sad puppy dog thing he does. And whyen he tells her to wait, he does exactly that. They will fall in love again, maybe again start to despise her. It was someting they where always attracted towards, that kind of person. For better or for worse. Will it be better this time around? Who knows. But we are attracted to who we are attracted towards, also regarding experiences. We need to go through them for better or worse. Sometimes multiple times, sometimes we will just be in a loop until we die. But it's okay.
A favourite film of mine starring some of my favourite actors! ❤ Carrey and Winslet are suberb and Carrey once again demonstrated that he's excellent in more dramatic roles as well. You commented on the quirkiness of Kate's character; I think she can be a bit quirky in RL as well (which I quite like), but she also seems to be a genuinely nice person. 😊 Thanks for the reaction!
This is a beautiful movie. With the files and tapes, they have a chance to start new while also learning from the past & their mistakes with each other. All they have to do is want to try
Early 20s me was obsessed with this film. I don't think i'd ever really seen a film with a character like Joel that I could actually relate to(who also thrives off people with extrovert personalities).
A great example of just how good comedians can be in dramatic parts, and how funny "serious" actors can be when they're given the chance to breath. There's a fascinating conversation...maybe on the DVD?...with Gondry and Winslet and Carrey talking about the concept of the characters and their approach to making the film.
They erased a core memory of his mother, so sad. How she used to sing him Oh my darling Clementine. He didn't remember thatsong the second time around when they met. Such a beautiful movie. Can def recommend watching it several times, you get so much out of it. Such a creative masterpiece.
So glad you liked this movie! I thought it was super intriguing when I 1st saw it. The jumbled timeline the movie gave us, and especially the visual effects of the erasing scene in Joel's memories. Everything was done really well and made you think about relationships, people, and memories in a new light. If you enjoyed Jim's dramatic work here, you should try The Majestic! It's another really good JC movie that isn't in the same genre of his more popular comedies.
What a movie. It’s completely absurd yet at the same time I feel like it’s one of the most realistic movies about love and relationships I’ve ever seen. Loved your reaction, Cassie. Super honest.
Wow I’m sooo happy you react to this one! One of my favourites! 😍 I wish Lacuna really exists and erase some bad memories (and some people) but at the end I would be lie Joel wanting to keep some of them..the chemistry between Jim and Kate was amazing! The soundtrack is also amazing! 👍🏼
My girlfriend and I watched this when it first came out in 2004. It’s the only movie we, or myself, have ever watched where we immediately watched it again that same night. We were blown away. Fast forward 18 years, she’s now my wife of 17 years, and I’m watching this with our teenage daughter. So many emotions and memories of our life together, and so many more than the first time we watched it. Relationships can be difficult, and to make the choice to stay with someone, even when times are rough, and say “okay”, I choose to be with you, as Joel does, it’s one of cinemas most simple and yet powerful moments. So happy to revisit this wonderful film. Thanks.
I have collected and watched an absolutely embarrassing number of films, and this one is easily in my top 50 favorite films, possibly in my top 20. I've never made a list, but any time I think of what some of my favorite films are, this one ends up in my brain. It's such a fucking great flick and the cast and crew are firing on all cylinders.
Stranger Than Fiction is another cerebral film with a lead actor (Will Ferrell) in a role totally opposite of his usual roles. Highly recommended if you like this film.
I wasn't expecting much when I went to see this in theatres but man was I blown away by the end of it. Always gotta watch if someone is doing a reaction to this, which is not as much as I have noticed but I guess makes it a bitter sweet type of thing.
Regarding your only recall of Kate Winslet was her role in "Titanic." She had an outstanding lead role (Emmy winner) in an HBO mini series (7 episodes) "Mare of Easttown." It has a very high IMBD rating of 8.5. A detective in a small Pennsylvania town investigates a local murder while trying to keep her life from falling apart. Whether you feature it as a Popcorn in Bed showing or privately watch, I'm sure you will be entertained. -Virginia Beach, VA
The ending was like going back in the past knowing you'd breakup with this person you love but you'd still do it all over again anyway because it was worth it.
I think there are two camps: those who believe they’re meant for each other bc they have history and found one another again; and those who say their history means they’re not compatible. History is bound to repeat itself if you don’t learn from it. Heartbreak is hard, but you have to keep moving forward to get to where you’re supposed to be.
@@popularopinion1 No, I’m in the 2nd camp. They’re in a stagnant loop of making the same mistake over and over again. Just bc you genuinely cared for someone once doesn’t mean you’re meant to be together.
@@bekind3931 agreed generally, but there's no "meant to be" in life. In the case of the two main characters, they have none of the memories, none of the pain, but they have the lessons, or at least the beginnings of them. They can of course fall into the same loop of pain and heartbreak if they don't try to learn, but with every material at their disposal to afford them the opportunity, the likelihood of that is low.
@@popularopinion1 They don’t have the lessons. Lessons are what you learn through experiencing bad situations yourself. It’s just like when someone tries to tell you they’ve been down that road, and it’s no good. You think you’re diff so it’ll be diff for you. Their characters will go thru a happy period, like before, but since they are the same ppl with the same issues as when they 1st met, they’ll get to a point where they’ll say, ‘I don’t know why I didn’t trust MYSELF on the tape bc I was right about you the 1st time.’ And they’ll experience heartbreak again, only worse, bc they’ll think, ‘Wow. I can’t even trust myself not to make the same mistake again. I must be so broken.’
It's that, even if things go wrong, you still have the memories of when things were right, and they are and will remain an important part of you.
resigned conviction
One of the best movie Jim Carrey has starred in. Totally outside his comfort zone and he nailed it. A great concept done to perfection.
He actually said that the role from his movies that was the most similar to his actual real life self was in this one, I so wish he could've done more movies like this, my favorite movie from him
@@armpit_farts7327 well said, punchdrunk love is another true gem.
Check out Kidding the series
Outside of the opening and ending scenes, and the people doing the the actual procedure, everything you see is Joel already getting his memories wiped in reverse order, from newest to oldest memory. That's why all of the first memories you see are of a toxic relationship and with each memory everything becomes nicer, until it ends with them first meeting.
That's very profound, thanks for pointing this out.
Gah, now I need to watch it yet again. I never realized this.
Uhhhhh yea, that's the most obvious take ever lmao
@@pnut3844able except it's not a "take" is it smartarse, it's actually what happened, sounds like you never actually realised yourself and are trying to convince yourself otherwise.......

