    One reason for when you would want to hide a license plate is when you park it at an airport when going on vacation - so to not tell thiefs that your home is now empty and ready for looting.

    • @ericmills9839
      @ericmills9839 8 месяцев назад +11

      Good idea, but I wonder if that is legal. Might depend on whether the lot is technically private or not. Most airports are owned by the city/state/county. In NYC area they are all owned by the cities and operated by the Port Authority. I wouldn't be shocked if the PA cops had some rule about that. Risk probably low I suppose.

    • @redtra236
      @redtra236 4 месяца назад +1

      @@ericmills9839 I think you'd probably get away with it if you only use it when parked and I doubt it's even illegal in most states. It's definitely legal on private property. If a cop noticed it and questioned you you could say it was to lower the risk of your plates getting stolen(pretty common). But it'd be easy to forget to uncover it before you drive and if you got caught you'd probably get a ticket. Maybe if you told the cop you forgot to uncover it he might give you a warning but probably not.

    • @MmmmDatAss
      @MmmmDatAss 3 месяца назад

      I would presume that if it was used on private property that it wouldn't be illegal, but the fact it's installed would suggest that you do use it on public roads which would be very illegal.

    • @somerandoonyt9553
      @somerandoonyt9553 12 дней назад +1

      I was thinking that it would be useful if you have a car that you frequently put on display at legitimate car shows. People constantly taking pictures of your car, and you don't want your plate number being posted online. Even the flipping plate. You can have a decorative plate for display on one side.
      I'm not sure of the legality of this scenario, but I can see it being useful in a non nefarious way.

      What's your "legal" lawyerly opinion on those electric car horns that make your car "honk" like a Big Rig, or a Train? 🤨

    • @Pete_Finch
      @Pete_Finch 2 года назад +24

      @@steadholderharrington9035 That's actually a really interesting legal question and one that I've thought about since watching some (sometimes hilarious) videos of people going around with train horns on their cars/trucks. It depends on what state you're in - I'm licensed here in New York, and our definition contained within the statues is still pretty nebulous. Basically, NY laws call for a horn that is sufficiently loud as to be able to warn other drivers around a vehicle, but not so loud as to be unnecessarily disruptive. Of course, no decibel levels are set forth in the statutes and the basic limit seems to be use-related. That is, if you're USING your train horn to make "unnecessary or unreasonably loud/ harsh sounds", then that could be a problem. Basically, these laws are an imprecise shitshow which many drivers could potentially use to their advantages. Anyway, cheers fellow Donut fans!

    • @steadholderharrington9035
      @steadholderharrington9035 2 года назад +5

      @@Pete_Finch Nebulous, is it? Try that from the perspective of an actual "Big Rig" driver who's used to being able to use their double/triple horns to gain the attentions of inattentive driver's in traffic (like waiting at traffic lights that are green, but the yahoo in front of you hasn't notice because they're too busy updating their twitter account, or something else equally lame). And then imagine going home in your "civilian vehicle" and finding yourself in the same situation but without the more effective trucker horns at your disposal. The distracted drivers barely notice regular car horns these days. 😅😅

    • @Pete_Finch
      @Pete_Finch 2 года назад +4

      @@steadholderharrington9035 I've got a friend who's a long haul trucker and man do I ever feel for you guys. Generally, you're the best trained and most attentive drivers on the road and I constantly see every idiot in a tiny hatchback dipping and dodging in front of you, not caring that there are thousands of pounds of cargo behind them as long as they get to their destination more quickly. Proper truck horns and train horns are sweet, I'm just telling you what the law says (and it would probably be on your side in most "nuisance" or noise ordinance cases here in NY at least)

      Awesome, years ago (also in Florida) I had a small "FUCK WORK" sticker and used to frequent a neighborhood full of cops to visit a friend , one day upon leaving we were followed and stopped and I was handcuffed and placed in the back of a crown victoria and almost arrested for "distribution of obscene material", they had to look in their books to find the charge. They let me go after searching my vehicle and gave me a court date. After a quick online search I realized I was fine and had an easy day in court. Still sucked tho, fuck those guys.
      I also told the cop I was going to throw up in the back of his car from claustrophobia if they didn't open the door. They eventually relented and the cops referred to me as "special" for being allowed to hang my feet out the car, when additional units would show up (bc of course). It was insane and a complete violation of my rights and privacy. Sorry you had to go through that, but looks like you are dealing with it alright.

      Your first point, I think, is moot. When you leave said meet and greet you’ll have to show your plate. Meaning everyone can see it and take a snapshot of it if they so desired. Additionally you drive around all the time with your plate showing… If I remember correctly, license plate data is more or less public data. This wouldn’t really be a good argument in court I don’t think.
      The 2nd one kind of makes sense.. the shoot would have to be on private property, though, at which point it might be cheaper to just unscrew your plate.
      The 3rd point is an interesting one… how prolific is license plate theft? If someone wanted to steal your plate, that thing isn’t preventing that from happening.

      This is much easier to regulate in the US because of the common language, but here in the EU people often got away with shockingly obscene license plates simply by registering them in another country (which is perfectly legal and not that hard to do if the car itself meets local safety regulations). While this is usually just harmless cheeky humor, there was a famous case of political protest that made headlines across the union and prompted extensive debates over free speech and personal rights issues, fortunately union regulators (equivalent to the US federal authorities) leaned in favor of free speech, basically telling politicians to grow up and stop whining about such unusual but harmless forms of public protest.

People including my relatives would receive tickets in the mail for literally no reason. We ended up just avoiding that area all together in car.

      In FL what happened was they determined that you cannot ticket the owner of a vehicle for the actions of another driver. Send a guy a ticket because his son was driving the car and rolled through the red. Can't do that. You have to ticket the individual but since they can't prove who the driver was, thrown out in court. Then the fines were sent out from a 3rd party who didn't individually validate the offence, they just issued the citation. Plus the tickets were fine only meaning no points. So if you had the cash you could just run reds all day and pay the $100 fine with no worry. After cities lost money and paid millions for the cameras and paying court costs to fight them and losing every time, most cities removed them.

      Otherwise, if the device puts out a 40 mph speed stationary, then that means if you place it facing the rear, it'll decrease your detected speed by that amount when you pass by a radar gun. I think that's better than outright spitting out garbage data, concealing the car's true speed but also making it obvious that the driver is using a jammer.

    In Germany, vehicle registration plates are a document. They are provided with an official seal. They are also standardised and must always be clearly legible. This means that you can get into trouble if mud makes the number plate illegible. Wear and tear, e.g. faded black lettering due to frequent washing, can also lead to the need to have new licence plates fitted. So any kind of paint or foil has no place here.

    • @s1mph0ny
      @s1mph0ny 2 года назад +11

      The officer wasn't aware of any law being broken when he initiated the stop, he had to theory craft something that might match with the help of dispatch before charging the man with obscenity. If you read FL obscenity law, it's not nearly that broad, doesn't even mention language, and as such the accused wasn't guilty of that either. The big problem with QI is that it sets an imaginary standard where police departments can only be held responsible for breaking a law if they previously were punished for breaking that same law. Unfortunately, even in cases like this where the prosecutor failed to charge and the courts recognized that the accusation was incorrect, as the officer wasn't punished there won't be a precedent to prevent future disdain for this law.
