    Could you make a video for artist just starting to do commisions? Like how to work with costumers in a positive way and how to deal with negative customers?

      Just be respectful but if the client is excessively rude or does not comply with your rules then you have every right to terminate that transaction. You can be courteous, respectful and professional but that does not mean you should be a pushover.

      @@witchby9362 Awesome that's my dream job though I'm not good yet.. and I've gotta finish my (short) IT career so I can afford to go to art school, art is something I like, but I just started drawing like two years ago, I mean like for reals when I said I wanna get good at it, and I'm not at the skill level where I want to be obviosly I know is gonna take me years I'm not some kinda idiot who wants to learn something as complicated in a couple of years by himself (these two past years). I wish you the best of luck to you :3. If I start to get commissions in the future and I don't care for how much I'd be the happiest man in the world : D. Gosh, I wish more people had these kind of things in mind! One of the problems I face when people commission me is them wanting to change the pose(s) near the end stages and then them getting mad at me for not allowing it. I'm not going to redo all my work lol, especially when I check in with my clients beforehand. I appreciated this video!

    Also a little tip: When you commission someone, if there’s something you dislike, TELL THEM. You’re asking them to make something, and you’re paying them for it. Just don’t be rude. Be polite.
    Example:
    You commission someone for a fursuit of a deer. You’re getting pictures, you know. Then, 2 weeks later, they send you a picture of the head. You see the antlers are a bit too far back.
    Don’t: Say it’s good and move on. This makes the person you’re commission think you like everything about it.
    Do: Tell them about it.
    You say, “Hey, I notice the antlers are a bit far back. Can you reposition it to line up with _____?” They fix it for you, and you like the fursuit much more now that it’s fixed.
    See what happened when you told the person what you wanted fixed? Tell them about things you want moved or changed, just be polite.
    (I’ve never commission anyone, but I hope this is good advice.)

  • @hondragrid
    @hondragrid 5 лет назад +42

    (oh boy...here goes Hondra making suggestions again xD )4:51 When mentioning the sketch phase and the line phase, you should have put up example of what Sketch art would look like and then what the cleaned up line art would look like. The reason I suggest it is so people who are new to commissioning have a clear idea of exactly what those phases you're referring to are.
    And to go with what Neffers is saying, those are the two stages where changes are easy. Once you give the ok in the line art phase, that's it! There is no redos or turning back after the line phase! You can ask for changes after the line art phase but a few things will happen. First off the artist will want to snap your neck. Secondly changes might not be possible, or you're going to have to cough up more cash as the changes in the color phase will require a TON of work. I suggest taking your time and thinking it over and being very critical in the line phase. Take a few hours to look the image over real close. Go do something else and then come back later to look it over one last time. Treat the ok's on the line phase as there is no turning back. The only real changes you can request in the color phase is well...the colors. I REPEAT there is nothing wrong with asking for changes during both the sketch phase and the line phase. Once you ok the Lines, you're locked in!

    • @PersoMena
      @PersoMena 3 года назад +2

      To answer those two people who are trying to justify different timezones as an excuse to not respond to an artist's message, I say: if you're in a different timezone, fine, but a message from an artist shouldn't sit longer than twenty-four hours without being answered. They asked you a question at three pm their time, but it was midnight where you were so you didn't see it? Read and answer it as soon as you get out of bed (after some caffeine if you need to make sure you're functional first). They had a progress report to show you but it came in right before you had to go to work or bed? Go to work or go to bed, but leave a note to yourself that you must answer them when you get home or wake up.

      @NebulaInTokyo Agreed, but I think the person meant multiple days. If you're at a point where you can't talk to them for several days, you probably need to wait. I have weird luck of people forgetting markings on my sonas. They don’t send me WIPS for the coloring stage so I’m always having to remind people just in case in the way beginning of it all. My refs are very clear and my designs are fairly simple but ahh my OCD just has to notice when something is missing. I’m scared if I speak up and tell them they missed a lil something they would think I’m ungrateful. I try to go in sometimes and fix it myself but still doesn’t feel great.

