    Oh also remember that black fur can be REALLY HOT!

    • @maxaroni7279
      @maxaroni7279 7 лет назад +75

      That just depends on the type of fur, I don't believe the color itself is what generates the heat. Plus fursuits are already heAted AF!
      edit: i used to be stupid lol

    I've seen people wear bandannas on tails that drag on the ground, so the dirt gathers on the bandanna and not the tail, and to wash, they just take off the bandanna and put it in the washing machine

    And also for fursuit commissioning tips: DON'T BE A JERK TO YOUR MAKER! They have spent SO much time getting to the point where they are now! In my past year of being in my fursuit makers chat there were two people who were just complete jerks to them when talking to them about fursuit stuff.
    Fursuit makers are people too! They aren't just robots that are there to churn out suits like no tomorrow.

    Another bad thing about black suits is that black absorbs all light waves, which means it also absorbs all the heat from the light waves of the sun, so it'll be easier to overheat.

    I've made a few suits. And so far the hardest thing to do is lots of spots or stripes. Exaple: big cats, leopards, jaguars and or cheetahs (and so on).It takes a long time to make those markings. Especially when the spots are on the feet, hands or tail. That makes for a lot of weak points.

    • @rubyfox8971
      @rubyfox8971 7 лет назад +16

      And also for the construction of the head, if you are going for toony don't make the foam base too big. I know big heads can look really cute but it WILL get heavy. I've had this happen and it is not fun, it gets very tiering. Keep in mind when furring the base it adds another extra inch or so of thickness. So the head will come out bigger no matter what.

      the way I'm building mine the lights are only in the head and tail, and thanks to the magic of Arduino are easily removable if anything happens. (batteries are also quite heavy)

    • @TardMan
      @TardMan 5 лет назад

      Every time I see comments like these, I cringe at how hard my suit will be to clean. I'm currently building a fabrication shop and I have some really ambitious plans to implement a running mini bike engine onto the back of my suit. I planned on using a foam chest to hide the batteries for the starter and running the cable controls up my arm. Cleaning it is going to put me through hell and back.

    I know there are a lot of characters with hair styles and stuff, the most common ones being the sort of hair over eye/emo-ish look, long flowy anime hair or spiky anime hair, and while it can be done it's really hard to pull off well without it just looking like weird fur clumps or a fur or a wig. Let alone vision, if you have hair covering your character's face then it'll limit your vision a lot more. Most of the time you'd have to change the hair to be a little tuft or something like on your Pocari suit so it doesn't get in the way

    • @deiwildcat1884
      @deiwildcat1884 7 лет назад +3

      I was looking for a comment like this. One of the characters I have that I want to get a suit of eventually has a mane except it flows up instead of down (drawing of him here www.furaffinity.net/view/23288097/ ). Like you said have to try and shape it that way would be rather difficult to make it look right. Not sure how I should change that when ever the time comes and get a suit of him. He also has big monster claws, so that will make things a bit difficult too lol

    • @edmaiunbound4135
      @edmaiunbound4135 7 лет назад +2

      DeiWildcat I do know giant monster claws can work really well on suits, especially with big puffy paws. I remember seeing a couple at a fur con I went to last year, they're really cool

    • @deiwildcat1884
      @deiwildcat1884 7 лет назад +2

      Edmai Unbound Yeah I've seen them work well on suits too. I'm just sure that big padded paws and huge claws, plus a a long mane of fur will cost a pretty penny.

      As for using wigs on fursuits, I personally think they can look nice if done well? Often they're too thin though, so you'd probably have to find a way to bulk it up.
      It'd also up the maintenance if you used wig hair, since you'd have to take into account how the wig itself needs looking after. It's personal preference I guess!
      (its also the reason my fursona won't be a suit anytime soon, as I gave her hair before i considered fursuiting, and I'm not sure if I'd be happy removing the hair entirely)