This movie is a masterpiece. One of my favorite films of all time. And probably the best simulation EVER put to screen of what it feels like to dream.
Agreed.
Episode 4x22 ("Restless") of Buffy the Vampire Slayer does an excellent job of portraying dreams. I particularly like how the character will exit a door in their vehicle and be in their bedroom immediately, so the way it presents movement between environments is so much like dreams occur.

Definitely check out The Science of Sleep by the same director, MIchel Gondry. It is equally imaginative if not even more so.
Yes, the dream/memory scenarios were so well done, in comparison with something like Inception which I thought didn't work at all.
For me, it was Midsommar. Holy crap.

This movie has so much replay value. Every time you watch it you find little details you missed before. I really love this movie.
She(Clementine) only has one leg in the scene where the car falls and she’s walking away. 😂
This is such a GREAT MOVIE that we tend to notice more+more details with each rewatch, rite😊?
@@p.n.h.8461 Yes, but I think it's more to do with that the first time you're watching it you're trying to figure out what's going on. At first you think it's a normal rom-com movie, then the sci-fi element is introduced as something normal, then things start disappearing and you're trying to make sense of what's going on.
I completely agree when you said, " it makes you wanna give people the benefit of the doubt and forgive." I think thats the point. We focus on all these bad things that happened and cant appreciate the good we have in a relationship.
You typed 'we', but you truly mean 'some'.

And Kate Is amazing too….. right?? Hmph.
@@katiehodgins8046 You know it 😘
There was supposed to be a scene at the end of the movie showing an elderly Clementine asking for the procedure and the computer shows she has erased Joel several times within the last 50 years. Meaning they keep going back to each other over and over again.
@@Choopytrags that's actually messed up lol
I love how open ended the ending is. Joel and Clementine clearly still love each other, but know that there's a chance that their second attempt at a relationship could end just as badly as before. However, they seem willing to take that gamble all the same.
My girlfriend and I disagreed on whether they decided to try again. I said they did she said they didn't. We broke up.
@@chubbrubb72 erase her

