I'm actually living for this albino Audrey now. Since she'd need a redesign anyway to add this into her bio the artist could always lighten up her hair a few shades, or just say it's artistic liberty. I still like the idea of her being not-quite-human but it appears it hasn't truly manifested yet, so the albinism would explain her so far more than the half-human thing.
The first character Audrey is from a youtuber called LovelyLauren, she has actually improved a lot, the story has too. Improvement does happen, and there is more to the story.
Shes a cool animator but her artstyle is insanely unappealing. IMO at least Editing to add on to what I said, biggest problem is her eyes are very detailed, while her anatomy is severely lacking and she puts no detail into everything else. That style can work sometimes but just not with hers.
Shes improved a little, mostly with art and animation (some of the animation memes arent too bad). I'll admit I havent grasped the full story with her characters, but they all seem to have the same two things in common; theyre young and something horrible happened to them. It just gets a little repetitive and makes me wonder if the other characters are really even necessary.
It's fine to have a dark backstory for your character, plenty of well-written characters out there have dark stories behind them But there's a fine line between a dark backstory and an emotionally manipulative one If your using a backstory to make you feel sorry for a character, rather than to give insight on why a character acts the way they do, it's kind of bad writing in itself. Of course, I'm not an expert, and this is purely my opinion, so take this with a grain of salt
Eh... It really depends. Sometimes using a dark backstory to make you feel sorry for a character really can help and serve their story. I guess it's better if you empathize with a character in the end, not sympathize with them, but that's just a general guideline, not a rule.

Especially when the character is from a movie or video game. Like Purple guy from fnaf or Jeff from creepy pasta.
My OC's don't even have a "sexuality" bracket. Who they like shows up in their actions or what they say outright in the story. I dunno, I always found listing a sexuality to a character to be weird, like they themselves would think it's awkward that their sexual business is flapping out in the open like it's on a grocery list.

Ik! there are just so darn many OCS that have super dark or tragic backstories it's getting really boring (Actually, whenever I create an OC I try to add the absolute minimum, sure you can and in some instances SHOULD add some dark and tragic stuff to make it realistic, but all just DRAMA DARKNESS AND TRAGEDY isn't realistic, and in my opinion, I think there shall be a balance between positive and negative elements in a character's backstory)
There's a fine balance with these tragic backstories that can be obtained. The issue with these characters for the most part is that their backstories are an excuse to just design their character all emotionally, when in reality you only need a little bit of subtlety to create a decent, complex character. I'll use my own character as an example: An Imperial Watchmaster which is basically an Inquisition agent. He's a more cold, calculating person, which is perfect for his role as an Watchmaster. His more cold demeanor towards "friends" displays a sense of either mistrust, or inability to make said friends. I don't have to delve so heavily into his backstory of "was abandoned by his parents that were escaping a war" and what not to properly show his character and make people understand why he's like that.

In the case of the zombie OC... I think the idea is that she happens to be a zombie with accelerated-healing powers. But if that regeneration fully *brings her back to life,* she loses her undead-immortality (ironically killing her) So she counteracts the healing via self-mutilation, to retain her immortal zombie form Its honestly a super interesting idea; just explained rather poorly. (But English doesn't seem to be that person's 1st language, so they get a pass)
Like the Deadpool concept, his regeneration are really just cells multiplying at a steady rate compared to the damage the cancer gives him. So in other words if a normal person who had nothing wrong with then had the power of Deadpool they would die over the excessive amount of any cells. In other words you need a life threatening disease or injury that will stick with you forever so you can handle Deadpool's regenerative powers. I know right, they stifle themselves to set categories with already existing species (whether real or not) like if you don't know, show how it affects the story and say why in the story. Or even better, make your own species up, because it's possible! And most likely even your experimental abomination will have a name from its creators, or leave it out if you're not sure! Only one of my characters is LGBT and they're bi. I only ever made the rest straight because I think it's more important to focus on their backstory and personality and I don't care enough to give them a specific sexuality, and straight is a default for me so I just choose that :P

I like getting criticism because it not only helps my art improve but it also helps me widen my thoughts and perspective on different subjects. I guess it kinda helps me grow as a person.

