      Our politicians made this medical theft perfectly legal. We didn't have insurance and my wife had a pacemaker put in. The bill $165,000. We were going to file for bankruptcy so we go to an attorney that specializes in medical bankruptcies. We didn't go to court but our attorney negotiated with the hospital and got the bill down to $12,500. So we made monthly payments on that. Here is the kicker. Our attorney demanded an itemized statement and she told us the hospital ONLY had $9,000.00 TOTAL into the surgery but yet originally charged us $165,000. So they over-charged us over $150,000. Yes, hospital are scumbags but they got us by the balls because if you don't use them you might die.

    • @Flight042
      @Flight042 Год назад +1

      Well the ER is routinely busy with a limited number of beds no matter which country you're looking at. In the US you are looking at 2-4 hour wait times after you get a bed due to a mix of the various test and cultures that need to be run in addition to the high number of patient with even longer waits depending on the hospital's designation. In a perfect world, better public health programs that encourage people to have healthy habits, more routine primary care, and better diagnosis at urgent care would lower the traffic and free up some beds. So to summarize, yes please avoid the ER if you have a minor issue(Go to an urgent care instead it'll save you time and money), if serious however please go to an ER.
      Costwise you have to remember that the ER has to be staffed 24/7 by physicians, nurses, techs, security, and other staff in a high staff-to-patient ratio due to the variety of cases that pop up there. This often leads to situations in which the emergency room isn't actually earning a hospital much money due to high fixed costs relative to other units. Furthermore, the battle between pharmaceuticals, insurance providers, hospitals, and patients are unending. Pharmaceuticals are encouraged to have high prices with high margins, insurance providers are encourged to deny coverage or try to promote a lower quality of care to save money, with hospitals and patients stuck in the middle fighting it out sometimes. Additionally, not all insurance coverages are the same with certain groups being more consistent thus with more restrictive insurance coverage you may be more likely to be transferred to other hospitals in the region and passed down the colloquial chain.
      Tldr: Yes, healthcare is terribly broken.

    I was a caretaker for a 75 year old woman many years ago in coastal Orange County, California. I was concerned that she had lost her appetite but appeared to be gaining weight. I took her to her doctor and he had her admitted to the hospital nearby. They determined that she had ovarian cancer and performed an operation. She spent 2 weeks in the hospital and was allowed to come home. When her husband got the bill, I thought it was overly high, so I called the hospital’s billing department. They informed me that he had plenty of insurance but I asked for an itemized bill. I was shocked at what I saw. Not only was she charged for the operation but she was charged $12.95 for each Tylenol tablet, new bed cushions each day, new catheters for each day(both of which aren’t normal to do), fetal monitoring, observation of labor, a DNC (to clear the placenta)! I was dumbfounded, so I called the hospital to explain to me why a 75 year old woman with ovarian cancer would be charged for these things. I was told that they had to pad the bills of insured people to cover the costs of “indigent” people because the insurance companies would pay! I told them that that’s insurance fraud, a crime and that I was going to report it to the insurance company and probably they state insurance inspectors! Within a few months, that hospital was bought out by another hospital and no longer exists. Who knows how many people were fraudulently taken advantage of just by that hospital alone!

      I've heard a lot of people who needed surgeries done in their countries of universal healthcare, but were put on a waiting list that was months long. So they opted to fly to the U.S. to get the surgeries done much sooner. Our pricing is horrible because of lousy regulation laws, but our healthcare in general is pretty top notch. We have the best of the best when it comes to specialists, probably because doctors get paid much more in America.

      @@Kingdom_Of_Dreams Doctors do get paid more in the US, but their not nor do they have a reputation for “the best”. Other countries regulate what can be made (as it should be). Doctors in the US are not making hundreds of thousands, they’re making millions. What happened to “do no harm”? How do I know this? My doctor has a $7 million dollar cabin in aspen. So imagine what his actual residence is worth? American doctors will choose money over your health. They’re already getting paid what they should from insurance and then ask you for more. And Americans are endocrine to believe this is normal and somehow a good thing because good doctors are expensive. They’re doctors not designer handbags.
      Also note, UK, Japan, South Korea, Germany, France and Spain are superior to the US. The only people who believe the US is better are those from the US. Keep in mind, many drugs, medical devices and procedures are invented outside the US. So the most advanced medical technology isn’t in the US.
      I am now being seen at cedars Sinai Hospital (one of the best in the US), and they were amazed at the care I received in the UK. Luckily, I’m only seen for my annual visits. I was getting treated with medical and holistic medicine that even the best US insurances do not pay. That means you’d have to come in with cash.
      Yes, waits do exist, but emergencies as well as many treatments are taken care of just like the US (and often times faster). Unless you personally experienced universal healthcare, only believe a fraction of what others tell you. I’ve made appointments in the US that took weeks (and one was over two months). That’s with private insurance. So when you hear of a European getting a surgery months later, that’s not different than the US. The issue is, Europeans are treated very good and used to that treatment, so god forbid someone has to wait a month or two, it’s on BBC One at 10.
      One last thing, being seen quickly in the US doesn’t mean you’ll be treated or get the best care possible. If the insurance feels your treatment will cost too much, you’ll be denied. In the UK, you’ll still get treated (unless it’s cosmetic). So if you ask me, I’d wait the few months for treatment versus being forced to sell my first born.

      @@Kingdom_Of_Dreams The ONLY time I ever heard of a Canadian citizen coming to the US was because the nearby hospital was not performing the type of surgery (the one best for this particular patient) that a hospital just over the border was performing. The Canadian system PAID for transpiration, PAID all expenses, PAID for the surgery. No co-pay, no $100,000 medical bill, no issues.
      Very VERY few ever come here unless it is a situation like the above. Far more US citizens find a way to get to other countries so they can afford to be treated.
      And waiting lists in other countries are typically on par with US waiting lists.

    I wonder if this case could fall under patient abuse? These patients were abused financially; and it appears that the hospital can not justify the charges.
    Therefore, I believe that the state should go after the hospital and take them to court. Airing THIS dirty laundry in court and the media might shine a light
    on OTHER issues occurring at this hospital. This hospital needs to be investigated and a full audit of all its books should be performed as well, because
    this obviously wasn't the first time that this hospital has outrageously over-charged its patients!

    The cost of medical care is out of control. I was in an auto accident several years ago and I was hurt critically. I was in the ICU for a month and in the hospital then rehab for another almost 4 months. My hospital bill came to $1,250,000+. Yes, over one million dollars. Thank goodness I had good health insurance. I can’t imagine what people without insurance would do. One accident could ruin your life forever.

      Often times if you offer to pay out of pocket, or just say you can't afford it, they will HEAVILY discount the cost if you don't have insurance. They just hope that the people without insurance will just mindlessly pay the cost they give to insurance carriers instead of pester them about being unable to pay.

    • @nancyjackson8886
      @nancyjackson8886 Год назад +3

      @@harpiessnow I actually worked with Cardiac Surgeons for many years and we had many patients without health insurance that needed surgery - many of those patients can from Mexico. In people with insurance their bills came to over $100,000 for an uncomplicated surgery. But for people that were cash pay they would be charged a flat fee of 20-30k. It would definitely not be as costly as what insurance pays. So if you don’t have health insurance, you should definitely negotiate the price. If you have insurance, the insurance company will pay through the nose. And depending on the type of health insurance you have, you also may be paying a lot as well.
