So glad no one called my Dutchie 'a Spyro'. He purple with orange/yellow/gold on him, but not once did anyone say he looked like Spyro. He has inspiration and elements from a character, but has enough changes to be original and I am so proud of him.

Sometimes I make a character looking just like one I didn't know existed then I get a "You copied [insert person here]'s design!"

This happened to me a few months ago on my tiktok (shameless plug my tiktok has the same name as my YT name).
My main fursona is a Cat + Dragon that i just threw wings on bc it's cute. Someone out of nowhere was like "You're character looks like Winza".. ngl i had no idea who that was until i google searched "Winza", ironically enough it's one of Nefertity's characters- I looked at hers and looked at mine then just said "How?" like- my character doesn't even have the same colors, horns, face shape, patterns, eye shape, eye colors, tail, claws, body type, heck they're not even the same species!
I guess all dark colored, fluffy dragons with pink on them look the same?
*(the pink on my fursona is a pastel, while on Winza it's a hot pink)
"Omg that looks like my oc!"

"Oh... Um... Mine has blue hair too?"
I get those comments so much about my raptor character.
Then you look at the "totally the same" character and they maybe have a similar color pallete.

All my oc have atleast one thing in common to avoid confusion

I've herd of a thing called Pose "Stealing"
Theres only so many ways the body can bend.

I've had this happen to me too many times. And I've witnessed it as well. Someone told me that my main oc(Swift the velociraptor) looked like their oc just because Swift is blue with yellow eyes and their oc was a freaking dragon that had different shades of blue and a orange eyes!!! Like are you serious!?!?!???!!! Swift is a blue VELOCIRAPTOR and your oc is a blue DRAGON!!!!
Really digging the animation change! Its a nice little improvement. I like it! (Joking comparison) Oh ya! Neffers looks like a blue jay with an 80's style Mohawk with Egyptian make up on the eyes! Huzzah! Come at me!

My dragon sona always gets compared to Spyro. “It’s a Spyro oc” “you copied spyro” “isn’t that based on Spyro?”
It looks nothing alike except that the muzzle is square like spyro’s instead of long and pointed XD I honestly don’t get the comparison.
I understand this so much, you have no idea how many times someone has said, "Oh! Your Oc looks just like *insert character here*" when all that is the slightest bit similar is how the eyes are green and UGH-
I had a charecter that "looked like that animators charecters" Just because they were the same species. And it was just a mythical creature oni. This was the only thing similar about the characters, and I almost got banned for "stealing her oc". So yeah.. Stuff like this sucks..

I feel this so much. Particularly when someone makes the " it looks like ( insert vague unwatchable reference here) ". I've had this recently in an Inktober sketch I posted on Amino. I asked the commenter what they were referencing and received an even more vague response, so I asked a different way ( assuming they may not understand what I was asking) and got " Don't worry about it, you'll see ". I still haven't a clue, so all I can assume is they were being a troll.

Omg i get this all the time,i get comparisons to Beauty off the bass. Yeah i get we have the same colour pallet and the same smile, but the reason behind that is because we both had the same inspiration which is The Smiler hence the spiral eyes and smile because that’s apart of the rides universe. But I don’t understand, it because we are two completely different species , i have wings, i have mechanical parts,i have different markings,different anatomy,E.G.
So yeah i get why people think that, but bass didn’t have the individual idea for the smile and the spiral eyes, No, that’s because that’s the rides logo and part of the whole rides theming.

I get this a lot with Vinny on how he looks like the red bird from angry birds all because my bird is mostly red and just so happens to have thick black eyebrows. When I see Vinny now I can't unsee it and it kinda makes me upset cuz I worked really hard on his design to make him unique and stuff. :(

It would be stupid if someone compared wing shapes to an actual bird in real life. 😑
I've had my brown and black angel dragon with stripes compared to a black and white angel dragon with spots that looks nothing alike and I got called a thief it made me mad because I spent days thinking of a unique design and then to just get called a thief is unfair
Random person: “Oh hey this OC looks like (insert popular RUclipsr)’s OC!”
Me: “How so?”
Random person: “Oh they’re both yellow and black”
Me: “But my OC is a reptilian creature with splotches of fur on it that can shoot wires out of their shoulders-
And the other OC is a bird-“
Oh my gosh!! I've had people tell me, "Oh wow your character really reminds me of Maka from Soul Eater!" And I honestly don't know why multiple people have said this to me. My character is a blue, monkey cat girl with green hair and intense digitigrade legs. The only thing similar is their weapon of choice, which is a scythe... sept my character's scythe is a sacred tree branch that transforms into the scythe thus the scythe is very organic looking.
For the burn scar, I feel like more people would say Todoroki now

People are obsessed with making stupid comparisons like that.
This always happens to me. I have this friend who, when looking at my art, always says stuff like “oh that character reminds me of [insert character of a random anime that I have never watched]”. It’s really annoying, once she compared one of my characters to 02 just because they both had horns, disregarding the fact that my character had short white and blue hair, while 02 has long pink hair and that their outfits looked nothing alike.
people must not realize the difference between inspiration and plagiarism. there's one thing to be like that character has one or more traits of another character with many changes to prevent any similarities, and there a character just has 100% of that other character's traits just to have it without any changes to them.