    Be careful with the tails, especially if they’re really long
    Like, I have two tail designs for my fursona. One that’s really long and fluffy, and one that’s about average
    So when I (potentially) commission my partial, I’ll go for the average tail. ‘Cause
    1. Bigger, fluffy tails = more fur being used. Which (possibly) means the price will go up
    2. The bigger tail, can make it harder to navigate
    3. Cleaning would be a pain with the big tail
    Some other tips
    1. Try to make sure the character has moveable arms and hands. Might not be a big problem with partials, but could be with fullsuits. This is for a few reasons
    - While having “wing arms” can be cool, you’ll most likely be t-posing the entire time you’re wearing it. Which means your arms will end up being pretty sore
    - Unless you have a handler, or someone else to help you, basic things will be harder (putting the suit on/off, removing the head, eating/drinking, etc.)
    2. Try to design a character with big eyes. I know having like, a realistic wolf, can be interesting. But! You’ll be sacrificing a lot of visibility, if you go for small/realistic eyes
    3. Know how much heat you can handle, and try not to design a character, that’ll make you suit a sauna
    - Like, I had the bright idea of making my fursona a kemono. I can’t handle high temperatures. So, if I want to keep the kemono design, I’ll most likely have to go for a partial
    - Plushie suits look adorable, but they can be extremely hot
    4. Try to make sure your character matches your height, body type, etc.
    - Don’t make it really tall if you’re short, etc.
    5. If you’re fursona’s feral, make an anthro design
    - Ferals are typically on all fours. The only suits like this, are quad suits

    • @yourhope5410
      @yourhope5410 3 года назад +2

      If you want kemono, but are worried about heat, ask for hidden holes at the base of the ears and don’t use the plastic eye covers. Yes, they look cool, but giant kemono eyes are the best place to regulate heat, so keep them uncovered! Also plenty of great kemono suits don’t have eye covers, even some very popular kemono makers like LikeAPalette don’t use eye covers.

    I feel like you should've mentioned LEDs
    those could be a *real* pain when washing and repairing/replacing.
    when washing you gotta make sure all the electrical parts are covered up and work *extremely* carefully around if washing a head.
    when suiting you gotta make sure you have enough battery Power and have extra batteries with you.
    good stuff my roo, keep it up !!

    Do not have too many colours, especially bright ones that don't mix. If you try to commission someone and you character has 40 colours it's going to cost a lot more than the one with on 4 colours.

      Yeah, Currently my fursona has 3 colors with a color for a tie (and if she wants to wear it's hoodie) so four. I made a simple fursona because I animate. If I ever do order or try to make a suit it will be easier, also. So yay I didn't even think about that when I made her. xD

    This actually reminded me of Tenille Flowers video on making character designs animation friendly, since so many details or having markings in odd, detached places can be really tedious to draw repetitively. Simplifying the design for that basically works the same way, and how you don't want to blind people who watch with too bright a white if your background isn't bright and you can't go full black because you can't see the line art, it all overlaps a lot.

  • @FreakMyLife6
    @FreakMyLife6 7 лет назад +50

    As a fursuit maker I wont accept any quotes where the characters have long hair. Mohawks, hair tufts, and more pixie like styles are fine but anything else is near impossible to achieve with normal fur and I personally think wigs on fursuits look...... well terrible (especially with cheaper wigs). Ill only accept that character if the person is ok with the suit having one of the hair styles listed above that is more do-able when making suits. NFT fur works great for hair but a lot of toony makers like myself dont like to use it and it bumps up the commission price a whole lot as well :

    One thing I would recommend is make sure that you're familiar with all the color choices on fabric, especially if you're trying to commission a fursuit from a fursuit maker. You won't find every hue and shade being sold as fabric, and less so with fursuit makers that like to supply on the bare minimum / most popular fabric colors to not waste money. In my case I was trying to make a dark grey fursuit, but the store only had grey and black fur.

    What about horns? I'd love to get a fursuit for my fursona, but I'm a little worried about the horns. They're slightly more curvered than standard horns and I'm not to sure if a maker would be able or willing to make them, same goes for his saber teeth

    • @TheTarney
      @TheTarney 7 лет назад +7

      Resin cast horns are great for realistic suits made with a resin base, but can quickly become heavy with size. And also not great if you like fursuit games or running around play (the whole poking people and things). And oh boy, resin casts are expensive to make, again depending on size. That said a good few makers will do resin horns commissions.
      Toony horns are a bit harder to make and require quite a bit of skill to make look normal (my experience anyway). But are somewhat cheaper and don't strain your neck after wear.
      Saber teeth are pretty easy to find a maker in both realistic and toony style with both having nice looking results.
      Hope this helps :)

      I think some people have their fursuit’s horns just made of foam covered with fur, but it really depends on the design. I don’t know much, this is just my grain of sand

    • @RenEatsHands
      @RenEatsHands 6 лет назад +7

      on the side of toony makers, some will sew the shape and stuff the horn, then glue and secure it with sewing. horns that are upright most commonly have foam. Ill be making a fursuit in which will have four horns (two sets), as i want them to be hard and sit in place i will be using some hard foam (dont ask me where i got it i dont even know what it's called)

    I'd recommend using a limited color palette, (around 5-8 colors, 9 at the most) because, lets just say, you had a character with 15 different colors, then it'd be wayyy more expensive, plus it will take a long time for the fursuit maker to make it, and it makes the character's patterns overwhelming. Also, try not to overlap intricate patterns.

