Are Car Insurance Photo Estimates Accurate?

- According to TV commercials, insurance companies can estimate the cost of damage to your car by sending a photo. Body shop owners across the country told Inside Edition’s Chief Investigative Correspondent Lisa Guerrero it's not that simple. “They are cheating and undervaluing, understating the actual damages on these cars,” Robert Jesberger said. He owns Mid-Island Collision in Long Island, NY and says he's constantly battling insurance companies over what he calls “lowball photo estimates.” #InsideEdition

11,667 Dollars for a Side
fender
I think the mechanic is a scam lol
It would’ve been almost $10,000 if my dad didn’t work at the dealership when I slid on ice and completely messed up my side fender due to the fact that it pushed back and/or broke a lot of small parts in my car. It was kinda like a domino effect😂💀
The axle's also bent
Not just a side fender keep in mind it was a fender and a door mirror etc. That is what we see keep mind what needs fixed under the hood can be headligh unit tire rod end ball joint even the radiator and a.c. condenser the list goes on and anything cosmetic and or internal needs fixed
The car has a Pearl paint job. The fender and door needed to be painted AND any paint work within 18 inches of a panel needs to be blended into the adjacent panel. So paint on Bumper, Fender, Door, an likely Hood. not te mention inner structure damage. Axle, knuckle etc.......... still $12k? Maybe $6500

Exactly, the insurance company didnt want to pay that and have to total the car.
gknight710 definitely a scion...?
😹😹 thats what I was thinking 11000 for a dent.
I'm not sticking up for insurance companies but I personally know a body shop owner that if I call him for something to be done on my truck his first question is "Is this insurance or out of pocket?" They're a pretty drastic difference usually almost double, so is it the insurance companies being cheap or body shops being greedy or a combo of both? Also I can get a tow for $30 if paying cash but they charge $350 for the same tow if insurance is paying!
I see it as insurance companies trying to keep the body shops honest.
IMO It's a combo of both. No different than how medical insurance and hospitals screw patients.
That's called helping out the little man.
“This car should be totalled”
Car: dent in the door
Look up speed wobbles from a car crash
Death wobble “
they say its totalled because all the repair shops don't want to do that type of work and the insurance companies can't find anyone to do the job
its not because of the outside its the inside some of the important parts for the car could be bent inside that fender that needs to be removed and ordered a new one which is more expensive since like i said its a important part for the car
@@Jezzytt You have absolutely no clue what you're talking about lmao

Do you know it's not just replacing the body panel right? There's a lot more to it like possible frame damage, other parts that may have been damaged and pushed into other things, paint and color match for any panels replaced, and having the cars wheel alignment be in spec, plus the guys aren't working for free. you can easily get it done for cheaper but be prepared for misaligned panels, anything being painted not matching the rest of the car, and the possibility of your car being unsafe and/or unreliable and not passing inspection.

Insurance company: *total is $3,700*
I used to be a Auto Body estimator and we always low balled pictures or over the phone quotes because we always encouraged customers to bring the car to be seen, the photo estimate is just that a quote, not until the damage is stripped and examined the estimate could change dramatically. This is just making the customers lazy.
I shouldn’t have to take my car in for damage that is just dents
@@Viggggggr You don't know that it "is just dents" until you take off the panel and check inside... Every repair should have a supplement.
@@Viggggggr the problem is what if it wasn't just a dent? you will only know the total damage once you opened it up, that's why it's really best if you show it to an expert. It's not just about the money it's about you and the others safety once that vehicle is out in the road again.