Okay, I really like this series! When it comes to this topic, I will admit that I make a comparison comment every now and then but I make sure that its a legitimate comparison. I just find it to be an interesting thing for an artist to think about especially when the artist even sees the similarity instantaneously as soon as you bring it up.
i made a character once that looked nothing like scorge and someone insisted my character was just scorge ;-; i loved her but i got rid of her because of pressure than the person
On one hand I think Scourge doesn´t have an official design as he is a book character and he looks like whatever way each reader imagines him. On other hand, don´t let yourself get pressured by one single person on internet, there are a lot of jerks outthere that tries to push us down everyday but we don´t have to take decisions according to what they tell us.
Let me encourge you to take back your character and just block that guy on your social media or just don´t care about him (or her) :)
@@FreeFoxRagu Scourge from Warriors? I had some books that were like comic warrior books and Scourge was depicted in it. So he eventually, and other cats, got some direct character designs on paper. But yeah I agree should just block the person bullying them.

Haha.... this reminds me of the time I drew a really colorful dress based on an animal and, to avoid just having the dress floating in the middle of the image, added in a plain black mannequin to wear the dress.
I posted it, and someone came in and said "looks like Slenderman" because the mannequin had a featureless, smooth face. That's it.
Featureless face = Slenderman, regardless of clothes and skin color, apparently.

I remember recently comparing someone's artstyle to disney. Went something like "Your art style is really nice, reminds me of disney." Is that bad? I wanna make sure I don't do it again if it is
It can be a compliment to some, and an insult to others.
Some people may hate Disney and get upset when compared to them.

For reference Mizutsune is spoken as Mit-sue-neigh. Its a really annoying name to get right but thats how i think its said. That being said its much easier than some of the japanese names have for some monsters... those are scary to even attempt!

When I made one of my ocs, Astro, I was super worried that people would say she looked like Kittydog, because she has pink, blue, purple and white as a color pallet. Nobody. Said. Anything. So uhhh I was lucky- (like she is a cat/dog/wolf thing, but the way I made cats/wolves back then looked similar so I kinda forgot what she originally was💀-)
One of my old sonas was a purple and gold bird and the amount of people that harassed me on Twitter because it was “a copy of spyro”! I had to scrap the sona because I couldn’t handle it. IT LITERALLY WASNT EVEN A DRAGON LIKE- UJUDEFJEFNFJENNNVFEJVUN

And oh no... I have a like... "symbol" that has a little similarity with Neff's eye markings, it's a water drop-thing with that swirl pattern and has scarily similar colors to Neff's markings....

Three years later for me, lol... I have a fursona whom I have named Toytrap Starline! At first, he was mostly purple, had a red bow tie, and two different colored eyes. People made comparisons with Bonnie to my character. I saw what they were talking about. They were both mainly purple bunnies, both with a red bow tie. So I remade him in an extreme jump! Now, Toytrap is a fox / Rabbit Hybrid (I call a Rabbix) with a very long tail, a star necklace, and an added ponytail at the back. The belly, inside of the ears, the tip of the poofy top hair, the tip of the ponytail, the tip of the tail, the hands and feet, are all now a mint green! There are also mint greed splotches and swirls added with the other mint parts (besides the belly, snout, and ears) and long tufs of blue fur inside the ears. And now my character gets compared to Roxanne Wolf. A wolf with Grey purple fur, almost a purple white for the belly, snout, and tip of the tail. Having tiger like purple stripes on her calfs, with lots of jewelry. She has long hair too. Wanna know what color that is? Just like her belly. But she also has A GREEN STRIPE IN HER HAIR 😱😱😱 I MUST HAVE COPIED HER?!?! Even though I made Toytrap's new design before she even existed... whoopsie 🤷 (Sorry for the long story. This was just my take of a similar thing happening to my character for both sides)

