As an owner of a resin head with resin eyes I agree with most of what is said. The head does heat up a fair bit and I tend to open the mouth to get some airflow when I can. The advantage of the resin base means that vision isn't that bad with the resin eyes however, because the tear ducts are very close to my eyes so I actually have some of the best vision I've seen with fursuit heads. No issue with a large muzzle blocking half my sight either.
That said, this style works really well for realistic suits more then other designs.

as a previous resin base suiter i will never go back to resin unless it display i couldnt see anything i did the fursuit parade almost blind and that was bad cause i ended upwolking almost into the rail cause i didnt have a handler but my advice is if you wanna resin base PLEASE GET A HANDLER IF NEW TO IT dont do what i did

Gaming Furry perhaps more an issue with the maker? I mean that varies a lot I guess. My head is done by voodoo delicious. They're great at realistic heads but not skilled at the body parts.

I actually would love a kemono suit since it looks perfect for my fursona. Though they would cost alot of money, barely little ventilation, fogging of the eyes and maybe hard to walk in since some have thick legs but it would be worth it to have

Leo Kitsune some kemono makers like kemono-cube have made anti-fogging eyes. Plus more kemono makers are making moving jaws on foam bases so ventilation is better.

Another con for expanding foam heads is it's really hard to get glue to stay. I'm working on a suit right now with a DVC headbase, and I found that the surface is really smooth, which makes dry hot glue slide off. You have to really scuff up the surface to get anything to stick.

    • @katta91rey
      @katta91rey 6 лет назад +4

AdrexuJellybean I've never made a fursuit head before, but I've done some other handywork, and to get glue or paint to stay on a smooth surface you'll probably have to go over it with sandpaper first

I'm really happy that you mentioned the 3D printing method! Sadly, I don't have the setup yet to use it, but once I can, I'd really love to try it! And, seeing from one teacher of mine that has a 3D printer, I personally think that, as long as you're not dropping it from another story and you have your settings figured out, it can be much stronger than resin. Especially seeing as you'll go less for quality control and more for strength and amount of triangles. At least that's what I've gotten from what I've heard... But either way, I've actually done a head (though, of course, in foam because it's a good starter) and a few other parts, and I was wondering if anyone wanted to see!

I'm actually a young fur, claustrophobic, and overheat easily, so if you're like me and have a depressing fear of fursuit heads, read on!
I love the furry fandom and want to cosplay, but due to my weird body, I can't have a head. So I came up with a new idea! A new head! Just use makeup, a wig, and ears! First, paint your face and neck the colors and pattern of your character. Then, buy or make their ears, and buy a wig and a hairnet for the back of your head. Glue the ears to the wig, (or sew) and then put the hairnet on, THEN the wig! Lastly, either paint your neck or get soneyhing to hide it. I'm gonna use a bandana!
Sorry for the random DIY comment :3

I am an owner of a few suits, one is a resin skull base. His name is shark, and he’s a skull which means he’s not even protected by even a little bit of fur. Shark also inspires little ones to also get a skull, and since they don’t know how to deal with resin I see a lot of pictures of them breaking the teeth of their suit. Which upsets me a little bit.
Next is my lavafox, spider. She’s way easier to see out of. (Since sharks eyes are completely black and hard to see out of) anyway, spider is a lot more loved by the normies, since she isn’t as scary as a skeleton.
And that’s my two suits, I have one more but they are in the mail right now so I don’t know anything about them.
This is a bit random but I feel like I need to say something.

i use canvas mesh, but i also got glue foam to it. instead of hot gluing the mesh together i use yarn and overlap it, i basically sew them together. my very first head i made is about 2-3 years old and its been through a lot >> and its still keeping together. i put some foam padding to prevent the canvas from touching. I thought i would clarify that hot gluing the canvas isn't stable and can cause injury but sewing it together makes it stronger. there are also different strengths of mesh. as a maker i thought i should inform you. I make kemono style fursuits
    i love your videos XD