Michel Gondry is a genius. Almost always uses practical effects, to create big or small effects where you immediately wonder how they did it.. Also made lots of music videos, back when MTV was still something worth watching. Did a lot of work for Bjork.
dead leaves and the dirty ground
Viveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee la FRANCE
Charlie Kaufman is a genius.
He’s also kind of dick, told Jim Carrey, who was depressed after a break up, not to get better so he could capture the authenticity of sadness
I love how Clementine's hair colours symbolises the stages of her and Joel's relationship at that point. It's green, colour of growth, when they first meet, red when they get more passionate, orange when they start growing more distant, and blue when they have spent time apart and Clem has erased Joel from her memories.
Did you read the essay on RUclips for it. Bc thats mine (: also reps the seasons as well
The color helps us know what time period we're watching.
Also the name of the hair color: Blue Ruin 💙💔
Thanks for that. I never considered that. I always thought the point was that her emotional life was flighty and inconsistent.
This movie is masterpiece. Everybody's gotta learn sometime.
So well said and so true!!
Uncommunicative and passive-aggressive and erratic and inconsiderate are not merely quirky personality traits, they are toxic and destructive to a relationship. While I’m sure most people don’t expect a perfect partner they also don’t want to be with one whose negative personal issues are going to sabotage it.
@@brianmcconnell1817 dont forget pattern of unstable relationships, impulsive self-destructive behaviors, and substance abuse issues.
This is one movie where the “making of” and commentary is as fascinating as the movie. Such an amazing piece of art on so many levels.
Gondry is a genius. Great movies, and great music videos
@@Ishai1 Science of Sleep
Just because, which are the other four?
"Her" is my all time of the genre
Check out "comet." It's basically the spiritual successor to this movie.
I absolutely LOVE this film. One of my all-time favorites. I especially love how the scene on the beach at the end keeps repeating. To me, this signifies that they keep finding each other. I miss films that make you think. The 90's and early 2000's had some of the best movies ever.
Cassie's emotional intelligence was a perfect match for this film. I haven't seen anybody follow it so closely and keenly the first go round.
I couldn’t have said it better, Barry.
I definitely didn't, but then again I was 13 when I saw it the first time lol. So I guess that's understandable.
Calling it now: This is your best reaction video. Great freaking movie and your post-movie commentary was spot on.
This is easily my favorite Jim Carey film.
After the Truman show
I think two of your quotes really nail home the point of this movie.
Me too, it has such brilliant performances from Jim and Kate, arguably the best of their respective careers.
@AlexG1020 probably the best underlying lesson about that film, the well written Co-dependemcy of thier relationship.
Written by Charlie Kaufman, and every movie of his is mind bending. I will watch any movie he writes.
He is an amazing writer. His movies are haunting and sad and thought provoking. I am Thinking of Ending Things was crazy. It too me two watches to sort of understand it. After reading about it on Google, I finally understood and it blew my mind.
"It's pouring rain outside." Such a great setting to watch this movie!
This movie is the most clever and brilliant take on love being worth it, even if the love is ultimately lost. To live without pain or grief is to live without love.
"The things that make us who we are.... I dont want my pain taken away; I need my pain." - Captain Kirk.

Although I recognized his talent I was never a big Jim Carrey fan so I skipped this film when it came out. It just happen to be playing at my favorite arthouse/independent movie theater last year. At the end of most relationships, the tendency is to focus on the bad memories and the hurt. We forget or ignore the wonderful beginning and the reason you fell in love with your partner in the first place. Despite the pending doom, Jim Carey is set to enjoy the ride that is their love.

And even when you move on it’s still ok to accept there were moments of joy.

this movie came out right at the end of a relationship for me which had... well, some features in common. As much as I love this movie I can't hardly watch it most of the time. Nothing gets me so bad as the last of the memories and Joel distilling a relationship's worth, and kind of his own life's worth, of regrets into that simple statement - "I wish I'd stayed"