I hate Little kids, you do know that he can get it fixed. It’s a fixable thing.
Dorian Bivens that’s what the insurance is supposed to pay for but they’re not giving enough money to fix it, I think idk much about insurance I’m only 15
$11,667 LOL that's how much that car is worth... Its a scion
I work for an insurance company and if the vehicle is nondriveable it won’t qualify for photo estimate. Also once they take it to the shop and tear down the vehicle they shop is to submit supplements. They will fix the car. We know we can’t see behind the damage and the photo estimate is only a preliminary estimate.
I love how inside edition puts these type of videos together. Very useful information even though I haven't had this happen to me.🤞
Insurance companies only want to pay for esthetical part, not all damage. Hit a moose once, insurance company only paid for body work, didn’t even bother to check the mechanics of the car. Transmission was busted and car was unsafe.
@José Balvin what? Why
@José Balvin Because he hit a moose.........? ;-;
Something similar to what happened to the lady almost happened to us. Only difference was the body shop owner reassured us that he would make sure everything would be fully paid off by the insurance. And let me tell you he made it less stressful on us
Same thing happened to me, when body shop said it’s going to cost more, the insurance didn’t have any issues. They paid for the entire fix.
This is so true!! Just went through the same thing and I had to push back instantly. They really think people will be satisfied with a check rather than having their car properly fixed.
Do one on getting your car fixed. Purposely disabling something in the car and then bringing it in and seeing what they diagnose
Glad you have this video! I’m about to send photos into the insurance claim and this is the kind of info I NEEDED
It's just an estimate. Key word estimate. You didn't see any carrier denying the supplements when taken to a shop. If an estimate is written from a picture, most often you can't have a thorough estimate until after tear down. I took my car to a shop for a visual estimate and he also did a very poor job. He didn't get under the car or raise the hood. He wrote the lowest dollar possible. They simply want to force you to get the vehicle repaired in order to get the true repair cost.
Terri Boyd but it did say they give an estimate and sends a check.
KassyyReefer exactly, they're sending the checks after the estimte
That’s the problem with the photo estimates because a mechanic needs to see all angles to know what to fix to make it safe so when these insurance companies ask for photos it’s just the outside and fixing a dent isn’t hard but the stuff underneath is
Let’s photoshop xD
I didnt really need a demonstration how to take a picture..
Don't cash that check if you plan to have it fixed! Give the physical check to the body shop.
I've heard about alot of body shops requesting more money from insurance companies and adding even more damage of their own
Insurance says its $1,700, body shop says $11,000, actual value of damage is 6,000 there just offsetting each others scam.
😂

@@MrMJmusicLover well i bought my land and then built the house. The original poster is probably from the same country as you but im not yet i feel his pain all the same.
@@tesstickle7267 You can buy land, if you have the money for it. Usually people in America buy land they plan on developing or use for commercial purposes. You have to get a permit to alter or grow or change anything to it.
00:36 pixel get diverted
Same thing happened to me there’s no way a picture can tell you what kind of damage was done behind the bumper or fender.
Exactly. It can be just a dent but what happens to the frame or bearings is unknown. Pictures can't see that.
This story lacked the FULL STORY.

This is true, my family was in a car crash and they gave us a really low loan and it was $1,100 . We have a Audi Q7 and when we went to the body shop, they told us it was gonna be $3,000
0:19 this made me laugh so hard 😂
That's why I don't have car insurance (this is a joke)
Lmao (this is a reply)
That is why I love my Geico insurance. When I had an accident they totalled the car right away (although I didn't think it was a major damage) and paid me more than suggested KBB value.
Exactly what happened with me and guess what the insurance company was all state. The body shop person literally told me what can we do if the insurance company is not interested to fix your car.
1) another important thing here is that insurance companies will intentionally miss on your car trim features to value it as low as possible.
30:12 is the most memorable moment
That's why we have mechanics who can help us, see the INTERIOR damage after a crash, and not just the exterior in which the Insurance low balls!
if Gieco's site say estimate is ready but has this footnote "The estimated repair cost includes your deductible".. do I need to subtract my deductible to see what amount the check will be for?
It’s not uncommon for supplements to be added on top of the original estimate as the repairs take place. Insurance companies aren’t dumb....they know taking a simple photo won’t catch any interior damage and might not show the full extent. But it’s a condition of your policy contract that they need to inspect the damages before making a payout which is why they probably encourage you to send in photos.
I’m an adjuster. There’s a process called “supplements”. Take it to a shop, they write their estimate and the shop and insurance company agree on a price.
Your job is to inspect the damage properly hands on, preferably some experience in doing body work. Once vehicle is at the chosen shop, once tore down, if any further damage is observed then the shop is to do a supplement. It makes no sense to do an estimate based off a picture.
:45 why do y’all talk to the viewers as if we’re mentally slow. Y’all do it every video and it’s annoying.