  • @inuyasha1086
    @inuyasha1086 6 лет назад +3

    The more colors you have, the higher the price usually because that’s more fur the artist has to order. Also, it’s a good idea to see which colors of fur are readily available and limit yourself to those colors otherwise the artist won’t be able to perfectly match your color. If you insist on an unusual color, be prepared to wait an extra year or two for the custom color run. Custom fur colors take FOREVER to get.

    #QnA Hey Pocari! I am thinking about fursuiting on Halloween this year! And I've never public suited before. And I will me with my friends ( non furs ) but they probably wont care. But will be wearing a partial. Like should I give Hi-fives or hugs to kids ( if they come up to me ) My handler will be my dad.....ouch. Do you think its a good idea? I am nervous about suiting in public and i dont know why! I think I am afraid the suit does't look to appealing to kids. So IDK also keep in mind I am 12 yeahhhh......

    Gotta remind people that want to get a full or mostly black suit, that the suit might be a little warmer than light colored suits. Especially if they go outside with it on, the black fur will just soak up all that sunlight and make you a lot hotter in the suit.

  • @nightdragonzero
    @nightdragonzero 7 лет назад +16

    As someone who has 3 suits with black as their primary color, all my photographer friends swear at me over how much they have to color compensate if I'm in a photo with another fursuiter. I've probably made them swear more since I got my Morefurless suit, which has a black body & white ears =P
    And as a photographer myself, yeah it is a pain to have to color compensate for a really dark black fursuit. Definitely not something I learned overnight.
    Interestingly, I was given advice in a fursuit dance comp (ruclips.net/video/fhXZHSU5S_Q/видео.html if you're interested) to slow down my tutting & make more concise movements, rather than fast ones, for the same reason you mentioned. (The arms being completely black)
    Also as someone with a dragon suit with large wings, what I find the stress is on tends to be your shoulders, rather than your back. It's likely due to the way my wing harness is built (it's like a backpack). It's a good shoulder workout though! ;)
    Also, you could try making a tail cover of sorts. I use ones for my dragon & sergal tails, esp if I walk outdoors.

    I agree with you so much on the white for your suit points! And would like to add that with pure white over time high sweat areas will stain yellow and be so hard to clean out. As an owner of an older fursuit of a white calico cat; Under the arms, crouch and tight fit neck discolor and are starting to wear out (from sweat and cleaning). It adds so much maintenance!
    I actually know a few other makers who advice against this and know of one who doesn't take white underarm/crouch commissions anymore.

    Not a lot of fursuit makers do long hair on fursuit heads because they prefer not too I suppose? and they rather do tufts on the head. I've been trying to find makers who are able to do this for my fursona so I can commission them later in the future if you have a fursona who has really long hair like mine these are the makers I have found so far FurBakery(I'm pretty sure she does long hair but I could be wrong idk), Suit-A-Dile, and Lemonbrat.

    • @sleepyhead-louie

      My fursona has long-ish hair as well (large swoosh/curl/wave out in the front, nearly shoulder-length at the sides and back, bangs that partially cover the eyes, and a small ponytail in the back), and I'd really like to get a suit of him made. It's a real shame not many makers take up the opportunity to do hair longer than just the standard tuft-- my sona's not really complete without his hair-- however I'll definitely look into the makers you mentioned. Prior to seeing this comment, my top choice for his head was DexterousZombie (I really like the way they pulled off Adezu's hair), but it's nice to get a few alternatives. (:

      Yes, that is a good tip. I was planning on doing that with my main fursona, as I love her complex design with lots of spots and it makes me happy, but it’s probably very hard to translate into a fursuit. I plan on making a separate design with larger spots, though they are fewer.

    Hi Pocari! I just wanted to ask a quick question if you don't mind- I am a VERY young fur and still trying to design my fursona, but I am positive I want her to have arm wings, will this affect the fursuit care in any way?

