While tolls help pay for bridges and roads and red lights and speeding cameras keep our streets safer, an Inside Edition investigation has found some law enforcement officers are finding a way to avoid them. A plastic license plate cover allows for a plate to be read head on, but when viewed from an angle, the characters disappear. Inside Edition has found more than 100 vehicles parked in the streets of New York City illegally obscuring their plates. #InsideEdition

A cop was tailgating me so I sped up and when he came to me, I told him "you were tailgating me" I also did a lane change because I saw him coming really fast.
Most of those cops arent actually enforcing that law. Thats how they justify it.

There’s a code called “Code 2 - Urgent. No lights or sirens”. They do that because the call is urgent but not urgent enough to use lights and sirens all the way.

I used to have those on my car when I was young. I didn’t know that they were illegal, I just thought that they were cool and protecting the license plate from getting dirty. Then I got pulled over and got a ticket. The cops just told me that they were illegal without really explaining why. Then after getting my ticket, I went online to understand why they were illegal.
The fact that cops know that it is illegal but still have them on, that’s a shame. Mainly when they give tickets to others for doing the same thing.

On official vehicles, maybe. Not on their private cars - although some of them seem to think they're exempt. Check out the plates outside of any police station (the cars parked on the sidewalks, on hydrants, etc.)

No tolls in my area. but we dont have that weird "fizzy" bit cover that distorts the plate's numberings. Used for keeping off damage, paint chipping, debris hitting the plate, allowing it to be visible to law enforcement when needing to read the painted letters.

Correct. The state had a bad batch of license plates that peeled. If I recall correctly, plates starting with E were more affected.
They should do a car by car inspection and remove each license plate cover they find or at least ticket them. In Miami, a few years back, police did a nighttime job of running plates and removing them from the cars that were not insured.

I can see why a police officer would want to hide their plates. Not to avoid toll (they make bank), but to avoid people who have a grudge against a particular officer. Like to follow them around for revenge or do vandalize their cars.
