Adoptables (and closed species) can be a scam for the reasons you listed; unessecary restrictions, "reclaiming" them, lazy recolors, restricting access, etc. But if they are fairly priced, well done, not many restrictive rules, and (in the case of adoptables at least) the artist surrenders control of the character to the customer upon purchase, it's okay.

The thought of closed species stresses me out as an artist. v.v Example: There's one closed species on DA that's catus animals in pots but... that's been done before. I've seen it on t-shirts and stuff. I've even doodled that before. My fear as an artist is that I'm gonna come up with a cool idea and one of these closed species groups is gonna come after me for having a similar design. Meanwhile, I had no idea they were a thing until afterward.

when I did adoptables on amino I was in this raptor species group and I had like my character and then someone would "commission" me to make what their character and my character's baby would look like if that makes any sense. all was well until someone asked me to do the baby thing but their character looked extremely similar to mine so "it looks just like their character" or smthn and I had also apparently violated one of their like 40 species rules. the person must've messaged a mod instead of telling me and so I got like 20 pms from randos yelling at me and I was kicked before I could even refund the person or apologize.

To me, making adoptables are sort of a paradox. To make good adoptables, I have to put a lot of effort into them and go into lots of details, but then I got too attached to them and not want to sell them in the end.

Oh yeah adding rules to a character or saying you can reclaim them is a huge pet peeve of mine. I also hate the people who say you can't resell the character. Dude I paid for it I should be able to sell it again later. Sure you don't want it resold for more then what the person paid for, but they should have the right to do what they want with the design.
So yeah I do buy adopts once in awhile if I see a super good design. But I look into rules and stay away from closed species for the most part. I also avoid base based adopts because artists unless its their own base tend to overcharge on them.

@@almanotolrado7744 Technically, the "you paid for it so you can resell it" may not be true depending of the country were the artist live. Some country are more protective about copyright and artistic property than others. In some country, like France, you can never buy a design like you buy an object. Because they consider ideas are not objects. If the french (or similar law from another country) corpyright apply to the design. What you do buy is the right to be the only one allowed that can use and dupplicate this design. So the artist is totally in his right to revoke yours if you do something whith his creation that he thinks it's not ok. By paying you you agreed a contract were you will follow the rules to have the right to unse the design. If you doesn't follow them the artist can take back this right from you.

As someone who draws their own characters I can say I also love adoptables. It comes down to your preference in the end. I don't have many because I can easily design my own but some artists are REALLY good at their designs and I always enjoy the very complicated ones because I typically have a simple and natural color/markings to my characters. So I always look at a few certain artists and wait for an adoptable that really screams "That's me"! Then buy it. I currently only have 1 adopt.

  • @DragonGamer0713

As someone who has been buying adopts for a solid year now, I can easily say that I learned a few things about them in general. I can't draw well, but I have made my own dragon base (twice) to use for adopts, but no one bites. Oh well.
But in regards to buying them, I do seek quality and design overall. Also, as a writer, I feel like I need a visual rep of the character before I can place it on a page, especially if this is based on a fandom or fandom world. Original works...well, I turn to commissions for those~
There are a few adopts I regret buying because they are poor quality and I more or less got scammed, but I also learned to never buy from that particular artist again.
Thanks for the video, Spirit! No joke, I kinda held my breath for this one!

As for the adoptable portion, you're very right on all points and I couldn't agree more. To the point where some artists put ridiculous rules on their adopts, it just pisses me off when I see that. The only rule I'll "allow" is that the art be credited to you, it's a fair rule/condition.

Actually, personally speaking from working in coin adopt and adopt amino communities, generated adopts must be free and you cant sell them. Its a basic rule. You must also credit the artist. ALSO also, adopts arent based on how amazing the art is. (Well, it is but thats more just for people who want to sell what they buy) its based on the actual design of the oc your buying, so its not really a ‘money grab’ but just.. making adopts.
Next, the type of ‘take back’ rules are completely banned. Your allowed to refund the person the money given if both sides agree. If that character has more art then your not allowed to. This also revokes the ‘dont sell for more than you paid’ as more is added to the oc.
    I. Hate. ‘Closed’. Species.
Especially pony ones. Most if not all are just.. not original.
I like a lot of closed species, HOWEVER, please. PLEASE. Remember animal hybrids ARENT YOUR OWN SPECIES.

