Our poker tutorial is a great way to learn the card game loved by millions.
Hey, I'm Nicky Numbers, Professional Poker Player, and now I'm going to help you learn how to make and keep a good poker face.
Now, a poker face is kind of a general term for stoic behavior at the table giving your opponents the minimal amount of behavioral information possible.
The idea is that your behaviors may give away something about your holdings. In poker we call that a "tell".
Well, you want to keep your opponents from potentially getting tells off you. And the way you accomplish that is by minimizing the amount of behavioral information you're giving off.
The best way to do that is to have a routine. So you're dealt two cards. Cards come to you. Your pre-flop routine involves when you look at your cards. Do you look at them right away? Or do you wait until your turn? First you have to decide that.
Then, how do you protect your cards? Do you hold them the entire hand? Or do you cap them? If you cap them, do you use chip or do you use a card capper? If you use a chip, do you just use one chip or do you use more than one?
No matter what you're doing, you want to be consistent.
So for example. A good pre-flop routine might be hold my cards next to my chest when I'm dealt them. Watch the action. Wait until it's my turn, then look down at my cards using both hands, revealing the cards the least. Then if I'm going to fold, fold. Otherwise if I look down and I'm going to continue in the hand, then I cap my cards and I state my action. Call. Then I put in the call chips. Or raise, and then I say the amount I want to make it. Either way I'm getting dealt my cards, I'm holding them there, I'm not looking until it's my turn, then I'm capping them, then I'm acting.
And when you make a bet, it's important that you do it in the same way. So if you're betting sloppy versus if you're betting neat, that makes a very big difference. You want to be consistent. You should literally be able to write down your routines at the table.
Your pre-flop routine when you first get dealt your cards, the actions that you take, and the order in which you take them,
You want to be as robotic as possible so that you really are giving away the minimum amount of behavioral information.
Now, once the cards come out and you're post-flop, you also want to have a routine. For example, how you sit. Do you sit with your hands like this, folded? Do you sit like this? Do you sit behind your chips, in front of your chips? Where are your arms? At any point in hand after you've acted, you want to have a very comfortable routine. You want to be sitting in a way that you can maintain because potentially your opponents may be looking at you for long periods of time while they're trying to make a decision and you want to be giving away the minimum amount while they're doing that. So putting a hand on your head, holding your head. You know, sitting in some easy replicable position consistently, whatever it may be.
The key is that you have one and that you're acting consistently.
If you act the same way pre-flop when you're being dealt cards and then the same way after you act when you're choosing to continue in the hand, and then you also act the same way post-flop, on the flop, turn and river, you're going to be giving away the minimum amount of non-poker information to your opponents. And that's exactly what you want to be doing to make and keep a poker face throughout the entire hand.

This was actually good advice. Some players have absolutely no poker face. They will frown when they don't hit their cards or smile and even hum to themselves when they have a strong hand. I've seen some really bad players.

he explained it -- be robotic, be routine, be consistent. poker face is your overall behavioral conduct at the table.. not just a stone cold face.

Failed to point out you could also manipulate your opponents by giving false information, such as making your opponent want to fold by acting slightly happier if say an ace came out. This can go good or bad though, as your opponent may think oh he is terrible at not giving away information he has an ace lets fold, or he could think, im not falling for that I know he has a terrible hand. Poker is all about manipulation, do it right and you will win. Just always make sure you have a game plan beforenthe game starts.
This is for beginners. That is not at all a good idea unless you are relaxed and can control the state of your body easily. Leave that for pros or those who have been playing poker for a good amount of time. Otherwise, most player will be able to tell when you are faking and when you are not.
JorgeAlberto Herrera The key is to maintain the poker face until a later stage in the game and then give a very small tell (not big enough to be obviously fake in comparison to your composure). It will be just obvious enough in contrast to your previous behaviour and will make it seem as though you slipped up under the pressure as opposed to you purposefully allowing a tell to show. It is possible to slowly set up traps without suspicion by gradually appearing to have more difficulty suppressing nervous tics and other small tells.
This really depends on who you're playing with. If you're playing with beginners, all this body language doesn't really matter, because they will not make an effort to read you anyway

Imagine this is your scenario $500 at risk. Your hand 3 of hearts and 4 of hearts a man goes all-in you call his all in the flop happens 5 of heart and six of heart and 7 of ❤️ boom all of a sudden you have a flush and the other cards were just random after that you won

The number one way to develop a great poker face is to move to Finland for a year.

I know I've seen some players playing a blind hand but I wonder if some have tried that for multiple hands. You can't give a tell if you don't know your hand. And they always say the best players play the opponents not the hand. So, playing blind wouldn't be much different.

You can do this two ways. If you stifle up to much and try to control everything it takes a lot of energy and since people look after things happening not as usual they will be more aware of any micro-expressions. Daniel Negreanu have a different approach in my view. He talks a lot. Distracts and he mix up lies with truth and a random behavior and somehow detach from his feelings and it becimes really hard to know whats going on.

Good poker players also purposely give bad tells. They'll consciously make their hands shake, or they'll purposely swallow spit to look nervous. Or sniff their nose to look pissed off/upset.

Wouldn't it be better to give them a false tell, e.g. a slight smirk when you're bluffing as a way to feign confidence and make them feel you have a strong hand?
Or acting nervous when you have a strong hand (again not making it exaggerated or obvious you are acting).

You can also deceive I think. When you are dealt at losing hand the first time, show a sad face or breathe deep. You lose but the next time, he sees you with this behavior again he will thought you are losing but the truth is you are winning and you are just pretending that you are sad or distraught.
