This is one of my all time favourite movies! It is a perfect example of unconditional love. Also, the Mary/Howard plot point was to show the audience that although the memories are erased, the emotion still stays. Real love never truly leaves you.
My take was, they wanted to erase their memories to avoid the pain of loss. But without those memories, they are doomed to repeat the same mistakes. So even though the memories bring you pain, they are necessary for growth
You guys clearly haven't seen him in his most recent project, Kidding. It first aired some years ago and I think it got cancelled. It's amazing. It got a lot of criticism because people thought it was a kid's show. But it's about a sad and subdued man who makes a kid's show. It's truly a tragic story and he delivers it flawlessly ❤ Never felt so moved by a Jim Carrey's performance.
Omg. Same experience 😭 I was also 14 when I watched for the first time and cried after it ended. I also feel empty & lost for a couple weeks. 10/10 do not recommend
When this movie came out, they had a fake doctor's website where you could get more information on the procedure. Like people actually thought this was a real procedure. It was cool. Love this movie and loved your reactions! Keep up the good work! ❤
We can lose our memory but we can still have the ability to learn. The people we love, we not only know them, we learn them, even when we're apart from them we still carry the little things we learn forever, for the better or not
This is one of my favorite movies ever. the Mary/Howard plot point was to show the audience that erasing memories doesn't solve everything. There's still an impression left. Just like how Joel and Clementine found each other again even after Joel erased his memories. Charlie Kaufman's writing and Michel Gondry's directing really both worked so well together in this. This was a more dramatic role for Jim Carey. It's one of those movies that's stuck with me ever since I watched it.
This movie is one of my top 3 - maybe 5 - and I think my very favorite WORD (not line) of this movie is, “Okay.” It’s profound. Kudos to you bros watching and processing it. Friggin awesome. I sure had a good time. Cheers!
This is one of my favorite scripts of all time (Kaufman is legend), Gondry does an amazing job directing, and every performance is gold standard. So glad you boys got around to this!
As someone who has PTSD, if technology existed that would allow me to completely forget about the trauma, I would absolutely do it. But my trauma wasn't a bad relationship. I've had more than one of those. Yes it was painful but not something I need to forget. But the true trauma in my past, I think my mental health would benefit if I could forget it.
What I like most about this movie is that the sci fi is just the set up. It doesn't entirely interfere with the story. It's not about how cool the idea of mind erasure is as a scientific concept, but it's just an excuse to get into Joel's mind and figure out who this guy is and what he's like. We see very little of Clementine or any other character outside of Joel's perception. This might be the most honest movie ever made because it's not pretending that any of the events portrayed in it are factual or actually happened in the way we're seeing them. They're all from Joel's romanticized perspective. The good parts of the relationship could be just as exaggerated as when the relationship goes south. We never see things from Clementine's perspective, but it's done well enough that we understand both why Joel loves her and they ultimately drive each other crazy. They're drawn to each other because they exhibit traits that the other one wishes they had. Clem is outgoing, spontaneous and a free spirit. Joel is quiet, thoughtful and reserved. Opposites attract, I guess. I knew a girl like Clementine (or Joel's perception of her) and I was a Joel. I'd just gone through a bad breakup with a girl and the film helped me to deal with a lot of things I was going through. It helped me to see 2 flawed people and where I wasn't right for her and she wasn't right for me, no matter how much I wanted things to work out. Some of Joel's outbursts still make me cringe because I see myself in him and wishing I hadn't said some of the things I did when I was a stupid young man who didn't know any better. It was my first serious relationship and I didn't know what I was doing. For me, the sci fi is just a set up so we can see all the very human and identifiable behaviours that people can have in a relationship. I find people who haven't been through this or don't identify with the characters find the movie boring and don't get it. I don't know that it's a movie for everyone. I felt every one of their lines and I quite literally almost said verbatim those words Jim Carrey does on the ice when they're laying there about him being happy. But again, if you're not a Joel, his behaviour can come off as needy and pathetic. I'm sure it would to a lot of women, actually, not just men. I love this movie because it reminds me that I'm still human.
I vividly remember watching this film and Lucky Number Slevin back-to-back in one night during a winter vacation with my cousins. It was an awesome movie night, both films went into my favorites list
this is one of my favorite movies and i cry everytime i watch it. i love how creative they are with the "dreamy" parts, and how memories sometimes feel like they bleed into each other, the library book titles being erased, etc.