  • @StormEngineer

    As a full time artist, I think you summed things up pretty well. The only thing I want to add is just to emphases even more how important it is that you TELL the artist if something is not how you want it. There is nothing worse than when I think all is well, and go on to complete the work, while the client as actually not happy with it but are afraid to say so.
    Just make sure you are friendly and constructive in your feedback. Eg. instead of saying "The leg is wrong", say "That leg doesn't feel right. Could you please [explain how it should be instead]?" Also, ask yourself if you have given clear instructions and references? Did you communicate it poorly? If so, admit your mistake, phrase it like eg. "I might have explained this poorly, what I actually meant was [clear explanation]. Could you please adjust it?" And keep in mind that if you make them do extra work because you failed to give good instructions, they may charge you for that change, and that's on you.
    And finally, if you were respectful, friendly and constructive, and the artist reacts badly, that's their fault, not yours. If you clearly explained something and they messed up, they have no right to be angry at you for asking a fox, nor should you accept that. If it is their fault, respectfully stand your ground. Eg.: "I'm sorry, but I asked you [repeat the instruction they failed to follow], so please correct that, thank you."
    It's often a problem for me that clients had a bad experience with an artist who screwed things up and then reacted angrily when it was pointed out, so they are afraid to point mistakes out to me, and I need to insist that they let me know. Don't be intimidated, you are a customer who pays for a specific service, if the artist messes up, it is within your right to ask for correction. And any artist with a proper attitude will want to know so they can fix it.

    As a fursuit maker/artist myself my biggest thing is remember that for lots of artists its not their full time job. I have fulltime college, and a job and other things ontop of commissions so I don't have time to just chat about non commission related things (as much as I wish I could!). I had to write it in my tos as I have had people message me constantly all day every day about random things and I end up not being able to get much work done on their suit as everytime I put down my phone to work on the suit, I get messaged again xD. But people seem to still not be reading my tos.

    To use you yourself as an example Neff, I've got a huge hoard of art still waiting from you...some of it years in waiting
    but because so many people are so impatient andw ant their work done in a day or a week or whatever, you need to do it just to get them out of the way, whereas people like me are still
    "so uh...that ref sheet I commissioned 2 years ago?"
    people REALLY need to realize that the artist's commission time does not revolve around them the instant they hand over the $$$

    Bit of my appinion but I think its worth saying. If an artist does not give WIP'S for critisism, it's okay to ask for changes on the final piece! Yeah it's a lot to change for them by then, but you have the right to comment, you are the customer. If they never asked for feedback on whips then that's on them for letting you give critisism this late. I've had a commision where I recieved a finished product, but the markings were notably wrong, a very specific marking unique to him had been replaced with a colour fade. Yeah, that needs changing... The artist was nice about it though and it turned out fine! Just a notion that it's not wrong to give critisism on a final piece if you never recieved a wip to begin with, especially if the issue is genuinely problematic (like an incorrect marking)

    Hey neffertity, if you read these I’d like to make a suggestion. Can you please make a video on how to start taking commissions. I know you’ve already done one but could you make one that covers more on how to start taking them. I’ve been wanting to recently but I can’t figure out how.

    What videos and other RUclips channels would you recommend for someone starting out on making plushies? I'm getting started because as a kid no one made the stuffed animals/plushies that I wanted so now I'm hoping to be able to make that unique one for other children from 5-whatever years old.

    Hey... I feel rude when I tell the people I'm commissioning to "Change this" or "I don't like that" so I often just say "Oml I love it!" Or "It so cool!" even if there is something I don't like about it... I mean I am an artist myself and it does not seem rude to me when people tell me, But when I say it to other people...;-;

      i feel the same way. when i commission an artist i most of the time like the drawings ,but when there is some parts that i don't like. for example, hair color or some missing parts and then tell them to add/change it. i feel really bad and anxious for saying it thinking the artist might hate me

    i don't know a lot about art but sometimes when iv seen someones art on DA and iv thought oh this may work better next time as this has already been use in the artwork or have seen it used in other bits of work by the same person or other people i leave a message on the post , i start of by saying what i like about the art work then offer constructive criticism of what could have worked better
    for example a character in the art work has very bright clothing and the eyes are a light colour that is hard to see because of all the bright colours yet on the same piece have a character that wears dark clothing with light coloured eye to contrast the dark clothing, suggesting the use of a darker shade of the light characters eye colour to contrast the light clothing

    Why would I have a reference sheet if I’m trying to commission an artist? Isn’t that their job?

    • @Neffertity
      @Neffertity  Год назад

      If you're looking to commission a reference sheet you need to have at least something to give the artist.
      They aren't psychic. And can't read your mind for whatever your character looks like.
      Providing things like images of animals or people you want as a base, color palletes, images of clothing or accessories, etc.
      Even rough sketches and scribbles can help the artist visualize what you need. And this help create a first time ref sheet.
      But giving them nothing and saying "Y U NO DRAW MAH OC RIGHT?!?!?!" Doesn't really help either party.
      References matter.