Character creator design adoptable are absolutely unforgivable. I fucking DESPISE people selling character generator designs!! They didn’t make the art, they didn’t draw shit and the whole point of an adoptable design is that it ISN’T something that you could quickly and easily do yourself, like making a Gacha character.
Plus, designs from dress up games usually have derivative or referential items anyway, like some Picrew having Nagito’s jacket as an option, or how you can dress characters in Gacha life up like Miku- so it’s even LESS ORIGINAL.
They don’t own or have the right to sell the designs make on those free to use character creators and it’s disgusting to think they profit off of tricking artists into buying it just to have to interpret and basically redesign the design themselves to make it less generic anyway

  • @eros5025
    @eros5025 3 года назад +6

    I hate closed species-
A majority of closed species are really basic, and as a lot of people are saying, people end up drawing them before knowing it’s a “closed species”.
Like kitty dogs, my main Fursona was originally going to be a cat and a dog because I couldn’t decide, but then later found out it was some species someone had claimed (not closed though.)
Closed species don’t exist legally, since you can’t copyright an idea, and some artists can’t seem to get a hold to that.
If you mess up, accidentally do something close to a closed species, use a f2u base you didn’t know was a closed species, in the discord servers I’m in you will get attacked for it.
Closed species are just... annoying all in all. Like I said, you can’t copyright an idea. Although you can copyright the species, if I changed one single tiny thing, it’s now mine and I can recopyright it.

But another one I saw... Really popular artist, simple design... 80$
I understand the whole, more time = more money

In the price of an adopt, people should be carefull with it and care more about the artiste profile and not only go for the lower price they can have. Depending where the artist lives, 10$ can pay a whole day of work or half an hour. Price can be low if the artist do this on the side with no tax to pay on it or go hight up if art is his career and pay taxes on any income he has.

The concept of adoptables shouldn't be treated different from selling anything else. You sell it, it's not yours anymore and I get why artists are dodgy about it. I find it hard to sell adoptables cuz I get attached to my creations. The buyer should credit you morally speaking, they don't have to legally speaking. Selling adoptables from character generators is potentially illegal, it's not yours. Selling characters that have the same base but different colors is bland, you're just selling a pattern at that point. In my oppinion character prices shouldn't surpass the price of 200 dollars but it isn't illegal to do so, I just feel that much would scare off customers or if you do you better make the best of the best and make your client content.

  • @Talidaga
    @Talidaga 5 лет назад +9

For me I have a couple of points that I don't like of adoptables and closed species but I do have a couple of adopted characters myself so not to say that all of adopts and closed species is bad. The biggest thing for me is if a design is brought and the creator stipulates that the new owner is not allowed to resell the design only trading. For me that's comparable to buying name brand clothing and then they stipulate in your purchase that you're not allowed to resell it at a yard sale or eBay when you no longer want it and is a bit ridiculous. I think that if or when you are wanting to resell a design, not for more than you bought it, should not be something ruled out when buying a design/adopt.
The second frustration is when others combine two animals together or and animal and food or even simple objects with an animal together and then making them a closed species. Such as a dog with a fish tail or a horse with antlers and a dream catcher or a cat with the body of food. They don't, to me, validate that being a closed species. A creature that looks more diverse and unique validates more as a closed species.

A couple were hand drawn, and I tried hand drawing them. But I did realize that most people who wanted the adopts preferred the bases. It could’ve just been out audience, but I don’t know for sure. However, I did hate it when I realized some closed species costed upwards of $300. There was a closed species I thought looked cool, and I was thinking of getting one, but they’re suuuper expensive. They all seem to have a crap load of care and consideration into each design, and I can back that, but sometimes I wonder why it’s hundreds