    • @ElasiaAvi
      @ElasiaAvi 5 лет назад +2

      Hey not pocari but I'm working on an arm wing suit myself. Just sew a feather pattern out of fleece, it gives the same soft fluff as fur without having to shave to get a sleek feather look. You can make a fur cover for the arm as the fluffier covet feathers and both are washed gently by hand and dried without heat for optimal care. Plus fleece comes in lots of cool colors.

    When commissioning a fursuit, DO NOT COMPARE MAKERS. Not all makers airbrush, do zipper paws, do indoor feet/ sock paws, etc etc etc! Some of us cannot work with airbrushing or resin because of chemical exposure and health problems. Some people can't make digigrade. Please keep this in mind! Also keep in mind that hair that is long and flowy is NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DO unless you know how to weft wig wefts into a fursuit!

Please do your fur shopping before hand or asking your making where they got the fur. I had a customer who had commissioned someone else to do their tail. They were pressured into a color that didn't match their suit because they were told that the color they wanted didn't exist. I had the color she wanted but I had to use the color the other maker used. And it took forever to find the fur the other maker used. So if you're using more than one maker ask about fur

    A good thing when making a suit is fur types. Almost my entire suit is made of luxury shag, but twit me used a dodgy white artic fox type fur (faux fur, real fur is the pits for many reasons) and when I shaved it these odd fibres started showing through. Long I had to spend ages cutting off this fur (which was glued on) to replace it. But I still used it for my tiny white chest tuft.

    One thing that I personally will have to budget for if I get the suit I plan to is items. If you're like me and have an obsession with goggles, or scarves, or hats, or if your suit has some kind of key item, the human-sized ones are generally not going to fit or will look weird. To use an example, tiny, generic steampunk goggles are usually barely wider than the bridge of a suit's nose, and will not have enough elastic to fit around the head. The shape of the lenses can also create complications, as they may end up digging into a suit's head and causing damage. Generally, this is the case with a lot of things: you'll either need to upscale if possible or have items tailor-made for suits. Thankfully, there are people who run services for this, and the prices are mostly reasonable. Suit-specific clothing is the same idea; buy at maybe one or two sizes bigger than normal.

I'm not backing down from my character now though, But I can't believe how many people gotta tug the tail or tug on a wing to see it open. And being a bit taller the horns do come above most people in a crowd. But they bump half of everything. XP

    Definitely wished I had known about fur colours and patterning. While making my first fursuit, I have the worst trouble known trying to find the lovely shade of green on my fursona, Meka. Although, after a short search, I found a fur-friendly dye and worked with that (although it turned out turquoise, which was quite the disappointment). Always try to check out different fur websites, try to find a fur colour that will be easy for you or your maker to find. Browns, Shades of Grey, White, Black, Blue, and even Pink seem to be more of the common colours.
    Another problem, was as stated above patterning. She doesn't have the intricate and details patterns now, but before she used to have small green paint-like splotches all around her face, paws, tail, and even body. It was so difficult to get those patterns into my first suit, and even more so since it was my first suit.

    "Do you have something you wished you knew before commissioning a fursuit?" Yes! Fur colors! Some specific colors used in character designs cannot be found or are very rare colors in faux fur fabric. A maker would either have to find this rare fur color, take a different shade or get it custom made. And i'm not talking about different shades of blue and red. I'm talking about that weird looking color that you're not sure of if it's either green or grey and do not know the name of.

    Heck when I was designing my fursona Moosh, I was gonna make her feet, paws and tail tip a pale colour/pure white but then i remembered i was eventually going to get a suit made of her [Which is in the works rn] so I decided to make the feet tips a darker colour than the light blue that makes up most of the paws.

    Hearing you talk about the placement of white fur made me think:
    “Good thing my fursonas a fox, every spot they said not to make white is gonna be black-“
    And I plan to add angel wings, but make them really cartoony, so basically a white felt heart that will have a small clip ;-;

    REMEBER TO CONCIDER EYE COLOR! There are so many things to consider with eye color!
    1. Darker colors are easier to see through, so if you have dark brown eyes, it'll be easier to see your real eyes.
    2. Lighter colors are harder to see through, so if you have white or blue eyes, people won't be able to see you but (if you have black mesh) you can see them.
    3. Darker colors usually make the pupils less prominent and (especially in photos) you might just get a black hole effect.
    4. Highlights will be less noticeable the lighter your eyes are.
    In short, just think about the look you want and make sure not to go too dark, especially with brown and orange.
