    ℹ️About the episode:
After spending a week at Disney's Fort Wilderness, we're off to Savannah Georgia and staying in Hilton Head Harbor RV park and marina. The mysterious thumping coming from beneath the Ford F450 continues to draw concern and it got so bad we had to pull over to investigate, but found nothing. After arriving to the RV park, we found the forward storage bay door open due to a broken latch, but we later discover that is not the cause of the thumping.
Savannah, GA is one of the oldest cities in the union. It's also one of the most beautiful and a great location for a photo shoot. We met up with KYD Insider Barry for an early morning session at Forsyth Park in Savannah before hosting a KYD Insider meet-up. It's always great to connect with the community and hear stories first hand. We wish we could continue to do public meet-ups, but they became too difficult to coordinate and manage.

Former Deputy (retired disabled) in one year the Missouri Hwy Patrol lost 5 Troopers being hit on roadside stops. That was the year my son graduated from the Academy............. nervous Mom & Dad. I started doing passenger side driver contacts........much safer! Roadside pull overs are a accident waiting to happen.........that's why God made parking lots :)

Kirk Danielson Here in Illinois we have "Scott's Law" mandating a slowdown and moving a lane over for emergency vehicles on the shoulder. Fines are higher. There have been multiple bad situations even in 2019 alone. And it's uncanny how impaired drivers seem to gravitate right at stopped emergency cars with lights flashing, like moths to a flame. Crazy.

I have a Super Duty F350 DRW and live in a state with no mudflap laws. In both Georgia and Florida, the law stipulates mudflaps for open wheels and exempts those that have fender covering such as a Super Duty DRW. If you had a stake bed, you would be required by law to have mud flaps. The bed structure and and extended fenders exempt your F450. On that same note, a responsible dealership would not turn you loose with that sort of violation. That said, I have flaps that are mounted on the rear hitch to protect my fifth wheel. I understand the reasoning and rational for the laws, but most of my windshield strikes came from trucks traveling in the opposite direction on a two-way highway.

Being from Louisiana, I can supply you with a Sherman anecdote. Louisiana State University - LSU - once was only a small military school. Hence its nickname, The Old War School. When southern states were seceding at the start of the Civil War, the thirteen cadets all joined the Confederacy. The commandant, supplied by the U.S. Army, went north. But he came back! His name? William Tecumseh Sherman.

Left disney after a week lived hikton head so we went back to stay on our trip back to Virginia. The whole family loved hilton head more then Disney's campground. But like my hair color lots of changes from when i was 12 to being 39 now. So they might of improved drastically in Florida. Enjoy trip down memory lane.

Use LOCTITE® THREADLOCKER BLUE 242® for the Camlock screws. But, this is story is important. You know how you always have to tell kids not to slam the door? Well, door lock parts came loose inside the latch. My sweetheart, first day home from surgery had to get out of bed, take a screwdriver I handed her through the window and remove the mounting screws for the door latch assembly so I could get in the house. The deadbolt had failed and neither the red leaver not my key would operate it. Drilling the lock would not have done it.
All parts were located. I reassembled it, threadlocking as appropriate. When you drive your house around, you have to expect some entropy. And, outsmart it.

I have a friend that had what turned out to be a piece of wooden pallet INSIDE her mounted tires on her Ford Escape. This was after going to the dealership numerous times for this sound that couldn’t be located. The sound was mainly when driving slow. When she’d speed up - no sound - they determined this was because the wood didn’t rumble around any more then with speed. All this to say it could be the most random thing. You just never know. I always enjoy your videos! Thank you all!

  • @akbychoice

Mudflats by weather-tech was the first thing I added to the rear of our F450, then the Gooseneck ball, then the floor liners weather-tech up front - Husky in the rear, dog hammock for the back seat, CB and dash cam ( I’ve since stopped using a dash cam ) now I use my phone ( with an app ) mounted in Ram-Mount.
Look for any tape on your frame, tie rods etc etc.. You would be surprised how loud a piece of tape flapping under a vehicle ( or on top ) makes going down the road. If you don’t have the noise without the trailer in tow, it’s most likely just the fifth wheel slop. Look to see if there is an adjustment. Semi fifth wheels have to be adjusted occasionally.

