ℹ️About the episode:
Detroit is known for steel and is long recognized as the historic heart of the American automotive industry. We were lucky to have been invited to tour Atlas Tube, a division of Zekelman Industries, to see how RV axles, hitches and steel tubing is made. Each step of the process is captivating as we watched a 50,000 steel coil be transformed into a usable product in a matter of minutes. If you enjoy watching shows like How it's Made, then you're sure to like this episode.
We really should have visited the Ford Museum or tried to coordinate a plant tour. We reached out to Ford to get access to the KY plant, which is where they build Super Duties (F250 F350 F450), but something about union issues stopped us. I'm sure we'll be back to Detroit, MI and now we have something left to do!

Trish could totally revive "How It's Made" LOL, that was an excellent narrative and as a fan of How It's Made, it felt really natural!
We’ve had factory installed JT Strongarm stabilizers on our fifth wheel since 2011. They are excellent! No wiggle. No bounce. Just solid sitting! We’ve had 14 people walking around in our rig and it was very stable! Highly recommend them!
Guys, Ear lady's husband here. I'm a metal shop teacher.....guess what were watching in class tomorrow!
Keep up the good work.
That's awesome!
Started watching KYD a few weeks ago and decided to start from the beginning and watch straight through. How fitting that I should finish up here with a video of my hometown, Detroit. Unfortunately, now I have to wait for Sunday to catch new videos. Thanks for the wonderful content. KYD is one of the best channels I've come across on RUclips, period.
Mark and Trish, you should market some of these videos to the companies and cities for their promotional departments. Between Mark's videography and editing and Trish's research and narrative, you all could make watching grass grow interesting! I look forward to your videos every week.
Yes! I've been thinking the exact same thing!
-My grandpa is a Commodore at GPYC where you guys were :p
-I work for Ryder, the company that sets up transportation for Atlas Tube.
- We keep our boat in St Clair and go downriver all the time in the summer.
Felt like you guys were in my backyard this entire video and it had me beaming! Thank you for soaking up the summer sun and fresh water in our gorgeous city
My home town. And the Boblo Boat was beautiful in the day. I was a nanny for the captain's kids. And Cedar Point is amazing theme park.
Nice presentation! The metal tube plant was really interesting! Love the Chris Craft and her captain. The view from the top of your rig going down the road is pretty cool too!
Made in America 🇺🇸 Baby! I'm also digging the view from the rig top cam, makes you want to duck going under those overpasses though! 😂 Thanks for another very informative video!
Definitely felt like I needed to duck!
I liked that view also!
I was going to comment the same thing! It's cutting really close up there LOl!
Thanks for the trip to Detroit as I was born their 82 years ago
That factory tour was super interesting 👌. Thanks.
Hey there guys, our Open Range Roamer 347RES 5th Wheel came with the JT Strong Arm Stabilizer Bars. They are mounted on each of the Lippert Leveling jack front and back, similar to what you showed in the video. They do an excellent job of taking the movement out of our rig when we are setup. Once you are leveled out, you lock them in and tap the Ground Control front and rear to take up the any slack. We have been using them for three years now with no issues.
I too am a proud Detroit native. My dad painted the Boblo boats every spring. I believe there were 3 of them at one time. I worked for a DYC member that did repairs at the club. I now live in AZ. What a great video to take me down memory lane. Thanks!
Very cool tube plant tour! I work for a company that designs and engineers the annealing furnaces the steel coils go in before they show up to the tube plant to make the steel workable. Cool stuff!
Did anybody else duck, when they went under the overpass with the camera up high? Dang!
Hahaha yep! Then I thought about the 13' clearance train overpass here and that I barely fit under that
I installed the JT Strong arms on my 5th wheel earlier this year. I installed them for our first trip with our 4 month old at the time. We didn't want the movement of the trailer to wake him up or to wake up my 6 year old daughter when mom got up to feed him at night. The JT's make the trailer super solid. I would defiantly recommend them. fairly easy to install, takes a few hours with the right tools. I do believe you need to order different brackets if you have the circle type landing pads vs the square landing pads though. Love the videos, keep it up!
