    One time, I ended up venting to an artist I was commissioning just because my mental health is shitty in general, and he tried to offer me a mental health discount, but I declined it. Additionally, I couldn't give him an upfront payment due to PayPal being a nuisance, but he gave me the drawing anyways, and 3 months later, I gave him 1500% of what he had originally charged. (He was severely undercharging; $10 for 2 full-body drawings fully-colored and shaded; so I asked him how long they took and paid him $10/hour instead.)
    It's been about a year since I gave him the payment and he's one of my best friends now as well as my mentor. I've also given him advice on pricing and he now charges $50/drawing with a 50% increase per additional character, which is much more reasonable. Using this pricing system, I paid him $75 for another commission of about the same quality. Additionally, I recently found out that his family is poor and the money from the commissions went towards the family savings. Anyways, watching this video made me realize how easy it was for him to be taken advantage of at the time, so maybe the fact that I paid him fairly despite that factored into us becoming close friends.

    • @foxicorncomix
      @foxicorncomix Год назад +5

      @@desertbloomke I don't really understand how it could be strictly for digital artists? The only thing that would change is how you get the commission to the client right? And there's all kinds of ways that you could specify that in your commission information, so I don't understand how a platform could limit you to only digital art. But I'm oblivious sometimes so clearfication would be appreciated.☺

    i've had problems with pricing my art for a long time (well.. i've only been taking commissions for three or so years, but i've thought about it for a long time!) and one main thing that always tripped me up was the "time" aspect of pricing it. Everyone always says "Price your work based on how long it takes!" or "The longer your work takes, the more you should charge!" but... I can get a colored + cel shaded fullbody done in less than two hours! Maybe one if I don't get distracted (ADHD is a bitch, lmao). It doesn't even take much effort for me either- just turn on some music, turn off my brain, and get to work.
    For anyone struggling with this too, i'd say look at it a different way: Because you draw so fast, price MORE. if your art is good and it gets done quickly, that's a very good thing for most people, so they'd be willing to pay extra!
    this video was very good and helped me with a lot of things i thought about commissions etc. :'-0

    • @TheGreyscaleRainbow
      @TheGreyscaleRainbow 2 года назад +28

      Absolutely! You shouldn't have to settle for less just because you're experienced and efficient! You put a lot of work into getting to that skill level, so you should price it based on what you feel comfortable earning for the kind of work you're doing. The hourly wage is a good starting point for beginners, but it can be adjusted over time as the artist gets more comfortable in deciding what their work is worth. As demand goes up and skill level increases, prices can be raised!

      THIS. I can take weeks to finish a drawing, then do the same thing in a few hours depending on my mood (and ADHD symptoms XD) at the time. The "make an estimate" part in the hourly payment method of the video was really helpful tbh. Considering this as well!

    • @tovermoran4360

    As the client I love when the artist gives frequent updates. A lot of artists make to much progress in one jump and it makes it difficult to ask them to undo their hard work just because they didn’t check if something was right earlier.

It really isn't as obvious as one would think (sadly).

    2) this is SO COOL. I immediately started poking around the site and setting up my account. I am so glad they reached out to you for this!
    I was wondering, do you have any advice on the slump between commissions, especially when they last a long time? I got so ashamed of my lack of commissions that I unpinned all of my commissions posts, which in hindsight is very dumb lol, but it's super embarrassing to have gotten lots of commissions at very poor rates in high school, but now that I'm nearly graduating uni with a degree in illustration, to not get any commissions at all 😭is it just better marketing? most likely lol but if you had any advice, especially with the mental side of things, I'd super appreciate it!

      Ok finished the video, and all I can say is that this Artistree sounds good, looks good, is good. And all I can hope is that it stays that way.
      That being said, my only problem in my commission journey is goddamn payment method- (paypal good = problem freaking verification, how tf do i do that)

    I rather just keep using paypal tbh and just tell the client there's a 5% paypal fee tax(even tho is higher for me).
    Few thingies from my experience: try to go for 90% quality, the last 10% takes the most, but in the eyes of most it will be the same;
    If you're running behind schedule, keep the client up to date not in the dark, in the long run even if you fk up you will see keep some of your clients;
    ALWAYS, use invoices to get paid;
    Always be upfront with your clients and ask the same in return. You cannot read their mind, their can they.
    GL !

    Thank you for this! Trying it out now. It should help with the multisite commission requests I get and not having to go back to each site for commission info. My only concern is the fee that's put on clients. 6.5% + $2.60 BEFORE taxes? People may get upset by thinking the total they pay will be the price you say but instead more is added. I sure hope that Artistree says what each fee is for. I may also need to give clients a heads up about fees being charged.

    Gorgeous video in general!
    But guys remember:
    From a business perspective It's Horrible to do commission sheets, please just discuss details with clients, because YOU choose the client, and YOU as the Artist are the comodity
    NEVER Undersell yourself, Never MCdonaldify yourself, please guys, like she says ALWAYS ALWAYS start from at least minimum wage per hour (Or more, usually Independant Artists are taxed more, so go more than Minimum wage to cover that)
    PS: Never wait for clients to come to you, take a day or two to actively SEEK clients on forums and websites, and TALK to them

    • @AnubisMaster

      @@Nadiaxel One extra thing form experience, a big following doesn't equal big potential clients (You CAN get clients with barely any followers or fame);
      I practically saw that clients come from actively seeking them (For example responding on posts where people seek artists or by offering the services to people directly)
      A following is good for brand recognition and credibility but for Trustworthy and Loyal Clients... an active direct communication seems the best option
      You can even make strong friendships with them hehe!

    • @Nadiaxel
      @Nadiaxel  2 года назад +5

      @@AnubisMaster Yes, absolutely! I also think that ties well with the fact that a lot of AMAZING artists don't have a big following - but that doesn't mean they aren't making a living from being an artist. Sometimes very successful artists are "too busy" being successful and having work to do, to also have time to nurture social media accounts C:

    Btw I still need to get better a some kind of drawings and get more followers, what kind of strategy to get followers did you use?

    • @Nadiaxel
      @Nadiaxel  2 года назад +1

      Honestly just keep posting my own content, engage with my lovely followers and also like and comment on posts submitted by those I follow myself ^^ when you get a decent following (perhaps around 500-1000 people) doing DTIYS challenges will also help c:

    So with Artistree not being a searchable marketplace, is there any difference between using that service from your own self-run website? (registered domain, hosting, payment processing)
    Also I see Artistree is based on sending digital files for clients to print themselves, which I recall is how you handle your commission work. I'm a digital only artist myself so I can see the logic of that. But sending full resolution files, that's basically the source file without the layers... do you ever worry about people mass printing and selling their own copies? Aside from that the other reason I'd prefer to print and ship is I can SIGN the artwork, which is usually a big appeal for art collectors, both in commissions and premade prints.

    Tusind tak! Det her var en super god hjælp! 😄 Jeg havde lige besluttet mig for at ændre mine commission-priser og setup, og Artistree lyder som den helt rigtige platform. Dine priseksempler var også rigtig gode. Jeg har en rimelig god idé om hvad jeg bør tage for mit arbejde, men jeg kan godt huske dengang man var ny og ikke havde nogen form for selvtillid omkring hvad ens tid skulle koste. Jeg er sikker på det hjælper en masse folk med at komme igang ♥️