I don't like the idea of adoptables. I think they can definitely veer towards scam terretory when the price is tood high and the effort is too low. By low effort, I mean using bases and generaters as a limitation for the design. It take more effort to redesign and redraw the body from scratch. If someone just wants a picture of the adoptable that is fine. If they want the picture on a print or some kind of merch, that is fine too. It is no different from buyng any other kind of art from an artist. The problem I have is when someone pays to use someone else's character design for thier own art. That is messed up. An artist is better off designing thier own creatures for thier art. To use some one else's art is so lazy even if they pay for it. The only way I can justify this kind of thing is if there is a huge media project, and there are character designers as part of the team. This is things like movies, tv shows and video games. However for a little solo artist, it is better if they do thier own designs. The idea of adoptable pond ponies does rub me the wrong way. These are clearly based off of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic. It is aubjective on how creative is creative enough. Still if some art seems a bit too much like something else, than that makes it more scammy. Pond ponies are a case of a horse with an affinity with water. This idea is nothing new. The hippocampus is the main example of this. That thing has been around since anchient times. It just isn't as famouns as unicorns and pegasi. The official My Little Pony has hippocampus in rare occasions. Gen four has them in the main movie and in the second Equestria girls movie. I have also seen them in a movie or pilot episode of the first generation. Even I came up with the idea of horases and ponies being based on the hippocampus. I even came up with it before the movie came out. Adoptables really are not my thing. I am currently working on designs for my own legendary creatures. This is something that I am deigning myself. I don't bother paying someone else to do it. I also don't want to sell these creatures either. I don't mind selling prints or merchandies for them. However I will never give up the right to use them in art.

There is nothing wrong with having a closed species for monetary gain, artists still have bills to pay, they gotta earn money somehow. Charging insane prices for something completely unoriginal though is where it goes too far.

I don't like closed species. I have one of my own for stories and things like that, but I don't sell them or allow others to have them and they're pretty unique (looks like a new animal instead of a hybrid). Its just for my own purposes. I buy a lot of adoptables even though I'm an artist because I'm chronically ill and drawing full references is extremely taxing for me. Plus I like cool character designs.
I think the rules for closed species like no reselling are extremely stupid. If I ever sold mine I would give them full ownership of the design, but I'm not planning on it.

I like them and would like to do them at some point. I think $20 is a fair price for most.
The reason I‘d want to do it is since I create character designs I can’t really use in my own work so I like to give them to others to use so the design lives on.

The way I look at adopts and how I make them, I see it as character design work, just like artists who make characters for movies and TV shows or videogames. I'm just someone who doesn't work for a company and likes to make character designs a whole lot. I put a lot of thought into my designs and typically price them as cheap as I can.
When I create adopts, I make my OWN bases for them so I can make them as cheaply as possible. I tend to price my adopts like I would price a commission- depends how long it takes me to make it. Typically, I still underprice myself because I struggle with the fairness of the price by lookers on the outside. They don't know I'm slow and how long it took me to make, so I try to keep that in mind.
When I make adopts, I try my best to make them unique and make them nice like I am a paid character designer. I don't like people who take advantage of customers by making lazy designs with no thought put into them. It makes me feel bad for their consumers, honestly... But hey, they decided to buy them so whatever I guess. My prices vary from 5 to 20 dollars (USD) all entirely depending on the time and effort it took to make them unless it winds up coming out REALLY bland looking.
I just wanted to share my perspective and how I typically make designs if anyone was curious to hear from another who makes art and designs.
(OH, I also wanted to mention that I don't make closed species and I don't really approve of them... In case people are looking for opinions on that. I am not a big fan of controlled creativity and that's how I see closed species as. Usually that can be fine I suppose, guidelines are nice and can wind up making you more creative but putting a price on that in most cases and a paywall behind species is pretty silly imho.)

dont close a closed species because if you close a closed species its bad, but if you dont close a closed species its not a closed species anymore

I think adoptables aren't bad. If you make a character, but don't want it and know you wouldn't draw it again, why not sell it for some extra money if it looks good?
I just think the rules are sometimes bad. "no reselling" if it's sold, then it isn't yours anymore. They payed for it, they can use it however.
But I understand rules like "please don't use for nsfw".
Also one I really agree with is "do not resell for more then bought" because they'd lose money from their work.

As someone who relies heavily on whatever money i can make off my art, i can safely say that adoptables have been a big game changer for me, without the adoptables i make, i don't think i would be in as good of a financial situation as i am in now. Granted, im not making hundreds of dollars every month, most of the time, i would be lucky to make a hundred each month, especially during months where business is very slow. But still, its better than making nothing at all off my own pieces of art that usually takes hours, if not a few days to make, depending on what it is.