"It's something you would consent to, but then forget you consented to. Is it ethical? Is it not? I don't know." Kinda dark, but similar concerns have been raised in the real world about electroconvulsive therapy aka "shock therapy." It causes amnesia, usually regarding right around the time the procedure happens, but sometimes extending months or years prior. Some psychologists and experts on biomedical ethics argue that this makes it difficult or impossible to actually consent to the procedure. Signing something, affirming "yes, I consent to this," etc are of dubious value when after the fact, someone who has lost memory of that part of them says "wait I didn't want to do that wtf did you do to me."
I watched the special features on this movie and all of the special effects were filmed not CGI. He used so many cool techniques to get those effects. I wish I had known that before I watched it. Would have made me appreciate them more while it happened.
I’m so happy you guys finally got around to this 😊. I’ve seen it before, but this will be the first time I’ll be watching it after having an agonizing, devastating breakup with a guy that I was absolutely certain I was going to marry. We were together 9 years. Not gonna lie… I would consider erasing him and the memories from my mind too. I get it now. I’m curious to know if anyone else here feels that way after going through a bad breakup or is it just me? Anyways, hope you guys enjoyed it. Ps- so sorry I had to leave your patreon temporarily but I’ll definitely be back soon ❤
being rational, It's better to remember, even if it's to be angry or sad, to know what you're angry or sad about is better, that being said I would totally erase
My marriage of ten years (with him for 16 years) ended earlier this year. Whilst I’d like to erase the pain I don’t want to erase the memories anymore. He was a big part of my life, most of my adult life.
I know they accepted at the end that the relationship would probably fall apart again, but I like to think that they would be pleasantly surprised by their relationship working out due to having gotten so many concerns out of the way right off the bat. Like, if they hadn't gone through the procedure, they wouldn't have lost their initial memories, but they also would have never gotten back together and made new ones and possibly made it work.
I would recommend starting with "Being John Malkovich" followed by "Adaptation." Then watch "Synecdoche New York," which is one of my all-time favorite films.
If you like the artistic style of this film, I recommend checking out Michel Gondry’s music video career. He’s pretty well known for making practical sets, and has some of the most inventive camera work I’ve ever seen. See Bjork “human behavior” & “army of me”, Daft Punk “around the world”, Lucas “Lucas with the lid off”, Foo Fighters “everlong”, White Stripes “fell in love with a girl” and many many more.
Many thanks to Zuff, Rob & Bryce! 🧠 All hail Charlie Kaufman's writing and Michel Gondry's directing. ෴ I ordered a *gift* *basket* for your winter pleasure and MAIL-TIME enjoyment. After my first two gifts (earlier this year) not having gift options, I'm relieved to say this big one will have a printed message along with it. It should arrive in your box between December 1st and 5th, so be on the lookout. 🎁
The artist who created this movie is one of my favorites. He also directed many music videos such as Everlong by Foo Fighters! As well as Bjork, White Stripes, Daft Punk
To answer your question about the kitchen scene. That was all forced perspective and not CGI. Gondry tried to use practical effects wherever he could. Another interesting decision on his part was the soundtrack. Music wasn't used to fill in bits between dialogue. Rather you only got music really when there was dialogue or something happening
i love this movie. its so good and so unique. the cast is great. i prefer jim carey in his dramatic roles. one of my exes said he wished this place existed so he could erase me. which tells me he missed the whole point.
One of my favorite movies still to this day. I love how unique the plot of it is. I've always liked Kate Winslet, i used to fangirl her a lot. I also like Jim Carrey but the first time i watched this, i didn't look properly the other cast names than Winslet, until after the movie and realised i didn't recognize that Jim Carrey was in this AT ALL because of how different he is in this movie. But when i noticed his name afterwards, i was like: "Wait, what?! How is it possible that i could've not recognized him?!" And i've seen several of his films before, he has always been a very familiar actor to me. This was funny to me.
That punch she gave him on train was off script that was Jim real reaction to the pinch shocked and pissed that the director kept it in the editing cause it fit her quirky character
My favorite Jim Carrey movie along side The Trueman show, great you are watching it. I remember the premise but I have a feeling I'm not going to remember a lot of the plot. Oh well. It's not on any of the platforms I currently have subs to, and I'm not going to buy it. 🤷♀️

First observation: YOU, the guy in the middle - you’re an absolute NINJA about how you refuse to spoil things for your friends there. Very. Cool.
My psychology teacher showed us this movie when we were on the memory unit. It was a big hit in our class 😊
Clementine is rumored to have BPD and as someone with that disorder it really speaks to me. This is my favorite movie after all these years.