It uses lettuce tomatoe onion then mandarin oranges 🍊 and pineapple of course chicken breast cubed and sliced almonds on the top. Now that you have a dually truck, you will want to check between the tire pairs for rocks, sticks and other debris, especially after traveling on unpaved roads. The big problem is getting a rock stuck in there. It will typically wear a hole in BOTH tires and can also be a source of thumping. If the thump is only on concrete highways and not on blacktop, then it is likely the expansion joints in the concrete. (Drives me nuts when I tow...).

When I was in the Air Force we flew into Savannah and was there about 2 weeks . On the weekend we didnt have any flying so about 5 of us went to the RIVERWALK , it was reopened because Of renovations. There was this small little bar and so we go in and listen to this guy singing and playing his guitar, he was really good . He finished his song and we applauded. Some guy come over and told us To quieten down. I assure you all we did was clap our hands . So ,he finished the next song and we clapped our hands . Wrong thing to do, we were told to leave. Until this day we cant thing of anything we were doing that was wrong. I thought that was the thing you do when you like someone's performance , was clap your hands. That was the last time I was on the Riverwalk. Mid 1980's.

Someone many have already commented, but you can "boondock" at the Savannah visitors center for $8 per night, no hook ups but your are right down town, short walk to everything, we have done it twice, we have a Vilano (325) 35ft fifth wheel, little tight getting into the lot, but worth it. Always some 40 ft motor homes there. Just a short walk to the Coffee Company!

So, a funny thing happened this past Thursday. My wife and I were in Key West for our anniversary. We were sitting at a light waiting for it to change when I notice a Ford F-250 drive by. I seem to notice them more since I want to get one. As I watch it pass by I see your sticker on the back window. It even had the rock guard flaps on the back. If I didn’t already know you have upgraded to the F-450 I would have chased them down.

You guys need an auxiliary fuel tank. I go roughly 900 miles between stops for fuel while towing if I wait til empty. I usually fill up while the 5th wheel is in the campground. Gives me more options on where to buy fuel, and less of a pain than truckstops.

I'm sure you've figured this out by now, but the mysterious thump may be mud flaps. Front mud flaps. My F450 had that same thump on a trip and we finally figured it out after a few hundred miles. The right semi would pass, and THUMP. Front mud flaps would hit the running board and make the noise. Hope that might help you!

One draw back to a 5th wheel is the slack in the hitch, the hitch needs to move and rotate freely. thus it thumps with the load of trailer. You will get use to it. been towing 5th wheels and goose necks for years they all make some noise.

Seeing as it says this video is 3 years old I'm sure you've already gotten this comment multiple times, but as a native Savannah and I have to tell you that you're Googling was wrong it was not because it's charming and cute it was because the citizens of Savannah knew that General Sherman had burn Atlanta and they were determined to show him so much hospitality and Southern kindness and charm that he spared the city. I've heard that my entire life so I don't know what source you had but it wasn't cuz it was a cute City.

Once again a great episode! I didn't catch if you figured out the thumping noise..?? I had a time with the same thing going on. I found out as we were going along that a rock had wedged in between the rear duals. OK cool.. got the rock out but later on, say a 400 miles later, had a blow out with one of the tires on the duals that had the rock wedged. As we were off the side of a highway that wasn't meant to pull off the side, we found out that not only the blown tire had a severe side wall scuff but both tire were impacted. The roadside service had only one tire for us and so limped back home to replaced the other. Now I tend to check the duals pretty much each time I refuel. Thanks again for the vid and keep safe out there!

@keepyourdaydream I too had a ford pickup that made the thumping noise. I can almost guarantee that it is the overload leafs on the rear axle preloading and unloading on their respective bump stops. Unlike other manufacturers Ford uses an overload leaf that sits on top of the leaf Spring pack which requires it to have a separate stop for it to rest on. Due to this and the fact that it is not connected with a shackle it can at times become unloaded to the point where it separates from the stop and then becomes reloaded and makes contact with said stop creating that thumping noise that you hear. I could be wrong but I think that is a strong possibility as to the noise you are hearing.

Hello: I'm a time traveler from 2021..Did you know you're a hero to a ton of folks?? We just did a trip to Colorado (non RV) and was considering renting one. Now, after we get a truck, we're definitely thinking of a "starter" RV for our family.