I’d just like to say that this video deserves an award. That factory tour could be some of the best cinematography on you tube in a long time. Well done!!!
Thanks. The sound was SO LOUD we could hardly talk inside which is why we had to voice over.
Thank you for the memories. My daughter and I have been living in Florida for the past fourteen years. But we originally hail from Detroit. To see the Renaissance Center still standing tall brought tears. Bob-Lo Boat, wow, that a memory. Used to ride that a great deal when I was a kid, last time I rode was 32 years ago when I was sixteen, very shortly before they closed the amusement park and decommissioned the boat. The Ambassador Bridge over to Ontario, Canada, Lake St. Clair, Detroit Yacht Club, again all I can say is thank you for the memories.
I from Michigan. And a pipefitter i was just working there Saturday, my brother inlaw works there too
As a guy that's been working with steel for 45 years I found the first part of your video at the Atlas steel plant very interesting. Great video as always.
I had to watch it twice, I felt like I missed something. It felt short. Thanks for sharing your journey with us all.
We needed one more segment. The Ford Museum or F150 plant tour would have been perfect, but we used our time to catch-up with family too. More to do when we come back.
@@KeepYourDaydream it's all good.
WOW..This video brought back so many memories of my Dad..He was a Trucker that delivered the Rolls of Steal to Detroit, way back in the 60s and 70s . IT was very interesting to see what that steal was made into . My Dad has passed away in 93, but my traveling fever, the dream of hitting the roads, came from my dad. Here is an interesting fact about traveling the roads My dad taught me .. ALL HIGHWAYS AND ROUTE NUMBERS THAT ARE ODD NUMBERS ARE NORTH TO SOUTH ( Like I-75, I-95, RT 27 ) and EVEN NUMBERS ARE EAST TO WEST ( Like I-70 and Rt 66.)..So I always tell people I never get lost .
Gus is a treasure! What a fun trip
Welcome to our great state of Michigan! (Sorry about the roads). Oh! Yeah. Great video.
That's so cool I actually haul tube steel loads out of that atlas plant in Plymouth Michigan and I haul them to rv builders. Very cool episode.
I enjoyed this episode very much personally. Back in the days Gus's boat was built many in my family worked at Ingersoll Rand in Phillipsburg NJ and Easton PA. I was blessed to work with them for summer employment while going to college. Your well produced tour brought back many memories. You guys brought together all the elements of hard work: the how-it's-done to enjoying the fruits of its success shared with generational families. Kudos!
Loved the top of the rig shot. I may have to get a mount to go up there.
Cool video, I worked in the steel industry in Chicago (Central Steel & Wire Co.) for 43 years. We have a plant in Detroit. I worked up to foreman in the Brass, Copper and Stainless Dept. Cloud Gate (the bean) in Chicago was made from stainless out of our plant. That was a nice looking boat you were on. Take care and be safe!!!
I love your videos and the places you go and the things you show us, but I also wanted to mention that I also love your musical choices!! Keep up the great work!
Hi guys
I can say that the JT Strong arm stabilizers are awesome. We installed them this summer on our 16.5 NoBo travel trailer by forest river. It took some work as our jacks are mounted different on our camper for clearance. We love them the camper is solid as a rock. They are worth every penny and of course since we got them in Canada they were a bit more. We also just wanted to say we love your channel and wear our KYD shirts as often as we can. You guys are a inspiration to us. Keep up the great work
Had no idea JTS could be attached in the back, no one at the dealership told me that. I put them in in the front. Well looks like I have my next project
I had to change my foot pads to allow the JT's to fit on the rear of our 30' fifth wheel. I used the xchocks with them but tried them without the xchocks once...gave the xchocks to a friend of ours cuz I didn't need them, the JT's took out all the movement. Remember to tighten the t bars then jack up all your Jack's one inch to take out the slack.
You will love Cedar Point. Their RV Park is very nice too. Plus that gets you in the park an hour early!
Fun episode. As always, the final segment of hwy footage does my heart good. Thank you for sharing all the good times this week.