Just be warned with closed vs open cell foam: closed firmer and open is squishier. However, open cell is excelent for ventilation as air permiates easily but closed cell is literaly the stuff home insulation is made from as it traps gasses in the cells, preventing the primary method of heat transfer through gasses (convection).
Note that expanding foam is closed cell.
Edit: with 3D printing you can have issues with delamination due to small repetitive impacts or thermal cycling ( cold closet -> hot head -> cold closet -> hot head...).
An interesting developement is Ninjaflex filiment (basicly 3D printable rubber); it is very good at absorbing impacts and is very hard to delaminate. The downside is that it is VERY flexible, like colapses under it's own weight flexible; this would make it extremly hard to design a practical head with a purly Ninjaflex base.
A multi-nozzle printer or a 'cut and connect' feeder could combine the benifits of ridgid filliments and Ninjaflex but it would still be a pain to design a practical hybrid base.

you forgot neck vision! often used for quad suits they're also common in toony or realistic suits which are tall species such as alpacas or giraffes. A mesh that is similar colour to the fur is used, but Beastcub uses collars to disguise the mesh and it looks awesome

Another technique is to model the head in 3d software then "unwrap" the polygonal mesh to a flat surface that can be cut out of foam. The edges are then glued back together to re-create the 3D form. The result is really light weight (so great for oversized heads) and not nearly as stuffy as a carved foam head while being able to take on any style you can imagine. It's also soft, and not prone to being brittle like resin and 3d printed materials.
Resin heads can be patched if needed when there's a crack: drill out the ends of the crack to relieve stress, roughen the surface, bring the edges together (more holes and carpet thread seems to work) and cover with epoxy resin.
I'd suggest two other categories: Rarr suits (designed to be, in part at least, to be horrifying) and mask-style heads which are much less built up than regular fursuit heads and tend to be of the use-your-own-eyes style. My Caitian partial uses this technique and is basically a stretchy antron/muppet fleece balaclava with prosthetic style forms for the nose and mouth and latex treated cardboard ears:

Something I always mention when 3D printing is brought up: in the USA, if you are in a relatively urban/populated area, your local library headquarters may well have a 3D printer that you will be able to use by just paying for the filament used! My sister works at the headquarters library for a relatively small rural city and they have a 3D printer so it's more common than you might think, and most librarians are massive nerds who won't mind if you bring in some furry-related model to print out.
Their technology-focused librarian on staff should be able to help you when it comes to figuring out how to work 3d printers or help you find resources to learn about the modeling for it as well! A lot of people don't realize, but to be a full librarian you need a master's degree, which involves mostly learning how to look up and find information efficiently, so if you ever need some help at the start of learning something and don't know where to turn, your local librarian is very qualified and eager to help you!

As a Kemono suit owner I can vouch for what pocari is saying :3 there are ways to help prevent fogging and makers are trying to make them more breathable by adding spots that are Directly open to fur rather than be solid foam Like mine. My wife Kitti has two heads from the same maker, ones of the newer style and one is the old one like mine :3 My head does however, have Big holes in the ears for ventilation as well as the small mouth. I do fog up within about 5 minutes at con. Going to have fans installed in my ear holes at AC and will update with more info after trying it out! I was hoping you would get to the style of heads that use the wearer's eyes when you got to the realistic category, like MagpieBone's heads. I'd still like to know what you think about that style of head.

    Thanks for making this, Pocari!
I've got a cosplay head with a working jaw that I made myself - he's my first - but I quickly learnt the ventilation sucks. When it comes time to build my fursona's head, this will be a big help.
Thanks so much, and have fun at Midwest for us who can't afford to go. If you see Zombunny over there, give her a hug and let her know it's from me!

There is a new eye type: digital. You can thank Adafruit for making it easier, but in a nutshell, the eyes are projected on a screen powered by either a micro controller or a micro processor (like a Raspberry Pi). The pro is the eye can be digitally refined to look anyway you want and if done right can be given massive level customization (emotions, blinking, color change, effects, etc). The obvious con is that vision is just as bad as kimono eyes, the eyes only work as long as you have some kind of power source (which if you use the same battery as your fan, means you have less time for that), and the fact they're very complicated if you do not have technical know how. While Adafruit's tutorial DOES help explain things, for a normal fursuit maker, it will be full of head scratching moments.

