Hey, I'm Nicky Numbers, Professional Poker Player, and I'm going to help you learn how to size your raises.
The first thing you need to know about raising is when you can raise and when you can't because it's so common for people to confuse the terms "bet" and "raise".
Pre-flop, there are blinds. Say in this example, the blinds are 25/50. Well, the minimum raise that you can make in pre-flop is twice the size of the big blind, also referred to as a 2X raise, where the X is a shorthand for the multiplication symbol. So 2X the big blind means two times the big blind. 2-1/2X the big blind is two and a half times the big blind.
So here we have blinds of $25 and $50. If I were to raise to 3 times the big blind, I would make it 3 times $50 or $150. A standard raise pre-flop is anywhere from two big blinds all the way up to ten big blinds, depending on the game.
However, it's very common to see raises of two big blinds, two and a half big blinds, even two and a quarter big blinds or three big blinds or four big blinds. Those are the amounts you're going to see the overwhelming majority of the time.
The key is that when you're raising pre-flop, that you stick with an amount and you stay with it.
So if I'm going to raise to $125 pre-flop, which is two and a half times the big blind, then I'm going to raise two and a half times the big blind consistently. That way I don't give my opponents any information.
If I sometimes make it three times the big blind at $150, and then other times I only minimum raise and make it $100 and still make it other times I raise 4X and make it $200, well then I have differing raise sizes which means I'm going to fall into a pattern over time of raising certain amounts with certain kinds of hands. I may raise more with strong hands that I'm trying to protect or I may raise less with strong hands to try to get action. But it's very common for people to fall into some kind of pattern where they play their strong hands a certain way and their weaker hands a different way. This pattern can be exploited by your opponents. So what I strongly encourage you to do is to raise a consistent amount every single time, whatever the multiple of the big blind might be.
On the flop, turn, and river, it works a little bit differently because there are no blinds which are forced bets so now your opponent would have had to make a bet first in order for you to have an opportunity to raise, and you can't control their bet amount so it's not a known entity like with the blinds. That means that you're going to have to act with regard of the size of their bet.
Your opponents will typically be betting based on the size of the pot, somewhere between half the pot, all the way up to the full pot. And when you raise them, I strongly suggest your raise three times whatever their previous total wager was.
So let's say you have a pot with $475 in it. And your opponent makes a bet, and let's say they bet $300. Well, if they bet $300, raising 3 times that amount would be three times $300 or $900. So if I was going to raise this $300, I would make it $900.
A raise post-flop of three times your opponent's previous total wager is going to be very effective at putting them to a meaningful decision. Sometimes there may be situations where you're raising more, and there may be situations where you're raising less, as far as a multiple of their bet.
The key is that you're consistent, so you can prevent your opponents from attaining information from you about your hand based on the way you bet or raise.

This is not a bad rule of thumb, but I would also state that there are exceptions. If I am in an early position with hands like AK, QQ, JJ, or TT, I would consider making a much larger pre-flop raise. This is giving information away intentionally. The purpose is to put pressure on more marginal hands to fold and also to gain information on players who have better position and make it more difficult on them to slow play a premium starting hand.
Always play NL games, limitted are shits, u raised w AA and will get called by the whole table and lost.

I dont know. I think for beginners its not a bad thing to have a feeling for how strong their hand is and make an according bet/raise. An experienced player also could be inconsistend with bets/raises to mislead other players. It really depends on your skills and the skills of other players. If you get better with poker you play your opponents not your cards.
I've gotten this game pretty well, for my second day. I think im head of my curve. However, those pieces you layed down were gems. You explaining the necessary synergy of lower cards. Then this video explaining the concealing of your betting habits. Between those two pieces, and understanding how/when to do the opposite; Ima get my skills up.