Everyone when i was in elementary school thought i was related to Saundra Bullock just because of my last name
I remember when one person posted a journal on DA about my art, specifically my cats, in an attempt to promote me. Cool! Unfortunately their entire thing was 'look at this artist, they draw /just like finchwing/' which scared the absolute PISS out of me because this happened during that horrid time on DA where everyone was accusing people of 'style theft'. I was TERRIFIED that finch would be mad at me or her fans would attack me. I thought about changing my style that I had worked on for eight years at the time.
Trying to get ahead of the curve, I apologized to Finch for.....nothing, really, but she took me seriously and went through my gallery to see what I was talking about. She was so understanding and reassured me that I wasn't copying anything. It was okay. Even so, I couldn't bring myself to post for a while afterward on DA.
Comparisons, if done wrong -even in good nature-, can be so very detrimental.
I remember incidents like that in the Spyro community too.
People were at each other's throats for doing their own arcs of the Lengend Of stuff

Well, I do love your character and all, but it does look a little too much like- nah just kidding. I love your characters so much. They are all so beautiful. The colors correspond with each other perfectly, and your art is just stunning. Your fur suits, plushies, and everything that you make is perfect. Don't listen to the haters.
as an artist ive not had that "Yet" but im sure i will soon but its true, ive made friends just by complementing on their art, and they have made friends with me by complementing on mine, and it kinda or really does make you and them happy i know it does my like my profile, my friend made it for me and said i can use it.

What's the similarity? Yellow belly scales. Mine aren't even the same pattern!
I remember getting one of those comments on my first fursuit I ever made. "You look like Kero." ... It was a natural colored red fox with purple accents, and ears that were way too big... what???

I have a fursona that is an alien dragon species that I made myself and so many people always say "wow that looks exactly like toothless from HTTYD".... it so frustrating! sure if I squint my eyes and look the other way maybe they look similar but honestly the only thing they have in common is a similar head shape and both are mostly just one colors.

Tip for drawing : put things you love together and bam! Creature created it might be messy, But you can still love it.

Huh... I haven't watched this whole thing, (And I agree with 99% of the things you've said so far, (Me: "I mean, I'd like to be compared to Canarysong-")) and I admit I DID compare your OC, Neffertity, with my "OC"*, Sunbeam, but I thought it was really COOL. I notices how they both were dragons, had white, neon blue, and gold, but I thought it was EPIC. I guess that's just the thing. Some people compare saying that you stole, while others compare to find epic coincidences between artists! I guess it's just perspective, sometimes? Who knows! I'm super glad you make videos like these, though, where you tell people where they could be going wrong! They're actually very helpful to figure out how the rest of the community thinks!
*I based him off of one of my LEGOs I got when I was about seven- I made him a whole species and gave him a backstory and a girlfriend and all that crap, but I still say the OC(s) aren't ENTIRLY mine because I didn't make the design. I DID give their species superpowers and a bunch of cool other things, but STILL. ANYWAY-

This isn’t the exact same thing you talked about in the video but-
I was talking about a story I had made for my fursonas and characters, I had been working on it for about 3 years and when I got to the point when I was telling them about what powers my characters had my friend all she had to say was “sounds like my hero academia” I had to rewrite MOST OF THE PLOT to make it more original so I wouldn’t get “those” kinds of comments :(

This does happen though, I've made a design for an oc and people have came at me because of markings/features of characters/ocs's I've literally never heard of. I'm not saying it's always the case but trying to keep up with EVERY segment of the art community so you know whether this be copying or not is just not gonna happen lol
The marking on the eye looks like something I have seen before just a bit different btw love ur character
I had a dragon OC who was an albino electric dragon. She had these spines that went all down her back and they could push out (sorta like cat claws) and she could collect electricity with them in order to fire any electricity. (This is so she wasn't op) and she could store a bit of energy with them too.
People kept saying she looked like the Indominus Rex from Jurassic World. I'm guessing it was because of the spines and her rounded head but hers was a very short rounded head. The Indom has an elongated snout and has far less quills than my OC had. Also... she was a dragon, not a mutant dinosaur. An electric Wyvern to be specific. (Wyverns are the 2 winged dragons).
It was fine at first but then you got the people who were too rude about it. So I stopped using her.

I have a kitsune fursona who is bright green blue orange and pink. And someone compared him to Cerebrum (pastarru’s main character) simply because they both have antennae 😐
How did you come up with those markings?
Definitely been on both sides of this and I agree that in rare cases it is helpful. Sometimes it's hard to swallow when something looks like an unexpected carbon copy. Especially when you thought you made something unique. However I'm more likely to disregard these comments now a days for the reasons you listed. They are constant. You make something new and it might as well just be a copy and pasted recolor with how people react. I try not to let them get to me as alot of people seem to think it's a compliment. They see something in your character that they really like in another and want to point it out. Still ticks me off more then half the time though.
I was playing WoF Roblox, and made a Fantribe and an OC called 'ink' and WHAT DO YA KNOW. Some people in the server were Undertale AU sans roleplayers, and they found me and they said oH yEaH iTs iNk.
But they're actually cool beans. Made some friends.
But still. I made another OC and I struggled to make the different to that OC.