I like how they lit have disabilities listed as a character trait? Like to actually have an oc, it has to have disabilities? Idk it just seems strange, and in a way reminds of me those 'disabilities are trendy' or something. I assume its not what they are going for, but still.
Too often I see the popularity of characters with mental disorders linked with the same kind of morbid fascination people have with freak shows. No attempt is made to give them real personalities other than "they're cRaZy and unrelatable!" which makes them feel more like an object to gawk at than a believable person that struggles with and/or overcomes their disorder and how this plays into who they are. Ignoring how harmful this might be to someone who actually has these disorders and is constantly being compared to a monster, it makes for a boring character and a boring story. As an example of a character with a mental disorder done right: I have an OC named Dorian who is a sociopath. He's a mad scientist and a villain, but he's not some evil bastard that goes on killing sprees for fun. He's driven by a goal and he's willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that goal, even at the cost of others and his own humanity, because he has no concept for what "humanity" even is. He ends up getting a clone of his consciousness stuck in a robot and his original human self betrays him for profit, because due to his sociopathy, he has no regard for his own self the same way he has no regard for the people around him. This serves as a wake-up call and teaches Dorian what he never understood before: empathy. Of course, he's also a stubborn bullheaded dick, so his first idea is to get revenge and kill his original human self, but later he realizes that doing so would make him no different than the man he once was, so to truly defeat him, he must become a better version of himself. Yes, Dorian is crazy, and yes, he does some really messed up things, but the difference is that you can see WHY he does the things he does. His disorder is linked with, but does NOT, overshadow his personality and potential. When making your character, always ask "why" as many times as you possibly can when you give them a trait. Crack them open like an egg and see what makes them tick!
Me too has a "mad" scientist character. However his problems are a bit different (def has a bloodlust that leads him to kill people for "fun"). But it took me some time to work out how to explain, rationally and with sensibility, why he is how he is. And what can i say… my character started out as an uber-edgy CrAzY psycho. Many of us have been there. I didn't know much about certain personality disorders or clinical conditions. I only knew I wanted to have a super edgy mad scientist character, who wails in the blood of poor specimens and doee evil, mad edgy science. Because I was young and being young makes you ignorant and way too lazy for proper research. Most of these OCs I bet were created by young people. Or people with rudimentary practice and experience in writing/world building. If you are in such a stage you won't be able to ask the relevant questions regarding your characters motives and behaviour and work out the important parts of their personality. You take the shortcut and go with the most common tropes and clichés. It takes infinitely more time to pounder deeply about your characters aspirations, motivations and goals and how their choices will influence the plot (and their relationship with other characters) than to take basically a stock plot and paste your archetypical clichéd characters into it. And the common clichés surrounding mental illness are, as we all know, informed by society's ignorant views on it. And because some idiots thing being ill makes you special. As said, I was once one of them so I know.
Asteria Very true, and I know all of the ones in this video were made by kids, but I've actually seen my fair share of people my age (in their 20's) that still make edgy characters like those. It's true that society does a shitty job in public health education, but when it takes as little effort as 3 minutes to google something to find out what it really is before you use it in your story, I have a hard time believing that excuse from anyone over the age of 15. Part of the reason this happens is because those people don't care enough and are just messing around for fun, which is fine, but then you get the ones who want to take pride in their art and lock themselves in an echo chamber together where they never learn any better. Winter X Hey I just wanted to say thank you for taking your time to post this comment. Because this actually did help me seal my own OC's character traits and motives (Who is also a sociopath). Of course when I thought about this character, I did my research on sociopaths. At the time I was ok with his character traits but the more I thought of him the more I realized he just wasn't so interesting. Because he lacked any sort of motive (Except for being a douche to the Main Character cause he is a douche). With your comment I came to the realization that with his sociopathic traits I could connect them with his motives(I mostly connected his sociopathic traits with his actions, basically what my character lacked was any reason for what he is doing) making him a much more interesting character to write and am honestly happy with how he's turning out to be. Seriously, my idea of him before your comment was dangerously leaning towards him being a good guy but with a lack of empathy (not completely) and a snarky/sarcastic/smartass attitude. Edit: I accidentally added an and on one of the sentences.
I have several problems including depression and autism and also a learning disability so I don't know why people romanticise these things so much, it's pretty shit. Having to deal with things like these since childhood is very difficult. I always want characters that are relatable but they never explore these kinds of backstories much.