Personally I actually like the cheap copy paste adopts, mostly cause it gives me a concept to start out with which I then heavily edit. For instance, I have a mint dog with purple spots I bought for cheap. Very simple design. But I named them Mint Choco Chip and gave them a love of gems and rocks, and the ability to spring up spikes from the spots when threatened. They're a professor at a local university. I don't think I would have come up with that on my own if I had nothing to work with. So personally I don't really care that it's a ploy to get money, cause like, I've been there xD sometimes the bills come in and it's cutting it close.
Same with closed species, my friend runs a cs group and though yes, she charges a high price for the more 'rare' of the species, it's mostly because they have a significant advantage in the arpg that the cs is attached to.
Also yeah I know this vid is 2 years old but I started typing out this comment before I noticed so I'm posting it anyways.

Like... Don't buy a character just because the person who made it is well known!

I made an original species and I call it a closed species. I don’t actually share the full design of the species or it’s name online in order to stop people from stealing it. The species is very special to me because it was the first original species I ever made and put hours of ideas into different designs to find a good mix of ideas to create a character design. If you’d like to see the character I made, you can just look at my profile picture :3. I also only give permission to people I personally know and know they would never claim they made the species.

    Are adoptables a SCAM?
that is a good Question, i would say it depends how much work the artist put in the design of the character.
Many adoptables look like they are created with a generator, they have not really a personal touch what makes them special from the others.
Also if i buy a adoptable then the artist sells me all right to this character, i can do what ever i want with it.
That means i can also sell it again for more money. I never heard that someone need to ask the the manufacturer/producer of something what he owns if he can sell it again and get maybe more money for it.
    And about close species;
I think that is more or less a scam if you need to pay to use this species.
Think about it, if every artist who designed a new species says "that is a closed species, you need to pay me 50$ to design your own character of this species and also a montly fee for using it. before i forgot, all rights to this character belong to me because its my species", what would you do then?
Also what will the artist do if you use the species without paying? Will he/she sue me for that?
We all can agree that you should give credits to the person who created a whole species and the design of a character belongs to the person who designed it, so long the person didn't sold it to another person.

I've both adopted and made adoptables, and never really minded them to begin with. Reason I adopt characters is both because of the art the artist made, but also because designs others have made are designs I'd probably never ever come up with myself. Plus I just find it fun to have new and exciting designs among my characters and not just my own designs.
Closed species I am... Not against, but not fully with either. If I'd make a species and make it official, I'd probably make it Semi-Closed at most. Just have a few rules as to creating them and probably want to verify them as one of the species first. But I'd also not see myself really buy a character from a bigger closed species, solely out of fear to accidently break a rule.
Pond Ponies are an example of those. As one who's a part of the MLP community, I've seen them around and I find them pretty. Orbites as well.
But I'd also never see myself ever getting one because the prices tend to go over 100 USD quite often. But if they sell that well, I don't blame the creators for charging that much. They're usually auction-based anyways, so it's not the creator themselves that really decide if the price is to go that high or not.

I do make adoptables because I like spending time on my designs and experimenting. If there's someone out there interested in a design I have no further use for - great, but if they don't sell... I'll just delete them or rather put them in my "old" folder lol.
I definitely stay away from closed species and people who put weird rules on their designs. Like not being allowed to redesign, resell or literally do anything but reproduce what's already there. So development of the character is basically restricted and that's definitely not why I'm an artist - I want to be creative and free, not restricted. I want my characters to change and develop over time.
I don't think adoptables are a scam everytime - but you definitely have to look up the artist/creator and see if they're chill or not, haha.

Great Insight into the topic :) Personally, if you want a piece of an artist you like, I'd recommend comissioning them rather than buy adoptables. I'm not into adoptables since there's nothing personal (of yourself) about them, neither the idea nor the work. But I think as a "starting OC" they can be pretty neat, if you're not sure how much you're into it and only want to put in the least effort possible to dip your toe in the water.
Can totally agree about the closed species : It shouldn't be purely about money. If you don't want your idea to spread around uncontrollably (for whatever reason), I think it's fine, though.