My mango fursona where the color are not that similar got called that one orange dragon from pokemon 😶

Ok so I love your character and the design but I think there is a little to much black near the mohawk how about add a yellow strip so there can be more then one part that is yellow.

I made a subspecies of dragon and it’s unique backstory is a primary part of that subspecies. HOWEVER I’m scared someone will tell me I can’t claim a dragon as my own species. They are correct, but you can’t take my EXACT design. I know it’s similar to other dragons and if I see one like it I won’t be surprised. But mine has a unique backstory and exact number of fins and such. No one should attack another person for having their own species that’s kind of similar to other species. It may be similar, but there’s got to be something unique about it that makes it their own.
I feel like I have heard people say that about people. They see a similar hair style and go, "OMG You look JUST like XYZ!" ( Bieber hair or whatever was a thing for a while...) and for the most part they get this inflated ego suddenly. I've seen a few "reality" shows or competitions where someone says, "Hi, I'm blah and I look just like Blahblah! Tehe!" Or "I'm told I look just like BlahBlah!" And I'm like... uuuuuh how? Where?
what's funny is that my fursona is teeeeeechnically an adoptable that has been extremely edited, but we dont talk about it
OMG my name is Tahlia pronounced the same as Talia also I love your design for her! I'm a young fur and I really want to create one of my imaginations that I've had in a dream before!
I know how this feels so much! Also people don't realize is that it's mostly a coincidence, and it happens more than people realized. Everything we make or create, someone else has the similar idea that we cannot avoid. And to be honest, nothing is 100 pure cent original, there is always someone with the same idea as you( not copying you, it just a lot of people are super creative these days), and no matter how hard you try to change it, it's gonna be the same thing issue....Cause people just love to make fights. So just a warning to everyone, don't take it to heart they are mostly are trolls they just want to get to you and see you mad. And if your happy with your character design and found out just cause of a stupid coincidence, don't change it cause of them. It won't do any good, I've change my personas over time how I feel and I still get attacked by trolls and people just jerks about it. I get those mostly, some people just want to cause trouble when it's not necessary. It's just how the internet is. So yeah, don't take it to heart and just ignore it. Like I said, nothing is 100 pure cent original, even tho we try to be original. Also this is a great video btw! ^ ^

Also one thing, if some thing reminds you of a character in a good way, you can say it in a better manner. For example, I've seen some things that remind me of IZ and WOY ( Invader Zim and Wander Over Yonder.) I see a very happy guy that reminds me of Wander, I would say. Omg your character, I love your character the hair is super nice, and the personality reminds me of my favorite character Wander just a bit some what. I think that is great that you made a character super happy. If you add more to like give the artist more depth and how you don't mean any rudeness or harm on your reminder. Than that be a better approach. Cause your going up to them and saying you love their character and all, and how it reminds you of that and explain that your just a fan of that fandom so you can't help it. As for Invader Zim, I see like the Grinch new movie from 2018, he reminds me alot of cause of Zim due to their personality some what and such, but that is just me! But you get the point. I just feel like people should be aware of what I said, and be careful when approaching an artist cause it can be really hurtful and make them just.... it's hard for them even just working on a character forever, like years and someone just ruins it all cause of that reminder. I know there is a lot here, but I just wanted to state a point and what I experience and hopefully this helps people be aware and better on themselves among the community. ^ ^