No way. You guys are only one hour from me. That is awesome that you have family from there
That steel plant brought back a lot of memories from when I hauled coils back in the 90's. Nice to see how things we use in our every day lives come into being.
The antique tractor episode was epic 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Enjoy your videos of families having fun!
The Dr. Squatch soap ad before your video is HILARIOUS!!!!
This is my husband's favorite KYD video. He kept saying, "Wow!" like a kid ☺
That gentleman piloting that Ship.
(That ain't no boat😀) With the flowered captains cap. Did more insightful site seeing of Detroit in a long time 👍😀🙏❗
I’m on my second set of my strong arm, first set was in the jayco travel trailer. My second set is on my reflection 311bhs 5er, had to get the over 58” I found a new open box set on eBay for $160, anyway with the xchock and A frame under the pin box it’s almost rock solid totally worth it IMO.
I have been waiting all day to be able to sit down and catch up! We saw a grand design imagine today at the truck stop by our house. It was a really nice rig! My husband turned into a big kid it was great! Once our son graduates highschool I have a feeling we will be on the road full time! I thought I had an itch to go but my husband just had a switch flipped.
Amazing production value KYD..every bit as good as a fine tuned Michigan steel plant. Thank you for awesome video.
Seeing Detroit by boat is the smartest and safest way to see the city. It's a shame what happened to our former industries from the rust belt states. Nice to see there are some factories still operating. Nice vid!
Amazing videography at the steal tube plant! Wow...what a tour! Thank you for sharing your Detroit adventures with us :-)
I have had the JT Strong Arms, on my 5er, for a complete season now, night and day different! There is a bit of a learning curve the first few times of setting them up, but once you get setup down, they work amazing. They take out almost all of the bounce and rock from adults moving around inside.
I saw it from Germany. Working in a company which makes these lines I was impressed by your cool visit and the filmed and edited result. Amazing!
Now How cool was that! Thank you. I love you take us places we will never go. Love KYD family.
The music selection for the boat ride was spot on classic. I’ll watch again just for that.
Oh, be still my heart! Metallurgy and metal working is how I cut my teeth in engineering! Loved the tube shop tour!!
Hello Marc. I just installed those JT strong arms on my travel trailer , have not had a chance to try them out ..going camping in the next few weeks looking forward to use them. Suppose to take away the inside wobble movement of the camper .. love all your videos , looking forward to all you guys do .all good stuff .. love it .. especially the Way you say. The great Smokey mountain national park. ..crack me up every time I view that ....take care. Db
Welcome to the Motor City. The best walleye fishing in Michigan is in the Detroit River. Grew up there as well and ate at Rams Horn!
Amazing!! My grandfather had a VERY similar Chris Craft (a lot older, more wood) and was a member of Detroit Yacht Club for years!!
And my wife worked on Boblo Island for a summer during university!! That boat was her ride to work!!
Love the tour of Atlas Tube! Great video!
Adding JT Strongarm stabilizers has been one of our best upgrades to our Reflection 295RL. Along with the X-chocks they take out 90% or more of the shaking in our trailer. Installing is definitely doable if you have a few tools and a couple of hours.
I would never own a rig without JT strong arms. They make a huge difference. Combining them with x-chocks works very well. Definitely worth the investment!
great video as always. Know the Steel Plants very well... Enjoy your travels.
Ooh that's how!! Cool tour!
and thanks for the recommendation for the stabalizers. defenitely going to order those. :)
What a fun and very interesting video. Love seeing what all is made in America. Loved meeting all the people and family as well. Trish did such a great job at the narration in the plant, I thought I was watching "How It's Made" on TV. lol Well done! Loved learning the history of the town as well as seeing some of the sights. Just a very fun video, thank you! Hugs, Brenda
Hope you enjoyed the Motor City !! Best memories ever riding the Bob-Lo boat to Bob-lo Island!!!
Excellent commentary on the tour Trish. Looked like a great boat adventure.