Ariana Angel Augustine I feel like she needs to injure herself in order to be "immortal" because her body is dying but she heals constantly from her injuries and thus her body becomes more human, so you can kill her if she's healthy. She's dead but she's slowly coming back to life in a way.
The way I interpreted it from the description, Vivi has achieved something of a "negative life", a state where she must regress instead of grow in order to prevent herself from becoming a traditional corpse. Thus, what defines her as healthy or ill has been completely inverted; her body's natural regeneration has become the new way of starving, while her injuries are the new form of nourishment/applying bandages.
How I took it is that she has regenerative powers that she loses when she is fully healed, meaning that being completely alone would render her vulnerable.
YALL. As a writer and someone who draws reference art for my characters, THE REFERENCE ART DOES NOT TELL THE CHARACTER'S STORY. Or, sometimes it might give a summary, but other times it won't. That is a story the creator made, and the reference art is only to get to know the character a little bit; just to know who they are. If the creator is writing the story or even putting their characters in animations, the ref. art most likely won't spill the beans on the character's life. Because if you are interested and look into that story, you, the reader or watcher, get to see that for yourself. We creators don't want to spoil that. Personally, I like to create two ref. sheets. One for my eyes only, and one for viewers. I like to hide certain things about the character from public eye until the full story is known. It makes people want to know more about the character. How did they get to this point, who are they really, how do their relationships work out? So don't go bashing the fact that the ref. art isn't telling you the full story.
So, I *think* I got the idea of the zombie girl. She is a video game character and has hit points. She has a game genie and doesn't die even if her HP drops below zero. And she automatically heals her HP, too. So one day some wizard realized that was bs and figured she needed to be nerfed. He did this with really messed up curse: she can keep her ability to live with negative HP and even continue to heal. BUT if her healing ever brings her HP above 0, she will die permanently. Megadeath or something. Thus, she can live with typically fatal injuries, but she can ONLY live with fatal injuries; if they heal to the point of being nonfatal, she will die 100%-for-real-no take-backsies. So her healing functions closer to poison and causing herself pain actually increases her longevity. Opposite day. That right?
So I think I figured out the deal with the zombie one. Pretty sure when they say she needs to be in a "Dying state", they mean that in order to live, her body needs to always be severely damaged in a way that would kill a normal human. A unique idea, but it just should've been worded better. That's just my theory though.

What's up with people making dark backstory for their character?? It got to a point where it starts to be boring.
Ik! there are just so darn many OCS that have super dark or tragic backstories it's getting really boring (Actually, whenever I create an OC I try to add the absolute minimum, sure you can and in some instances SHOULD add some dark and tragic stuff to make it realistic, but all just DRAMA DARKNESS AND TRAGEDY isn't realistic, and in my opinion, I think there shall be a balance between positive and negative elements in a character's backstory)

There's a fine balance with these tragic backstories that can be obtained. The issue with these characters for the most part is that their backstories are an excuse to just design their character all emotionally, when in reality you only need a little bit of subtlety to create a decent, complex character.
I'll use my own character as an example: An Imperial Watchmaster which is basically an Inquisition agent. He's a more cold, calculating person, which is perfect for his role as an Watchmaster. His more cold demeanor towards "friends" displays a sense of either mistrust, or inability to make said friends. I don't have to delve so heavily into his backstory of "was abandoned by his parents that were escaping a war" and what not to properly show his character and make people understand why he's like that.
NotAllArmiesAreToxic here’s my opinion on it, it’s fine to have a character with a darker backstory to explain how they act but making a character to purely be “look at how dark and tortured my character is” is bad writing. Making a character purely based off of their misfortune and nothing else is as bad as writing a villain meant to be bad and nothing else

