I haven’t figured out why, but I end up avoiding communication in every way. Im self aware of everything I say and do. This sounds like an edgy attention grabbing comment but it’s the truth. I don’t react when I find something to be repulsive, painful, hilarious, impressive, scary, or breathtaking. Its like my body is still, and I have to manually forge a reaction that fits what my thoughts were when I saw it so that people don’t think i’m ignoring them or that i’m just a rude person. The only behavior I notice myself doing is wiping sweats palms on my pants. This is all I have to say.
We are likely very different, but I really feel the same way sometimes. The most satisfying thing about these videos about body language is when I do the action myself, I actually realise that it is true and I actually do that under the circumstances
It's nice, because he actually had to use his knowledge for practical purposes so it has to be based in reality unlike some of the "pop-sci like" stuff that makes sense but may be more "theory" than anything else.
Just like how he approached those two having a conversation and started talking about space, they started overthinking about it. Like suddenly you start thinking "Well how fast am I supposed to blink?!" :P
My mom said that one way to read body language is to notice how someone acts when they are comfortable. If something suddenly changes, like someone who move around a lot suddenly sits still, then that means something is wrong e.g. they're uncomfortable about that topic or lying.
I think people cross their arms more in public because they don't know what to do with their hands when being spoken to and don't want to be misconstrued as being bored or not paying attention.
It does play a part in comfort, some people are conscientious about moving their arms too much or fiddling with their fingers so they comfort themselves and try to present a calm demeanor by crossing arms.
American spies in WWII were caught in similar fashion because in Europe they don’t switch their fork and knife after cutting meat. It’s the little cultural things that make you stick out like a sore thumb sometimes.
Self soothing: sitting on a chair with your right leg tucked under it pushing the tip of the shoe into the floor. Enjoys the pointed feeling of resistance.

An important caveat is that when interviewing anyone, you need to establish a “baseline” for their individual body language. Maybe they are naturally more nervous or nervous because of the situation. So you first ask questions you already know answers to to see how they react. Watch how they move when they tell the truth. Figure out their “normal”. Then, you can ask calculated questions and see if there is deviation. You are looking for *clusters* of indicators - not isolated indicators.
@Smellegance Exactly. A good investigator/interrogator would take this into account. Untrained people who have watched a few videos on body language use a superficial or pseudoscientific approach and jump to conclusions - “your standing like this so you must be lying!”.
exactly. Specifically for interogation techniques, they leave the suspect alone for quite some time, just to analyse what the suspect does when alone (baseline) and when confronted.
His body language says "I am selling a book. Buy it. This is an ad" ..His body language says "I am selling a book. Buy it. This is an ad"hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh............
The agent in the video, Joe Navarro, has actually published a book about it. It's called "What Every Body is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Speed-Reading People"
Well, There is a series called "Lie to Me" that used to be on Netflix. Atleast in my country. But I'm not too sure if it's 100% scientifically accurate... It is a show for entertainment after all but I believe there are at least a few things that are true in there. Anyway, I loved the series. Was really interesting and entertaining. Didn't like the ending though... Short summary: It's basically about a "private investigator" of sorts, who specialized in reading "micro expressions" and body language and detects lies, deception and all sorts of emotions with his techniques. May be something for you! :)
Ragesquid The show “lie to me” is actually based on Paul Ekman’s research on body language (he’s a psychology professor at USC). Highly recommend checking out his books if you’re interested in that subject.
I've learned by observing my mom throughout the years that she's angry or upset or unsatisfied when she compresses her lips. Really helpful for me to be cautious and know what I did or say wrong😅
It's most likely just because you were reminded of blinking and now you are thinking about it and it feels like you are doing it more when really you aren't
I've read Joe Navarro's book.... and my life was never the same. Path to loneliness as everyone LIES, and when you find it out all by yourself is pretty sad. Very accurate.
he’s an fbi agent and he’s spewing out stuff that other countries can learn about the secret service it makes sense why he’s sitting so uncomfortably. he’s holding back information
When your doing a test and you make eye contact with the teacher, you don’t want to sound suspicious but even acting like you aren’t suspicious is very suspiciously suspicious
That's what happens when I walk past workers in the store trying not to look like I just stole something while making myself look like I definitely stole something when I haven't lol
yeah especially when I’m cheating and try not to look suspicious thinking “man I bet I’m really suspicious now... hurry look out the window and pretend to look for the answers in the sky”
As an autistic person (with ADHD as well), I wonder what would happen if he tried interpreting my movements because I do a lot of random nonverbal movements and don't do a lot of "those nonverbals that neurotypical people just do instinctively when talking to someone." whereas I don't even know they exist.
Considering he said he's basically looking for sudden changes and for deliberate attempts to keep body language under wraps... You'd most likely be pretty safe.
Lol. He said natural blink rate is 8 times a minute and then proceeds to blink 9 times in the following ten seconds. I’d say he’s keeping trade secrets
I think he meant naturally. Like, if your relaxing or just waking around, I think the blinking rate works. But he was in an interview and he was talking about blinking so I think ah instinct is to blink
@@squirm8272 but my ex was a heavy blinker... He would like blink regular and then fast and hard a few times but he was a messed up lying cheating jerk so he was just always hiding something. Lol... My father is the passive aggressive type, who often guilt trips and then tries to brush it off and then tries to put something on you then brush it off and we’re always being sarcastic. theres mistrust in the relationship, constant lies and a rocky marriage. Picking up on his intentions and what he tries to do to me when he speaks. He uses vague language so I can never really hold something against him without sounding accusatory and angered.
It may be worthwhile to try and get fully tested for ASD, often times this manifests with feelings of disconnectedness and/or self-isolation. This man should be teaching Professors of Psychology, he is so good.
Stop watching T.V.
@Smellegance Exactly. A good investigator/interrogator would take this into account. Untrained people who have watched a few videos on body language use a superficial or pseudoscientific approach and jump to conclusions - “your standing like this so you must be lying!”.
@James surprisal...can u suggest so good book for layman person to understand non verbal communication..
exactly. Specifically for interogation techniques, they leave the suspect alone for quite some time, just to analyse what the suspect does when alone (baseline) and when confronted.

Didn't like the ending though...
Short summary: It's basically about a "private investigator" of sorts, who specialized in reading "micro expressions" and body language and detects lies, deception and all sorts of emotions with his techniques. May be something for you! :)
