Replacing it with OEM catalytic means the thieves will be back for it again. Replacing it with an aftermarket, the thieves won't even touch it. It may not last as long as the OEM but have less precious material in it. It's not worth their time.
Commifornia requires a CA certified/legal "product number" for the same aftermarket replacement and cost 3-4 times more than what it is sold for in other states. So car owners will opt for the OEM instead, which would cost only a few hundreds more. Enticing thieves to hit it up again and again like what happened to this man in the video. Changing nothing.
The best part is the normal replacement cats have little value and the thieves will not take them.
@@thevictim2072 Yeah because catalytic converters are ONLY being stolen in California, because thieves that get the job done in under a minute make sure to check that it's the OG cats 👏
California is over populated, so they have more pollution.
The auto industry could easily put something into place to protect converters at a very minimal cost. If I lived in an area where I thought mine could get stolen I'd have somebody weld some rebar or something on the areas a thief would have to cut through to make it impossible to steal and that wouldn't cost very much.
Yes, you would think the manufactures would know that by now.

Good thing they made that law to stop the thieves this year. Good job Newsome!
It's Oakland so it is expected.
Newsom, if u can't fix this problem, at least give us a cheaper solution to keep our cars running. Let us install straight pipe and waive us from passing smog test to register our cars. YOUR FAILURE TO STOP THIS IS ALREADY DISAPPOINTING, AT LEAST EASE OUR PAIN WHEN WE GET HIT!

@@majesticmajestic7058 That is true. I need to get my gun.... but wait if I shoot them, they will shoot back, or if I kill them, I will go to jail. This country is going downhill fast.
What makes it so bad for the car owners is, they live in California where they have more stringent emissions laws. That's why people have to wait 7 or 8 months for a replacement because it is a much rarer part. California and many states in the northeast have the same emissions laws.
"¡It's all part of a Bureaucracy!"

It's illegal to run a car without a catalytic converter.
It's also illegal for CA to violate the 2nd amendment, but they do it anyway without consequence.
@@heh2k The Second Amendment has nothing to do with catalytic converters. Catalytic converters are exhaust emission control devices that convert toxic gases and pollutants in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine into less-toxic pollutants by catalyzing a redox reaction. It is a requirement to use these devices. Otherwise, the air will be severely polluted.

That is what I was going to suggest is getting a cat clamp or shield for the Prius. It appears though when a thief wants something, they will get it in any shape or form. Actually my suggest in general would be where are these thieves taking the catalytic converter to? I think it's a scrap medal place if I am not mistaken. If they are or where ever they are taking them too, that place needs a way to see if the item is stolen. There should be a serial number on each one (maybe hidden inside). If it's stolen that number should be entered into a data base for the police. Then places that accept catalytic converters should be able to access that data base. If it's stolen you reject it. Don't take it. That would cut back stealing so much. Of course too, it would be again up the the place that takes them in to do the right thing.
Just straight pipe it. Why keep replacing it?

Look, it’s those who BUY these things that are making the market for thieves.
Those dealing in used converters need to report the VIN of the car it supposedly came from and the driver’s license of whoever sold it to them. Then the cops can track down the thief or arrest the guy acting as a fence.
And if the same VIN is being used over and over, that should be flagged by the reporting app too.

Converters don't have the VIN stamped on them. Most of these theft rings simply pack them up in container ships and send them overseas. These are not being sold directly to scrap yards or muffler shops.
