Also, just get a paper license plate with letters close to yours. Put it on the cover. Then, when the police stop you, you just put it up and it looks like he made a mistake.

Trust me, dude with a porschey ain't trying to ditch paying cheap tolls, he's obviously trying to ditch speed cameras snapping his plates and getting tickets or losing driving licence points due to speeding.
As a Porsche driver, this is absolutely correct, I don't have a problem paying tolls, but with that much horsepower under my right foot you better believe I am going to use it. That is literally the whole point of buying such a car.

The 407 has some of the highest tolls in the world but I know someone who has a 1993 Nissan Pathfinder and has been using the highway for years without paying as the spare tire on these pathfinders hangs on the back of the vehicle and blocks the view of the plate.

Illegally. Since it was written in a contract and promised to the public that 407 toll rates won't increase. But then after 3 sales to offshore companies the original contract got "forfotten".

I got a free ride on it when I visited a few years ago. No obstructed plate or anything just never got any kind of bill.

With the number of cars in Ontario with plates that have the colour peeled off or are covered with a dark tinted covers or bike racks obstructing them, I highly doubt the cops really care.

"Every driver must have licence plates on their vehicle that are not obstructed and be visible at all times". Funny thing is you don't see the police pull over vehicles that have a rear mount bike rack that obstructs the plate and you also never see them pull anyone over that has a completely unreadable plate because the paint has come off the letters or digits.

My buddy hangs one of his old socks out of his trunk. Low tech, but he says it works. His wife is just happy those old socks are not in the bedroom while she is glued to Facebook. So far he hasn't being stopped, his excuse to authorities will be he was at the beach a few days ago and was drying them, but then forgot to remove them from the trunk. I think he is toast with this rubbish of a story. That said, the wife is happy, and has no plans to bail him out.
Local police told me they were going to crack down on that. That was 15 years ago.

Yeah they do that here in the states too. Even more often I see the silver paint on them trying to make it look like they're worn out when they're not. Although if they actually were worn out the driver is also equally responsible to replace them immediately if that is the case.

As a Japanese with some infosec background, I was surprised at the fact that identification for toll fees in Canada is based on license plates…
They are easy to hide or tamper, so it’s a design-level security flaw.
In Japan, you need a designated car/payer identification device (called ETC) to enter toll roads without entry tickets, so few criminals try to enter toll roads without paying fees.
In California, we have a device called Fastrack which can be set to the number of passengers in the car since the tolls vary with the passenger count. If they don't get a signal from the Fastrack there are license plate readers. I guess if you don't have a license plate the Highway Patrol goes after you.
Most of the midwestern states have a device mounted inside the windshield that emits a signal for the tolls. Most of the toll roads in Illinois have open tolling which means that the device is read as you drive through a point without stopping and if it detects a car going through without a signal it photographs the plate and puts it in the system. If someone doesn't have a device, they can go online to pay within a grace period.
It is the same on some toll bridges in Montreal. It is just way cheaper to take the licence plate info for distributing the bill.
Well of course these roads have the same thing. Its not only in Japan. But what happens if a vehicle enters the highway without out an ETC?
We literally do have a transponder that you pay a small monthly fee and you get toll camera charges for free, but you pay .49 cents a km
If you do not have a transponder you pay to enter the highway and exit the highway ( 3.95 each time ) and .49 cents a km , this particular driver was able to buy his Porsche because he was skipping out on all the fees by covering his license plate, and not having a transponder

I had one of those sets of plates that simply lose all paint after a "few" years (7 years in my case). I knew they were almost bare, and had made an appointment at services Ontario to replace them. Of course I was informed by an officer that driving around with it was not allowed, but he let me go with a warning and a promise to replace them. I thought it would be expensive.... 0 dollars if you bring the old plates. Well, I be darned!!

I actually thought about something like this, my idea was to have the plate flip inside out with the push of a button like the cars in a James bond movie.
They had a triangular shaped block with 3 different license plates. He would press a button inside the car and rotate it 120 degrees to display one of the 3 choices.
Already exist and its more bulky and prone to broke, this one is middle tech, you can purchase one who look like the one they show but much faster.

As mentioned elsewhere it was failing to have a plate on front and obscured plate on back. Two separate issues so two separate charges. Would have been cheaper to no plates at all maybe ? Just one charge then ? I dunno.

I think the cop gave the guy 2 tickets in case he pleads not guilty to the charges. They will nail him on one or the other.