If your character is based off a fruit, animal, or existing property, you CANNOT be upset. It really be like, How dare you draw a strawberry wolf!!1!!1 the most basic of animals and fruits
If your sona is based off a trope (halloween, demon, candy, ocean, etc) I guarantee you you'll find like 50 of the same idea and colors
If your character is 3 colors or less well yeah you're gonna run into someone else who also likes black & red or blue & pink Or whatever other common/simple color pairings
If your design consists of mostly spots, stripes, stars, hearts, etc then of course you'll run into a similar character. Very common design choice and theres only so many places you can put a spot or a stripe
One of the things I've come across with people comparing my characters and species to someone else's characters and species. Ones I've basically had made up since I was a child and then someone decides to come up to me in DMs/PMs or in a public social media or on Discord only for them to be like, OH they look just like this dude over here and the species looks like his/her species... and it's like when I do actually compare the two, they look almost nothing alike except maybe the similar coloration or maybe the clothing or hey, it's the way the guy has a mohawk or his tail looks... It's just... come on people.
Then there's the other part where people are just like, you copied this character or this person's species and I'm just sitting there going, uhhh... but my species have scorpion tails that are covered in fur and have long pointy ears and small horns and are shapeshifter alien things? And the species you just compared mine too has long big canine like ears, a rat like tail with a tuft of fur on the tip of the tail that resembles the scorpion stinger, completely covered in fur and isn't a shapeshifting alien with alt forms.... And not only that, my guy has white skin, black hair, isn't completely covered in fur and has green eyes and wears blue armor while your's miiight be similar in the coloration and what's being worn n all.... But they really don't look like the same design. o-o;;;
Another thing I LOVE to point out when it comes to these things is, hey, when was yours created? OH I see the character and species you just compared is fairly brand new and was made in around 2018 while mine were existing in 2015. o-o I've had to do that to shush someone completely before cause this one guy wouldn't stop coming at me until that point. I think to an extent I may have embarrassed them when to the realization to the whole uh... when the character and species was made around 3 years apart gap just to prove a point I didn't copy nobody's thing and that they were wrong the whole time. At the same time it was both annoying and funny it had to go down like this.

Lemme just add a teeeny tiny little bit on the 'leaving a comment' bit. And my apologies, I'll most likely repeat a lot of stuff because.... I like to write xD Aaaand I try to like, not miss anything (but I inevitably will~~)
As much as we might occasionally want to give advice and our own two cents on things, sometimes that is the bit that angers others. Of course, everyone is different, they take things differently - but But, what I'm getting at here, is 'Unrequested Critique'. I know we'd all want to go and say stuff occasionally, like. There's this Wonderful art piece we just saw, it looks Super Great, but there's a big jarring anatomy mistake in it, and it's not even an artist liberty or stylistic kinda thing, like it's a clear honest beginners mistake in a way. And you reeeeally wanna go and say 'hey this looks great but next time you should XYZ instead'. This, while well intentioned, can make the artist irritated because you gave critique without them asking for any. Instead I'd advice on going 'This looks great! I love X thing about this picture. However there's 1 teeny tiny bit about it that makes me think a little. Do you mind if I give a little critique/feedback on that part? If not then that's fine too! Have a nice day!'
Sometimes artists need to be the ones to take the first step, like 'Ok, I want to hear this' or 'Ah, so there really was something off but I just couldn't tell what' They need to be willing to improve. Yes we want all the best to others, we want to see them grow and improve, but occasionally that first step has to be made by the artist. If they say no, then, welp, they're not ready yet, or are happy where they are - as much as we would absolutely love to tell them that no, cats don't have wolf muzzles, no dog legs don't bend like that, oh my god the bone structure. It'll get to the artists eventually if they want to improve. They'll ask for help, and That is the best time to give some :2
In short: "Hey, can I give you some feedback?" is a super good thing to remember when you want to toss out a word!
As an example, my friend is the reason why I was able to work on the ears of my characters. Sure the whole "What's up?" "The ears look like pieces of paper glued to the back of their heads." was a bit of a ">:O" moment, it did get me to look at the structure more and try to figure out why this was a thing, then I figured out ways on how to fix it, showed another picture to my friend and Boom, improvement! All done willingly :2 Of course, with friends it's easier, we kinda look for comments and opinions from our friends, where as hearing something from a stranger can easily make people defensive and to lock up
But Ye! Just a thing that popped in my mind xD
doesn't bother me as much as everyone has always been like "omg it looks like flame" because it has red, yellow, and orange, along with other colors like tan and black too lol. Or it is like "omg he is spyro" lol even though he is red and not purple.
please dont judge me about this. im 11. BUT i regretted it and ripped it up the day after i did it but i traced someones fursona and changed the colours for my own character but i did get rid of it :(

I don't mind it too much when people say stuff like that. People have compared my current fursona (you can see her as my profile picture) to Klonoa and digimon, and I'm fine with that! I honestly find it to be a bit of a compliment- but not for the reason you might think.
While I've heard of digimon and Klonoa before, I've never actually was a fan of either of those, neither were a large part of my childhood and I've never really looked into either of them, I think it's cool because it's very unlikely I took any inspiration from these things so it's interesting to me that my character has reminded some people of these franchises that I'm very unfamiliar with! They might not be the biggest franchises but they are both pretty cool from what I've seen so it's really neat that I've unknowingly made something reminiscent of those.
