- It was bedlam on the beach with binge drinking, raunchy behavior and arrests as Inside Edition’s cameras captured this year's spring break antics. Spring break is underway at South Padre Island, Texas, and Inside Edition’s Chief Investigative Correspondent Lisa Guerrero was in the thick of it. She asked a group of girls, “Are you worried at all about your safety?” “I am worried about my safety,” one replied. “We don't take drinks from other guys,” another said. #InsideEdition
So, it really isn't about unsafe balconies. Its about young people having fun. Drinking and being irresponsible.
They made it sound like maybe the balcony or railing collapsed.

It didn't appeal to me 40 years ago when I was in college and still doesn't appeal to me now. Back then I thought I was being prudish now I see I was being smart. My Spring breaks consisted of road trips and just hanging out with friends . I'm all for having fun but getting sloppy drunk and acting stupid just wasn't my thing.

A university I worked at had a Spring term course that went to Australia. One of the female students was getting drunk all the time so she was locked in her hotel room. She tried to jump from one balcony to another to go out and party. She didn't make it. Young people sometimes make bad choices. She didn't survive.

Isn’t that false imprisonment (at least in the U.S. if not Australia where you said she was)? As well as a violation of her human rights locking her in there? Generally she’d be able to make her choice even if it’s a wrong one and have to deal with the consequences of getting arrested and put in a drunk tank etc etc unless it were her parents at home or something
@@wacodraco1558 I wasn't on the trip so I don't know the exact issues; all of this is second hand In other trips (different university) where we had alcohol, problems one of the faculty has had to stay with a student while the other students carried our activities. Generally when we do have alcohol issues students get sent home so I am not aware of exactly what the circumstances were.

When I went to mizzou for family weekend there were people on a table on a balcony. Me and my family were so worried for them that they could fall off and die bc of certain situations happening to students before. The students on the balcony were drinking and dancing and didn’t care what is going to happen to them :(. We left right after so we didn’t know if they were okay but we heard no reports of it.
I went to Las Vegas a lot for business expos and would stay at the Sahara when I couldn't get a suite at the Hilton. The North Tower was built back in the 50's way before OSHA came along in the early 70's. The balcony railings were a short 3 feet tall and I refused to go out on the balcony - especially when the balcony surface had a 5% tilt toward the edge for rain runoff!
I'm actually proud that I never experienced these kind of things.

I have been on balconies all my life….. never “fell off”. My take on this segment is that the balconies aren’t dangerous…. What’s dangerous is the irresponsible actions and behavior from grown adults… that act like children…..

Same here. I once planned a trip to Atlanta with the family lo and behold, an entire high school basketball team was there with us on our floor with no coach invoking good behavior nor a curfew. We had an 11 hour drive the next day, and believe me, that's rough when you got maybe three hours of sleep.

my spring break was road trips seeing different states with my closest buddies, drinking in motels and adventuring. i love a good party, but wouldn’t wanna do this much. partying in a controlled setting is way more fun imo

I lived in Panama City Beach for 20 years. About two people a year died from falling off balconies.
At a University grad party one of my friends died falling off of a balcony. Two men fell off, one landed on top of his buddy and the impact killed the friend.

Or when balconies just... collapse under all that weight. That happened at a house party I was at. We lived in these mid century places with wrap around balconies. Yeah, nobody died but a girl's foot went thru and the whole side started to fall. I'll never forget that! Yikes! Maybe they should post a limit how many people can be on the balcony? Like an elevator.

I taught my kids to volunteer at local pantry instead. I taught them to avoid Spring breakers, fraternities and other stupid activities. I am happy that my kids listen to me.

I’m *AFRAID* of heights and really TALL balconies, even if it’s just 3 feet high balcony I will *NEVER* go on one
I think places such as hotels and beaches need to have strict rules for college students for their safety as well as the courtesy of other people, such as:
Capacity limits to prevent overcrowding
No underage drinking, drugs, or smoking/vaping
No loud music
No perching or jumping off railings
Quiet time after a specific time (e.g. 11:00)
No swearing
And security guards/police to help monitor crowds.
I believe college students should have fun and enjoy themselves, but they need to do so in a safe and responsible manner and also be courteous to other guests at places like these.
No heavy drinking AT ANY age!!

eleven years ago and old friend of mine in Chino High School 77th Calvary Marching Band had the idea of trying to cross from one balcony to another. We convinced him not to do that for obvious reasons. This was in April 2011 in Honolulu, Hawaii. If he did try to cross over he probably would have fallen to his death.