Buddy of mine was working down town Toronto for few weeks and would park on the side of the road and get a ticket because the ticket was alot cheaper then paying for parking all day

I've always thought of using these, much before I even started driving cars. But this is the exact reason why I didn't do it. It's illegal. So I just use bicycle now. Don't want to drive a bike or car with plates. Makes the vehicle look ugly.
In Germany, you would already face serious prosecution for simply having this thing installed. Because you are under general suspicion to be intending to break traffic laws with such a thing. In addition to any modification to the outside of the vehicle being illegal.

Also, wrong. There are speed cameras on the Autobahn. Because you can't go unlimited on all of it, only on sections, where it's somewhat safe to do so.

I got a 695$ ticket (Qc, Montreal)for a clear plastic cover from Canadian tire , went to court and lost ! And he got 110$??? What a joke!

Ontario has the worst manufactured plates. I’ve replaced 2 sets of plates already due to pealing lamination. (Only a 5 year warranty to get replaced for free)

In San Francisco, what is now common are vehicles driving at night without license plate light, particularly ride services and restaurant delivery drivers.

When I lived in FL many drivers have no license plate at all to avoid tolls.
Here in South Australia we do not have Tolls for roads because it is the governments responsibility to supply roads not private companies to profit from. We pay registration and insurance to the government that is enough!

Surely you jest. The cops are not that friendly here in Ontario dude. I found the cops in the states to be much friendlier and helpful. The rule of thumb is to always be polite to them and they will be polite-ish in return.
Obstruct it for tolls but remember to switch it back after you break the law.

I bought a perfectly clear one with a fun border, thinking it would protect my plate - especially when there were license plate stickers; I was told by my driving trainer that the stickers are stolen sometimes and I didn't want to be ticketed for not having an up to date sticker.
The cover, which I thought would protect my plate, actually CAUSED the paint to peel prematurely by trapping just a bit of moisture, and I had to go get new plates. Huge waste of money.

Even a clear plate they can ticket you. Cause by law you’re not allow to any cover on the plate. I got pulled over saying my tint was too dark they measured it and it was ok. Then issue me a ticket of a clear cover instead 😂 so even the dealer plate covers are technically illegal too
Plate switching has been around for decades. I remember watching the old Green Hornet TV series where the plate would switch to another one.Some states are really strict, I got a fine for having a perfectly clear cover over my plate about 35 yrs ago in MD.
Yeah, I use PAPER PLATES because I do a lot of things that I shouldn't. Because I can just PRINT A NEW ONE -- if I see any type of APB for my license plate. Crime is so easy now.

WHY WOULD YOU TELL THEM ABOUT THE FLIPPER?!
The alternative would be a ticket for a vehicle with no plate at all (not just obscured)... and possibly getting the vehicle impounded. Showing the officer the plate cover was probably the driver's way to say "see - I really do have a plate", and to explain how he "accidentally" had it covered. And it worked - the tickets he got cost less than an oil change for that car, so the driver got away with it and will not remove the cover.

When our plates are snow covered while driving during bad weather conditions is the only time you can slide on this. Digital technology will change the plates system where our vehicles information will be active and accessible in a radio frequency.

A friend of mine says that parking fines are just a charge for excellent parking. This seems like the same thing. A small charge to get a free toll pass.
In Alberta, the police ignore these violations, as well as intentionally distorted license plates, tinted windows and distracted driving. I lived in London, UK and the police have no mercy when it comes to these types of motor vehicles violations. The police always want more funding, but as I see it, they could easily add millions to their funding shortfall if they actually enforced and ticketed individuals who are the problem, especially distracted drivers with a $450.00 fine and 3 demerits, which their insurance rates would increase and not mine.
The easiest way to get out of most traffic tickets. Dispute it, and take it to court. 9 times out of 10 the issuing officer won't show up, and the judge will through it out. Meaning the ticket was basically never written. No fine, no demerrit points, no increase in insurance.

You’re wrong! I live in Alberta and I’ve been busted for having a plate cover that distorts the image for photo radar. It was a $150 fine and they took my cover. You used to be able to buy them for $60 at JB Automotives in Edmonton. Lol. I’ve also been stopped twice for tinted side windows in the front seats. Was fined once and the other time I was given the option to peel off the tint or take a fine.
Maybe for some, we moved to Alberta and have been pulled over for tinted windows and having a car that is too loud several times in the last year. I have seen many others with tinted windows and much louder cars. So I’m not sure what it is.
@@andyfunke9484 You still have to go to court. Do that once a month, and you'll find it might be cheaper to just stop the bad behavior even if it costs you no direct money to the state.