Step 2: Add unnecessary accessories everywhere, make sure they always clutter up the important details. (Tip: Add an eyepatch.)
Step 3: Make them have a really sad backstory.
**MUST INCLUDE**
At least one of their parents are died.
At least one of their parents are abusive.
If both parents are died, make their stepparents abusive.
Make sure they get bullied at school.
Also make sure every single character has a crush on them. (Even their bullies)
Step 4: Make them half of every single animal in the world.
Step 5: Make them have no personality or goal whatsoever.
Step 6: Make them have every single ability in your universe. (Tip: If they don’t have every ability since their birth, make them a child prodigy and have them learn every single ability when they just have finished kindergarten.)
Step 7: Don’t add any flaws to the character, it will make them imperfect. (Tip: If you do want some flaws, make them clumsy.)
Step 8: Smash your head onto your keyboard for a very creative and easy to pronounce name.
There! Now you have your totally very enjoyable and original OC!

I agree. To me, being an artist means being able to take a little criticism so that your skills and talent can grow. I also think art should be fun and not always stressful. I like getting criticism because it not only helps my art improve but it also helps me widen my thoughts and perspective on different subjects. I guess it kinda helps me grow as a person.

Too often I see the popularity of characters with mental disorders linked with the same kind of morbid fascination people have with freak shows. No attempt is made to give them real personalities other than "they're cRaZy and unrelatable!" which makes them feel more like an object to gawk at than a believable person that struggles with and/or overcomes their disorder and how this plays into who they are. Ignoring how harmful this might be to someone who actually has these disorders and is constantly being compared to a monster, it makes for a boring character and a boring story.
As an example of a character with a mental disorder done right: I have an OC named Dorian who is a sociopath. He's a mad scientist and a villain, but he's not some evil bastard that goes on killing sprees for fun. He's driven by a goal and he's willing to do whatever it takes to achieve that goal, even at the cost of others and his own humanity, because he has no concept for what "humanity" even is. He ends up getting a clone of his consciousness stuck in a robot and his original human self betrays him for profit, because due to his sociopathy, he has no regard for his own self the same way he has no regard for the people around him. This serves as a wake-up call and teaches Dorian what he never understood before: empathy. Of course, he's also a stubborn bullheaded dick, so his first idea is to get revenge and kill his original human self, but later he realizes that doing so would make him no different than the man he once was, so to truly defeat him, he must become a better version of himself.
Yes, Dorian is crazy, and yes, he does some really messed up things, but the difference is that you can see WHY he does the things he does. His disorder is linked with, but does NOT, overshadow his personality and potential. When making your character, always ask "why" as many times as you possibly can when you give them a trait. Crack them open like an egg and see what makes them tick!
Me too has a "mad" scientist character. However his problems are a bit different (def has a bloodlust that leads him to kill people for "fun"). But it took me some time to work out how to explain, rationally and with sensibility, why he is how he is.
And what can i say… my character started out as an uber-edgy CrAzY psycho. Many of us have been there. I didn't know much about certain personality disorders or clinical conditions. I only knew I wanted to have a super edgy mad scientist character, who wails in the blood of poor specimens and doee evil, mad edgy science. Because I was young and being young makes you ignorant and way too lazy for proper research.
Most of these OCs I bet were created by young people. Or people with rudimentary practice and experience in writing/world building. If you are in such a stage you won't be able to ask the relevant questions regarding your characters motives and behaviour and work out the important parts of their personality. You take the shortcut and go with the most common tropes and clichés.
It takes infinitely more time to pounder deeply about your characters aspirations, motivations and goals and how their choices will influence the plot (and their relationship with other characters) than to take basically a stock plot and paste your archetypical clichéd characters into it. And the common clichés surrounding mental illness are, as we all know, informed by society's ignorant views on it. And because some idiots thing being ill makes you special. As said, I was once one of them so I know.
Asteria Very true, and I know all of the ones in this video were made by kids, but I've actually seen my fair share of people my age (in their 20's) that still make edgy characters like those. It's true that society does a shitty job in public health education, but when it takes as little effort as 3 minutes to google something to find out what it really is before you use it in your story, I have a hard time believing that excuse from anyone over the age of 15.
Part of the reason this happens is because those people don't care enough and are just messing around for fun, which is fine, but then you get the ones who want to take pride in their art and lock themselves in an echo chamber together where they never learn any better. I posted my comment in hopes one of them might see it and realize there can be so much more fun to be had if they ever choose to get serious.