I have a 3D printer, and while I do agree that there's a steep learning curve, it could still be worth the price if you use it for other things. I got mine for $150 US, and with an 8x8 inch build plate, I could print out a base in less than 6 pieces, then glue them together. You can also help guard against smash related injuries with a layer of regular towel fabric, or some other breathable fabric with reasonable padding. And with it being so cheap to make, you can just print out a new one if you ever need to.
Also if you print out the pieces and just make them interlocking instead of glued, not only would it make the chances of it surviving a punch to the face much greater, but you could easily salvage the head by printing the 1 or 2 panels that broke.

I'm hoping to have my fursuit finished before MFF. 80 hour workweek sucks. I'd love to hug you and get your thoughts on my first fursuit attempt :D
(doing a muscle wolf character. Not my fursona. Blue minky plush fur for the experimentation. Figured it'd help with heating issues and my budget! Since ya know... I got like 10 yards of it for $30... )
Right now the only thing I need to finish are the hands, feet and tail. The upper body took forever to do. fabric fusion> sewed foam onto a compression shirt/pants and then used elastic thread to attach the fur :3

This really eases my anxiety about making suits for others. I feel like all I ever hear from others is "this is how a suits supposed to be and if it's not exactly like this your a scammer" and it terrifies me. I never know how creative I'm allowed to get. The fact that u say "hey this kinda suit typicallu has this issue and some people still like it anyway and it's kinda expected" makes the world feel so much closer. Thanks

Me and my friend (she’s really short) we are only in elementary school and we’re furrys and my class found out because I told one of my other friend that me and my short friend are furry and my friend started cringing soooooo hard! I was sad because she was judging me about being a furry but me and my short friend are getting paws and tails and ears for Hallowen and wearing it to school so don’t cringe about your friends that are furrys they will get revenge on Hallowen by hanging out with you with their fursuit on!

oddly enough, i was still deciding what animal i wanted my fursona (because the one i originally had didnt seem to fit) so when my Gma called me for dinner i left this tab open, and asked her what animal she saw when she looked at me. she said: Kangaroo and Rat".
my first fursona was a kangaroo named Nine
my second fursona was a Rat named Ratta-Tat-Tat (RTT or RT)
she has no idea im a furry, and im happy she said kangaroo and rat, because when she said that i decided to kept them around for awhile. i found out that the personality i gave RT was actually my own by mistake, and nine's was my best friends personality. i gave her nine's ref and now we fursuit together.

I've been making my fursuit heads out of darice plastic canvas sheets. once I cut into strips I use small wire ties to keep it in place, then I use white duck tape along with some plastic glue to hold it in place. then the rest is all foam and fur work. I'm also glade that I'm not the only one to use kickboxing helmets😋.

that's the one thing that really should be experimented more is ventilation in a fursuit cause you're a walking sauna practically, vision is also a big deal, but learning these different styles and such, I think I have an idea of how I will make mine when the time comes, love how informative your show is, also your fursuit is adorable OwO, keep being awesome

Good info in this one! One type of head I don't see much about is neck vision heads. I know Beastcub does really good ones, but I can't think of any other makers off the top of my head. They're really good for creatures like horses or gazelles that have long necks to really sell the illusion, and I feel like they would have pretty good vision and ventilation!

  • @VestedUTuber

One bit of advice for 3D printed fursuit heads, coming from someone with general practical 3D printing experience: print it in a nylon/carbon fiber composite material like Onyx or NylonX. It's a bit more expensive, takes some dialing in and you need a printer that can print both high-temp materials and abrasive filaments (all metal hot-end and either a hardened steel or ruby nozzle), but the result is almost foam levels of lightweight and it's indestructible in everyday use. Unlike regular nylon 3D prints it's quite rigid, and unlike other rigid materials it won't just shatter if bent too much.