When your wife drops everything to come and look at your newly installed mudflaps on your pick up truck you know you got the "cream of the crop" girl. Just awesome, I am sure my girl would have thrown the spatula right at me. Glad to see Orlando is still under construction a year later.....

I really love the suspense building as we watch to solve the mystery of the thumping. I worried while we were away camping for a week ourselves that I’d be behind on this post that solves it. Thankfully (though I’m sure you don’t feel that way), it wasn’t solved in this epi!

You guys are one of my favorite RUclipsrs. I don't know how old you are (you don't look or seem old), even though you have a teenage daughter going to college and two teen boys, and one of them (almost) going into the USAF. Did you ever thought 20, 10 or even five years ago that you could live by traveling and doing RUclips? Yeah know you invested in a cabin and rent it out when you're not using it yourself for Christmas holidays etc. And you probably also talks or lectures about RV life. I just think it's a great way to spend your life and not having 9-5 jobs. What did you do before rv life and what did your family and friends think of you becoming independent RUclipsrs and do traveling as an "alternative" lifestyle?

Mud flaps are not universally required by law, perhaps your state but not all states. Texas is the ONE that has the most hype, however, I have been hauling my 5th wheel via Ford duallys since 2002 and mud flap requirement has never been an issue or concern (registration in FL).

Hey Marc, check your front tire hubcaps and see if they are turned towards the lock or auto. If they are set at lock the front axle will still engage making a thumping sound. Make sure they’re on auto. That might help.

Theres a couple of ways to remove "tourists" from photos that are pretty easy. If youre on a tripod, in Photoshop, the Median stack function in scripts. Just set up on a tripod, and take several identical photos about 30sec to 2 min apart depending on how fast people are shifting in the scene. Its almost 100% automated unless someone is in roughly the same spot the whole time.

Like one of the other subscribers said you could have something lodged between your rear tires. Dually trucks are not the best ride until you are hauling something, then it's like a Cadillac. Regardless, I prefer that type of suspension rather than the soft ride of your usual f150.

It was the same on my new F150 it drove me crazy for ages until i figured it out. Many stops on the side of the road yanking and pulling crap, and they only made the noise when the wind blew a certain way.

  • @elmer665544
    @elmer665544 5 лет назад

I mentioned this in the comments in the cat scale video. Regarding the noise, check that the cam levers on the B&W puck system are correctly adjusted and locked in tightly. I have the same Ford puck system and B&W hitch for my Grand Design Reflection 303RLS. The cam locks need to be adjusted so the levers are tight when locked in. I suspect it is something in the hitch system.

If I haul anything loose (not tied down) in my truck bed with my 5th wheel connected, wind turbulence is so severe that it can lift wood blocks a couple of pounds in weight and throw them out over the tailgate. When they rattled I could feel it in the floor boards. The first time I thought something was wrong, but when I saw my wheel chocks flipping up around the hitch in my rear view mirror (higher than the bed), I learned that was it.

New subscriber! Just my .02 cents , I've recently started flipping Campers to sell and i noticed that the 5th wheels i pull do make a lot of noise, regardless of the size of the 5th they all make unnecessary noises. BUT i noticed the larger units that have the airbag on the tongue of the 5th wheel pull so much quieter and not as rugged. The airbag takes the grunt of the bumps. I'd recommend looking into new tongues with an airbag and convert it to an air ride tongue. It'll prob cost over a grand to do it but you wouldn't believe the differences between them. Being new to 5th wheels myself that's just my opinion. Good luck and safe travels

Watching that the lower door latch broke, maybe you forgot to close and lock it, makes me think I should go back to my checklist, I think all of us after years of rving, we get complacent and think we did everything, sometimes we are our own worst enemies... hopefully it is covered under warranty or at least a very cheap repair. Keep up the great videos, I am picking away at our summer to remember checklist, and hope to knock a few more off this July 4th holiday.

Knew an older fella once who kept hearing a thumping noise when driving and kept bringing it into the shop. So finally the mechanic rode with the gentleman down the road only to find out he was running over the reflectors in the road the entire time he drove. I’m sure it’s not your case but similar story to say the least.

Sorry you guys are having so many issues with your fridge. I had similar on my previous rig and on my new one went with the residential style and although anything mechanical can have problems, I am loving as compared to the traditional RV 12volt/propane style. Food looks delicious...hope it’s fixed for you soon.