what about betting after the flop ? Lets say small and big blind is 25 / 50. Flop happens, and one of the players starts the bet with a raise of 100. The next player, if he wants to re-raise, does he have to put in 200 now which is double from the first raiser or can he just put in 100 and then raise 50 ,a total of 150 instead of 200 ?
First off, you can't start with a raise after the flop. If you put chips in the middle while noone has bet the flop yet, it's called a bet and not a raise.
To your question ...
it's very simple: You always have to raise for at least the bet size if it hasn't been raised yet, and you have to re-raise for at least the last raise size in order to re-raise a previous raise.
For example:
Blinds are 25/50. Someone bets 300 after the flop. In order to raise you have to raise it to 600+. If someone else now wants to re-raise your 600 chips he has to raise for another 300+ (the size of your raise). Let's say he raises to 1000.
Post-flop it's been
BET (300) - RAISE (600) - RE-RAISE (1000).
If you wanted to re-re-raise this person now you would have to raise to at least 1400 since the last raise was for 400 more chips.
150 is ok I think, just raise something that is a multiple of the Big Blind. Also ist uncommon to raise less than the previous bet/raise. So lets say BB is 50. Post flop someone bets 200, its uncommon (but I think possible) to raise to 250 (200 call + another 50 raise). In that case you would call or raise at least to 400 or even more.
so if the big blind is 10$ and i want to raise pre flop, the minimu raise would be 20$. now, is that 20$ i put in on top of the big blind or added to it making my raise a total of 30$?

The X is not a multiplication sign. It’s a variable that represents the big blind. So 2x means 2 times the big blind.
I dont know if x means the (amount of the) BB or multiplication sign, but the consequence is the same. Bet multiples of the BB
@@dierampe the consequences are the same but every normal person who has had 7th grade algebra should be able to understand that the x stands for the BB and not for a multiplication sign. If you can I think it’s better to mix your bets that are random so your opponents have to think. Making them think will confuse them more than if you are consistent. What’s better,that they can’t tell what you are doing because you always bet the same amount or if your bet is random. Random betting, unless they know you are random betting could make them consider the amount you bet when it really has no meaning and can cause them to make a mistake. Or if you are really good at it, you can fake tells by creating a tell on purpose so that when it counts on a big hand you do the opposite. Ok, it’s really a hard thing to do but it’s very powerful against a player who watches intently who will think he knows what you are doing because of previous tells. I think faking tells is the best trick against a good player who watches everything. What do you think about wearing sunglasses? If a hoodie or big hat or anything that hides your face? What should someone do who has an uncontrollable twitch that triggers when they have a good hand?
The aim is not to be confusing, it's to be predictable. Once you have established a playstyle presence at the table, then you can start bluffing some hands with the appearance of playing particular other hands. If you are trying to be intentionally confusing, good players will simply play basic tight-aggressive strategy, folding to you most of the time, and raising to you when you actually have a hand, which in the long run gives them profitability, and you an empty wallet.
Let me start off by saying I am new to cards, PERIOD. I am learning how to play Texas Holdem and Five card Draw. Within this short time (two weeks or so) I've discovered that I have an extremely hard time knowing when to fold, and when to bluff. In my mind, a player should NEVER fold because they could possibly rake the pot with a weak hand but have the highest card. When I fold, it's generally because I cant call or raise because I want to continue to play the next hand or two which may be my last lol. I would like to know how to look at my hand and say, I need to fold right now, or I need to stay in and bluff my opponent by going ALL IN. In the video above, I see that you raised your opponent to 900. Is this based on your strong hand, weak hand, or no hand at all? Thanks!!

In my oppinion as a mediocre player in Poker you almost never bluff. Like have nothing and just bet/raise insane to win. Its much much more common to bet/raise to protect your hand (semi-bluff) or your ahead and just want to get money in the pot. Also sometimes you can do a small/medium bet just to get information on your opponents if they play passive. Do they call instant? Do they re-Raise or just pass. That can tell you a lot on how good your hand is at the moment.
Pay to learn. Or develop a passion for yourself and be autodidact. The sport is cutthroat.
At lower stakes or play koney stakes (where I recommend you learn), there is no point in trying any fancy moves on your opponents because they will not understand or respect them. So in general when you're starting out, if you have a strong made hand or a good chance of making that hand (4 cards to a flush on the flop) then you should bet or raise depending on previous action.
If you have a weak hand that has missed the board or only has high card/ middle pair then you should be very careful - if people are betting aggressively, they almost certainly have you beat and you should fold.
