Tomorrow is Thanksgiving as of the release of this video and today I am here to share a quick and easy retro throwback side dish of peas and pearl onions! This dish may well have been seen on your Grandmother's dinner table for special occasions! Now you can add this to your array of delicious food for your family feast! A trip down memory lane to be sure, only updated and made simple with a little help from the freezer section.
Tender peas and pearl onions are a classic throwback to the 40's, 50's and 60's. When grandma made them, she shelled the peas and she peeled those baby onions by boiling them and rubbing them in a towel to get them out of their husks. Then she cooked them further, many times to death. No more dear friends, no more!
Today I present to you a super fast side dish with oomph. I have melted a bit of butter in a saucepan and added a 12 ounce bag of frozen baby peas along with a 12 ounce bag of frozen pearl onions. You will want to steam this for about five minutes in a covered pan over medium heat.
Once the veggies have been steamed and are vibrant and tender, add some seasonings. I have added salt, pepper and chopped fresh thyme and rosemary to the pan. This will compliment the peas and onions to perfection.
Set these next to those glazed carrots and corn casserole and wait for the compliments to come it. Not gonna lie, you can make these even quicker by mixing the frozen peas and onions in a bowl. Cover and microwave for four minutes. Toss with butter and seasonings and boom, done!
Thanksgiving is hard enough. Being able to make dishes ahead of time to free up time is an awesome way to take stress off of yourself. Being able to whip up a delicious classic side dish that will remind everyone of loved ones of yore is priceless. Don't be a perfectionist! Nobody is going to remember if you cooked everything yourself or if you took a little help from the store. Your time with your family is more important than your time in the kitchen!
I hope that this gives you another simple idea of what to add to your holiday spread. I hope you give it a try and I hope you love it!
I hope you all have an amazing and wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by family and friends and being thankful for all you have been blessed with!
    Happy Eating!

I remember this! My mom used to have this frequently! (As a child I didn't especially want peas and onions). I'd forgotten all about it. I'll have to do this now that I have a more mature palet. YES! YES! Creamed pearl onions! 'Comfort food' with a flare! lol : )

Nice throw-back. We had these often when I was a kid and I found a bag of them in my freezer not log ago. My mom made creamed peas mostly for us and that is what I remember when I think of her. She creamed a lot of vegies that I wouldn't cream today but creamed peas sound like the perfect comfort food.

Love this, Noreen! One of my faves now as an adult; when I was a kid there weren't baby peas, but the larger ones that tasted like marbles! I won 't recount the many pea fight tales that led to the kids doing the dishes!!! :)

I too hated peas as a kid until they began selling the baby peas in my late 20's early 30's . So nice and sweet instead of starchy and yucky. As a kid, I quickly learned whenever we had peas to eat them first, while they were still hot and get them out of the way asap . Then I could enjoy the rest of the meal without the yucky peas staring at me, hanging over my head, LOL. My sister was very slow learning this trick and usually sat for like an hour or more at the table after supper was over. Until she finally gave in and ate them . Now days she loves peas .

I love to shell pea's, shuck corn, and snap beans to name a few. I think there is nothing more relaxing. I was one of 6 kids. In the 60's my Mom would hand us a brown grocery bag and say we are going picking. We picked anything her heart desired. The bad thing about that was the neighbor ladies caught on. They never had time to go (ha! they were lazy) so they would show up with an excuse and a brown bag. Could you have the girls pick me a bag? So we would hand deliver them and then they had the nerve to show up when we would be done shucking, snapping, shelling and ask us to help. Well we always had a good time and I think they just wanted in on that. We would sit on our back patio in lawn chairs with a garbage bag beside of us to throw in the mulch pile when done. My mother would make creamed pea's, with taters and pearl onions. I did that recently for my husband who had never had it before. I was told he wants it way more often. Thanks for the sweet memories your retro recipe brought back! Happy Holidays Noreen!

my grandmother always made this, sometimes with a cream sauce. Last time I tried to do this like she did - I bought the jar onions and didn't realize they were pickled! Disaster! but, funny story now. Anyways - thanks and I will now check the freezer case vs the jars, and can have one of my favorite veg dishes from childhood.

Birdseye, no one, sells frozen pearl onions any more in the west! I have complained to Birdseye and they say they make them, but no stores order them. You have to buy fresh huge ones, then manually peel them which takes hours, and they are not tender. It's ridiculous that something people want and are willing to pay for, can't be found in American grocery stores anymore. There are at least 2 favorite recipes I can no longer make because of this. Grocery stores should be ashamed! called Kroger(King Soopers) and Safeway(Albertsons) and let them know. Bet nothing happens.