Winter X Hey I just wanted to say thank you for taking your time to post this comment. Because this actually did help me seal my own OC's character traits and motives (Who is also a sociopath).
Of course when I thought about this character, I did my research on sociopaths. At the time I was ok with his character traits but the more I thought of him the more I realized he just wasn't so interesting. Because he lacked any sort of motive (Except for being a douche to the Main Character cause he is a douche). With your comment I came to the realization that with his sociopathic traits I could connect them with his motives(I mostly connected his sociopathic traits with his actions, basically what my character lacked was any reason for what he is doing) making him a much more interesting character to write and am honestly happy with how he's turning out to be.
Seriously, my idea of him before your comment was dangerously leaning towards him being a good guy but with a lack of empathy (not completely) and a snarky/sarcastic/smartass attitude.

I have several problems including depression and autism and also a learning disability so I don't know why people romanticise these things so much, it's pretty shit. Having to deal with things like these since childhood is very difficult. I always want characters that are relatable but they never explore these kinds of backstories much.

Ariana Angel Augustine I feel like she needs to injure herself in order to be "immortal" because her body is dying but she heals constantly from her injuries and thus her body becomes more human, so you can kill her if she's healthy. She's dead but she's slowly coming back to life in a way.
The way I interpreted it from the description, Vivi has achieved something of a "negative life", a state where she must regress instead of grow in order to prevent herself from becoming a traditional corpse. Thus, what defines her as healthy or ill has been completely inverted; her body's natural regeneration has become the new way of starving, while her injuries are the new form of nourishment/applying bandages.
To my understanding, all her wounds being completely healed would kill her. To stay alive as a zombie, she must continuously hurt herself
How I took it is that she has regenerative powers that she loses when she is fully healed, meaning that being completely alone would render her vulnerable.

As a writer and someone who draws reference art for my characters, THE REFERENCE ART DOES NOT TELL THE CHARACTER'S STORY. Or, sometimes it might give a summary, but other times it won't. That is a story the creator made, and the reference art is only to get to know the character a little bit; just to know who they are. If the creator is writing the story or even putting their characters in animations, the ref. art most likely won't spill the beans on the character's life. Because if you are interested and look into that story, you, the reader or watcher, get to see that for yourself. We creators don't want to spoil that. Personally, I like to create two ref. sheets. One for my eyes only, and one for viewers. I like to hide certain things about the character from public eye until the full story is known. It makes people want to know more about the character. How did they get to this point, who are they really, how do their relationships work out? So don't go bashing the fact that the ref. art isn't telling you the full story.

So, I *think* I got the idea of the zombie girl.
She is a video game character and has hit points. She has a game genie and doesn't die even if her HP drops below zero. And she automatically heals her HP, too.
So one day some wizard realized that was bs and figured she needed to be nerfed. He did this with really messed up curse: she can keep her ability to live with negative HP and even continue to heal. BUT if her healing ever brings her HP above 0, she will die permanently. Megadeath or something.
Thus, she can live with typically fatal injuries, but she can ONLY live with fatal injuries; if they heal to the point of being nonfatal, she will die 100%-for-real-no take-backsies. So her healing functions closer to poison and causing herself pain actually increases her longevity. Opposite day.
That right?

So I think I figured out the deal with the zombie one. Pretty sure when they say she needs to be in a "Dying state", they mean that in order to live, her body needs to always be severely damaged in a way that would kill a normal human. A unique idea, but it just should've been worded better. That's just my theory though.