1.Add value if you want to resell (add artwork or other to properly raise the price, since the og prices are posted and not deleted, hence a refernce to new buyers)
    2. I give certificates of adoption to owners till the 5th one the 5th can still sell it but it is already out of my hands, i am no longer monitoring sales from 6th till the current)*so far it hasn't happened yet tho*
3.Just a simple credit (i mean credit is free right)

Tbh, it depends for me. I like to look at artist's TOS before I have a go on getting the adopt to see if it will be worth it.
To me what makes it a scam is how restrictive it is. My pet peeve when it comes to TOS is some of the very specific rules. One I'm most peeved about is that the person has to draw the oc within a certain amount of time or else the seller will take it back, usually without a refund. If you don't know why that makes me so mad, then read it again until you get it. I legit saw one TOS of an adoptable I like where it was so restrictive, I actually convinced the seller to just keep them. Just this one oc! 🤦🏼

For me, when it comes to adoptables I make sure that is one of a kind, multiple picture as a plus, that is not that base made due to your able to get the base yourself and its free most of the time, and make sure that they're TOS is not crap of the slightest. Overall I think adopts are good for getting your creativeness going when you need help and you've already have a story or concept for it. In my experience adopts have always been a way show love for artist who couldn't no longer take care of they're old character(s) and no not in a hoarding way in anyway.

But the same case might be with question is reselling adoptables for a higher price is good or not (or reselling them in general). You did anything for this design, you just bought it from another artist and then sold it again. Is it right? Morally maybe not really but selling character is selling your rights to it too. New owner can do whatever with that. Similar case is with making an adoptables. Yes, maybe that's not very nice for charging dunno how high price for a simple design but it's they desicion as how much they will cost. It's their possession and they can do with it whatever they want and sell for how much they want. Difference is if someone will buy it if the price is unreasonable higher than it should be. But whether you spend on coming up with the design and then drawing it for hour or few days, it's still yours and you have right to sell it for whatever price you want. If people think this is a scum and cost too much, then they won't buy it and the artist will get their lesson to charge a reasonable price. But if someone will actually buy such character well then good for the artist. He just sold something worth maybe up to 10$ for 50$ and while morally, I would say it's rude and scummy, he could do that and did that at the end. That's my opinion on the topic, sure there are an exception but I cannot think of any right now so nah

Adoptables are perfectly fine themselves, price and how much the artist actually did does not matter though. The only issue with SOME of these are artists who claim to be able to take back designs if you do something they dont like, you cant resell them OR you cannot use them for specific things. (Nsfw art{IF NO ILLEGAL SHIT IS GOING ON}, using it on a business-related items. Some people are way to excessive. If you sell a design you no longer own it, that is clear already by you selling it for someone else to own it and use it. Price should never matter, it is unfair to try and say that its pretty much 'bad' to sell something for a certain price.

I'm trying to get into selling adoptables, everything hand drawn and no bases or anything, I personally like the idea of adoptable auctions. Like you start selling the design at 30 dollars, and the price can go up depending on if anyone is willing to pay more, with an auto buy feature at maybe 100 dollars. That way the price only raises to the triple digits if buyers think it's worth that much.

I think I might set up a deviant art for that! I don’t have a bank account, but I would use it too get video games, and transfer too steam, or get Minecraft accounts etc.

Simple answer: if something doesn’t effect you personally it doesn’t matter, it is not a scam 💀 if you don’t like adopts then don’t get one lol

I’ve been drawing adopts and selling them for cheap bc I use a base most of the time cause, and sometimes from scratch. I would charge to 1-15$. And I don’t really care what people do with them afterwards. Mines don’t really sell much bc of the whole instagram thing. But I just saw is as a chance to get money bc nobody buys commissions from me lol. I still don’t understand what closed species are till this day 😅

I would never sell or buy an adopt with money. Sometimes 100 $ for sometimes not even drawn work, for me it's better to treat it with a pinch of salt

Not too long ago an artist with like 20 followers started claiming that I copied their adoptable that was made in gatcha life ;-; They were probably a little kid so I ignored them.

I think closed species where if it looks like the closed species it is the same as the closed species I mean I have a closed species where you just can’t use the same name as the closed species

Does it matter how much the design is objectively worth?
Either a customer is willing to pay for it or it is not.