Did you guys see the mail boat near the Ambassador Bridge? It’s the JW Wescott and it delivers the mail to the freighters traveling up bound and down bound on the Detroit River. It’s the only boat in the USA with its own zip code.
Really enjoying your travels!! We own a small MH and have been up and down the east coast a number of times and west once! Great Smoky Mtn NP is one of our favorites and I really enjoyed the video of your visit there! Safe travels!
Glad you guys made it to Detroit. We're an interesting bunch...but the city has a lot to offer.
love the view from the top of the rig. Great addition.
Love watching you guys. The boat trip on St. Clair brought back memories of traveling from near Mineola Texas on a fishing trip. Now that you have inspired us to RV my wife and I plan on making that area in RV as soon as I finish a stem cell transplant for a cancer. Look forward to maybe see you guys one day. If you ever find yourself near Mineola say hi. Thank you for allowing us to travel with you.
Fantastic video. This was a great segment and Trish, thanks for the stats on the coils and semi axle rates. This was an excellent segment on a very unique industry. Nothing like American manufacturing!
OMG! That Chris Craft is spectacular! She is a thing of beauty!
Your trip to Ohio is amazing. The roads the trees just like home. You are probably not in Ohio anymore but Sandusky is only 3 hrs from us and Cedar Point is a BLAST!!! Hope you guys loved it!! Loved the video and the view of your rig too!! Thanks for the tips for the stabilizer supports. I will have to put them on our wish list so when we finally purchase our Wildwood t.t. I will have everything we need to get started!!
I had JT Strongarms on my last fifth wheel on just the front jacks. Yes it made a difference and were worth the cost... Super easy install on my lippert frame because it was already prepped for the JT's.. No drilling required... Only bad part is remembering to loosen the T handles before retracting but you only forget once.
Thanks for the tour, great prespective....
Thanks for the tour of Detroit!! We are going to have to check out the stabilizers your neighbor had, they look like they would work great!
What a fun video! We use to live in Ann Arbor and went to Detroit often, and on occasion we would drive over to Windsor, Canada. You guys put together the best videos....thanks for sharing.
just on time! enjoying the videos and the cool adventures!
Bonus points for the Tigers hat!
I have spent a lot of time in Detroit on consulting gigs but, you folks sure made it more fun than I had...LOL. Stay safe and pleasant travels.
Another great video. Thanks for taking us along! KYD getting it done. Enjoying life! Love you guys
I wore your shirt today 👍
This was so neat, thanks for sharing and explaining the tour!
Looking forward to the cedar point video....from Michigan.....I'm 45 years old and been going to cedar point since I was 5 and my kids have been going since they were 8months old.... absolutely love it there ...it's our happy place can't wait to see the video
Great video! Welcome to Michigan. Enjoy your stay!
That's so cool how they make the tubes!
Dude that tour was legit, thank you so much!
Wow fascinating. Love the Atlas tube video
Thanks for a great mix of travel and glad for you and family.
Another great video. What a nice boat ride!
Very fascinating tour.
Reminded me of an episode of “how it’s made”. Love it!
I have the stabilizers for under the door and in the back. They work great for my 28 ft, they also help stability the RV in high winds when ur parked.
Nice you all were here in Michigan I’m Detroit born and raised! Still live here about half hour from Detroit🥰 I also worked at Cedar Point for a summer season was one of the best experiences of my life! Hope you all enjoyed my stomping grounds😃
This video was totally awesome and informative. I loved it. Detroit rocks!
The process itself isn't the highlight. It's the machinery that is doing the work. It's fascinating to someone, probably with just a pencil and paper designed every part on the machine.
I watch your videos every week. This one was really interesting...loved the view from the water and all the history. See you next week ; }
I enjoyed the "How it's made" episode. Thanks for sharing it with us.
That was such a great episode. Thanks for sharing all that with us.
Gorgeous way to see the Motor City . The Great Lakes are awesome 😁
That was Cool! The Atlas Tour was really neat. The Chris Craft is Beautiful!
Loved the boat. What a beauty. Thanks to Capt'n Gus.
I have used those under the steps and I think they really help.