I work in a body shop always take it to the body shop first so then they could deal with the insurance companies. Insurance companies can be a pain in the ass to work with just leave it to the estimators and managers at body shops to deal with them over the money
I was running a high volume collision shop in Tampa FL. I CONSTANTLY had car owners come in and the "check was less than needed". As a typical example I might have a car that was rear ended and it would be written to "repair" the cover for say 4 hours., then it would have paint time. What it would be missing was to remove and install the cover, replace the bumper absorber foam, replace the "welded on" bumper impact bar, time to set the car on the frame machine and clamp it down, measure and pull so that the rear panel of the car was straight, fasteners etc...... It would be a check for maybe $350.00 when the actual repair with parts and the NECESSARY labor for body work, frame time, paint time and parts would be $2500.00. I would always ask the adjusters WHY DO YOU DO THIS?!?!?! when you can clearly see from the damage that there will be more needed than the amount given to repair the cover and paint? The answer was always the same. "If we send a check and they decide to keep the check rather than get it repaired why would we want to give them free money? "On the other hand if and when they actually go in to a repair shop the repair shop will just have to file the "additional damage" and they will get paid." Hell we had to fight for all additional damage. I can see their point as many people down here will literally WANT to get into minor fender benders as they see it as a source of income. And if I am incorrect on them "wanting to get hit" they sure as hell take advantage of it. They would have a check for say $650.00 and it would be less than needed and they would try to shop around so that they could get it done for less and keep the difference. As an example there I had a gentleman with a Lexus about 10 years ago that came in and asked ho much to repair and repaint it. We went over options and decided it was cheaper to repaint the whole car than spot paint and many of the parts listed for remove nae replace could be repaired. I knew he had a check yet was not telling me. I told him $4500.00 and he jumped at it. When we were done I finally had to ask him "how much did you REALLY get paid?" He said it was $7000.00. What a WIN - WIN. LOL
As a collision shop owner I deal with this on a daily basis I always recommend the customer not to cash the check until I have looked over the car 99% of the time we would need to add over 50% more just to pay for the cheap aftermarket parts and if the insurance company gives As a hard time will raise it more
Cashing the check doesn't make a difference. If there is a supplement owed by the insurance another check gets sent out. Most policy's only owe for A/M parts, its not the shops decision what gets put back on the car. If the insured wants oem then they can pay the difference or get some type of endorsement stating only OEM parts can be used to repair their vehicle
A gate fell in my yard and hit my sister's car we took it to the most expensive body shop in town then fixed it for a thousand less than that she got 3600 that's what y'all people need to do

I had a different experience, body shops asking to keep the claim open. Like I went to the body shop and the owner trying to make the damage seem more than it was. I get my insurance company will pay but when the labor cost is going to get jacked for almost the value of the car that to me is concerning. And although labor can be difficult. I do have an issue when they quote labor @ $57 an hour. Is like when one take a car to Midas for repairs and the quote $2000 for repairs. And if you shop around you can find parts for cheaper and even the labor.

They forgot about the hidden damage underneath the car and beneath the damaged body panels or doors. Pictures don't always tell the whole story.
I don’t get this I’m so confused what’s the original price and insurance price suppost to mean ?
That side fender repair cost would be less than $100 here where I live.
What about over estimated ????
How do I fight that???
He's right. I went there and he had to fight my insurance for me. He's really a good guy.
All the bodyshops I've ever been to were able to contact the insurance company(s) to amend the original estimate.
It’s not a scam or a low ball. I have friends in the insurance industry that admit to cutting a check for what can only be seen but that they will send the adjusted amount for any underlying damage such as frame work.
No body can give an accurate estimate off a photo. There is a good possibility of underlying additional damage. Even with a professional body shop estimate additional damage can be found once into the repairs. Every time that has happened the body shop has gladly brought me in and shows me the unforeseen damage. My insurance has always covered additional damage even if the other driver that hit my vehicle insurance did not. Even as simple as a missed wheel cap cover. The crazy thing of it is that every so called accident my vehicles were involved in, they were parked or stopped at an intersection. All were caused by cell phone inattentive drivers. Yes that is what the officer said the cause was in every case.
i dont understand how the insurance work in the US but here where i live you only pay like 400$ and the insurance covers the rest of the damage.. then i decide wich bodyshop i get to fix the car.. so then he makes a qoutation for me the lowest bid wins.. so the insurance doesn't declare my car totalled