One of my all time favorite films. Absolutely stunning performances by Kate and Jim
This was written by Charlie Kaufman who has witten some of the most interesting and complex movies about the nature about our mind and identity.
True. Some things you should keep to yourself until the moment passes. Or until you find a more fair way to communicate what you need to.
The conversation in the book store with the book covers slowly changing to white is one of my all time favorite scenes in a film. Such an amazing movie.
Cassie--this is the first of my favorite
movies you've featured in quite a while.
I wish you'd discover unusual movies
more often. This is the high point for
everyone involved.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I have seen this film at least 40 times. When it first came out, I saw it at the cinema weekly for ten weeks. I loved your reaction to it. My heart not only broke for the characters but for you as well.
I was also confused about how they met at first.
If you notice, when they actually first met on the beach, he knew the song:
"Oh my darling, Clementine"
But when they meet again on the train, he doesn't know the song.
This movie is incredible in every way a movie should be. One of my favorites.
You've lived the movie.
This is one of the most underrated films in the last 20 years. Brilliant performances by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslett but the story is fantastic.
This is one of the most OVERRATED movies.
@@Prime209z Using all caps to emphasize your point is overrated.
@@lordrahl2345 lmao, nice.
One of my favorite romantic movies.
Cheers 🍺
Underrated? Most people who talk about this movie have nothing but good things to say
This was the movie that taught me that Jim Carry can act. I basically see him as a buffoon, but only because that's the role he generally chooses. This however was brilliant. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Saw it with my wife in the theater.
Did you ever see The Truman Show? I think that was his first legit acting role. Other than The Cable Guy maybe?
@@ct6852 Yes I did, but it was after I saw this. I somehow missed Truman when it was out. He really can act when he wants to.
IMO : Their 2nd time around would definitely be better: 'cause they already had the tapes (that would help them sort out their differences)😊
You’re far and above my favorite reactor. You wear your emotions so openly. ❤️
this movie is an underrated masterpiece in film making, in my opinion
You understand movies so much better than I do at first 😂
This movie is a freaking masterpiece.
Early 20s me was obsessed with this film. I don't think i'd ever really seen a film with a character like Joel that I could actually relate to(who also thrives off people with extrovert personalities).
YES} This is my FAVORITE movie!!! Definitely worth rewatching. You pick up more details with each viewing.
A great example of just how good comedians can be in dramatic parts, and how funny "serious" actors can be when they're given the chance to breath. There's a fascinating conversation...maybe on the DVD?...with Gondry and Winslet and Carrey talking about the concept of the characters and their approach to making the film.
“At least try to hide it Mary” 😂🤣😂
Our memories, both good, bad, and everything in between, are what make us what we are. I would NEVER have that kind of procedure done to myself.
They erased a core memory of his mother, so sad. How she used to sing him Oh my darling Clementine. He didn't remember thatsong the second time around when they met. Such a beautiful movie. Can def recommend watching it several times, you get so much out of it. Such a creative masterpiece.
You know it's a GREAT MOVIE when each time you rewatch it, you notice more+more little details 😊
Such an amazing movie. I also LOVE Jon Brion, his music is so amazing. He was also in the band The Grays from the 90s
The last scene of the movie perfectly sums up its existential philosophy with just one word.
No it doesn't lol
Has always been in my top 3. A masterpiece of cinema.
Did Charlie Kaufman direct this one? I'm pretty sure he wrote it. I don't know if he was a director yet.
@@ct6852 Michel Gondry directed it
'Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.' ❤️💔
Stranger Than Fiction is another cerebral film with a lead actor (Will Ferrell) in a role totally opposite of his usual roles.
She is incredible in that.
She's been great in everything. I originally thought Titanic might've been kind of a fluke...but it definitely wasn't. She's a legit movie star.
Wow a few good men and then eternal sunshine? You’re picking some of my favorite movies these past few days!!!!!
The ending was like going back in the past knowing you'd breakup with this person you love but you'd still do it all over again anyway because it was worth it.
this was filmed in my home town. i remember going to watch it with my friends while filming.
I think there are two camps: those who believe they’re meant for each other bc they have history and found one another again; and those who say their history means they’re not compatible. History is bound to repeat itself if you don’t learn from it. Heartbreak is hard, but you have to keep moving forward to get to where you’re supposed to be.
Thing is, with the tapes & files, they have a chance to start new while still learning from the past. They just both have to want to.
One of my top five films of all time. So glad you enjoyed it!
Such a good movie! A total package of powerhouse talent. In my too 5 best love stories.
(@19:08) "Please try to hide it Mary" had me rolllllling! Great observation skills and hilarious commentary!
